Change in venue for u18 Craven Week

SA Rugby, in consultation with the local organising committee, have decided to move the 2023 Craven Week for Under-18 boys to Outeniqua Park in George.

The tournament, the second in the 2023 Youth Weeks programme, kicks off on 3 July and will run until 8 July.

It was initially scheduled to take place at Hoërskool Outeniqua in George, but the LOC informed SA Rugby that the school’s fields would not be able to handle the heavy workload due to the persistent rain that has fallen in the area in recent weeks.

As a result, the decision was taken to move the Craven Week to Outeniqua Stadium, the home ground of the SWD Eagles.

However, Hoërskool Outeniqua – who arue celebrating their centenary this year – will still host four matches on their C-Field on Saturday 8 July.

The venue for the u16 Grant Khomo Week was changed to Hoër Landbouskool Boland near Paarl recently, while the u16 and u18 Girls Weeks are still scheduled to take place at Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg.

  • The Protea netball squad for the 2023 World Cup and their schools

The Protea netball squad for the 2023 World Cup and their schools

The Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria has the biggest representation with two players in the Protea’s netball squad that will take part in the World Cup tournament that will be hosted by South Africa in Cape Town from 28 July until 6 August later this year.

The two Affies in the squad is Jeante Strydom (goal scorer) and Izette Griesel (wing attack). The school from Pretoria has a proud netball heritage and has been one of the top-performing schools at school level. Their netball programme is headed up by Maggie du Plessis, who received a Service Award in 2021 from World Netball.

Affies’  first team is also coached by a former Protea captain Amanda Mynhardt. South Africa are captained by Bongiwe Msomi at this year’s World Cup tournament which will be hosted by the International Convention Centre in the Mother City.

Msomi is a product of the Chief Luthayi High School in Durban.

Bloemfontein also boasts of some representation within the squad. Elmere van der Berg (Jim Fouche) and Fifi Nketsa (Sentraal) both completed their schooling career in the City of Roses.

Phumza Maweni (goal assist), who will play in her last World Cup, attended Kwamfundo Secondary in Khayelitsha. She however didn’t play netball in high school and only took up the sport again after leaving school.

This will be the first time that South Africa will host the World Cup which is held every four years. The inaugural tournament was hosted by England back in 1963.

South Africa is grouped with Jamaica, Wales and Sri Lanka in Group C for the tournament. The Proteas’ best performance at the World Cup is still when they were runners-up in 1995 losing against Australia (48-68) in the final.

The Proteas did bag a fourth place in the last World Cup which was hosted in Liverpool, England in 2019.

Karla Pretorius (Zwartkop) was named the Player of the Tournament after the conclusion of the World Cup in 2019. She will once again be in action for the Proteas this year. Msomi, Griesel, Maweni and Khanyisa Chawane (Ben Vorster) are the only returning members from the 2019 squad with Pretorius.

  • Kearsney failed to finish their season on a high against Hilton College

Kearsney failed to finish their season on a high against Hilton College

    PHOTO: Hannah Shirley

The curtain came down on Kearsney College’s rugby season with a clash against old foe Hilton College. Hilton showed their class as they gave away nothing in the first half, starting and ending it with a clinical display of forward power and territorial dominance.

Being 16-0 down at halftime, Kearsney had to dig deep to stage a fight back.; and with only 35 minutes remaining, fight is exactly what they did.  Following a scrum on the half-way line, an accurate backline strike sparked their revival.

Dan Eager sliced through the Hilton defence, feeding the ball to Cameron Veenstra who raced for the corner.  Desperate defence from Hilton kept Kearsney from a spectacular try. However, this was the momentum which the hosts needed.

Pressure on the ensuing Hilton lineout led to a turnover for Kearsney.  Hammering away at Hilton’s goal line, tighthead prop Anele Cele stormed over with a powerful carry for Kearsney’s opening try.  Eager slotted the conversion.

The next 15 minutes was all Kearsney, as Hilton had to repel wave after wave of attacks.  As displayed all season, the visitors’ defence held firm and, after absorbing all the pressure, they struck back with a powerful display of forward play, to take the wind out of Kearsney’s sails and the score to 23-7.

Kearsney immediately struck back with a try from the impact player off the bench, Sange Mdunyelwa.

However, a penalty from the kick-off resulted in another opportunity for Hilton’s forwards to power over, taking the game out of reach.

The final whistle came as Kearsney was again throwing everything at Hilton on their try line.

Hilton College was an excellent opponent and deserved victors, walking away with a 28-12 win.

  • Klofies hou kanse lewend met sege oor Helpies, Garsies bobaas teen Monnas

    FOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix
