  • Junior Springboks overcome tenacious England

South Africa Under-20 scored a hard-fought 31-24 victory over a tenacious England in La Roche-sur-Yon in France on Sunday evening to register their second consecutive victory at the IRB Junior World Championship (JWC).
The Junior Springboks, who are the defending champions, consolidated their place on top of the standings in Pool A (9 points) and now have one more group match to negotiate before the play-offs. They play tournament hosts France at the same venue on Thursday.

South Africa raced into a 21-0 lead after an impressive start and will perhaps feel disappointed that they did not manage to finish in a more commanding fashion. Flying wing Seabelo Senatla, scorer of four tries against the USA last week, was denied another hat trick of tries after his third effort was disallowed for an earlier infringement.

A fourth try and the accompanying bonus point would have confirmed South Africa’s place in the semi-finals with a match to spare.

They got off to a flying start and were leading 21-0 after 30 minutes of play in the first half, with the Junior Springboks pinning England in their own half with some clever positional kicks and crunching tackles.

Senatla scored two tries, one out wide after a good backline movement and another with a clever interception, while flyhalf Robert du Preez slotted a conversion and two penalties to keep the pressure in England.

The English however started to get into the match towards the end of the first half and had a try disallowed after a knock-on in the build-up. They were however rewarded for their persistence when Sam Hill (centre) crossed the line after a good offload from flyhalf Henry Slade.

Slade slotted the conversion to make the score 21-7 at halftime. A few minutes after the restart England scored again when Elliot Stooke (lock) dotted down in the corner and Slade converted from a difficult angle to reduce the score to 21-14.

But the SA U20 struck back when imposing flanker Jacques du Plessis crashed over in the corner for the team’s third try, while pivot Du Preez added a conversion and a penalty to keep England at bay.

But England fought back with some hard forward surges and they were rewarded when Stooke and Henry Purdy (reserve prop) crashed over for tries in the corner. Slade kept his side within striking distance with his accurate kicking boot, adding two conversions and a penalty.

Irne Herbst (SA U20 lock) and Tom Price (England U20 replacement flanker) were both yellow carded towards the end after a scuffle.

Dawie Theron, the SA Under-20 coach, said afterwards he was glad for the win but disappointed that his team could not secure a valuable bonus point.

“We made a very good start but did not manage to capitalise on it. This was a very good win against an English team that have won the Under-20 Six Nations and have played much longer together as a team.

“I am disappointed that we did not keep our discipline in the second half, but there were also some decisions made which were out of our control and influenced the play in the second half. We will now regroup and prepare for our next match against France, who will no doubt be a difficult customer in front of their home fans,” said Theron.

    Scorers:

South Africa U20 (21) 31: Tries: Seabelo Senatla (2), Jacques du Plessis. Conversions: Robert du Preez (2). Penalties: Du Preez (4)
England U20 (7) 24: Tries: Sam Hill, Elliott Stooke, Hendry Purdy. Conversions: Henry Slade (3), Penalty: Slade

  • Junior Boks retain starting team for England

Dawie Theron, the South Africa Under-20 coach, has kept his starting fifteen unchanged for the IRB Junior World Championship Pool A fixture against England on Sunday.

There is however one change on the bench, with lock Jannes Kirsten (Vodacom Blue Bulls) replacing Kwagga Smit (flank, MTN Golden Lions).

The Junior Springboks’ second pool match will kick off at 16:45 in the Stade Henri Desgrange in La Roche-sur-Yon.

South Africa’s runway 97-0 victory over the United States on Wednesday has placed them top of Pool A with five points. The three pool winners and the best placed pools runner-up will advance through to the semi-finals.

Theron, who led the Junior Springboks to their first JWC title in 2012, explained that the coaching staff resisted the temptation to change the starting fifteen because they wanted to maintain the continuity.

According to Theron England is a strong, physical side and his team will have to front up for the full 80 minutes.

“Their core skills are very good and we will play against a very well-prepared team. They have good structures in place, many of the players came through the Premiership academies and they play on a regular basis together as a team,” said Theron.

The Junior Springboks coach added the approach of his team will be to build on their momentum from the first game:

“We will have to be disciplined and play with the same energy as the team showed against the United States.”

    A-veld: 09:00: Griffons LSOB t. Vrystaat LSOB; 09:50: Griffons-Platteland se Akademiespan t. Vrystaat-Akademie B; 11:10: Griffons o.19 t. Vrystaat-Arende; 12:30: Griffons-Akademie t. • Preview – Diocesan College vs. Rondebosch Boys’ High

Twice a year, every year, boys walk the 400 or so metres along Tullyallen Road to play a rugby match. It is a wonderful tradition.

They are the same sort of schools – same sort of boys, same sort of staffs, same sport of parents, same sort of aspirations, same sort of manners, but none of that stops them from getting stuck in on the rugby field, as well they should. Mercifully it is a wholesome passion and then you walk back the 400 or so metres, knowing there will be another one later.

