    World Cup Final Showdown: A look at the players and their alma maters

    There is no test match like one between the Springboks and the All Blacks and when the two side’s meet each other in a World Cup final even more so.

    Both countries success on the rugby field could be traced back to the strong rugby culture within their school systems.

    Three schools has three representatives each in Saturday’s World Cup final in the Stade de France in Paris. They are Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch, Francis Douglas Memorial of Westown and St Kentigern College in Auckland.

    Paul Roos Gimnasium also has produced the most Springboks since South Africa’s first test played back in 1891. The three representatives from the Maroon Machine are Damian Willemse, Steven Kitshoff and Willie le Roux.

    Francis Douglas Memorial in New Plymouth is the alma mater to the three Barrett-brothers – Beauden, Jordie and Scott who all will be starting for the All Blacks in the final.

    St Kentigerns College is a private school in Auckland who will be represented by Dalton Papali’i, Finlay Christie and Tamaiti Williams in the final.

    In total 37 schools will be represented in the final – with the Springbok team consisting of players from 22 schools, while the All Blacks comes from 15 schools.

  • Some new faces and overseas teams for Wildeklawer of 2024

    Some new faces and overseas teams for Wildeklawer of 2024

    KIMBERLEY. – The annual Absa Wildeklawer-tournament will have some international flavour for the 2024-edition of South Africa’s premier schools rugby festival.

    Two school teams from New Zealand and England respectively will also be in action in an even bigger Absa Wildeklawer in 2024, with the English team yet to be announced. The New Zealand school will be St John’s College from Hamilton.

    The festival of rugby will also be bigger than ever before with some new faces that will make their debut in 2024, while a few former participants will also return to showcase their prowess.

    Noordheuwel of Krugersdorp and Nico Malan of Humansdorp will be making their debuts at next year’s event, while Waterkloof and Marlow Landbou will make their return to the annual festival.

    The tournament will be hosted once again by Hoërskool Diamantveld from 1 to 4 May in Kimberley.

    The main match on the final day will be one of the highlights of the tournament as Grey College and Garsfontein will face each other. Paarl Gimnasium and Helpmekaar will lock horns in the main curtain raiser to the main match.

    Paul Roos will face Monument of Krugersdorp in their first match in Kimberley, while Affies will take on Paarl Boys’ High in their first clash on the Wednesday. The tournament will start with the hosts, Diamantveld, taking on the Wolramme from Marlow Landbou.

    The main match on the Thursday will be between Grey College and Maritzburg College. This clash would also generate some interest as these two schools have traditionally faced each other in interschools on an annual basis.

    Boishaai will take on Durban High School in their second clash in the City of Diamonds.

    Die Hoërskool Randburg se Mignon la Grange het haar atletiekseisoen met twee stewige vertonings tydens die eerste Egoli-byeenkoms in die UJ-stadion in Johannesburg afgeskop.

    La Grange het met haar vertonings in die gewigstoot en diskus vir meisies o.17 die twee beste vertonings deur ‘n meisie op die byeenkoms gelewer.

    Sy het in die gewigstoot losgetrek en die ysterbal op 15.85m laat grondvat. Dit het aan haar ‘n totaal van 961 punte besorg. Renscha van Wyk (Hoërskool Klerksdorp) en Nicole Alberts (Helpmekaar-kollege) het onderskeidelik tweede en derde albei met beste pogings van 13.25m.

    La Grange was in die diskus met ‘n poging van 41.97m baas. Dit is nog nie naby haar beste afstand van verlede seisoen van 50.10m tydens die Tuks Top 10 nie, maar nogstans ‘n goeie afstand om die seisoen mee te begin.

    Helpmekaar se Keira Pienaar het in die o.16-afdeling vir meisies in die gewigstoot en diskus onderskeidelik met afstande van 13.16m en 38.56m goue medaljes verower.

    Randburg se naelloper Chane Vermeulen het ook ‘n uitmuntende byeenkoms beleef deur in die 100m en 200m vir meisies o.17 koning te kraai. Vermeulen het die 100m in 12.16 sekondes afgeblits, terwyl sy in 24.27 sekondes eerste oor die eindstreep in die 200m was.

    Haar spanmaat Kaili Botje was in albei nommers kort op haar hakke in onderskeidelik 12.19 sekondes en 24.68 sekondes oor die eindstreep.

    Caylen Jenkins van die Hoërskool Noordheuwel, het haar seisoen ook met twee stewige vertonings in die kort- sowel as die lang-hekkies vir meisies o.15 begin.

    Sy het goud in die 90m-hekkies in ‘n tyd van 13.63 sekondes verower. In die 300m-hekkies het sy ook geen gelyke in ‘n tyd van 46.11 sekondes gehad nie.

    In die 90m-hekkies vir meisies o.14 het Klerksdorp se Kate-Lynn Fourie ook ‘n stewige vertoning gelewer. Sy het dié nommer in 13.75 sekondes gewen om 922 punte op die table te verdien.

    Julindi Wilkins ook van Klerksdorp sal ook meer as tevrede met haar vertoning in die spiesgooi vir meisies o.16 voel. Sy het die spies 43.27 meter vêr geslinger.
