  • JVW Diamond Cup defending champions through to next stage

Friday’s action in the JVW Diamond Cup at the UJ AW Muller Stadium showcased competitive and exciting football, with Edenvale High School, the reigning champions, successfully progressing to the next stage of the tournament.

They faced tough competition from Roosevelt High, Germiston High, and Ashton International College (Benoni) in Group C, which proved to be very competitive.

Roosevelt shone, but Edenvale managed to scrape a 1-0 win when they met. Daniel Pratten and Jordan Van Der Linde, the co-coaches of Edenvale High School, and the architects of the school’s successful programme, said the match, against a team that had already won two games, was tough.

Van der Linde commented: “We came looking to secure a first position in our pool, so we knew that we had to go all out and perform. We saw that they [Roosevelt] had done well, so it was always going to be a tough game…but our girls worked really hard, and we are proud of them.”

Pratten weighed in: From our coaching perspective, we’ve had to manage some internal battles here and there with the ladies. We picked a larger squad than we used to in the past based on depth. This year, we have a lot of depth in our squad. Maybe we don’t have superstars or standout players, but the team is what we are focussing on the most and the girls have done well.”

    Mental preparation

Tournament football is a mental battle, Van der Linde added: “We’ve both been in a position like this before, playing a tournament and coming back as the defending champions. Our girls have to be in the right space, mentally. We started our preparations in June for this tournament, and we have also been lucky that a lot of girls at Edenvale are interested and want to play football, making our job much easier.”

“The most important thing is that we play for our school. We have the same goal as our girls, and the girls are playing for each other on the field, with trust in one another, and they have the same goal and that is to play for the jersey,” Pratten said.

    Depth and versatility

Reflecting on the hard-fought win over Roosevelt High, Van der Linde said Edenvale made a tactical adjustment to help the players manage their fatigue. With that in mind, the players have trained to play in three or four different positions, so as to better manage the workload.

Pratten said this approach is applied from u15 level. By the time players reach the first team level, they are versatile and dynamic.

    Highlight

Last year, Tanna Hollis, who now plays for the JVW first team, was a star performer for Edenvale.

“She was responsible for scoring all of our goals in the final match, making her the pivotal element of our team,” Van der Linde said. “This year, however, we have made a significant change. We no longer rely on a single standout player. Each member of the current team contributes uniquely to the game, working collaboratively so that responsibility is shared rather than relying on one individual.”

Pratten said the coaches work with the girls’ strengths to make the best of the talent that they have.

Both coaches expressed pride the achievements of Hollis, who was the leading goal scorer in last year’s JVW Diamond Cup. Van der Linde said: “I coached her when she was about 10 to 12 at JVW. We have always been her staunchest supporters.

“She continues to attend our events, including today, which is beneficial not only for her but also for the other girls who can look up to her. We must acknowledge JVW defender Taylor Berkovic, as well, for her unwavering support.”

  • GWDL coming to your screens this Sunday: Don’t miss out!

The Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) will be streamed live this Sunday, 11 August, on the SuperSport Schools app and online

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) is set to host round 16 of the u16 GWDL at President Park in Vereeniging.

With seven weeks remaining in the season, Mamelodi Sundowns enjoys a seven-point advantage at the top of the table, with an exemplary record of 15 wins from 15 matches.

Under the leadership of coach Rhoda Mulaudzi, the team has excelled offensively, averaging almost five goals per game, while smoothly transitioning from defence to attack.

A key strength lies in their midfield partnership of Zihle Mkhize and Moothosamy Amara, while their defence has been miserly, giving up only one goal per five matches played.

The Brazilians, the defending champions, have once again established themselves as the team to beat in the GWDL. On Sunday, though, they will face their toughest opposition.

Second placed Sundowns takes on JVW and a tightly contested clash is expected. In their previous encounter, ‘Downs scored near the end of the game to snatch a narrow 1-0 win.

Afterwards, coach Mulaudzi remarked: “Every time we face JVW, its a war.” Expectations for the clash at President Park are elevated. It’s a battle of one versus two and a win for JVW would pull them to within four points of the pacesetters.

Looking at it from a different point of view, JVW is only three points, or one win, ahead of third placed Tuks, while RESA is just four points off the second placed side.

There is likely to be some movement in the standings because Tuks and RESA will also face one another on Sunday.

They’ve both won 11 of their 15 games. Tuks has lost only twice all season long and RESA three times. They’ve performed consistently well, although there have been a small number of disappointments, where they have dropped points.

At the opposite end of the standings, the bottom club, Edenvale FC, is set to take on Refilwe FC, the club which is just above them in the standings. Six points separate the two.

Two weeks ago, Edenvale clinched their first victory of the season, scoring a 2-1 win over Kempton Park. They’ll be eager to emulate that performance to close the gap on Refilwe.

  • Primo Big 10 champs out, defending champs advance in Cowie Cup

In a third meeting between Glenwood and Maritzburg College within the past two weeks, College scored a comfortable victory.
In a third meeting between Glenwood and Maritzburg College within the past two weeks, College scored a comfortable victory.

In a highly anticipated first round meeting, Maritzburg College faced off against Glenwood High School in the Cowie Cup.

It’s been an outstanding season for the Green Machine, who won the KZN High Schools Football Association’s 2nd term title and recently captured the Primo Big 10 for a first time. On their way to the Primo Big 10 title, they also twice beat Maritzburg College 2-1, the first time in pool play and the second time in the semi-finals, coming from behind to win on both occasions.

Glenwood had the advantage of playing at home in their Cowie Cup showdown, but it was College who won the game, scoring a decisive 3-0 victory in Durban.

The Red, Black and White‘s reward is a second-round match against Kloof High School, who were forced into a penalty shootout with Bechet Secondary after the team’s finished regulation time at 1-1. Kloof then won it 5-4 from the spot.

The reigning champions of the Cowie Cup, Port Shepstone High School, progressed to the second round of the easy way, with a walk-over versus their opponent, Crawford La Lucia.

Port Shepstone, who will face Redwood in the second round, captured the 2023 title with a tightly contested 2-1 win over Carter High School.

That victory showed off Sheppies’ character as they rallied to record a come-from-behind victory. After conceding a goal within the first ten minutes of the match, Langa Mtshali brought the south coast side level. Then, man of the match, Sisanda Malishe, delivered a pinpoint cross from a corner, which Thamsanqa Njakazi turned into a goal with a stunning header to seal the win.

In an eye-catching result, Westville Boys’ High overran Durban High School (DHS), winning 7-2.

  • UJ hosts the 2nd edition of the JVW Diamond Cup

The Diamond Cup, which was launched by the JVW Girls Schools League last year, takes place for a second time this coming weekend, 9 and 10 August, at the University of Johannesburg.

Thirty-two teams will compete for glory. One of the teams to keep an eye on is Curro Meridian Cosmo City, who be chasing a second title of the season after their victory in the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools Festival in June.

The school is part of the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools‘ programme, which provides top coaches who work to enhance the skills of players from the age of seven. Curro Meridian Cosmo City is in Group G of the JVW Diamond Cup, where they will face tough competition from Hillview, Parktown High School for Girls, and Mondeor High School.

Edenvale High School won the inaugural edition of the Diamond Cup in 2023 at Waterstone College, defeating Steyn City High School in the final. Their group opponents include Germiston High School, Roosevelt High School, and Ashton International College (Benoni).

Steyn City High School has been included in Group E, along with Norkem Park High School, Krugersdorp High School, and Reddam House Helderfontein.

The inaugural JVW Diamond Cup was inspired by the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup, and it featured top talents like Amukelani Masonganyi, from John Orr Engineering School of Specialisation (SOS), who competes in the Gauteng Sasol League for Springs Home Sweepers, under the guidance of Joseph Mkhonza, the former coach of Banyana Banyana, who led South Africa women’s national team to its first Olympic Games appearance in 2012.

Another standout was Munashe Mugwara, from Steyn City High School, who was named the Player of the Tournament, while Tanna Hollis, of Edenvale High School, a prolific striker for JVW, was the event’s top goal scorer. Recently, Hollis was the joint-top goal scorer in the Gauteng Engen Cup.

St Catherine’s School claimed the Diamond Cup Plate in 2023. After finishing top of their group, they advanced to the Elite Eight where they scored a win over the eventual runners-up, Steyn City High School.

Then, in the Plate Tournament, St Catherine’s secured victories against Pretoria High School for Girls in the final four and Hoërskool F.H Odendaal in the final. F. H Odendaal, the runners-up, also topped their group, and progressed to the round of 16, whether they took on Pinnacle College Founders Hill, before a showdown with Edenvale High School in the Elite Eight.

Third place in last year’s event went to John Orr Engineering School of Specialisation.

  • Maritzburg College, Carter High dominate Pietermaritzburg squads

Matches between Maritzburg College and Carter High School have become must-see clashes.
Matches between Maritzburg College and Carter High School have become must-see clashes.

The KZN High Schools Football Association Inter-District tournament, featuring u16 and u19 teams, takes place at Thomas More College, in Kloof, on 4 August. A week later, on 11 August, it will be the turn of the u14 and u15 sides.

Recently, the Pietermaritzburg trials to choose the squads that will represent the district were held. Out of the 64 boys who cracked the nod, 31 were from Maritzburg College, while Carter High School, the champion of the KZN High Schools Football Inland 2nd Term League, was also strongly represented.

Maritzburg College’s strength in depth and across the four age groups was reflected in the selections and reflected well, too, on the school’s strong structure and football programme.

Nic Haswell, the Director of Soccer at Maritzburg College, expressed immense pride in the school’s ongoing success and progression. “Of course, I am extremely proud of our players and coaches and the selections reflect the passion and hard work we put into our football programme,” he said.

Luzuko Ndiko, the coach of Carter High School, who is also the coach of the Pietermaritzburg u19 squad for the inter-district tournament, said there is significant depth in the lineup, with a handful of boys who have represented the district together from u14 to u19 level being bolstered by talented new players, who have further strengthened the team.

The lineup includes Carter High’s impressive captain Nthuthuko Mnguni, who has been joined by some of his teammates, as well as top performers from Maritzburg College, ML Sultan Secondary School, Riverwood, Alexandra High School, and Heritage Academy.

“We choose the best amongst the players, from the top schools from around Pietermaritzburg, so we do have quite strong depth”, Ndiko said.

Commenting on his own charges, Ndiko said: “Four players from Carter High School have made the cut – Amukelwa Khuzwayo, Nthuthuko Mnguni, Lumka Nzimande, and Ntakaso Dlamini -which is 25 percent of the u19 squad, which quite a good number, especially since it represents the fact that we are the champions, the best team in Pietermaritzburg.

“Yes, we lost out friendly match on 20 July against Maritzburg College, but that doesn’t change the fact that we beat College twice this year, and we are still the reigning champions.”

Ndiko said this was testament to the effectiveness of the coaching staff and the dedication of the players at Carter High School. Playing against strong opposition has also helped his teams improve, Ndiko added, which is a source of pride for the school. This past weekend, they were crowned the champions of the inaugural Carter High Super Cup.

“I think some of the reasons for our success is the fact that we had an extensive pre-season. We started our first training session with the first team in January, when the school opened. Now they are in form, fitness is not an issue, and combinations are sorted by the coaches as they’ve had an extensive period to look at players and combinations.”

Ndiko further lauded the coaching staff for its significant contributions to the football programme. He specifically mentioned the outstanding work of Mduduzi Ngubane, the head coach at the school, Samkelo Zondo who is their conditioning coach, Lindokuhle Ntuli, the goalkeeper coach, and the dedication and passion of Soccer Manager, Andise Maphumulo. “He’s been an absolute superstar. He’s managed our soccer programme for years at our school, and now we see the fruits of that continuity,” Ndiko declared.

The school’s sponsors, particularly the Ilawu Hospitality Group, had contributed greatly to Carter’s success, he added.

“It is evident that the collective efforts of the coaching staff, and external stakeholders have played a crucial role in the success of the team,” he said.

“We extend our gratitude to Principal Ash Ramgoolam for his full support and strong leadership, as well as a special acknowledgement to Deputy Principal Mrs. Debbie Nel for her dedication to championing our students”, he concluded.

  • Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam celebrate 20 years of Kay Motsepe Schools Championship

Dr Precious Motsepe-Moloi, David Mufamadi of Benny’s Care Sports Academy, Hlompho Kekana and SA Football Association President Dr Danny Jordaan at the launch of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship.

The Motsepe Foundation, in partnership with Sanlam, is entering its 20th year of partnership as the backers of the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship and the massive event continues to grow.

The competition is the biggest of its kind in South Africa with over 11 000 schools participating annually and prize money totalling R11 750 000.

Speaking at the launch of Kay Motsepe Schools Championship at Sanlam’s offices in Sandton this week, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the co-founder of the Motsepe Foundation, said: “When we started, we never saw that it would grow to this level, where more than 11 000 schools would be participating in football, and more and more schools want to be a part of it.”

Moloi-Motsepe said that when the event began the plan was to bring sport to schools and also bring down the level of poverty in the country.

“We did sport at the grassroots level because we realised that a lot of young people do not have opportunities,” she explained.

Moloi-Motsepe said there is a lot of talent in South Africa, but there are relatively few opportunities created for rural communities, villages, and townships.

“We partnered with the Department of Education, and we now have partnerships with Sanlam, as well, and we not only look at prize money for these young people, but we also do things like provide playing kits, transport and food.”

Some high-profile talents have been discovered by the Kay Motsepe Schools Championship, including Percy Tau, a three-time winner of the CAF Champions League – once with Mamelodi Sundowns and twice with Egypt’s Al Ahly.

His former team-mate and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Hlompo Kekana, participated in the very first Kay Motsepe Schools Championship and he was at the launch to show his support. During a decade representing Sundowns, he won six Premier League titles, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup.

Kekana highlighted the obstacles faced by young boys and girls in townships and rural areas and emphasised the importance of the opportunities created for those children by the event.

He also encouraged other major corporations to increase their investments in schools’ competitions, highlighting the importance of nurturing young talent and providing children with positive outlets.

TV presenter Andile Ncube who served as the host of the launch, was joined in conversation by former Spar Proteas’ netball player, Tshina Mudau, who shared her insights on sport and its impact on the individual and on communal growth.

Sanlam CEO Bongani Madikiza commented: “At Sanlam, our purpose is to empower communities to be financially confident, secure and prosperous.

“Furthermore, we believe in the transformative power of sport. Our partnership with the Motsepe Foundation on these initiatives is testament to our commitment to making a positive impact by helping the youth to develop the necessary skills to set them up for success once they leave the sports field for good.

“Sports, arts, and cultural activities are profound socio-economic catalysts that bring people together and inspire our young people to dream and imagine a bigger life for themselves.”

Dr Patrice Motsepe weighed in: “We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our partners and stakeholders who share our vision of empowering the youth and transforming lives through these initiatives.

“Together, we are not only shaping the athletes and musicians of tomorrow, but we are also cultivating leaders who will drive positive change in their communities.”

Carter High School's strong season received a big boost on Saturday when they won the inaugural Carter High Super Cup on their home ground.
Carter High School’s strong season received a big boost on Saturday when they won the inaugural Carter High Super Cup on their home ground.

Carter High School, the champions of the 2nd Term Inland League of the KZN High Schools Football Association for 2024, hosted the first-ever Carter High Soccer Super Cup tournament on Saturday in Pietermaritzburg, bringing together eight schools from the city and its surrounds.

Competition was keen, but Carter, one of the pre-tournament favourites, secured the u19 title, although they were pushed to the limit by Edendale Technical High School.

The final went to a penalty shootout after Carter and Edendale had shared a 1-1 draw in the gold medal match. The home side then won 4-2 from the spot.

Despite their loss in the final, it was an impressive outing from Edendale Technical High. The team, which was a newcomer to the KZNHSFA this season, sparkled in the second term competition and, once again, was up for the challenge on Saturday.

Without a doubt, Edendale Technical possesses one of the strongest football programmes in KZN. Their girls’ football team, led by coach Ntombifuthi Khumalo and team manager Sihle Basi, has twice represented South Africa in the CAF African Schools Championship Finals.

Both teams advanced to the Super Cup final in emphatic fashion as they both kept clean sheets in the semi-finals. Carter posted a 3-0 victory over ML Sultan, while Edendale cruised past Heritage, recording a 4-0 win. Their clash for the title proved to be a fitting final.

Nthuthuko Mnguni, the captain of Carter, was named the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performances and exceptional leadership, which proved pivotal for his team as they secured their second piece of silverware of the season.

They’ll have their sights set on the forthcoming Pietermaritzburg and Midlands FA Cup where a win would complete an outstanding treble. Last season, Carter went down 2-3 to Maritzburg College in a spectacular FA Cup final.

    RESULTS

    Semi-finals

    Carter High 3-0 ML Sultan
    Edendale Technical 4-0 Heritage

Carter High School (4) 1-1 (2) Edendale Technical

  • Glenwood are double champions after Primo Big 10 win

Glenwood’s players reach for the Primo Big 10 trophy after they won the title with a hard-fought victory over DHS.

Glenwood High School, after claiming the KZN High Schools Football Association Coastal 2nd Term League title for a second year in succession, made it a double on Sunday at Hilton College by capturing the Primo Big 10 honours.

It was a case of third time lucky for the Green Machine, who had twice before been beaten in the final.

This time, with a hard-nosed, refuse-to-buckle effort, they won, beating Durban High School (DHS) 1-0 in the title-decider, thanks to a superb finish on the counterattack from Ukwazi Dludla.

Relive the Primo Big 10 action on SuperSport Schools

Glenwood demonstrated grit and a hard-working team ethic on their way to the silverware, and they did it the hard way.

Their challenge began in Group B with a rematch of the 2023 final against Maritzburg College. The Red, Black and White struck first in that match, but Glenwood clawed their way back into the contest and eventually won it 2-1.

Job done? Not quite. A 0-1 setback against Clifton College left the Green Machine on the back foot. They needed a win against DHS in a cross-pool game to ensure their passage to the quarterfinals. They got it, winning 2-0.

Then, in the quarterfinals, they went a goal down to Northwood after Owami Maduna curled a brilliant shot across the goalkeeper and into the far corner. Alakhe Mdluli found a reply, however, and Glenwood went on to scrape a 5-4 win from the penalty spot.

DHS, meanwhile, took on Clifton in the quarterfinals. Their Durban neighbours caused the Horseflies one or two scares, but DHS came away with a 2-0 win in the end.

DHS overcame Clifton 2-0 in the quarterfinals to book a semifinal duel with Michaelhouse.
DHS overcame Clifton 2-0 in the quarterfinals to book a semifinal duel with Michaelhouse.

Michaelhouse got the better of Hilton in a battle of traditional rivals in the last eight, with a sensational rasping drive into the goalkeeper’s bottom right-hand corner from Jason Brufau proving to be a deserving winner.

In an eagerly anticipated showdown, Westville Boys’ High and Maritzburg College battled it out in the last of the quarterfinal contests.

The Griffin were first onto the scoreboard, with Bayanda Dlamini striking from close range.

Ace predator Mazithi Qasha levelled for College after pouncing on a defensive error and Nzolo Ngcemu then won it with a headed goal back across the ‘keeper.

Before the semi-finals, ninth and tenth places were up for grabs, with Kearsney College facing St Charles.

Kearsney came close to scoring with this shot, which passed just wide of the goalkeeper's left-hand post, but their match against St Charles ended goalless.
Kearsney came close to scoring with this shot, which passed just wide of the goalkeeper’s left-hand post, but their match against St Charles ended goalless.

They played to a goalless draw and, with the matches running slightly behind schedule, they chose not to go to the spot to decide the outcome.

Glenwood had done it the hard way to reach the semis, and that tough route to the final continued when they had to face Maritzburg College again.

Once more, College scored first, and once more Glenwood came back from a goal down to win 2-1.

DHS and Michaelhouse, meanwhile, shared a 1-1 draw, which sent the match to the penalty spot, from which School claimed a 3-2 victory.

In the final, a contest that simmered and threatened to boil over at times, Glenwood coach Khaya Ngwengwe urged his players to keep calm, keep working hard. They would score on the counter, he said. He was proved right when Dludla bagged the winner in the second half.

