  • Tygerberg, De Kuilen bust in transfer saga

Tygerberg, De Kuilen bust in transfer saga

The saga arose after Tygerberg, one of the emerging powers in Western Cape school rugby, allegedly poached WP U18 Academy No 8 Lucian Williams from De Kuilen. The decision to drop all team fixtures last weekend was forced by De Kuilen, who famously beat Rondebosch 14-13 in the last fortnight, after their unhappiness about the transfer.

‘We didn’t even know that he had left the school,’ De Kuilen sports organiser Gabri Spies told keo.co.za. ‘When he didn’t show up on Monday [after the June holidays], we were told that he was injured. We then heard the Tuesday that he’s at Tygerberg. We contacted the parents and they only sent us a letter the following Saturday that they decided to send him to Tygerberg. We also understand that a good deal was passed on to the player for him to move.

‘We were upset about the matter, and we decided to cancel the matches against them because they bought one of our best players. He spent three years at our school, where he also made the WP U16 side, and we invested a lot of money into his development.

‘This is not the first time the so-called smaller rugby schools lose their players to other schools, and it’s not the first time Tygerberg is involved. Just ask Durbanville and DF Malan.’

Tygerberg head of rugby Gavin Beresford argued it wasn’t a case of ‘stealing’ another school’s player.

‘This has just blown out of proportion,’ explains Beresford. ‘I was there when it all started. I first spoke to Lucian’s father at the WP U18 Academy capping ceremony. I was congratulating the boys’ parents when I was introduced to him. During our conversation, he spoke about Lucian having to travel train and taxi to De Kuilen, and leaving early in the morning and coming home late at night because he lives more than 20km away. He then pointed out that he only lived 5km away from Tygerberg. I asked him why travel so far, and he said it was because of a rugby bursary. So I suggested that he enroll at our school because of the transport problem, and I left it there.

‘During the school holidays, we got a call from Mr Williams and he wanted to enroll Lucian at Tygerberg. There were no deals involved. Yes, the parents can’t afford to pay our school fees, but there’s a grant learners apply for that allows them to attend school without paying fees. We don’t pay the player or his parents.

‘We’ve experienced similar situations where we lost our players to schools like Outeniqua, Paarl Boys’ and Waterkloof. We never cancelled matches because of it. Now De Kuilen decide they want to deny over 300 boys an opportunity to play because they’re not happy.’

WP head of schools rugby Theo Kleyhans believes that national rules and regulations have to be put in place to avoid such controversy.

‘This is an unfortunate matter and it’s not the first,’ Kleyhans also told this site. ‘The northern suburb schools all met up and they’re not happy about losing their top players to the other schools. There was a lot of emotion involved in this saga, and that’s why De Kuilen cancelled the matches.

‘In my opinion, Tygerberg were wrong in obtaining a player in such an unethical manner. With four league matches left, they could’ve waited until the end of the season. De Kuilen were also wrong in cancelling the matches. If you register with WP, you commit to the fixtures scheduled. The union has spoken to both schools sternly about it.

‘Tygerberg play in the same league as De Kuilen, so there’s no case of the player getting more or better opportunities at the other school. One also has to understand that the player does live nearer to Tygerberg.

‘Looking ahead, there has to be a code of conduct put in place to avoid such sagas. I suggest that the schools approach the board and ask for transfer regulations.’

  • Preview – Aliwal-Noord vs. Hangklip

    Preview – Aliwal-Noord vs. Hangklip

On Saturday it’s Hoërskool Hangklip’s turn to travel the 160 km from Queenstown to Aliwal north on the Orange River to play Hoërskool Aliwal-Noord in an FNB Classic Clash – a meeting of country cousins on pretty equal terns.

Hangklip won at the death in Aliwal North in 2010 but last year Aliwal-Noord hammered them in Queenstown. This suggests that home ground is not such an advantage.

Hangklip believe that they have a better side than the one they had last year. The present team is more united and has a better spirit. They believe that their forwards could be decisive in the winning of the match.

Aliwal-Noord have not been having a great year and believe that it could be a while still before they are back to their usual strength.

    The season’s results:

Aliwal-Noord play more towards the Bloemfontein while Hangklip, in Border, play more towards East London.

Hangklip have played seven, winning three. Aliwal-Noord have played 11, winning four. The only opponents they have in common are Volkskool of Graaff-Reinet with very different results.

