  • Preview – Outeniqua vs. Paarl Gimnasium

Preview – Outeniqua vs. Paarl Gimnasium

This is the big one. It’s the one the whole country will have an interest in – this Premier Interschools match, Gimmies vs Kwaggas, Paarl Gim vs Outeniqua in beautiful George, 1 vs 3 with both teams in great form.

Outeniqua are ranked No.1 on the FNB Top 20 at the moment with the rare scalp of Grey Bloem hanging from their belts. Paarl Gim are at No.3, and you get the feeling that they are waiting to jump. They really are two top schools – traditionally and on current form.

Last year seven Gimmies played for Western Province at Craven Week, and of the seven four are back – Grant Hermanus, Rikus Bothma, who was one of the acknowledged stars at the Kearsney Easter Festival, Jacques Vermeulen and lock JD Schickerling, who played for SA Schools last year.

Outeniqua are even better off. Last year they had 14 players in the lively South Western Districts team and seven of them are back – Stefaan Grundlingh, Geor Malan, who is this year’s captain, Remu Malan, Dewald Human, Duhan van der Merwe, Warrick Gelant, Douw Schoeman and Leighton Eksteen. In addition eighthman Dian Koen played for Boland at Craven Week last year when he was at Hermanus High School. Of those eight Craven Week players Duhan van der Merwe, who was the top try-scorer at Craven Week, and Gelant played SA Schools. That is not all Dirk Oosthuizen was in the South Western Districts Under-19 side and Gregory Nel in the Academy side. Four have played for South Western Districts at the Grant Khomo Week – Marné Botha, Wynand de Necker, Le Roux Baard and tall Eduard Zandberg who was also chosen for South Africa’s elite Under-16 squad.

Certainly that is what the teams history says, for 16 of the 22 players have played representative rugby – 15 for South Western Districts and one for Boland last year – Dian Koen, who was at Hermanus High School last year.

Gimmies are a big side and may well want to overpower the Kwaggas’ pack but their speedy backs who have an uncanny understanding amongst them selves and who act on intuition are brilliant.

    This Year:

Both sides are unbeaten. Both have played Westville and Tygerberg, with similar results

Westville: Outeniqua won 33-7, Paarl Gim 46-7
Tygerberg: Outeniqua won 68-3, Paarl Gim 55-3

It probably is a fluke but that adds up to 101-10 each!

Outeniqua has beaten Grey College 22-20, which is a huge feat in itself, EG Jansen 57-34, Paarl Boys’ High 45-36 and Punt 71-3. Gim have played a match fewer because Duineveld withdrew from their match. They beat Glenwood 40-12, Kearsney 33-6 and the Stellenbosch Academy 40-17

This match on Saturday in Paarl will be special and it could be desperately close. One just hopes that the sides will be free to give expression to their talents. It is after all Freedom Day.

The referee is Jason Jaftha, one of South Africa’s top referees, fresh from refereeing Super Rugby. He will help to make the match special.

  • Preview – St. Andrew’s College vs. Graeme College

Preview – St. Andrew’s College vs. Graeme College

On Saturday St Andrew’s walk down the dip, over Beaufort Street and up to Somerset Heights and Graeme College for an FNB Classic Clash between two of the oldest schools in the Eastern Cape.

St Andrew’s was founded in 1855, Graeme College in 1873 as the Grahamstown Public School or the Public Undenominational School, then Victoria High Schools , then Victoria Boys’ High and then, from 1939, Graeme College.

They started playing each other in the 1870s, at first fairly casually. After all they were neighbours and matches happened easily. Mostly St Andrew’s have been the winners, sometimes by big scores, as in 2010 when they won 76-0. But things have been much closer the last two years – 10-7 in 2011 and 10-6 in 2012. That suggests that the unlikely is decidedly possible.

Both schools take their rugby seriously. In Graeme’s case that is not surprising as their headmaster is Peter Reed, a provincial scrumhalf in his day.

St Andrew’s have been doing well this year and are presently ranked 10th on the FNB Top 20. They remain unbeaten after victories over Pretoria Boys High (22-20), Helpmekaar (32-16), St Stithians (32-16), Bishops (28-21), Pearson (21-12) and Daniël Pienaar (29-7). Graeme have lost just one match – 8-3 to Selborne. They had big wins over Gill of Somerset East (72-22), Volkskool of Graaff-Reinet (33-3), Stirling of East London (40-0) and last weekend, Cambridge (19-13). Graeme believe the Classic Clash could be a close affair.

Big St Andrew’s lock Sintu Manjezi is the only player in the two teams for Saturday who has been to Craven Week – a strong player. He and the Graeme captain Gordon-Wayne Plaaitjies, are both playing in the 1st XV for their third year. The Graeme vice-captain Sipiwe Mhlom was in the Eastern Province Academy Week side while scrumhalf Craig Williams and flank Ethan September (were at the Grant Khomo Week for provincial Under-16 teams). St Andrew’s certainly have great respect for this Graeme side who have 13 players back from their 2012 side.

It will be a great day in Grahamstown on Saturday. Such derbies, ancient and between neighbours, is the cause of great interest in the City of Saints and Schools.

  • Preview – Duineveld vs. Upington HS

Preview – Duineveld vs. Upington HS

On Saturday, 27 April 2013, Duineveld host Hoërskool Upington to an FNB Classic Clash.

Upington on the fertile banks of the Orange River has two really strong rugby schools – Duineveld and Upington, Velties and Uppies. They are the schools who can compete with any other school in South Africa and dominate the Griqualand West Country Districts side, which is the name for the old Northwest Cape. Last year 17 of the 22 players who went to Craven Week were from those two schools. There was then one each from Kalahari of Kuruman, Kathu, Nababeep, Posmasburg and Concordia. None of the six Velties is back in their team this year and only two of the 11 Uppies – fullback Darryl de Wee and eighthman Jasper Wiese.

The two schools meet twice a year. Each time it’s an Interjol. This first one is the Klein Interjol. The match in the third term is the Groot Interjol. The contact and competition goes well beyond rugby and yet it is the rugby that counts most, especially the 1st XV match. The competition includes chess, shooting, hockey for boys and girls and netball.

It is likely to be close. In 2010 Duineveld won the Klein Interjol 25-6. In 2011 and 2012 Uppies won – 33-12 and 12.10. One thing is certain there will be a big crowd at Duineveld for Saturday’s match. The result is beyond prediction. Last year Uppies were doing badly while Duineveld were doing really well, but Uppies won.

This year Duineveld have played two teams ranked in the FNB Top 20 – Grey College of Bloemfontein and Diamantveld. They lost both – 52-13 and 26-19. They also lost to Jim Fouché and drew with Hugenote of Springs. They have yet to win a match but have been playing top opposition.

Uppies have beaten Namakwaland, Wolmaransstad and Bellville, the last a good win. But they have lost to Kalahari, as they did last year, Montagu and Hermanus.

Adding lustre to this year’s match will be the referee – Jonathan Kaplan, the most experienced Test referee in the history of the game. His presence will be unforgettable for the teams. He referees a Vodacom Cup match in Potchefstroom on Friday evening and then heads for Upington on Saturday.

    The teams:

Upington HS: 15 Darryl de Wee, 14 Junior van der Merwe, 13 Johnathan Steenkamp, 12 DJ Dry, 11 Gert Rupping, 10 DJ van den Heever, 9 Roschè Naudé, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Alvin Steenkamp, 6 Louw Scholtz, 5 Willem Koeglenberg , 4 Edaurd Killian, 3 Thapelo Masenge, 2 Bryan van der Merwe, 1 Sergio Boer. Replacements: 16 Gert Nel, 17 Hakiti du Plessis, 18 Lewies Karsten, 19 Immaculate Vundisa, 20 Franclyn Botha, 21 Dylon Magerman, 22 Chevee Niewenhuizen.

Duineveld: 15 Christiaan du Plessis, 14 Liam Griebenhauw, 13 Attie Brits, 12 Brendan-Lee Faro, 11 Chris Opperman, 10 Cobus van Niekerk, 9 Coenie Lamprecht, 8 Junior Burger, 7 Petri van der Merwe, 6 Theunis Visser, 5 Ryno Karstens, 4 Rayno Nel, , 3 Jan-Hendrik van Wyk, 2 Hendri Nel, 1 Hanro Visagie. Replacements: 16 Jaco Lategan, 17 Corné Nieuwoudt, 18 Koos Page, 19 Barend Geldenhuys, 20 Etienne Kruger, 21 Gideon Coetzee, 22 Elro Hough.

    Kick-off: 15:00

Venue: Dries Potgieter Stadium at Duineveld
Expected weather condition: It’s hot in Upington on the fertile strip between two deserts. Saturday will be clear with a high of 30°C, dropping to 10°C.
Referee: Jonathan Kaplan (South African Referees’ Association)

  • Preview – SACS vs. Paul Roos Gimnasium

Preview – SACS vs. Paul Roos Gimnasium

The South African College High School (SACS) play host the Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch this Saturday in their annual Winters Day derby. The match is special for many reasons. Both institutions are steeped in history and cherish this long standing rivalry.

SACS are in good form going into the game. Having beaten Boland Landbou two weeks ago will have given their team the confidence to know they can mix it with the Boland schools. There are many aspects of their play that can be improved upon but the team seems to have a belief in their game plan and in each other that makes them a formidable unit. Up front Struan Murray and Dean Basson will look to carry on their fine form, while at the back Seb Roodt has been impressive on the counter-attack.

Paul Roos are one of the great rugby schools in South Africa. One can reel off a litany of old and current Springboks and provincial players without even thinking. This year they have been a little but up and down by their lofty standards mainly as a result of missing too many kicks at poles. They lost 23-18 to Grey High in Port Elizabeth last week but left 16 points on the table. They always have talented individuals and are very well conditioned and coached. Their captain Christo van der Merwe is a live-wire and will be a menace for SACS at the breakdown. In the backs they welcome back the prolific Daniel du Plessis, their star playmaker.

SACS have not beaten Paul Roos since 2007 and will go in as under-dogs but if they play to their potential and Paul Roos again arrive without a kicker SACS could cause another major upset. With fine weather again predicted for this weekend the game should provide a cracking spectacle.

    The teams:

SACS: 15 Seb Roodt, 14 Damian Rawstorne, 13 Richard Rodgers, 12 Keagan Wheeler (captain), 11 Matthew Wadling, 10 Shane Fourie, 9 Michael Henning, 8 Devon Barnard, 7 Justin Joubert, 6 Yandisa Maqenukana, 5 Dean Basson, 4 James Ambler-Smith, 3 Wesley Futter, 2 Struan Murray, 1 Joel MacQuene.

Paul Roos Gimnasium: 15 Chris Smith, 14 Joel Heugh, 13 Tristan Cramer, 12 Daniel du Plessis, 11 Pieter Rossouw, 10 Aidynn Cupido, 9 Calvin Nel, 8 Vernon Petersen, 7 Christo van der Merwe (captain), 6 Andrew Yoko, 5 Lohann Louw, 4 Daniel Buitendag, 3 JP Botha, 2 Jacques van Zyl, 1 HW Barnard.
    Venue: Memorial A-Field (SACS)
    Kickoff: 12:15

  • Trekkers troef Henties in Bethlehem
