Erica Park, in Belhar, hosted the opening and group games, followed by a series of knockout matches. Historically, the Athlone Stadium, in Cape Town, has been the site for the final and closing ceremony of the BPC.

In 2024, when Cape Town Spurs defeated FN Rangers 4-1 in the final, a record crowd of 9 800 spectators was in attendance, highlighting the event’s status as one of the most cherished and followed youth competitions in the nation.

2024 winners, Spurs, will be in action in the Pat Connolly Mid Section on Monday against Randburg, who narrowly missed out on the title in 2025, losing 0-2 to Ubuntu Football Academy in the final, where Henry Ihebe netted both goals to secure the championship for Ubuntu.

On Sunday, Spurs edged out Stars of Africa Academy 1-0, while Randburg displayed a more aggressive approach, winning 3-0 against Eagle Performance Academy (EPA).

In the Plate section semifinals, Rygersdal secured a 1-0 win over the Virginia Sports Academy, while Hout Bay advanced 3-0 from the penalty spot after playing to a goalless draw with Stanturf United.

It’s Mamelodi Sundowns versus Antalyaspor for the Cup. Although Bafana Ba Style will be favoured by most to go all the way, due to their pedigree and reputation, they will face a highly motivated Antalyaspor, who have risen to the challenge time after time to book their place in the title game.

In the semifinals, Antalyaspor eliminated Stellenbosch 5-4 on penalties after a challenging 1-1 draw in regulation time. Sundowns won decisively against Everton, advancing with a 3-0 victory.

The final kicks off at 15:00 at the Athlone Stadium.

  • Royal Bafokeng Sports and La Liga team up to build future football stars

Royal Bafokeng Sports and La Liga team up to build future football stars

Royal Bafokeng Sports (RBS), representing the Royal Bafokeng Nation, has formed an exciting partnership with LaLiga to establish the Royal Bafokeng Sports LaLiga Academy. Its goal is to provide world-class football development in South Africa.

RBS has built a strong reputation in sports development in the North West in athletics, netball, football and basketball, especially.

It hosts the exciting annual RBS Junior NBA/WNBA Finals in Rustenburg, which, in 2024, was attended by five-time NBA champion Ron Harper.

One of the products of those events is Reatlegile Taukobong, who now plays for the Soweto Basketball Academy and signed with Western Texas College earlier this year.

Hailing from Rustenburg, she played for Kitsong School, which excelled in the Royal Bafokeng Jr. NBA/WNBA League. She has also captained South Africa’s junior national basketball team, and will jet off to the USA in autumn 2026.

The football partnership between RBS and La Liga reflects the commitment of RBS to developing youth football, both nationally and across the continent. It also merges LaLiga’s internationally acclaimed training methodology with RBS’s enduring dedication to utilising sport as a catalyst for community development.

In a joint press statement, RBS and LaLiga said: “The initiative supports the Royal Bafokeng Nation’s Vision 2035 (Plan 35), which prioritises investment in sports programmes and resources to empower local communities.”

In early 2025, RBS, in collaboration with LaLiga, selected eight young South African footballers, four boys and four girls, to travel to Madrid for a training camp as part of the Next Gen Draft Project. The initiative is a global talent development programme launched by LaLiga and EA Sports FC, which is aimed at discovering and nurturing young players from around the world.

The players selected from South Africa included Masilo Goitseone, Malatso Orateng, Tebogo Montshing, Olerato Ramafi, Boitshepo Mfaladi, Kgatsliso Raseloma, Mamonyana Mpondo, and Dineo Potso.

Trésor Penku, the Managing Director of LaLiga Africa, said: “This launch reflects a shared commitment between LaLiga and the Royal Bafokeng Nation to the responsible and sustainable development of youth football in Africa.

“By combining our methodology with RBS’s infrastructure and long-term vision, we are creating a high-performance environment that will nurture talent and contribute meaningfully to the South African football ecosystem.”

The RBS and LaLiga Academy will be located at The Sports Campus Marang – a facility providing a cutting-edge environment that adheres to elite international standards – within the Royal Marang Hotel, in Phokeng.

The complex features six natural grass pitches, two artificial turf pitches, a 7v7 pitch, and a High Performance Centre, creating an ideal environment for both training and competitive events.

Initially, the academy will host around 100 players distributed across five divisions – u14, u15, u17, u19, and a senior team. That structure will provide a well-defined pathway that integrates high-performance training, competitive engagement, and academic support.