    Volkskool (Graaff-Reinet) beat Aliwal-Noord 17-5
    Hangklip beat Volkskool Graaff-Reinet 26-19

That suggests the upperhand for Hangklip.

    Player experience:

Hangklip have three players back from last year’s fixture – wing Chessry Solomons and locks Morné Hartzenberg, who is a flank this year, and Armand Pieterse, who is the captain this year.

Aliwal-Noord have four back from last year’s victorious side – fullback Martin Bezuidenhout, centre Jan Adam Watkins, flyhalf Willem Venter, flank Marko Kruger and their captain Glen Pletzen, a hooker last year but an eighthman this year.

That suggests the upperhand for Aliwal-Noord.

    Player achievement:

Hangklip are in Border and have one player who went to Craven Week – scrumhalf Justin Bell.

Aliwal-Noord had two players in the Eastern Province Country Districts team at Craven Week – Nicholaas Poone, who is not in Saturday’s team, and Glen van Pletzen. They also had two players at the Academy Week – hooker Zenande Mpalisa and lock Vuyo Jam.

That suggests the upperhand for Aliwal-Noord.

    The teams:

Hangklip: 15 François Rossouw, 14 Kululekani Duna, 13 Andrich Friebe, 12 Tiaan Smuts, 11 Chessry Solomons, 10 Riaan Pretorius, 9 Justin Bell, 8 Amber Coetzee, 7 Wiehan le Roux, 6 Morné Hartzenberg, 5 CJ Dempsy, 4 Armand Pieterse (captain), 3 Dillan McCaskill, 2 Hendrik Voogt, 1 Isak Maartens.
Replacements: 16 Ryan Jonker, 17 Ruben Mattheus, 18 Stefan de Kock, 19 Darren Williams, 20 Dane Flusk, 21 Marcel Borman.

Aliwal-Noord: 15 Martin Bezuidenhout, 14 Thembelani Kojana, 13 Jan-Adam Watkins, 12 Riques Jooste, 11 Aphiwe Dinga, 10 Willem Venter, 9 Wihan Schmidt, 8 Glen van Pletzen (captain), 7 Marko Kruger, 6 Jovaan Cloete, 5 Conraad Potgieter, 4 Vuyo Jam, 3 Arno Naudé, 2 Zenande Mpalisa, 1 Shannon Jantjies.

  • Preview – Michaelhouse vs Hilton College

The Battle of Balgowan between Hilton College and Michaelhouse will always be one of those matches that will attract thousands of adherent supporters.

And for scenic splendour there is no better day out than a drive down Nottingham Road on a winter’s day to witness the spectacle on “Meadows” at House.

What makes this match even more important is that Hilton College produced a special performance on the 7th of May this year to beat their neighbours 18-14 in an absorbing match. Yet a trip up to Michaelhouse HQ is a far more daunting prospect and the chance of Hilton repeating that result one that House will be doing everything to prevent.

Neither team have had a particularly strong season this year and Hilton can draw confidence from victories over Northwood, Daniel Pienaar and the Michaelhouse win as their best achievements this season. They have also been on the receiving end of some huge defeats as soon as they have had to face stronger opposition.

The form book reads a similar tale for Michaelhouse who have shown signs of being able to compete against the top teams, but all too often they have faded badly in the second half. Their last outing against Maritzburg College was a good performance and it was only in the finals stages of the match that College ran away with the result.

Still what counts for these teams is not really how well they have done against other teams but who can claim to be the King of Balgowan by the time Saturday evening arrives.

There is no shortage of skill in both teams and House will rely heavily on their playmaker at No.10, Austin Lockington to use his boot to pin Hilton in their own half and get the backline moving. The likes of Justin Moberly and Michael Mvelase are also key to their success and one gets the feeling that they will need to get onto the scoreboard early, build a lead and avoid going to sleep at the end.

On the 7th of May, Michaelhouse looked like they were cruising to victory only to have the result snatched from under them by a never-say-die Hilton side. This is Hilton’s big strength, their fitness and their ability to play until the final whistle. Watch out for the Hilton speedster Ross Bartlett as well as the powerful centre Jonathan Hugo to exploit any weaknesses that they find in the Michaelhouse defence.

In the last 97 matches these two teams have played, Michaelhouse lead with 50 wins compared to the 40 of Hilton. The loss to Hilton in May this year ended their biggest winning streak of 7 matches and it could be that the tide has turned and Hilton repeats their 2006 feat of back to back wins.

