Westville Boys’ High School laid claim to the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Second Term, Coastal A-League title on Friday after defeating Hillcrest High School in a penalty shootout.

It was Westville’s first league title since 2022 after Glenwood High captured back-to-back crowns in 2023 and 2024.

In a hard-fought, tight contest, Westville and Hillcrest completed regulation play goalless.

The Griffin, though, captured a nail-biting victory from the penalty spot by four goals to three with their goalkeeper, Indi Mti stealing the show by pulling off some critical saves in the shootout.

The round robin season of the Coastal A-League was the most thrilling and captivating of the six KZNHSFA leagues, generating excitement at both ends of the standings.

When it came to the final round of matches, the top four all had a shot at making the final, with Westville facing Glenwood, the team that had beaten them in the 2024 final, and Hillcrest High up against Port Shepstone High.

After two tense stalemates, Westville finished top of the table and Hillcrest placed second, which secured the school a place in the Coastal A-League title game for the first time.

As first-timers in the final, Hillcrest High entered the match as the underdog, carrying the hope of upsetting a seasoned Westville side. Unfortunately for Hillcrest, they didn’t quite accomplish their dream. Yet their season was one for the books and one that generated huge optimism.

With the final ending goalless, it focused more attention on the Dayyan Fudu, who was unable to take his place in the title-deciding contest.

The Westville marksman finished as the leading goal scorer in the Coastal A-league, with his nine goals setting a league record and playing a massive role in Westville lifting the title.

Day one of the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament, organised by African Grassroots Hoops, delivered captivating action on the courts of the German International School, in Cape Town, on Saturday.

The popular tournament is a highlight of the developmental basketball calendar and attracts both local teams and sides from beyond the borders of the Western Cape.

On Saturday, the Soweto Basketball Academy, Montana Vikings, and Bulldogs, caught the eye.

    Male Competition

The Soweto Basketball Academy, after being beaten in the final of the Soweto Basketball Uprising Tournament by Jozi Stars on Monday, returned to winning ways with successive victories on the opening day of the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament.

They’re top of Group A, with the maximum four points after a 49-22 win over the Titans Basketball Club, which they followed with an equally convincing 50-22 defeat of the Cape Town Sharks.

The Sharks, though, had no problems dealing with the Hout Bay Hurricanes, cruising to a one-sided 48-5 win. They’ll face the Titans in their final group game, with a win guaranteeing them a place in the semi-finals, and they look odds-on to advance to the final four.

It was a tough day for the Titans, who lost both their games. After their defeat to the Soweto Basketball Academy, they were edged out by Hout Bay, going down 22-25.

The Montana Vikings, who made the semi-finals of the Soweto Basketball Uprising Tournament, before falling to the Soweto Basketball Academy, picked up two wins in Group B.

In their opening match, they were pushed hard by Eagles Basketball Club A but came away with a 33-25 victory. The Eagles showed in the loss, though, that they are formidable contenders.

Their second match brought an even tighter win for the Montana Vikings, who held off Snipers Hout Bay to take a 32-30 win.

After day one, Eagles Basketball Club A, with three points, is in second place, just one point behind the Montana Vikings. They scored an impressive and hard-fought 65-62 victory over the Lions Basketball Club in their other outing on Saturday.

The Lions Basketball Club, in third, also has three points after they grabbed a one-point win over Snipers Hout Bay, triumphing 43-42 in a tense match.

In Group C, the Bulldogs made a resounding statement, not only to the teams in their group but also to every other team participating in the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament by posting a clean record while dominating their opposition.

The first team to suffer a defeat against the Bulldogs was Blouberg, who were beaten 43-22. The Westcliff Eagles were handed a 65-26 loss, and Eagles Basketball Club B became the third team to go down, with the Bulldogs powering their way to a 44-26 victory.

In other Group C fixtures, the Westcliff Eagles claimed a tight 33-28 victory over Eagles Basketball Club B. They made it two from three, then, with a 52-43 victory over Blouberg.

    Female Competition

The women’s tournament features six teams, split into Group A and Group B.

On Saturday, the defending champions, Hotshots Basketball Club, along with the recent back-to-back champions of the Soweto Uprising Basketball Tournament, the Soweto Basketball Academy, were on song, as was the Montana Vikings.

Leading in Group A, the Hot Shots Basketball Club squeaked by Shaq Squad, winning 18-16, before letting loose against Hout Bay United and running away to a 38-11 win, which ensured their progress to the semi-finals.

