It’s Championship Sunday at the KZN Top 10

The competition intensified on the second day of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Top 10 Basketball Competition, with the hosts, Maritzburg College, their Pietermaritzburg neighbours, St Charles College, and Westville Boys’ High, stealing the spotlight in the u19 competition.

St Charles secured a showdown with Kearsney College in Sunday’s semi-finals in the Alan Paton Hall (APH). They concluded their group matches with a perfect win record after beating Westville 52-42.

Saints also handed Northwood, who went down to Westville on day one, a second loss, winning a tight contest 72-68.

The Griffins finished second in Pool A. They preceded their loss to St Charles with a 64-53 win over Hilton College. Later, though, they hit their stride against Clifton College, running away to an 81-30 victory.

Northwood also beat Clifton, winning 66-26, and they beat Hilton College 52-35.

From Pool B, Maritzburg College and Kearsney College advanced to the semi-finals.

On Saturday, College came roaring back after beating Michaelhouse by only three in their opener on Friday before losing to Kearsney by four. The Red, Black, and White had a point to prove after suffering their first loss of 2026, and they made their point.

College powered through Glenwood 91-28 in their first outing, which was outstanding, but they truly caught the eye in their second match, romping to a 74-32 victory over Durban High School (DHS).

Kearsney appeared unstoppable after their win over College, but they, too, tasted defeat, going down by a single point to DHS, 63-64. They bounced back, though, with successive wins over Glenwood (58-27) and Michaelhouse (54-43).

House bagged a convincing 79-38 victory over Glenwood, but DHS had their number, winning a hard-fought contest 45-39.

    u16 Competition

Saturday’s results in the u16 competition, being contested at the Swekyiya SportZone at Kearsney College, led to a semi-final clash between Hilton and Michaelhouse, while the other semi-final will feature Maritzburg College against Northwood.

On Saturday, in Pool A, St Charles College kicked off the day’s action with a 36-29 victory over Clifton College. Hilton, meanwhile, scored a 44-27 win over Westville Boys’ High.

Clifton remained competitive, but suffered a second defeat against Northwood, losing 26-37.

Westville Boys’ High bounced back from their loss to Hilton with an impressive 46-26 victory over St Charles, while Hilton College added a win over Northwood, triumphing 26-21.

In the evening, Westville Boys’ High held off Clifton, winning 38-33, while Hilton College concluded their day with another win, this time by 17 points over St Charles College, 40-23.

In Pool B, Durban High School claimed a 36-28 victory over Glenwood. That was followed by a 31-23 win for Michaelhouse over Kearsney College, and Maritzburg College handed Glenwood a 55-25 defeat.

In a closely contested game, Michaelhouse edged out Durban High School 30-29, while Maritzburg College defeated Kearsney College, 35-27.

Later in the evening, Michaelhouse won against Glenwood, 47-31, and Maritzburg College finished the day with a 44-39 victory over Durban High School.

    u15 Competition

In the u15 competition, Hilton College and Westville Boys’ High engaged in a closely contested match, which ended in a slim two-point win for Hilton by a 35-33 margin.

There was joy for Clifton College, who handed Northwood a 48-39 loss, while St Charles College slipped by Westville, winning 30-29.

Hilton College secured a 49-31 win over Northwood, and Westville found their form against Clifton, claiming a 55-32 victory.

St Charles College handed Northwood a third loss, winning 61-44, while Hilton College claimed a 44-31 win over Clifton.

In Pool B, Glenwood came close to pulling off an upset of Michaelhouse, only to fall a point short, losing 23-24. They found Kearsney a tougher nut to crack, with the Botha’s Hill boys cruising to a 44-20 victory. Kearsney beat DHS, too, winning 45-29.

Maritzburg College saw off Glenwood 66-42, while Michaelhouse downed DHS 42-25.

In the last matches of the day, Maritzburg College overpowered DHS 50-15, while Michaelhouse found the winning formula to beat Kearsney College 35-30.

    u14 Competition

At Westville Boys’ High, Clifton College shook up St Charles on Saturday, with the Durban boys scoring a convincing 32-21 victory.

Hilton beat Westville 34-20, while Northwood ran out 37-24 winners over St Charles, and Hilton had their way with Clifton in a 40-17 win.

Westville went down by three points to St Charles, 24-27, but returned to winning ways with a narrow 24-20 over Clifton. Hilton concluded Saturday’s Pool A action with an emphatic 44-24 victory over Northwood.

In Pool B, Kearsney College secured a 39-23 victory over Glenwood, while Michaelhouse held on for a tight 27-24 defeat of DHS.

Maritzburg College overpowered Glenwood 49-14, but Kearsney was made to sweat for a 30-28 win over Michaelhouse.

Returning to the court, College beat DHS 40-33, Michaelhouse won 34-24 against Glenwood, and Maritzburg added a third clear-cut victory, outplaying Kearsney 49-25.

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Top 10 Basketball Competition, being contested this weekend across various age groups, has courts in the province buzzing.

    u19 Competition

Action was hot on the opening day of the u19 competition, being played in the Alan Paton Hall (APH).

In Pool A, St Charles College, who put together a strong run at the St John’s College Basketball Tournament, where they fell in the quarterfinals against the eventual champions, Michael Mount Waldorf School, kicked off their challenge with a 62-55 victory over Hilton College.

Later in the day, they improved their record to two from two with a 43-31 defeat of Clifton College.

In the match of the day, Westville Boys’ High got the better of Northwood, the runner-up at St John’s, sneaking a 56-55 win over the Knights.

The Griffins, the defending champions, reached the semi-finals of the Jenny Orchard Invitational Basketball Tournament last weekend before their title defence ended with a loss to ESCA. Westville went on to win bronze after a tight 71-68 win over Kearsney College.

Maritzburg College headed into the tournament brimming with confidence after winning the Jenny Orchard Invitational, while their second side won the u19 B Category at the St John’s Basketball Tournament.

On Friday, though, College had to claw their way to victory, winning by only three against Michaelhouse, 44-41, in their Pool B opener. As if that wasn’t enough of a wake-up call, Kearsney College later handed College their first loss of 2026, with the Botha’s Hill boys winning 60-56.

Durban High School (DHS), a dark horse title threat, dumped their fellow Durbanites, Glenwood, cruising to a 73-32 victory.

    u16 Competition

On-court matters were intense in the u16 competition.

While their 1st team went down to Westville, Northwood’s u16 side got one over the ‘Ville, scoring a hard-fought 32-28 victory. They doubled up their win total, edging out St Charles 25-24 in their second outing, to shoot to the top of the Pool A standings.

Clifton College’s u16s gave a good account of themselves against Hilton College, but the Midlands school pulled off a 34-26 win.

In Pool B, Kearsney College won their opening match, scoring a 38-26 victory over Glenwood. They followed up with a 29-23 defeat of DHS.

Maritzburg College also made a winning start, bagging a 37-33 victory over Michaelhouse.

    u14 Competition

In the u14 competition, Northwood ended the opening day with two wins, but by only three points in total.

They squeaked past Westville 25-24 before edging out Clifton College 31-29. In another Pool A clash, Hilton College rolled to a 34-12 win over St Charles College.

In Pool B, DHS recorded a 26-14 win against Glenwood, and Maritzburg College beat Michaelhouse 24-16. DHS then returned to the court to score a second victory, convincingly defeating Kearsney 37-18.

Weekend Football Lineup: GDL, GWDL and GDPL finals at Balfour Park

Gauteng Development League (GDL)The opening rounds of the Gauteng Development League (GDL) and the Gauteng Women’s Development League (GWDL) are approaching rapidly. Before they kick off, though, the finals of the Top 8 competitions in each league will be played this coming weekend at Balfour Park.

    Gauteng Development League Top Competition

Last Sunday, with a full house at Balfour Park, Highlands Park hosted the semifinals for both the GDL and GWDL.

Now, on Saturday, it’s Kaizer Chiefs against Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) at Balfour Park for the GDL title, and Chiefs beat their great rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, and RESA downed Highlands Park.

RESA advanced to the title game after securing a 4-3 victory over the Lions of the North from the penalty spot after their clash had ended 1-1 in regulation time. Kabelo Mofokeng opened the scoring in the first half to put the Vereeniging-based club in the lead. Lethlonolo Masenya equalised for Highlands Park in the second stanza.

Waiting to find out who they would face in the final, RESA and the other Top 8 clubs watched the day’s most anticipated clash between the Phefeni Glamour Boys and the Brazilians.

The match met expectations, with Inga Simama netting the opening goal for Sundowns in the first half. In the second half, Gift Phoku brought Kaizer Chiefs back on level terms.

Chiefs, then, edged ahead through Malibongwe Mtshali, but Sundowns battled back and levelled the scores through Junior Moseou. At the final whistle, it was 2-2, and the contest would be decided from the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Keabetswe Morake then stole the spotlight, denying Sundowns on a couple of occasions to help Kaizer Chiefs eliminate their Chorkloop-based opponents by a 3-2 margin

In the u17 GDL semifinals, Siwelele (formerly SuperSport United) defeated the University of Pretoria (Tuks) 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw during regulation time. They’ll face Kaizer Chiefs in the final after the Amakhosi edged out Sundowns 1-0.

While Sundowns’ hopes were ended in the semi-finals of both the u17 and u19 competitions, they will play for the title in the u15 age group. The Brazilians u15s also got one over Chiefs, with Bafana Ba Style winning 2-0 to book their place in the title game.

They’ll take on Siwelele for the title after Siwelele beat the Africa School of Excellence, previously known as the Transnet School of Excellence, 5-4 on penalties after their match concluded in a tense 2-2 draw during regulation time.

The u14 division was every bit as thrilling as the other age groups. The semi-final showdown between Kaizer Chiefs and Kathorus Hyper Academy was a nail-biter. They shared a 1-1 draw in regulation time before an extended penalty shootout finished 6-5 in favour of Chiefs.

Highlands Park advanced to the final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Siwelele.

In the u13 GDL top 8 semi-finals, Sundowns moved on to the title decider on the back of a 2-0 victory over Joburg City, while Siwelele handed Highlands Park a 3-0 defeat.

Gauteng Women’s Development League Top Competition

The GWDL Top 8 made a comeback, with the event first being held in 2024, but not last year. The winners of the only previous edition of the tournament were Mamelodi Sundowns. This year, the GWDL top 8 included u13, u15, and u17 categories.

In the u17 division, where Sundowns has been a dominant force in the league, the Banyana Ba Style powered their way into the final with a one-sided 7-0 victory over Edenvale.

They’ll face Refilwe for the title. Both finalists represented South Africa and the GWDL at the u17 Confederation of African Football (Caf) Girls Integrated Football Tournament (GIFT) in Zimbabwe last December, where Sundowns claimed the title. Refilwe’s performance at the tournament was less than stellar, but they’ll have an opportunity to show that they belong at the head of the table when they face the 2025 GWDL league champions.

The u15 GWDL final will feature Panorama going head-to-head with Tuks at Balfour Park. Both moved smoothly into the title match, with Tuks outplaying Edenvale 5-0, while Panorama bagged a 3-0 win against JVW.

In the u13 GWDL top 8, Mamelodi Sundowns cruised past Edenvale, winning 5-0, while the contest between Refilwe and JVW went to a penalty shootout after their tie finished at 1-1. Refilwe, then, triumphed 3-1 from the spot.

Northwood falls as Michael Mount crowned St John’s Basketball champs

Michael Mount was crowned the champion of the 2026 St John’s College Basketball Tournament after defeating the two-time defending champion, Northwood, in the final. St John’s College on Facebook.

Unpredictability was a key feature of the St John’s College Basketball Tournament.

When the dust finally settled on Sunday, Michael Mount Waldorf School had claimed the u19 Category A title, while Maritzburg College B won the u19 Category B tournament, and Saheti School was crowned the champion in the u15 category.

Michael Mount faced a challenging final against the defending champion, Northwood, who had also won the title in 2024.

After falling behind early in the title decider, Michael Mount lifted their game, gathered steam, and, with some outstanding three-point shooting, charged past the Knights, on their way to a 65-55 victory.

Michael Mount had demonstrated their capabilities in the earlier rounds of the competition, which included beating previously undefeated St Charles College in the quarterfinals on Saturday before also ending King Edward VII‘s (KES) unbeaten run.

KES had won the Inanda Hoops Classic Challenge in October 2025 and had established themselves as a strong title threat at St John’s, but Michael Mount ended that dream with a heart-stopping 47-45 win.

Northwood’s path to the final was meandering, yet intense. In a stunning turn of events, the two-time defending champion lost twice on Thursday. That left them with no margin of error. They had to win every game they played from then on, and they rose to that challenge.