However a win at Michaelhouse will not be easy, there will be thousands chanting “House, House, House” and if Hilton are to walk away with the spoils it will be one special effort they would have to put in. With home ground advantage the scale is tipping slightly in the favour of Michaelhouse to take this one.

  • Preview – Maritzburg College vs. Kearsney College

Maritzburg College play Kearsney College on Goldstone’s at Maritzburg College in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday.

It will be a lustrous occasion. If 27 rugby matches and 15 hockey matches were not enough it is Reunion Day at College and the place will be teeming with spirit – the great love for the old place that brings Old Boys backs and the enthusiasm of the present boys to grace the occasion with the comforting assurance to the Old Boys that the old place has lost none of its vigour and determination.

And then on top of it all the match will be broadcast live, and the broadcast of school matches in South Africa has a huge viewer ship.

The weight of history is very much with College. The two schools started playing in 1943 when Maritzburg College went down to Kearsney and won. The next year Kearsney came up to College and won, but winning for Kearsney has indeed been rare.

In theory the two teams this year are close indeed. Kearney are now 19th on the FNB Top 20, Maritzburg College 20th, but Kearsney have dropped to 19th, College risen to 20th. They could be passing each other.

Maritzburg College have played 11 matches, losing only to Paul Roos, KES and Michaelhouse. Kearsney have played 13, losing to Affies, Paul Roos, Nico Malan and Hilton. Kearsney had good wins over Queen’s and Glenwood. College had good wins over Grey PE, Hilton and Westville.

    Results against common opponents:

Paul Roos: Kearsney lost 30-20, Maritzburg College 22-21
Hilton: Kearsney lost 13-6; Maritzburg College won 24-14
Northwood: Kearsney won 49-6, Maritzburg College 43-6
DHS: Kearsney won 27-21, Maritzburg College 20-0

Kearsney have three players who were in the KwaZulu-Natal Craven Week wide in 2011 – the Du Preez brothers, Daniel and Jean-Luc, and outside centre Sandile Kubheka. They have three sons of Springboks in their side – the two De Preez and Matthew Reece-Edwards, the scrumhalf son of Hugh, a burly fullback. The Du Preez twins are both forwards, son of scrumhalf Robert.

Maritzburg College have their twins – the Kriels, Jesse at fullback and Daniel at centre, both powerful, game-changing players. Sadly Daniel is injured and will not be playing against Kearsney.

On the surface it seems that the weight of emotion and history will be on the side of Maritzburg College while Kearsney will have the weight of top players. But it could still be that the weight – and strength – of the College forwards could have the last say.

The match will be televised live on SuperSport One at 2.45pm.

    The teams:

Maritzburg College: 15 Jesse Kriel, 14 Marcel Coetzee, 13 Richard Bamber, 12 Murray Janse van Rensburg, 11 Banele Ngwenya, 10 Lukas Booysen, 9 Josh Rencken, 8 Reegan Smith (captain), 7 Cameron Christie, 6 Jacque Conradie, 5 Robert Kamhoot, 4 Everett Pieterse, 3 Mvelo Khumalo, 2 Vuyo Khathide, 1 Alex Cahill.
Replacements: 16 Banele Mhlong, 17 Jonathan Grobler, 18 Seko Buthelezi, 19 James Smith, 20 Kelvin Elder, 21 Gareth Orr, 22 Cyle Muil.

    Coaches: Ryan Strudwick, Steve Botha

Kearsney College: 15 Joshua Devine, 14 Dean Seals, 13 Sandile Kubheka, 12 Tyler Smith, 11 Isolethu Ngidi, 10 Tristan Tedder, 9 Matthew Reece-Edwards, 8 Ayron Schramm, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Jarred Hayes-Hill, 5 Daniel du Preez, 4 Jayson Hirshovitz, 3 Mthunzi Moloi, 2 Roy Meaker, 1 Jono Deighton (captain).

  • Preview – Florida vs. Marais Viljoen

On Saturday Hoërskool Florida meet Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in an FNB Classic Clash at Hoërskool Florida.

It should be a fairly even game as both schools have had erratic seasons which make any prediction hazardous.

Florida have played 10 matches, winning six. Their most notable victories are those over Eldoraigne and Monnas, whom they usually beat however strong the Krugersdorp school is and this year it’s not as strong as usual. Marais Viljoen of Alberton has played eight, winning five. Its most noteworthy win was over Transvalia. They have just two opponents in common.

