  • Graeme Rugby Festival to kickstart the Eastern Cape schoolboy season once again

Graeme Rugby Festival to kickstart the Eastern Cape schoolboy season once again

    Somerset Field, Graeme College

It is well-known that Graeme College doesn’t shy away from a challenge during its annual Graeme College Rugby Festival in Makhanda.

This year the hosts will face Selborne College from East London in the main match of the festival. The last time these two sides met each other as part of the rugby day/festival was back in 2017.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Selborne won this clash by 20-15. Last year the annual rugby day which kick-starts the Eastern Cape’s schoolboy rugby season was converted into a festival as part of the Graemians’ 150th celebrations.

It also provides a good opportunity for players from the region to impress the Craven Week selectors from Border and Eastern Province early in the season as well as the SA Schools’ coach James Winstanley.

Winstanley coaches Kingswood College of Makhanda. They will face Marlow Landbou from Cradock on the second day of the festival. Despatch’s coach, Elric van Vuuren, who also coached Eastern Province to an unbeaten Craven Week last year in George will without a doubt be in attendance as well.

Last year the festival allowed him to see Batho Hlekani (Graeme College) and De Wet Fourie (HTS Daniël Pienaar) in action. Both flankers played a pivotal role in Eastern Province’s success in George. Hlekani was named the Craven Week Player of the Tournament for his efforts, while Fourie also made the SA Schools A-side.

Grey High School will also travel to Makhanda to face Hudson Park of East London in the main match of the second day. Another exciting match-up on the second day would be between Dale College and Nico Malan of Humansdorp. Both schools’ first teams are known for the fact that they love to run the ball.

Pearson will open their season with a tough encounter against Queen’s College.

  • Booysen produces world-leading performance during Noordheuwel Top 15

The outstanding performer during Wednesday’s annual Noordheuwel Top 15 athletics meeting was, without a doubt, Heidi Booysen of the Crawford Christian Academy.

Booysen produced two of the four performances during the meeting in Krugersdorp that accumulated the maximum possible 1 000 points on the Athletics Performance Evaluation (APE) Table.

Booysen had the crowd on the edge of their seats during the girls’ u16 shot put as she easily bettered the meeting record. Her longest put measured 17.50 metres, which improved on the previous mark, set by Alicia Khunou (Menlopark) in 2022, by a massive 99 centimetres.

Booysen’s attempt is also the best by a youth (u18) athlete worldwide so far in 2024. The second-best distance, achieved by Nafy Thiam (Belgium), is some way off Booysen’s monster distance, at 17.10m.

The world record (u18) for the event belongs to Corrie de Bruin of the Netherlands, who set an astounding mark of 20.52 m way back in 1993. Booysen will still be able to compete in the u18 age group next year.

She achieved 1 000 points in another discipline, the discus, with a 46.08 metre effort. That places Booysen fourth in the world this year. It was, however, not enough to break Alicia Khunou’s meeting record of 46.64m, which survives another year.

Menlopark’s Merle Janse van Rensburg also enjoyed a strong discus competition, capturing second place with a best of 43.15m.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Alicia Khunou also produced a 1 000-point performance for her winning throw of 50.44 metres in the u19 girls’ discus. Liandri de Wet, from Hoërskool Rustenburg, took second with an excellent throw of 47.08 meters, which still left her more than three metres adrift of Khunou.

Khunou added another gold in the shot put, within a winning distance of 14.80m. Mignon la Grange (Randburg, 13.47) and Kyla Nienaber (Noordheuwel, 12.39) took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the high jump for girls’ u19, Garsfontein’s Mia Janse van Rensburg (1.73m) edged closer to her personal best of 1.76m, which she achieved during last year’s Super Inter-High. Janse van Rensburg has already represented South Africa at senior level in the African Championships.

Affies’ Anje Bezuidenhout will also feel happy after her clearance of 1.70m in the u16 age group.

Janelle Kirkpatrick (u14) of Menlopark showed off her versatility once again, winning the 90m hurdles and capturing gold in the long jump with a best of 5.52m.

Potchefstroom Gimnasium’s Stephane Hook produced a superb performance in the u16 javelin for girls, launching her winning throw 43.06m.

  • Hurdlers’ Harmse and Hattingh catch the spotlight at Noordheuwel Top 15

It was a typical hot summer day on the highveld, and the athletes produced even hotter performances during Noordheuwel’s Top 15 meeting in Krugersdorp on Wednesday.