After winning a tight play-in game against Pretoria Boys High, they eliminated St Stithians in the quarterfinals before ousting St John’s in the semi-finals in a rematch of the 2025 title game.

In the bronze playoff, KES romped to a convincing 42-24 win over St John’s College.

In the u19 Category B competition, Maritzburg College B claimed the title after a highly successful weekend for the Red, Black, and White, which included their first team winning the Jenny Orchard Invitational Basketball Tournament.

College met St Peter’s College in the final and scored an emphatic 61-36 win. In the playoff for bronze, St John’s College B beat Sacred Heart College 38-29.

Saheti faced Hilton College in the u15 final, and scored a comfortable 65-51 win. It was a nail-biter in the third-place playoff, with KES holding off St Benedict’s College 30-29 to win bronze.

Maritzburg College reclaims the Jenny Orchard Basketball Tournament title

Maritzburg College staged a stirring comeback to secure the Jenny Orchard Invitational Tournament title for a second time, having previously won it in 2024. Photo: Jenny Ochard Invitational Tournament on Instagram.

The Jenny Orchard Basketball Tournament title has returned home. Maritzburg College succeeded Westville Boys’ High as the champion of the prestigious tournament on Sunday, with a hard-fought 64-55 victory over a tough ESCA outfit in the final.

Westville’s title defence ended in the semi-finals at the hands of ESCA, who recorded a solid 64-42 win, while College hit on all cylinders in a convincing win over a Kearsney College team that had shone in their previous contests. College, though, was another level up that Kearsney was unable to match, and the Red, Black, and White triumphed 74-45.

With their win in the title game, Maritzburg College won the title for a second time, having previously claimed it in 2024. Michaelhouse had the honour of winning the inaugural Jenny Orchard Basketball Tournament in 2023.

ESCA ran rampant on their way to a place in the title game, but they met their match against Maritzburg College, who revelled in the familiar confines of the Alan Paton Memorial Hall. ESCA controlled the contest in the first half, but the home crowd raised the roof with their very vocal support in the second stanza, and the College team responded to grab control of the match.

The bronze playoff game produced a fittingly tight clash between neighbours and rivals, Westville Boys’ High and Kearsney College, with the Griffins pulling off a three-point win, 71-68.

In the B Division, Kingswood College faced Queen’s College in an all-Eastern Cape final. Both teams entered the title decider with unblemished records.

In a high-intensity contest, Kingswood owned a slight edge, and they came away with a battling 50-45 victory.

In the bronze playoff, St Nicholas Diocesan School B defeated Michaelhouse B 73-54.

The St John’s College Basketball Tournament concludes on Sunday, with Northwood, who began their title defence with back-to-back defeats, in the final again and aiming to win the tournament for a third successive year.

Saturday’s playoffs rewrote the script of the previous two days, with St Stithians College, St Charles College, and King Edward VII (KES), who were all unbeaten, falling in the playoffs. Instead, Northwood advanced to a Sunday showdown against Michael Mount Waldorf School for the title.

On Thursday, when the Knights suffered defeats against St Stithians College and The King’s School Linbro Park, questions were raised about their ability to defend the title.

Northwood, stung and with their pride hurt, met the challenge head-on and lifted their game, knowing they couldn’t afford any more slip-ups.

They finished third in their group, which barely qualified them for the play-in games. However, once afforded a chance to regain their momentum, they showed their championship pedigree.

They took on a tenacious Pretoria Boys High School (PHBS) team for a place in the quarterfinals and were stretched, but the Knights came through with a narrow 55-52 victory

In the quarter-finals, they took on St Stithians, who had beaten them 48-35 in a Pool A clash. This time, Northwood was ready. Playing with intensity and at a high pace, they pulled away to a 57-45 win.

Their reward was a repeat of the 2025 final – a clash with the hosts, St John’s College. Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, St John’s gave it their all, but the Knights had found their mojo, and they powered their way to a 60-48 victory and a place in the title decider.

St John’s had beaten St Benedict’s College 57-40 in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, St Charles College‘s clean record was spoiled by Michael Mount in their quarterfinal clash. In a tight contest dominated by the defences, Michael Mount triumphed 30-24.

Then, in the semi-finals, Michael Mount ended another clean run, sneaking by KES 47-45. KES had cruised to a 49-25 victory over The King’s School Linbro Park in the quarters.