    Against common opponents:
Parktown: Florida won 34-11, Marais Viljoen 26-17
Monument: Florida won 28-25; Marais Viljoen lost 24-8

Florida has two players in it side who played for the 2011 Golden Lions Craven Week side – scrumhalf Eric Botes, flyhalf C-Than Moos, who was at fullback at times, and wing Tshepo Mooki. That suggests that Florida should have the upper hand in the match.

    The teams:

Florida: 15 Steven du Plessis, 14 Tshepo Mooki, 13 PJ Rheeders, 12 Bouke Gouws (vice-captain), 11 Ché Stevens, 10 C-Than Moos, 9 Eric Botes, 8 Jodé Mostert (captain), 7 Phillip van Vuuren, 6 Sabello Dlamini, 5 Jacques du Preez, 4 Gerbrand O’Kelly, 3 Kyle Kruger, 2 Waldo Esterhuizen, 1 Clinton Theron.
Replacements: 16 Pieter Williamson, 17 Joseph Dweba, 18 Morné Strydom, 19 Brandan Rieck, 20 Erwin Harris, 21 Armand Goosen, 22 Jaco Barnard.

Kearsney2018

NewsGWelkomGimThe final match of the day at Kearsney, between Noord-Kaap and Welkom Gimnasium, was full of movement and greater continuity than the two previous matches, adding to the enjoyment of the spectators.

Noord-Kaap were attacking when an error enabled Welkom to move the ball from the in-goal area. Two passes out to the right found wing Apla de Kock, who made 60m down the right touchline before passing inside. Left wing Marno April needed a 30m sprint to score under the poles for the try of the day. The conversion by FC du Plessis was successful for the Eastern Free State visitors to lead 7-0.

They continued to out-muscle and out-pace Noord-Kaap and another midfield mistake by Noord-Kaap was picked up by lock Husayn Banzi who drove his way 50m to the try-line, handing off three attempted tackles. Another successful two points by Du Plessis put them 14-0 in front.

Noord-Kaap managed to get on the scoreboard with a long-range penalty by Seanriq Daniels. This was followed immediately by a try after a 50m run by right wing De Kock for his second and a 21-3 lead going into the break.

There was no let up by Welkom in the second half and they continued to dominate. A missed attempted clearance by a Noord-Kaap kick was spread left across the field finding April who evaded two tackles and side-stepped his way past the final defence to score. Again, the conversion successful, to put them 28-3 ahead.

Noord-Kaap had their most successful period of the game going into the last quarter when they spent 10 minutes in the Welkom 22m area. However, good defence by Welkom kept them at bay.

Thereafter both sides were unable to add to the 28-3 score; and so ended a successful first day at the festival

    Scorers:

NewsGDurbanHSThe penultimate match of the first day saw the breeze strengthening, clouds coming in and a welcome drop in the temperature. Durban High School (DHS) and Selborne College from East London met in a dual of thrusts and parries.

It took sometime before the first points were scored, with DHS wing Malusi Ntuli converting a penalty. Selborne flyhalf Thomas Bursey replied a few minutes later and the score remained 3-all until DHS scored a try just into the second quarter. A cross-kick to the left saw two DHS players almost gather the ball, but the favourable bounce ensured centre Darren Booysen first to the ball for a try.

DHS, with an 8-3 lead, then increased it to 11-3 when Ntuli added his second penalty just before the break.

Ten minutes into the second half DHS front row forward Marcel Nel went over following a ruck. Again, the conversion went wide but the lead had increased to 13 points.

Selborne at last managed passes without mistakes, to send centre Likhaya Tengimfene over in the corner. This brought Selborne to 8-16 but they were playing with greater intent.

They camped in the DHS half for 10 minutes but were unable to make it count. Just three minutes from the end, Selborne prop forward Jacques Goosen barged, over but an easy conversion was missed.

DHS held on for a 16-13 lead in an exciting finish with Selborne striving for a win.

    Scorers:

Durban High School 16 (11) – Tries: Darren Booysen, Marcel Nel. Penalties: Malusi Ntuli (2). Selborne College 13 (3) – Tries: Likhaya Tengimfene, J Goosen. Penalty: Thomas Bursey.

NewsGFramesbyTwo Eastern Cape schools Dale College and Hoerskool Framesby faced each other in the fourth game of the 11th Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

An almost score-less first half, where neither school gained dominance, had most of the rugby being played between the two 22m areas.

When Framesby looked as if they were gaining some dominance in possession, it was Dale with a kick ahead on the halftime whistle that led to the first points. Fullback Emile Matsinya chased, getting his hand on the ball before the Framesby defence for the try and a 5-0 lead at halftime.

The game livened up in the second half when Framesby scored twice in the third quarter. The first was by forward Rikus Smith after a ruck, and the second by wing Luan Ras after inter-passing between Ras and Sebastian Brand as they ran 50m down the left touch line, beating the defence with good passing.

Framesby scored their third try from a maul following a lineout after a long kick downfield which found touch just in front of the corner flag. Flank De Wet Erasmus came up with the ball after the rolling maul. The conversion was again wide but their lead had increased to 15-5 which remained as such to the end.

    Scorers:

Framesby 15 (5) – Tries: Jonathan Draai, Rikus Smith, De Wet Erasmus. Dale College 5 (0) – Try: Emile Matsinya.

NewsGGlenwoodThe third match was expected to be closely contested between Glenwood and HTS Drostdy, two of the highest ranked sides at the festival. It did not disappoint with play moving from one end to the other.

Although the half-time score was 19-7 it could easily have been closer as Drostdy had their chances, but good Glenwood defence prevented them scoring more than a single try in the first half.

Glenwood opened the scoring when Drostdy, with the ball in hand, made a mistake and it was capitalised on by centre Conan le Fleur, the Glenwood SA schools’ player, who ran 20m to score. Their second SA schools’ player, Jayden Hendrinkse, added the extra points for a 7-0 lead.

Fullback Joe Jonas completed a good handling movement when he dived over in the corner for a 12-0 lead. Drostdy had also looked dangerous with the ball in hand but mistakes cost them dearly.

A little stab through resulted in a Drostdy line-out 5m out. The ensuing maul was controlled well by Drostdy and their eighth man CJ van Rensburg fell on the ball for a five-pointer. Cohen Jasper converted to leave the score 7-12.

Just on half-time Hendrikse forced his way over and, with his conversion successful, took Glenwood into halftime with a 19-7 lead.

Drostdy were the first to score in the second half after a successful box kick was gathered by wing Adrian Maans who showed good pace down the touchline to dot down in the corner, thereby narrowing the gap to 12-19.

Glenwood were not finished winning good ball from a ruck and it was spread to the left. Good inter-passing down the left flank ended in Hendrickse’s hands. He cut inside to score under the poles, giving himself an easy conversion and extend the lead to 26-12.

Going into the last quarter, Glenwood were awarded another penalty at a ruck which Hendrikse converted. Drostdy again had chances but poor passing and handling prevented them getting over the line until six minutes from the end; where they did get their movement with a five-pointer, converted by Jasper, to narrow the lead to 10 points.

A good long pass to Jasper on the right end in a consolation converted try in the final seconds of the game, leaving the score 29-26 in a fine game of top schoolboy rugby.

    Scorers:

Glenwood 29 (19) – Tries: Jaden Hendrikse (2), Joe Jonas, Conan le Fleur. Conversions: Hendrikse (3). Penalty: Hendrikse. HTS Drostdy 26 (7) – Tries: CJ van Rensburg (2), Cohen Jasper, Adriaan Maans. Conversions: Jasper (3).

NewsGQueensCollegeWith temperatures rising, spectators were already heading for the shade by the second game. The match between Queen’s College and Pretoria Boys High never rose to the heights of the first match. The sides were evenly matched and mistakes on attack by both sides resulted in try-scoring opportunities going a-begging.

Minutes after the kick-off Pretoria were awarded a penalty which Justin Cross converted for an early 3-0 lead.

Midway through the first half, Pretoria sustained pressure by the forwards, and the ball was moved through a number of hands to hooker Richard da Costa. This time there was no mishandling, enabling Boys High to take an 8-0 lead which they held until the half-time break.

A break-away by Queen’s centre Siya Tyulu handed the ball to flyhalf Sinethemab Tshunu. There was good support by centre Enrique Oranje who received the pass, before he dived over in the corner.

Queen’s maintained their resurgence and another good handling movement resulted in Tyulu diving over in the right-hand corner to give them a 10-8 lead.

With five minutes remaining, Boys High were awarded a penalty over 40m out and Cross was able to put his team into a one-point lead.

Two minutes later a mistake in the defence by Queen’s led to another penalty just in front of the posts. Cross had an easy kick to increase the lead to 14-10.

