The Vodacom Blue Bulls, MTN Golden Lions and Sharks continued to stamp their authority in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship this past weekend, allowing them to maintain their lead over the chasing sides on the log standings.

The Blue Bulls were in fine form as they cruised to a 56-21 victory against the Toyota Free State at Loftus Versfeld to stretch their unbeaten run to five matches, while the MTN Golden Lions defeated Border 19-3 in East London and the Sharks registered a 25-19 victory against DHL Western Province at Newlands.

The wet weather in Cape Town set the scene for a scrappy first half between DHL Western Province and the Sharks, with the only points in the half scored compliments of a penalty by Sharks flyhalf Jean-Luc Du Plessis.
The second half, however, proved to be tightly-fought as each side scored three tries. Sharks right wing Michael Cloete crossed the tryline first, but their lead was short-lived as Western Province replacement hooker Ramone Samuels crashed over for their first try. The Sharks, however, continued to make their presence felt on attack and they managed to create some daylight between themselves and WP thanks to two tries in six minutes by Neil Maritz and Cameron Wright respectively.

The home team, however, hit back strongly in the last 11 minutes as they crossed the tryline twice to match the Sharks’ three tries. But a drop goal by Sharks centre Sandile Kubeka and Du Plessis’ penalty proved to be the difference for the KwaZulu-Natal team on the scoreboard.

Border 3 (3) MTN Golden Lions 19 (5)

The clash in East London proved to be a tight affair from the outset as the teams threw everything at each other on attack and defence. Such was the closeness of the first half only eight points were scored in total, with Border slotting over a penalty, while MTN Golden Lions flank Jaun Vorster crashed over for a try.

The Lions, however, took control of the match in the second half, and made the most of their attacking opportunities, which earned them two second-half tries. The sustained pressure by the forwards allowed Vorster to crash over for his second try in the 41st minute, while captain and No8 Sikhumbuzo Mabuza scored another 11 minutes from time as Border were reduced to 14 men with Conor-Terrah Brockschmidt sin-binned.

This earned them a 19-3 win.

Vodacom Blue Bulls 56 (21) Toyota Free State 21 (9)

The Vodacom Blue Bulls completely outplayed Toyota Free State in front of their home crowd for a convincing 56-21 victory, which allowed them to continue their winning run in the competition and stretch their lead at the top of the table to five points.

Such was the high standard of their play they racked up nine tries and leaked only two, in what proved to be a balanced display between their forwards and backs.

Two tries in six minutes handed the Blue Bulls a 14-0 lead 10 minutes into the clash, but a drop goal and two subsequent penalties by Free State flyhalf Warren Potgieter closed the gap. Four tries by the Bulls in 15 minutes before and after half time, however, pushed the game out of reach for the visitors. But the home team were not done yet, as Ganfried May and Hendrik Viljoen took the tally to nine tries.
With the victory in the bag with a few minutes to go and the Bulls let their guard down and allowed the Free State to score two late tries. But with the damage already done, the Bulls were satisfied with their 50-point score.

Paarl Gimnasium closed the gap between them and Affies of Pretoria after a 31-3 victory over Stellenberg on Saturday. Gimmies are still in second place on School of Rugby’s newest rankings only 0.09 points being Affies who are still on top of the rankings. 

Paarl Gimnasium will play Drostdy THS in their final match of the season, while Affies already finished their obligations for the year. Affies are unbeaten, while Paarl Gimnasium is also still unbeaten. They however played to a 17-all draw to 11th ranked Oakdale Landbou earlier in the season.

DHL Western Province and the Vodacom Blue Bulls continued to lead the way in the A Division of the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship this past weekend as they both secured their fourth victory in five matches to retain their lead at the top of the log standings.

Western Province registered a convincing 20-3 victory against the Sharks at Newlands, while the Blue Bulls defeated Toyota Free State 40-27 at Loftus Versfeld.

In the other match, the MTN Golden Lions registered an invaluable 45-16 away-win against Border in East London to remain in the top four on the standings.

DHL Western Province 20 (13) Sharks 3 (3)

In Cape Town penalties dominated the early exchanges between DHL Western Province and the Sharks as the teams tested one another on attack and defence. This allowed Western Province flyhalf Tim Swiel and his opposite number Robert du Preez to get their teams on the scoreboard in the first quarter. The home team, however, did well to gain momentum on attack and they earned the rewards with captain and flank Joshua Katzen crossing the tryline in the 23rd minute for an 8-3 lead. Swiel converted and slotted over a penalty minutes later to push his team into a 13-3 lead at the break.