Players will participate in community, regional, and elite competitions. They will be supported by sophisticated performance analysis technology, which is aimed at fostering individual growth.

Emile Smith, the Acting Managing Director of Royal Bafokeng Sports, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration: “This partnership with LaLiga represents a major milestone in the Royal Bafokeng Nation’s journey to develop young football talent.

“Together, we are creating opportunities for aspiring athletes through world-class coaching, mentorship, and access to exceptional facilities. This academy will not only elevate player development but also inspire a deeper passion for football within our communities.”

The collaboration leverages La Liga’s vast global presence. In the past 10 years, it has executed over 900 international sports initiatives in more than 60 nations.

Several La Liga clubs have academies, elite development programmes, and foundations in South Africa. Espanyol created the first official La Liga club academy in Johannesburg in 2022, with Michael Bender serving as its CEO. The Real Madrid Foundation has, meanwhile, initiated an academy in collaboration with Generation Schools in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Juan Florit, Head of Football Projects at LaLiga, commented: “Through collaborations such as this, we are able to share the knowledge and expertise of Spanish football while adapting it to local contexts.

“Together with the Royal Bafokeng Nation, we aim to identify and develop regional talent and create long-term value for the game,” he concluded.

Dayyan Fudu scores his first goal for Durban City

Dayyan Fudu made his debut for Durban City on 21 March in a match against Siwelele. A week later, he netted his first goal in the DStv Diski Challenge. Photo: Dayyan Fudu on Instagram.

The prolific striker from Westville Boys’ High, Dayyan Fudu, is regarded as one of the most promising football talents in South Africa, and he again showed why on Saturday.

Representing Durban City in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), he slotted his first goal for the club in a 5-1 victory over Stellenbosch at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

Fudu made his debut earlier this month on Human Rights Day, 21 March, when The Citizens defeated Siwelele 3-1. Although he did not score in that match, it marked another huge milestone for the exciting prospect.

During the 2025 schools’ football season, he was undoubtedly one of the top players in both the KwaZulu-Natal coastal and inland regions of the Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA).

In the KZN Coastal A-League, he led Westville to a league championship, finishing as the competition’s top goal scorer with nine. Unfortunately, he missed the final, against Hillcrest High, due to illness, which prevented him from potentially reaching double figures.

However, he concluded the season with the league title and the Golden Boot Award.

Action in the KZNHSFA gets underway in April, and Fudu, who is in grade 12, will be eager to make his mark. The first order of duty will be Westville’s defence of the Coastal League title. They’ll face stiff competition from the likes of Glenwood, Port Shepstone High, Northwood, and last year’s runners-up, Hillcrest High, which boasted a youthful squad last season and will be intent on seizing the title from Fudu’s Griffins.

An abundance of football also awaits, with several tournaments on the horizon, and those events offer further opportunities for Fudu to showcase his excellence against teams from all across the country.

Dayyan Fudu visited Spain in 2025, where he participated in a trial with the Levante UD Academy. Photo: Supplied.

Last year, his impressive performances and unwavering determination during the Kloof High National Football Tournament, one of the most challenging school football tournaments in the country, were outstanding.

Despite Westville underperforming, Fudu was the event’s top goal scorer, slotting 11 times, which made him an easy pick for the Team of the Tournament at Kloof High.

His exceptional talents led him to Spain later in the year for an assessment and trial with the Levante UD Academy, where he made a lasting impression.

A return visit is anticipated, with further evaluations pending, Junero Mdlongwa informed SuperSport Schools Plus last year. Mdlongwa’s NeroNoLimit Football Agency, which represents Fudu, helps young African footballers to secure trials in Spain.

With his goal for Durban City against Stellenbosch, who were the winners of the DDC in 2023/24, the promising striker proved he is ready to continue his outstanding goal-scoring record, even at the highest level of youth development.

The DDC serves as the reserve league for the Premier Soccer League/Betway Premiership. It offers Fudu an opportunity to challenge himself with a prestigious club and a stage to make his case for further advancement of his football career.

  • Breaking down the GDL by the numbers: goals and assists

Breaking down the GDL by the numbers: goals and assists

Three weeks into the 2026 Gauteng Development League (GDL) season, the statistics are impressive, with 75 goals already recorded in the u19 division.

Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools

Siwelele, the former SuperSport United, is currently atop the division, with three wins and nine points after an impressive start to their campaign.

Any uncertainties that may have surrounded Siwelele have been quickly dispelled. Still, a long journey awaits them, with the 2026 champions set to be crowned in November.

The title-holders, Mamelodi Sundowns, are in third place after suffering a defeat in week two, when they lost 0-1 against Randburg, for whom Junior Mutunga scored the only goal of the match.

Last season’s runner-up, Highlands Park, who won the title in 2023 and 2024, have made a poor start and, surprisingly, prop up the table after three matches. They’ve scored only once while conceding six times.

In the past, the Lions of the North have made slow starts before building powerful momentum, which carried them to the title. But none of those starts have been as rough as the first three matches of their 2026 campaign. Although the sample size is small, there are valid concerns about the regular title contenders.

Sfiso Mnguni, the coach of Highlands Park, told SuperSport Schools Plus last year, shortly after narrowly losing out on the title, that he intended to promote younger players to the u19 division. That could explain the club’s sluggish start. Mnguni’s squad has an opportunity to reverse their fortunes this coming weekend when they take on the Prestige Football Development Academy.

Prestige has also made a stuttering start, losing two and drawing one match, while Highlands Park has no points after three defeats. For both sides, their weekend clash offers a chance to bag a first win and an opportunity to get in on the goal-scoring action.

    Sharp Shooters after three weeks

This season, Bafana Ba Style and Kaizer Chiefs lead the goal-scoring tallies with eight goals each. Both have demonstrated strong attacking depth. Sundowns’ Tebogo Moreri is the team’s top scorer, with his performances highlighted by a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Rockefvs.

Moreri is not the sole player to have scored a hat-trick this season. Msimango, from Chiefs, also scored three times in a 6-2 win over Randburg last weekend. Moreri and Msimango are being chased by RESA’s Bandile Sithole, who scored a brace against Panorama.

While goal scorers tend to capture the spotlight, they need others to put them in a position to score. Sivuziwe Lonzi, from Sundowns, provided a pair in his side’s 5-0 win over Rockefs. His teammate, Kgaogelo Monanyane, also has two assists so far, while Thando Singo and Junior Masoeu have contributed one each.

Despite being the GDL’s leading scorers, both Chiefs and Sundowns have already lost a game each in the first three matches of the season. The log leaders, Siwelele, have scored seven times and conceded only twice.

They’ve enjoyed contributions from different players. including Siyabonga Msimango, and Lebohang Mobe. They were both on the scoresheet in Siwelele’s season-opening 2-0 win over Jomo Cosmos.

The Pretoria club’s standout players thus far include Lwande Yende, who scored against Wits Junior. Mobe and Msimango also bagged their second goals in Siwelele’s 3-2 win over the Johannesburg club. Onthathile Lemao laid on two of those goals, while Unathi Achusi set up the other.

In week four of the GDL, Kaizer Chiefs face a tough challenge on Sunday from the unbeaten Kathorus Hyper Academy, who dropped points in their first match, a draw against Prestige. They’ve added two wins since then.

Siwelele will be focused on extending their lead at the top. They tackle the Africa School of Excellence, which has recorded one win, one loss, and one draw in three outings. Siwelele heads into the clash favoured to score a fourth victory in succession.

On Saturday, ‘Downs, tackle Jomo Cosmos. EzeNkosi, who are in 10th place, also have one win, one loss, and one draw from three matches.

  • Khaya Mngwengwe takes over as Chairperson of KZNHSFA

Khaya Mngwengwe takes over as Chairperson of KZNHSFA

    Khaya Mngwengwe. Photo. Glenwood High

The Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) season kicks off in mid-April, with Khaya Mngwengwe succeeding Daniel Haswell, who has been instrumental in the development of KZN schools’ football, as the Chairperson of the Association.

Mngwengwe also serves as the Director of Soccer at Glenwood High, where he has played a pivotal role in nurturing the talented Green Machine, guiding them to the Coastal A-League title in both 2023 and 2024.

Those achievements highlight his commitment to KZN football, as does his earning the CAF B Coaching License in 2024.

In an exclusive interview with SuperSport Schools Plus, Mngwengwe said his passion for football began in eMolweni, where he played the game daily, like many of the local boys. He attended Forest View Primary School and represented KZN in cricket and rugby in grade seven.

His athletic skills earned him a scholarship to Westville Boys’ High, where he excelled in cricket, rugby, and football, representing KZN in all three. After graduating, he continued his football career with Rangers and Durban Stars.

His dedication to young talent led him to coaching, starting with a Sports Learnership at Westville Boys’ High in 2011, which was followed by two years at the Sharks Academy.

He then spent over five years as a development coach at AmaZulu, working closely with schools, including Glenwood.

Mngwengwe told SuperSport Schools Plus about AmaZulu’s partnership with Ohlange High School (founded in 1901) and Glenwood (1910), both of which are recognised for their academic excellence. The partnership has, he said, produced rich fruit.

“Having these partnerships allowed AmaZulu to attract boys from outside Durban. Boys were able to get the best of both worlds – an outstanding education system and the best practice from professional football coaches and advocates,” he explained.

He said those partnerships established a healthy environment, which led to both schools qualifying for the national Kay Motsepe Soccer Schools Championship.

While at AmaZulu, Mngwengwe worked closely with Glenwood, guiding them to qualification for the u14 McDonald’s National Tournament and the u15 Coca-Cola Tournament.

When AmaZulu won the DDC Rewired competition during the 2020/21 season – a unique temporary competition created to replace the 2020/21 DStv Diski Challenge due to the Covid-19 Pandemic – a key component of that team were boys from Glenwood and Ohlange High, which showcased the success of their collaboration.

Mngwengwe said winning the DDC Rewired competition reflected the football culture of the schools and AmaZulu’s legacy in uplifting KZN through the club’s commitment to providing top education and football for the boys.

“The club worked hard to get the right people in to work with these kids, such as Thabiso Makhetha, who coached the squad at Glenwood. Now, he is at FC Nomme in Estonia. Darian Wilken is at Raja Casablanca, and Russel Thompson is now the Youth Technical Director at AmaZulu.

You had a young group of coaches who were hungry and were given a chance by Lunga Sokhela, [a prominent South African football Administrator, best known as the General Manager of AmaZulu],” Mngwengwe said.

He said Sokhela understood that he had to invest in development, and that meant developing coaches as well. “He had a vision, and it worked,” he said.

Glenwood Old Boy, Langelihle Phili, who currently plays for Stellenbosch FC, celebrates scoring a goal against Kaizer Chiefs during a 2-1 victory for Stellenbosch at the FNB Stadium in February. Photo: Stellenbosch on Facebook.

Some of the players who turned professional included Msindisi Ndlovu (Marumo Gallants) and Siphesihle Maduna (TS Galaxy), both of whom attended Ohlange High, while Glenwood’s pros included Langelihle Phili (Stellenbosch), Onke Ncama (AmaZulu), and Ntokozo Nzama (Richards Bay).

Mngwengwe noted that many boys are in first-division teams and some are enrolled in universities. Uyanda Makhoba, who is pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town, is among those who have benefitted from the programme.

In 2023, Mngwengwe became Glenwood’s first team coach and was also appointed the school’s Director of Soccer. He also served as the Convenor of Selectors on the KZNHSFA Football Committee.

At the 2025 KZNHSFA Annual General Meeting (AGM), he was elected Chairperson of the organisation, which oversees high school football’s strategic development in KZN. It includes leading leagues, the fostering of partnerships, and the support of young players’ academic and athletic growth.

Ahead of the start of the season in April, Mngwengwe said that he will strive to ensure the effective operation of the association (KZNHSFA). “This is important to me,” he stressed.

He said the KZNHSFA would also explore collaborating with professional clubs in the province, adding that it would also seek partnerships with universities.

He noted that girls’ football is gaining momentum in KZN. He said he wishes to raise awareness of the girls’ game and to help it grow. Mngwengwe pointed out that KZNHSFA is not solely an association for boys.

“It won’t be easy. It will take time, but these are goals that are not impossible to reach,” he concluded.

Daniella Human’s seven goals light up GWDL opening weekend

With the knockout Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) Top 8 competition done and dusted a week earlier, the GWDL league season kicked off on Sunday.

Mamelodi Sundowns, despite a stiff challenge from the South African Football Association (SAFA) Academy, won the u17 division in 2025, and they showed that they remain the team to beat with a winning start to their campaign.

While Banyana Ba Style cruised to three points with a comfortable 3-0 win over Kenneth FC, their counterparts from Pretoria, the University of Pretoria (Tuks) and Refilwe, also secured all three points in their respective matches.

Tuks faced the newcomers, Black Diamond Sports (BDS), and matched Sundowns with a 3-0 win. Daniella Human initiated the scoring, then netted her second goal with an assist from Landela Gogontle. Zanokuhle Nkosi completed the scoring with a stunning free kick.