The man of the match award went to Glenwood’s Sibonelo Phewa, who is also a regular star performer in their 1st XI cricket side.

Alakhe Mdluli shone for Glenwood, displaying silky skills on the ball and a keen eye for goal.

There was a four-way tie for the Primo Big 10’s top goal scorer, with Mazithi Qasha (Maritzburg College), Tino Hove (Hilton College), Alakhe Mdluli and Ukwazi Dludla (both Glenwood), scoring three goals each.

  • Casey Gordon promoted to JVW first team

JVW Girls Football Development (JVW) has promoted Casey Gordon, the goalkeeper for the JVW Sasol (Sapphires) team, to the JVW first team, which competes in the Hollywoodbets Super League, the premier division of women’s football in South Africa.

JVW made the announcement on the club’s social media platforms on Saturday, 27 July, just before their match with Lindelani Ladies in the Hollywoodbets Super League

Gordon joined the squad for JVW’s 2-0 victory, which was achieved thanks to a double from the talented Tanna Hollis, who was the joint top goal scorer in the Gauteng Engen Cup Tournament in 2024 alongside Gugu Mabitsela of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Gordon’s promotion was welcomed by football fans, who have been eagerly following the impressive progress of the exciting young net-minder.

Just 17 years old, Gordon will join Banyana Banyana‘s Kaylin Swart, JVW’s primary goalkeeper, for the rest of the season.

This season, the teenager distinguished herself by being named the 2024 Engen Sports Goalkeeper of the Tournament. It was a third year in succession that she had received the accolade.

Gordon’s fearless and athletic goalkeeping has already brought her national caps for the South African u17 and u20 teams. Her status as one of the top goalkeepers in development football in South Africa is unquestioned.

Maritzburg College captain Mateo Horstead raises the Primo Big 10 trophy after College beat Glenwood for the title in July 2023.

Hilton College hosts the Primo Big 10 on Saturday, 27 July, and Sunday, 28 July, with 10 of KZN’s top football-playing schools in action.

Maritzburg College, who won Primo Big 10 last year, will have a serious challenge on their hands in their title defence. Coach Chemon Petersen’s team is also chasing a first title of the 2024 football season.

In early May, they finished in the top six of the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament after falling to the eventual champions, Clapham High School, in the quarterfinals. That high finish, though, secured College a place in next year’s Absa Wildeklawer tournament.

More recently, they went down to their Pietermaritzburg rivals, Carter High School, in the final of the KZN High Schools Football Association’s Inland 2nd Term League, with Nthuthuko Mnguni’s goal securing the silverware for Carter for a first time since 2014.

In 2023, in an exceptional season, College claimed three titles. That side was led by the outstanding midfielder Mateo Horstead, who excelled both in attack and defence.

College still boasts plenty of talent. Mazithi Qasha is prolific in front of goal and able to strike with either foot. Zipho Makangela is a rock in defence, and CJ Sukraj, in goal, is a formidable final barrier for opposing attackers.

The Red, Black and White has been drawn in a challenging Group B, alongside Glenwood High and Clifton College.

Glenwood was their opposition in last year’s final and, at the end of May, the Durban school also won the KZN High Schools Football Association’s Coastal League title for a second season in succession. They’re tough.

Clifton was somewhat inconsistent at the Kearsney Soccer Tournament two weeks ago, but they bagged a couple of notable victories, defeating the eventual runners-up Siyajabula 2-1, and thumping TuksSport High School 4-0.

Group A features Hilton College, St Charles College, and Durban High School (DHS), while Group C is four-strong and includes Northwood School, Kearsney College, Westville Boys’ High School, and Michaelhouse.

    Tournament Format

The 10 teams are placed in three groups: two groups of three teams each and one group of four teams. The teams in the groups of three will play cross-group games for their 3rd group match and that match will count for points.

Teams have been placed in the groups according to who they were fixtured against in the main schedule and in the cross-group matches. The schedulers have tried to provide matches between teams that were not scheduled to play one other.

The top two teams in each group and the two best third-placed teams will qualify for the quarterfinals. The remaining two teams will play off for the ninth and 10th places.