Look back down the years as far as your experience takes you and try to pick the nasty incidents between the two schools. They hardly exist and so it is possible and in fact desirable to play two matches each year. There is no residue of acrimony.

There is added lustre this year as it has been chosen as a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools and will be shown on television.

This one, at Bishops, the 183rd between the two schools, is the first for 2013, a year when Rondebosch look to have the upper hand.

Bishops have lost their last four matches in a row, seven altogether and a draw in 12 matches. But then, as they have always done, they play top opponents. So do Rondebosch. They have lost three and drawn one of their 10 matches.

    Results against Common Opponents

Paul Roos: Bishops drew 22-22; Rondebosch lost 10-5
Paarl Gim: Bishops lost 24-3; Rondebosch lost 35-14
SACS: Bishops lost 22-5; Rondebosch won 41-18
Wynberg: Bishops lost 42-28; Rondebosch drew 10-10

    Rondebosch look stronger.
    Representative Players

Rondebosch also have more players chosen to represent Western Province teams. Three of their players have been chosen to go to Craven Week – fullback Khanyo Ngcukana and tighthead Brett Paulse – and two made the Western Province Academy Week side – scrumhalf Stef de Gouveia and loosehead Kyle White. Bishops has one in each side – eighthman Saud Abrahams for Craven Week and hooker Cuan Hablutzel for the Academy Week.

All of those are a consolation for Rondebosch and perhaps a concern for Bishops but on the day anything can happen. Just look at the 2011 results down below to see how things can fluctuate.

    Rugby Programme and Venues

The Piley Rees Field is named for the legendary schoolmaster and rugby coach who had been a master at Bishops from 1922 to 1967. He died in 1975 and the field was named after him in 1983.

The fields on the Top Field – to the right as you come down the Avenue – take their names from what they were next to, The Avenue Field was and still is next to the Avenue. The Range was next to the shooting range before it was moved to the far side of the Oaks. Parallel and next to the Range is the Cemetery because it was next to the cemetery behind St Thomas’s Church, where the Astroturf now is. When the cemetery was deconsecrated the field was used for rugby and called the Graveyard.

The Fields outside of the school in the dip next to the river were once a farm. JW Lutgens acquired the farm in 1799 and sop that low-lying part was called Lutgensvale.

Rondebosch play Bishops at Bishops in a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match on Saturday, and they will be wearing purple hose.

The Rondebosch 1st XV are doing this, not as a fashion statement, but to increase awareness of all forms of bullkying in support of the JAG Foundation’s BullyProof campaign which culminates with South Africa’s first National Bullying Awareness Day on 26 July 2013,

The JAGBullyProof purple socks can be purchased for R100 . Supporters receive a pair of socks, and another pair of purple socks is donated to a child at one of the underprivileged JAGBully-Proof schools.

  • Murambiwa’s Craven Week Spirits High

    Murambiwa’s Craven Week Spirits High

ZIMBABWE Under-18 rugby coach Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa believes the school side that was selected at the weekend has the potential to match the Class of 2007, which went undefeated at the annual festival.

In 2007, Murambiwa guided Zimbabwe to finish as the third-best side at the week-long festival having beaten Border CD (11-6) in the opening game before overpowering Border (27-5) and rounding up their games with a 22-18 win against bitter rivals Namibia. This was the first time since 1980, that the schools side had managed such a feat and finishing among the top three teams behind Free State and Blue Bulls was the best result Zimbabwe had managed at the 18-team competition.

Given there are seven players from last year’s side that took part in the 2012 Port Elizabeth edition of the festival, the former Sables coach is confident his boys will do enough to produce the best results. Zimbabwe have been drawn in the same pool with Griquas, Border, Western Province, Blue Bulls, Limpopo Bulls, Namibia, Pumas, KwaZulu Natal and Boland and will face Griquas in their opening game on July 8, at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

From last year’s side, Thabani Mujeni, Rukudzo Gona, Nicholas Burnett, Brendon Mandivenga, Tapiwa Murangani, Barend Moolman and Alexander Zwart have retained their places in the side while Sebastian Roche and Brandon Scheepers have been left out of the team. Scheepers was ruled out following knee injuries that he sustained two weeks ago that are likely to carry over the duration of the festival while Roche was technically incompetent.

The side also includes the likes of St George’s College winger Jabulani Mutukwa, who had a stint in England last year, and Mashaya, who was part of the Zimbabwe Under-19 side that took part in the Junior Africa Cup at Prince Edward School last year. “We also have the likes of Brandon Boshi, another winger from St George’s College, who is very strong, Tawanda Ngosi, and in general this is the quickest back line I have had since I started coaching the Craven Week side.

All the backliners can run below 11 seconds (per 100 meters), they are so skilled and very quick and I believe we have what it takes to match the Class of 2007.