Refilwe surged to a big 6-1 victory over Hellenic Falcons, with Thando Mndaweni striking twice and Dineo Kgomosotho, Titelo Modika, Linamandla Bahlehle, and Mbali Madondo also getting their names on the score sheet.

In other matches, Panorama claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over JVW, while TS Galaxy and Chadi Puse Ladies, both newcomers to the league, shared the points after concluding their match in a 1-1 stalemate.

In the u15 division, Tuks continued their u17 counterparts’ winning momentum with a 7-0 victory over BDS. Human, who netted twice for the u17 team, ran wild for the u15 side. She put Tuks ahead with an assist from Buhlebendalo Mahlalela, but that was merely the first of five goals.

Her second was a lone effort, while Vuxongi Makumbia set Human up for her third. Then, Nthabiseng Mahlangu laid on another opportunity, which Human converted to make it 4-0.

Mahlalela, who had assisted on the opening goal for Tuks, also found the net herself, with help from Sinokubonga Sibanyoni.

The Pretoria side’s sixth involved Human, this time as a provider, while Mahlalela provided the finish to bag her brace.

Fittingly, the seventh and last goal of the match was netted by Human, who slotted after being set up by Kamogelo Tlhako.

Refilwe also put on an exceptional performance in the u15 division, outplaying Hellenic Falcons 4-0.

Kgothatso Babedi spearheaded their effort with two goals, while Ziyanda Khalipha and Mbali Madondo each contributed one. Just like Human of Tuks, Madondo also played in the u17 match and scored a goal.

Panorama continued their winning streak by defeating JVW 3-0, while Sundowns clawed their way to a close 2-1 victory despite a strong challenge from Kenneth FC. TS Galaxy was a 2-0 winner over Chadi Puse Ladies.

In the u13 division, JVW began their title defence with a 3-0 victory against Panorama, which made them the only team to beat Panorama on the day.

Mamelodi Sundowns grabbed the spotlight, though, with a one-sided 14-0 victory over Kenneth. Chadi Puse Ladies also picked up an easy three points, but theirs came by way of a walkover victory over TS Galaxy.

Refilwe ran out 5-1 winners over Hellenic, with Owam Zihlangu and Lesedi Masilela netting two goals each, while Tekana Kekana contributed the fifth.

Tuks, whose teams maintained a flawless winning record similar to that of Sundowns, won 4-0 against BDS.

Following the finals of the Gauteng Development League (GDL) Top 8 competition last weekend, the GDL’s league season kicked off over the weekend, with an abundance of goals raining down across all divisions.

In the u19 division, the defending champion, Mamelodi Sundowns, who ended Highlands Park’s two-year reign in 2025, made a strong statement of intent with a dominating performance against Rockefvs.

Coach Kristopher Bergman‘s charges powered their way to a 5-0 victory, demonstrating a strong desire and championship mindset in the early going, which was rewarded when Liano Snyders found the back of the net within the first 10 minutes, assisted by Thando Singo.

On his way to a hat-trick, Tebogo Moreri slotted his opener in the 23rd minute, courtesy of an assist from Sivuziwe Lonzi. Seven minutes later, Moreri made it a brace, again benefitting from a connection and assist from Lonzi.

Shortly before half-time, Sundowns put the game to bed. Kgaogelo Monanyane scored their fourth before Moreri completed his hat-trick in the 43rd minute of the match.

The Brazilians were unable to add to their tally in the second half, but they had convincingly gotten their title defence off to a winning start and bagged all three points on offer.

Kathorus Hyper Academy was one of the entertaining teams in the GDL in 2025, particularly in the second half of the season, where their victories included a win over Sundowns. On Saturday, Kathorus also made a tick in the win column, defeating the Africa School of Excellence, formerly known as the Transnet School of Excellence, which is now under the new ownership of Chipcor Developers, in a high-scoring thriller.

In a challenging match for both teams, Kathorus outlasted School of Excellence 4-3. Gift Muyambo scored the East Rand club’s first goal of their 2026 campaign, assisted by Lefa Radikgomo. Sizwe Sidu then made it 2-0 with help from Ayanda Moilwa.

Esethu Witvoet successfully converted a penalty to score a third for Kathorus, and Sidu laid on an assist for Kgothatso Lenkwe to net the winners’ fourth.

Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), beaten in the final of the GDL Top 8 by Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, took on Panorama and battled their way to a hard-fought 3-2 win.