Western Province built on their first-half dominance soon after returning to the field with wing Craig Barry crossing the tryline for their second five-pointer, which Swiel converted for a morale-boosting 20-3 lead. The Sharks stepped up their game and did well to contain the home side for the rest of the match, but they were denied any further point-scoring chances by the solid WP defence, and had to settle for a single penalty to show for their efforts.

Border 16 (9) MTN Golden Lions 45 (21)

The MTN Golden Lions were convincing in their showing against Border at the BCM Stadium despite being reduced to 14 men in the ninth minute as Mark Pretorius was red-carded. Such was the high quality of their performance they scored six tries to one to secure their third victory of the season. The victory kept them within striking distance of the log-leaders for a semifinal spot later in the season.

The Gauteng team started with a bang as Ruan Venter crossed the tryline in the third minute, with Marais Schmidt and Ruan Janse van Rensburg following in the first half to take a commanding lead. Their ill-discipline, however, allowed Border to work their way onto the scoreboard with fullback Janco Lehmann slotting over three penalties.

Border showed their fighting spirit early in the second half and wasted no time inflating their lead, with Shaun Nieuwenhuyzen dotting down the ball over the tryline, which Lehmann converted. But unfortunately their efforts were cancelled out as the Lions continued their romp with Damian Engledoe running in two tries and Stephan de Wit touching down with two minutes to go to secure their bonus-point victory. Golden Lions fullback Marais Schmidt was particularly influential, as he slotted over six conversions and a penalty to add to his try for a personal total of 20 points.

Vodacom Blue Bulls 40 (19) Toyota Free State 27 (14)

The Vodacom Blue Bulls also started strongly in their clash against the Toyota Free State as they ran in three first-half tries to only by the visitors. But their discipline let them down, allowing Free State’s Jan Strumpher to kick three penalties, which left them only five points behind at the break.

Strumpher added two penalties in the third quarter, but unfortunately this was not enough to counter the Bulls’ impressive attack. The home team did well to control proceedings and again used their point-scoring chances well, which allowed them to seal the bonus-point try in the 53rd minute, which they followed up by another two. The Free State, however, hit back with a consolation try in the last minute to salvage some pride and reduce the deficit on the scoreboard to 40-27.

LOUIS BOTHA het die rugbyspan van Jim Fouché as die Vrystaatse A1-liga kampioen onttroon. Louis Botha het JF 30-18 op ‘n winderige veld van Hoërskool Fichardtpark in die eindstryd van die liga getroef.

Die kampioen het dit boonop sonder sy twee Suid-Afrikaanse Skole-spelers, die flank Fifi Rampeta en Ox Nche vermag. Die twee het die nasionale span Saterdag teen Wallis tot ‘n oorwinning van 14-13 gehelp.

Hulle is albei egter terug vir die Kovsiestreek-kompetisie se Shimla-liga (vir mediumskole) se halfeindstryd eerskomende Saterdag teen Hentie Cilliers van Virginia. Noord-Kaap van Kimberley en Voortrekker van Bethlehem sê mekaar in die ander halfeindstryd die stryd aan.

Louis Botha se senter Ali Mgijima was puik in die Vrystaatse eindstryd. Hy het ‘n paar harde duikslae op Jim Fouché se spelers uitgevoer. Die span se haker, Grayden Benn was voorlangs sy span se beste speler. Hoewel die wenspan se lynstaanspel in die hewige wind gesukkel het.

Louis Botha kon nie in die tweede helfte daarin slaag om punte aan te teken nie. Hy het rustyd 30-18 voorgeloop.

In die Vrystaatse B2-eindstryd het die Hoër Landbouskool Hendrik Potgieter van Reddersburg vir Seonela 22-10 tot oorgawe gedwing. Die span sal nou vir Bultfontein in die halfeindstryd van die Kovsiestreek-kompetisie se nuutste liga die Colt-liga pak. Bultfontein en die Hoërskool Sandveld van Wesselsbron is die twee verteenwoordigers van die Griffons in die liga.

Die Hoërskool Blinkklip van Postmasburg wag in die ander halfeindstryd van die Colt-liga op Sandveld.

Vir Reddersburg het die senter Donovan Pretorius en slot Lukas Muller in die sege oor Seonela uitgeblink. Muller het 14 keer omgekeerde balbesit in die eindstryd verseker.