    Scorers:

Pretoria Boys’ High 14 (8) – Try: Richard da Costa. Penalties: Justin Cross (3). Queen’s College 10 (0) – Tries: Enrique Oranje, Siya Tyulu.

NewsGMarkPretoriusKearsney College, who traditionally play the opening game of their festival, and visitors HTS Middelburg ran on to the Stott field in ideal conditions for this opening match.

After a jittery start, Kearsney gradually gained the ascendancy with both possession and field position. It took 15 minutes before the first score, after the hosts had crossed the line earlier, but the referee ruled the ball had been held up.

The first try was scored by fullback Jacques Odendaal when he received a short pass from flank Sibusiso Sangweni who had made the break. Taine Muirhead added the two points for a 7-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, after forward pressure in the Middelburg 22m area, a ruck on the try-line was won by Kearsney and the ball slipped over to Odendaal who dived over for his second try and a 12-0 lead.

After two missed penalty conversions, Muirhead added three points on the stroke of half-time for a 15-point lead.

Early in the second half, again after forward possession in the 22m area, hooker Reid Stuart barged over for Kearsney’s third try.

The Middelburg forwards began asserting some pressure, resulting in their first try, when wing Quintino October went over. A conversion by Morne Sonnekus narrowed the deficit to 7-20.

A quick tap from a penalty caught Kearsney off guard and the ball was passed through a number of hands to October who jinxed his way through passing to Lenard Olivier who outpaced the defence.

Eighth man Juandre Odendaal crashed over for their third try, sprinting 30m to score near the touchline. A good conversion by Sonnekus narrowed the gap to just four points.

Kearsney appeared to tire as Middelburg got a second wind and, in the final minutes, a handling mistake by Kearsney was pounced on by Middelburg centre Mariano de Villiers who ran 40m to score. Although the conversion went wide, they had won the game 26-25 in a game of two halves.

    Scorers:

HTS Middelburg 26 (0) – Tries: Quinton October, Lenard Olivier, Mariano de Villiers, Juandre Odendaal. Conversions: Morne Sonnekus (3). Kearsney College 25 (15) – Tries: Jacques Odendaal (2), Taine Muirhead, Mark Pretorius, Reid Stuart. Conversion: Muirhead. Penalty: Muirhead.

Sharks gives four bursaries at the Kearsney College Easter Festival

    KearsneyCollege20181

NewsKERFBursariesA highly successful 11th Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival wrapped up today (Monday) with three teams ending the festival unbeaten and the announcement of four players who each received bursaries to the Sharks Academy for 2019.

Two local teams, Durban High School and Glenwood, as well as Hoerskool Framesby from Port Elizabeth, were unbeaten at the festival.

Glenwood was presented the floating trophy for having played the most attractive rugby at the festival.

Valued at over R100 000 each, the bursary recipients are Glenwood flank Lindokuthle Luthuli, HTS Drostdy centre Christie Grobbelaar and two Kearsney players, flank Sibusiso Sangweni and fullback Jacques Odendaal. The bursary includes a contract with the Academy next year, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.

Announcing the awards, Sharks Academy managing director Etienne Fynn said spectators had been treated to some outstanding rugby over the weekend, with many evenly matched teams which made for exciting games.

“The results from DHS were a great surprise, with the team remaining unbeaten against three traditional Eastern Cape powerhouses,” Fynn said.

It was good to see so many returning schools to the Kearsney festival, which was the ultimate compliment and a measure of what the festival offered schoolboy rugby in South Africa, he said.

DHS beat Selborne College from East London 16-13, Queen’s College from Queenstown 24-7 and Dale College 39-0. Glenwood’s victories were against DHS Drostdy (29-26), Dale College (39-0) and Welkom Gimnasium (24-10). The third unbeaten team, Hoerskool Framesby beat Dale College 5-15, Pretoria Boys High 13-10 and Hoerskool Noord-Kaap 30-8.

In a cracker final game of the festival, Kearsney dominated the match against Pretoria Boys High. With a half-time 19-7 score in the hosts’ favour, they won 40-33 after Pretoria scored a converted try after full-time.

Despite Saturday’s misty, wet conditions, the festival was well supported on the three play days and spectators were able to enjoy a high standard of competitive rugby. It was a successful event for organisers Kearsney College and sponsors Standard Bank, Halfway Ford, Hendok and the Sharks Academy.