It was 1-1 at halftime, with Bandile Sithole scoring for RESA, assisted by Brian Molefe. After an hour, Nceba Jozela netted the Vereeniging club’s second goal, with Molefe again providing the assist. He, then, made it a hat-trick of assists, setting up Sithole for his brace in the 72nd minute.

Siwelele (formerly SuperSport United) secured a 2-0 victory over EzeNkosi, Jomo Cosmos. The Prestige Football Development Academy, which was promoted from the Gauteng Development Promotional League, lost 1-2 to Randburg AFC.

Joburg City earned three points with a 3-1 win over the University of Pretoria (Tuks), and Wits Junior hurt the runners-up of the 2025 GDL season, Highlands Park, with a 1-0 victory.

The clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Seven’s Academy was called off due to waterlogged fields at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena.

The Gauteng Development League (GDL) Top 8 finals, which were contested over the weekend, served as thrilling scene-setters for the GDL season, which kicks off this coming weekend.

In the u13 category, Mamelodi Sundowns charged to the title, defeating Siwelele 3-0.

Melokuhle Mzobe struck twice for the Brazilians, while Mosa Lesala added the third.

In the u14 category, Kaizer Chiefs’ coach Mohammed Bhamjee continued on his winning way. In 2024, Chiefs claimed the u13 Top 8 title under Bhamjee. In 2025, they won the u14 title under him.

On Sunday, they repeated that feat, adding another u14 title after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Highlands Park, with Bokamoso Moisi bagging a brace and Akhona Simelane netting the other.

The u15 final featured another showdown between Mamelodi Sundowns and Siwelele.

It ended goalless after regulation time, but the Brazilians captured the title from the spot, winning 4-3 on penalties, with Kealeboga Rasephehi successfully converting the winning kick.

Siwelele tasted success in the u17 final, edging out Kaizer Chiefs 1-0, much to the delight of their loyal supporters. London Samuels scored the all-important winner.

The day’s most eagerly awaited final, the u19 title game, featured Kaizer Chiefs against Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA). In a fiercely contested match, the Chiefs snatched a slim 1-0 win, thanks to a goal from Karabo Modikwe.

The final of the Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) u17 division featured a flurry of goals when Pretoria sides, Mamelodi Sundowns and Refilwe, met for the title.

Both offences flourished, but Banyana Ba Style claimed the honours, recording a 5-3 victory.

In the u15 final, Panorama held on for a 1-0 win over the University of Pretoria (Tuks), who gave it a good go but couldn’t find a way through the resolute Panorama defence.

KwaZulu-Natal’s basketball courts were awash with action on the weekend as the first KZN Top 10 Basketball Competition – contested at 1st team, u16, u15, and u14 level – took place.

Maritzburg College, the hosts of the u19 competition, won the title in their own Alan Paton Hall (APH), dominating Kearsney College 78-38 after making a blistering start to the title game.

It was another title for the Red, Black, and White, a week after they lifted the Jenny Orchard Invitational trophy after beating ESCA in the final, also in the APH.

Kearsney, which had shocked College on the opening day of the KZN Top 10, cruised into Sunday’s championship game with an emphatic 70-43 victory over St Charles College.

College, meanwhile, withstood a feisty Westville Boys’ High challenge to score a hard-fought 56-46 win.

Westville rebounded with a convincing 60-39 defeat of St Charles to finish with the bronze medals.

Most surprisingly, Northwood, who had shown admirable fight to overcome a poor start and make the final of the St John’s Basketball Tournament, was not in contention. Perhaps the massive effort the Knights required to come back from losses in their first two games in Johannesburg caught up with them. The result, in Pietermaritzburg, was only eighth place.

Appropriately for a Hilton/Michaelhouse summer derby weekend, the u16 competition concluded with the arch-rivals facing off for the title. In a low-scoring contest, Hilton College came away with a 32-19 victory.

Maritzburg College ruled the u15 age group, beating Hilton College 52-44 in the final, and College also won the u14 competition, wrapping up the event with a 34-21 win over Hilton.

While College was the top dog, Hilton demonstrated the depth of their basketball programme by reaching three finals. College topped the overall standings, with Hilton in second place and Michaelhouse in third.

Kearsney College placed fourth, Westville Boys’ High fifth, and Durban High School (DHS) sixth. St Charles College followed, in seventh. Northwood, surprisingly, was ranked only eighth, while Clifton College took ninth place, and Glenwood finished tenth.