The athletics meeting was hosted on Nories’ tartan track which, at 1 777 metres above sea level, is the highest of its kind in Africa.

The best performance according to the APE points system belonged to Llewellyn Harmse, of Monument, who won the u19 400m hurdles for boys in 52.15 seconds. That gave him 971 points, which would have been good for a bronze medal at last year’s ASA Junior Championship (u20).

In the u17 400m hurdles, Franco Hattingh (Kempton Park) also produced an impressive performance, winning in 52.82 seconds.

Two of the three track records bettered during the meeting happened in the sprint hurdles events. Enrique Bosch (Helpmekaar) won the 100m hurdles for boys u15 in 13.08 seconds to remove Francois Tredoux of Waterkloof’s record of 13.12 seconds from the record book. That mark had stood since 2008.

In the boys’ u19 110m hurdles, Menlopark’s Werner Bezuidenhout flew to victory in an excellent time of 13.76 seconds, which improved upon the previous record of 14.11, set by Roelof van der Walt (Helpmekaar)  in 2018.

Bezuidenhout added another gold medal in the 100m sprint, clocking 10.66 seconds. The competition was a lot tighter than in the hurdles, however, with Gordon Maluleke (Oos-Moot, 10,78), Cheswill Jooste (Noordheuwel, 10.88), and Shawlynn Mienies (Dinamika, 10.94) all dipping under 11 seconds.

Maluleke claimed gold in the 200m sprint in a good time of 21.83 seconds, with Mienies (22.28) on his heels.

Jooste, a massive counterattacking threat, will be a strong contender for the fullback berth in the South African Schools’ rugby team later this year. No doubt, some opposition rugby coaches are losing a bit of sleep ahead of their matches against Noordheuwel this season.

The South African u16 champion of 2023, Jaco van der Westhuyzen (Ben Viljoen), showed a clean pair of heels to his opponents in the u16 100m sprint, winning in 10.90 seconds. He is the son of the former Springbok, Sharks, and Blue Bulls flyhalf/fullback, Jaco van der Westhuyzen.

Van der Westhuyzen Jr.’s performances helped his school, Ben Viljoen, from Groblersdal, to be crowned the champions of the smaller schools’ section of the meeting. He did the sprint double by adding a win in the 200m in 22.14 seconds. Oos-Moot’s Leandro Delport (22.17), however, gave him a proper run for his money.

In the u17 100m, Jeugland’s Ofentse Nondabula (10.65) claimed the gold medal in a faster time than Bezuidenhout’s winning mark in the u19 race.

Roux van Zyl impressed in the u19 400m, taking victory in 48.06 seconds.

Montana’s Marcel Brits produced a 915-point performance in the 1 500m for boys u17, with an outstanding time of four minutes and 3.56 seconds. He also held off Zwartkop’s Rico Coetzer (4:04.62) for the win.

  • Van der Leek impressed in tough middle distance field during Curro Hazeldean Top 14

The middle-distance running during the inaugural TUT Curro Hazeldean Top 14 meeting at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria was something to behold.

In the 3000m race for boys u19, there were no less than six athletes that dipped under nine minutes. Xavier van der Leek (Midstream College) won the race in eight minutes and 37.59 seconds. The time would not have been enough to give Van der Leek a medal during last year’s South African Junior Championship (u20) which was won in a time of 8:19.99 by Johannes Morepe (Vorentoe).

It is however still early in the season and Van der Leek would have gained some valuable experience in this closely contested race on Wednesday. Behind Van der Leek – Kevin Hickley (Hans Moore, 8:39.07), Zane Strydom (Helpmekaar, 8:47.81), Koketso Gaborone (Tuks Sports School, 8:51.78), Divan de Vries (Affies, 8:52.78) and Lutho Timati (Curro Hazeldean, 8:59.61) all managed to dip in under nine minutes.

In the u17 race for boys, it was also a closely contested affair. Tuks Sports Schools’ Tshepang Tshivulu took the honours in eight minutes and 45.69 seconds. On his heels, Regardt Hattingh (Affies, 8:47.51) and Siya Mbeleki (8:50.04) pushed him till the end.

Skole se interhuis-rekords bied daarom altyd interessante leesstof.