In Group B, despite travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town through the early hours of Saturday morning, the Soweto Basketball Academy showed no signs of jet lag, as evidenced by their commanding 46-16 win against the local Langa Kings in their opening match of the tournament.

Also in Group B, the Montana Vikings rumbled to a 37-17 victory over the Langa Kings.

All set for the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament

Social media sites have been abuzz with posts about the fifth Youth Classic Basketball Tournament, organised by African Grassroot Hoops.

Scheduled for Saturday, 21 June and Sunday, 22 June, the two-day event will showcase the finest talent from Cape Town and beyond.

Basketball powerhouses, including the Montana Vikings and Soweto Basketball Academy, who were both in action at the Soweto Uprising Basketball Tournament earlier this week, will take to the court at the German International School, in Cape Town.

The tournament, for u19 boys’ and girls’ teams, has unearthed some of the country’s most promising young basketball talents, including Lutho Tukayi, who played a crucial role to help the Spartans claim the prestigious title in 2024.

Tukayi, a 17-year-old, is now enrolled at Maritzburg College, one of the leading basketball-playing schools in the country. There he is benefitting from the mentorship of one of the nation’s leading coaches, Suwi Siwila.

Tukayi was previously coached by South African basketball icon Vincent Ntunja, who served on the coaching staff of the Minnesota Timberwolves during the NBA Summer League in 2023. Previously an outstanding player, way back in 1998, Ntunja was honoured as the Most Valuable Player at the Michael Jordan Flight School.

Every year, the African Grassroot Hoops Tournament recognises an individual for their contributions to basketball. This year, Belinda Dyck will be honoured and celebrated for her ongoing involvement in the sport, particularly in the Western Cape.

Ntunja, the tournament director and a brand ambassador for Puma, expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors who have contributed to making the event a reality. For the first time in the tournament’s history, Puma will provide all the teams with playing kits.

Too Much Wifi is helping to promoting basketball within different communities, while DMKS Africa, an international nonprofit organisation dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders, is a backer of youth activities and has also thrown its weight behind the tournament.

Digital Express is assisting with printing services. Additionally, the City of Cape Town and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports are involved.

Yuri Arcus Productions will contribute by providing photography services and food for the players. Peninsula Beverages will supply drinks, and Things on Wheels will also assist in feeding the competitors.

On Tuesday, Curro The Blyde Primary School was crowned the champion of the Football Association Pretoria Primary Schools (FAPPS) Challenge Cup following a 2-1 victory against Bronkhorstspruit Primary at Crawford International School in Pretoria.

In an exhilarating u11 football match on Tuesday afternoon, Curro The Blyde Primary School mounted a comeback to secure a 2–1 victory against Bronkhorstspruit Primary School.

The game, held at Crawford International School and commencing at 14:00, was overseen by the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools (PMSS) coaching team, with coach Qiniso Thembani Mohlakwana from the PMSS coaching staff playing a crucial role.

Coach Maisha Raphela, who originally led the team to the finals, was unable to attend the final match – however, the team was in capable hands with coach Mohlakwana stepping in to guide them to the gold championship. Curro The Blyde is one of the schools participating in the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools programme.

Bronkhorstspruit Primary took the lead early in the match, putting Curro The Blyde under pressure. Curro responded with assurance and resolve. Lukhotho Zwelinjani from Curro The Blyde equalised with a composed finish, leveling the score at 1–1.

Capitalising on this momentum, Kitso Molusi scored the decisive goal for Curro The Blyde, shifting the momentum and establishing the lead. The team then maintained their position with disciplined defending, preventing Bronkhorstspruit from scoring a second goal.

Both teams delivered an energetic performance, however, it was Curro The Blyde’s determination and collaboration that proved decisive. This victory reflects the team’s development under the guidance of the PMSS coaches and indicates a promising future for the young squad.

After the win, coach Mohlakwana spoke to SuperSport Schools Plus regarding his position at PMSS and expressed gratitude to Curro The Blyde for their faith in PMSS initiatives following the victory.

“I’m a coach dealing with Physical Education and extracurricular activities at PMSS,” he said.

Mohlakwana stated that coaching is a challenging profession and not suited for everyone. This implies that one can gain insights from various individuals, including coaches, or attempt to emulate the actions of their role models. However, without a genuine passion and affection for the role, it becomes difficult to endure, particularly when coaching at the youth development stage.

“I have gained a lot of experience in a short space of time dealing with kids at PMSS who are five to 13 years and it’s not easy but in order for the kids to develop properly ,you need to give it all,” he told SuperSport Schools Plus.

Coach Mohlakwana praised FAPPS for its contribution to youth football, noting that it has provided numerous children with the chance to engage in sports (soccer). They acquire skills to perform under pressure and understand the significance of striving for something that ultimately brings them joy.

“These kids are at the age where they are still developing even their life skills. They can socialise with others, start making friends, and understand teamwork. These are the most important things I’m always looking for from these kids, and today they have shown me growth,” he said with excitement.

After the victory, coach Mohlakwana shared that the young children were shedding tears of joy following the game. He also mentioned that this is their first trophy for the u11 Boys.

“When it comes to me and emotions, I put them aside and make sure these kids don’t see how I feel because I’m always there to make them happy and protect them in many ways.”

In conclusion, he praised the PMSS for their commendable efforts, as all of this is occurring due to their belief in youth development and in young coaches, for which he mentioned that they express their gratitude to PMSS.

Wandile Magebula, the Sports Coordinator at Curro The Blyde, expressed special gratitude towards Monique Daneel, the Executive Head of Curro The Blyde, for her role in facilitating the initiative to join the FAPPS League, which aims to foster the talents of young learners.

After four days of competitive basketball, the Jozi Stars were crowned the boys’ champions of the Soweto Basketball Uprising Tournament, on Monday, while the Soweto Basketball Academy claimed the girls’ title.

The Jozi Stars maintained an unbeaten streak throughout the tournament, putting together a clean record in their pool matches before advancing through the playoffs to the final, after a 68-48 win over Wolves in the semi-finals.

The final, against the Soweto Basketball Academy, was a captivating contest, which went down to the wire, with the Jozi Stars capturing a nail-biting 53-51 win to lay claim to the silverware.

Played on Youth Day, in Soweto, the finals honoured the country’s youth who played a significant role in overturning apartheid, with the Soweto Uprising, in 1976, being one of the pivotal moments in that battle.

It was a tough end to the tournament for the hosts, the Soweto Basketball Academy, who had enjoyed an impressive run, going undefeated in their pool games, before winning through to the final.

In the semifinals, they took down last year’s champions, the Montana Vikings, recording a convincing 67-53 win in a rematch of the 2024 title game.

Unfortunately for the home team, for the second year in succession, they had to settle for second.

While the Soweto Basketball Academy boys’ team was stopped at the final hurdle, there was much to celebrate for the girls’ team, which emphatically defeated Alexandra Basketball Club 59-38 to go back-to-back as the champions of the Soweto Uprising Tournament.

Before they met for the title, the hosts handed Wolves a 58-26 loss in the semi-finals, while the Alexandra Basketball Club cruised to a 62-34 win over Rand Tutorial.

After the finals had concluded, the Soweto Basketball Academy honoured Charles Saunders and George Makena, presenting them with Lifetime Achievement Awards, which recognised their exceptional contributions to South African basketball.

“Their legacy has paved the way for many. We honour and appreciate their dedication and contributions,” the Soweto Basketball Academy said in a statement.

JVW and Highlands Park back to winning ways in GWDL

After experiencing setbacks last week, both JVW and Highlands Park returned to winning ways in the Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) on Sunday.

Last week, on 8 June, JVW suffered an unexpected 0-2 loss to Hellenic Falcons. That defeat dropped JVW to fifth place in the league standings, while the Falcons drew strength from their upset victory.

On Sunday, JVW rebounded, romping to a commanding 6-1 victory over Dinoko Rondebult.

With three points in the bag, JVW has 21 points from their 10 outings, although they remain in fifth place.

The gap between JVW and the two teams at the top of the table is considerable, though, with the league leaders, SAFA Academy, on 33 points, three points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.

JVW was not the only team to rediscover its rhythm on Sunday. Highlands Park, who were trounced 14-0 by SAFA Academy the previous weekend, got back to winning ways, and they did it in style, showing some of the form that had them challenging at the upper end of the standings for a long time.

Up against Edenvale FC, Highlands Park had their shooting boots on, rolling to a 7-2 win.

SAFA Academy continued their impressive form, cruising to a one-sided 7-0 defeat of Hellenic Falcons. Clearly, they, together with Mamelodi Sundowns, are the team to beat.

SAFA Academy’s record is perfect thus far, with victories in all of their matches, including over Sundowns, who have taken the league honours the past two seasons.

While some games delivered plenty of goals, there were none between the University of Pretoria (Tuks) and Kenneth FC, while Kempton Park FC scored a 2-0 win over Sporting CP.

On Sunday, Panorama FC picked up three points by defeating Refilwe FC 5-0.

Mamelodi Sundowns were, once again unstoppable, scoring 14 times for the second weekend in succession in a lopsided win over Tornado Academy Ladies.

Sundowns owns the edge in goal difference over SAFA Academy, but they remain in second place. It’s a two-horse race for the league honours.

The Bulls claimed a tight 68-62 win over the Eagles, while the Elite Basketball Academy ran out 31-19 winners over the Hotshots Basketball Club.

The Jozi Stars, one of the more captivating teams at the tournament, brought an element of glitz and glamour to Pool D. Not only did they top their group, but they did it in style, finishing the group stage with a clean record.

Rand Tutorial gave Jozi Stars a good game, but went down by 10 points, 28-38.

The Jenny Wu Sports Academy (JWSA) dominated the Equestria Giants, keeping their opponents scoreless in a 20-0 win.

Girls’ Competition: Pool Stages and Quarterfinals

The Wolves, who were initially placed in the same pool as Soweto Basketball Academy A, advanced to the semifinals after a tough 36-31 win over Young Warriors.

Alex enjoyed an easy 36-9 win over Norkem Park, while Rand Tutorial cruised to a 27-2 victory over Soweto Basketball Academy B.

    Boys Quarterfinals

In the boys’ quarterfinals, last year’s finalist, the Montana Vikings, and the Soweto Basketball Academy, won to book their places in Monday’s semifinals.

The Soweto Basketball Academy picked up a 45-29 win over the Sandton Bulls in the quarterfinals, while the Montana Vikings reached the final four with a 47-34 win over JWSA.

Joining them in the semifinals were the Wolves, who ended the Elite Basketball Academy’s journey, winning 57-37, and the Jozi Stars, who comfortably dispatched Phoenix, scoring a 60-38 victory.

In Pool A of the boys’ competition, the host team, Soweto Basketball Academy, continues to lead with four points after securing victories in their first two games of the tournament.

They’ve demonstrated exceptional basketball skills on the court and are undoubtedly a strong contender, although day two of the tournament has revealed several other teams, including the Montana Vikings from Cape Town, who captured the spotlight in Pool B.

On Saturday, the Soweto Basketball Academy claimed another victory, defeating Wolves, 40-31.

In second place in Pool A is the Young Warriors, who won one and lost one on Saturday. They went down to Wolves, losing 36-41, but rebounded in their second game with a 38-15 win over Norkem Park.

The Soweto Basketball Academy tops Pool A, with the maximum four points from two wins, while Young Warriors are a point adrift. Wolves, in third place, also have three points. Norkem Park has been eliminated from title contention after losing their first two matches.

On Sunday, Norkem Park takes on Wolves in their final group match, hoping to grab a consolation win. Wolves, meanwhile, will be focused on securing a place in knockout stage of the tournament.

    Pool B

The Montana Vikings, from the Mother City, are showcasing their cool demeanour, positive energy, and competitive spirit in Pool B, and are an intriguing team. On Saturday, they bagged two wins.

The Orlando Basketball team was the first to fall to the Montana Vikings, with the Capetonians cruising to a 41-11 victory. They followed up that 30-point win with a 46-28 victory over Phoenix.

In other Pool B matches, Orlando rebounded with a win against The Glen High School, coming through with a narrow 36-31 victory in a closely contested game.

It was a challenging day for The Glen. They were also beaten by Phoenix, going down 25-35.

Those back-to-back losses mean The Glen is out of the running for the championship.

The Montana Viking, though, will be out to complete their Pool B assignments with a flawless record on Sunday.

    Pool C

Only three games were contested in Pool C on Saturday.

After going two for two, the Elite Basketball Academy (EBA) leads the group with four points. They opened their challenge on Friday with a tight 50-47 win over the Eagles. It was tight again on Saturday, but they defeated the Sandton Bulls 46-42.

After suffering a defeat in their opening match on Friday, the Eagles returned revitalised on Saturday to take down the Hotshots Basketball Club, from Cape Town, by a 41-31 margin.

Hotshots were also beaten by the Sandton Bulls, who recorded a 31-21 win.

The Jozi Stars continue to demonstrate their championship ambitions and illustrate why they pose a significant threat to their competitors in the Soweto Basketball Uprising Tournament with a strong showing in Pool D.

On Friday, they held off Jenny Wu Sports Academy (JWSA), coming out 58-53 winners after an intense clash.

On Saturday, they further asserted their dominance by defeating the Equestria Giants 42-20.