DAAR is ‘n sêding wat lui jy is so goed soos jou laaste wedstryd. En die rugbyspan van Grey-kollege van 2013 het met ‘n oorwinning van 40-8 oor Paul Roos Gimnasium in die Markotter-stadion in Stellenbosch gesorg dat hy vir sy laaste wedstryd onthou sal word.

Die span van Bloemfontein was vanjaar slegs twee keer aan die verloorkant teen Hoërskool Outeniqua en die Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool van Pretoria. Albei die spanne spog vanjaar waarskynlik met die beste spanne in die geskiedenis van hulle skole. Affies het vanjaar vir die eerste keer in sy geskiedenis daarin geslaag om al sy wedstryde tydens ‘n seisoen te wen.

Grey se oorwinning oor Paul Roos ewenaar die rekord vir die grootste oorwinning wat die span van die Rosestad nog in die interskole-kragmeting behaal het. Die punteverskil van 32 punte het die vorige rekord van die span van 2008 geëwenaar wat destyds ‘n sege van 47-15 behaal het. Indien die veld nie so nat en glibberig weens al die reën was nie sou Grey ongetwyfeld sy grootste sege nog oor die span van die Eikestad behaal het.

Die tuisspan het die meeste van die speelwerk in die eerste helfte gedoen, met Grey wat gesukkel het om balbesit te behou. Hoewel dié span se vleuel, Joel Heugh die besoekers probleme met sy flinke voetwerk op verdediging besorg het, het hy nie sy skopskoen aangehad nie. Grey het rustyd met ‘n skamele voorsprong van 6-3 gaan rus.

Paul Roos se ander vleuel Edwill van der Merwe het ook ‘n hele paar gevaarlike lopies op die aanval ingekry. Die span van Bloemfontein se voorspelers was meer fisiek in die tweede helfte as in die eerste helfte en veral die stut Andrew du Plessis, slot De Wet Bezuidenhout en flank Luan Reynders het met inklimspel by die afbreekpunte en lakwerk vir die Stellenboschers tot oorgawe gedwing.

Agterlangs het die heelagter, Henry Immelman telkens die eerste verdediger geklop en ‘n goeie vertoning met ‘n drie afgerond.

The SA Schools team on Saturday showed nerves of steel to hold onto a narrow 14-13 lead against Wales in their final clash in the International Under-18 Series at Drostdy Tegniese Hoërskool in Worcester to complete the series unbeaten.

Strong winds complicated matters for both teams from the outset and forced them to eliminate kicking from their game. This in turn resulted in most of the rugby being played in the middle of the field in the first half, with the teams sticking to a tight game with close passing.

Fortunately for the hosts all the hard work this week to improve their set pieces worked as they withstood the pressure exerted by the powerful Welsh pack, while their defence again proved to be the highlight of their performance.

Welsh flyhalf Luke Price opened the scoring for the visitors 14 minutes into the match thanks to a scrum penalty following a few tight exchanges.

This narrow 3-0 lead gave them a mental edge as they showed more innovation on attack and stretched the home team’s defence. SA, however, built on the tenacious defensive effort from their clash against France and as they shut out Wales twice.

The tables turned on attack soon after as SA hit back with Jean-Luc Du Preez scoring a fantastic team try, which flyhalf Brandon Thomson converted for a 7-3 lead. The forwards were instrumental in the try as they applied pressure up-front and spread the ball wide to Du Preez, who was open on the wing.

But their lead was short-lived as Wales right wing Ashton Hewitt out-sprinted two defenders to dot down the ball over the tryline from a perfect grubber kick which forced them back into a one-point lead.

The home team continued to stamp their authority as the half neared a close as they camped in Wales’ 22 with the forwards building phases in an attempt to bash their way over the advantage line. The pressure eventually got to Wales, who committed numbers to breakdown but neglected the wing, which paved the way for Leolin Zass to cross the tryline. Thomson converted, which earned SA an encouraging 14-8 lead at the break.

SA’s forwards continued to lay a solid platform up-front, which allowed them to spend a fair amount of time in Wales’ half.

Wales, however, earned the rewards for using their forwards to edge their way over the advantage line, with Hewitt scoring his second try of the day after finding space on the right side of the field following a strong showing by the pack. But they again failed to convert, leaving the team one point behind on 14-13 with the clock ticking.

Wales managed to win a turnover in SA’s 22 in the dying seconds and tried hard to breach the defence to snatch a last-minute victory. But their efforts proved fruitless as SA held them out for the victory.

In the earlier matches England defeated France 12-8 and the Italian Under-18 team registered a convincing 36-12 victory against the Boland XV.