In the aftermath of their loss on Friday, JWSA rebounded with a 29-23 victory against Rand Tutorial on Saturday.

Rand Tutorial, after that setback, posted a victory over the Equestria Giants in their second outing, winning 53-42.

    Girls’ Competition

    Pool A

In the same vein as the boys’ team of the hosts, the Soweto Basketball Academy A girls’ team has been soaring high. They bear the weight of championship aspirations.

After securing a second consecutive victory on Saturday, 31-21 over Rand Tutorial, they’re atop Pool A.

Beaten by the Soweto Basketball Academy, Rand Tutorial rebounded with a 26-18 victory against Wolves. Wolves, in turn, returned with a win, taking down Norkem Park 44-23.

In Pool B of the girls’ competition, the Soweto Basketball Academy B team has lost both of their matches.

Their first defeat was against the Young Warriors, who powered their way to a comfortable 34-7 win. It didn’t get any better for the home side in their second game, which the Alexandra Basketball Club (Alex) won 40-4.

Alex added another victory in their second match, outplaying The Glen 32-9.

It’ll come down to a Sunday showdown between Alex and the Young Warriors for the top spot in the group.

The finals of the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Second Term, Inland B and C-Leagues took place on Friday, with ML Sultan and Michaelhouse both securing titles.

The final of the Inland B-League, between ML Sultan and Northbury Park, mirrored their previous game. In the earlier round-robin league match, Northbury Park surprised ML Sultan, who had won six out of six until then, winning 3-2.

In the final, with promotion to the A-League awaiting the winner, the stakes were high and the margin for error was minimal.

ML Sultan got back to winning ways, reversing their loss to Northbury Park by claiming a tight 1-0 victory to be crowned the KZN Inland B-League champion, thanks to a goal from Mtolo Samkelo.

The champions had more reasons to celebrate. Their Thabiso Madlala and Vuyani Mkhize shared the golden boot, finishing as the joint=top goal scorers in the B-League, with five each.

ML Sultan’s title-winning success came despite the school facing a number of significant challenges. In May, Sanele Ngcobo, the team’s coach, told SuperSport Schools Plus that the school lacks the advantage of a full-sized soccer field and currently uses a seven-a-side pitch.

Still, ML Sultan found a way to win and next season they’ll join teams like Maritzburg College, Carter High, Edendale Technical High, and Linpark in the A-League.

Daniel Haswell, the Chairperson of the KZNHSFA, commended coach Ngcobo for his exceptional efforts in organising the ML Sultan football team, with support from the KZNHSFA, which helped them acquire a sponsored team kit from Primo.

In 2025, Edendale Technical High made a smooth transition from the B-League to the A-League, finishing in third place. ML Sultan will take lessons from the journey of Edendale when they, too, contest the A-League in 2026.

    Inland C League

In the final of the Inland C-League, Michaelhouse defeated Umvuzo 2-1.

Although Umvuzo entered this match as the slight favourites, having tallied 16 points in an impressive campaign, which was double the eight points earned by second-placed Michaelhouse in the regular phase of the season.

However, the title game did not reflect that advantage, as Michaelhouse won to move to up to the KZN Inland B-League in 2026.

They may have lost, but Umvuzo’s Nkosingiphile Zuma was the leading goal scorer in the Inland C-League.

Soweto Basketball Academy sets the standard at Uprising Tournament

The annual Soweto Basketball Uprising Tournament, an u18 basketball event organised by the Soweto Basketball Academy (SBA), got underway on Friday, with the hosts setting the tone on the first day.

The tournament, which runs through until Monday, kicked into action with four matches.

The boys’ and girls’ teams from SBA immediately showed the benefit of their home advantage on the court at Morris Isaacson High School. in Jabavu, Soweto.

In their opening match, SBA’s boys’ team dominated Norkem Park High School, rocketing to an 89-15 win, which served as a strong statement of their intention to go all the way.

The SBA girls’ team, the winners of the AISJ Basketball Tournament and the u18 girls’ Old Petrians Basketball Tournament at the end of February this year, also faced Norkem Park in their Pool A opener in the only girls’ game of the day. They, too, won comfortably, posting a 50-20 victory

In Friday’s other games, Jozi Stars scored a 58-52 win over Jenny Wu Sports Academy (JWSA), while there were only three points in it in Elite Basketball Academy‘s (EBA) hard-fought 50-47 victory over Eagles.

The action and the excitement will ramp up on Saturday, with the first tip-off at 08:00 and the last games starting at 16:00.