In the u19 Category B playoffs, Lomagundi College defeated the YUT Basketball Academy (Mauritius) 62-34, Crawford Lonehill ran out 53-46 winners against Redhill, and Saheti defeated Alma Mater International School 46-26.

In the semifinals, Maritzburg College B outplayed St John’s College B 51-30, and St Peter’s College defeated Sacred Heart College 34-21 to book their places in the final.

The Jenny Orchard Invitational Basketball Tournament will witness a new champion being crowned on Sunday after last year’s winner, Westville Boys’ High, was eliminated in Saturday’s semifinals by ESCA. To win the title, ESCA will need to get by the high-flying host team, Maritzburg College.

While ESCA cruised to an impressive 64-43 victory over the Griffins in the semifinals, Maritzburg College was every bit as impressive in a 74-45 dismantling of Kearsney College.

Earlier in the day, in the quarterfinals, Westville beat St John’s College (Harare) 65-55. ESCA, meanwhile, rolled to a 67-37 win over South African College High (SACS).

Maritzburg College faced a tough opponent in the quarterfinals, the Soweto Basketball Academy (SBA). The hosts were up for the challenge, claiming a comfortable 74-53 win. In the tightest quarterfinal clash, Kearnsey College outlasted Durban High School 72-67.

While most of the attention on Sunday will be focused on the A Division final, the B Division title game features an Eastern Cape showdown between Kingswood College and Queen’s College. Both take unbeaten records into the final.

In late January, when they met, Kingswood came out on top, winning 31-22. That result, though, will serve as motivation for the Khomani crew with gold medals on the line.

Kingswood College defeated their local rivals, St Andrew’s College B, 74-54 to secure their place in the semifinals, while Queen’s downed Bishops Diocesan College 52-33.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Michaelhouse B defeated Marist Brothers Linmeyer 64-36, and St Nicholas Diocesan School B beat Meridian Karino School 64-50.

Then, in the semifinals, Kingswood College recorded a 77-61 win over Michaelhouse B. Queen’s defeated St Nicholas 44-37.

Action heats up ahead of Saturday’s knockout games at Jenny Orchard

Friday, the second day of the Jenny Orchard Invitational Basketball Tournament at Maritzburg College, provided even more intense action than Thursday’s games, with teams playing for places in the knockout rounds of the event.

    A Division

The defending champions, Westville Boys’ High, maintained their winning streak from the tournament’s opening day. On Friday, in the Alan Paton Memorial Hall, the Griffins won 69-46 against Westerford High. In their following game, they cruised to a 70-33 victory over Northwood B.

The Soweto Basketball Academy (SBA), which lost by three points to Westville on the opening day, rebounded on Friday, overrunning Northwood B 102-33 before snatching a 63-60 win over Westerford.

In Pool B play, the hosts, Maritzburg College, continued their winning ways. They added Pinelands High and Rondebosch Boys’ High to their list of victories. Pinelands gave a good account of themselves, but fell 38-52 to the Red, Black, and White. College then ran riot against ‘Bosch, charging to a big 97-26 victory.

Pinelands High beat Rondebosch Boys’ High 90-54 on Thursday, but incurred two losses on Friday. They also lost a squeaker against St John’s (Harare), going down 50-52. The Zimbabweans added another win when they took down Rondebosch 77-44.

In Pool C, Durban High School (DHS) shot well in an impressive 114-38 win over Wynberg Boys’ High. They were brought back to earth with a bang by ESCA, however, with the Gauteng side powering their way to a convincing 85-67 victory.

ESCA concluded their pool assignments with an undefeated record by outplaying Clifton College 97-34. The Durban school suffered a second defeat on Friday, with Wynberg Boys’ High taking a 51-39 win.

In Pool D, South African College High School (SACS) hit their straps with a commanding 73-31 victory over Glenwood, but they found Kearsney College a bridge too far, with the Botha’s Hill boys easing to a 79-50 win.

Kearsney, one of the tournament’s dark horses, added a 67-38 victory over St Nicholas Diocesan School A.

St Nick’s bounced back from that setback with a tight 60-57 win over Glenwood.

    B Division

In Pool A of the B Division, Michaelhouse B ruled the roost, scoring wins over Meridian Karino School, Alexandra High, and Enjabulweni Independent School.

On Friday, ‘House powered past Enjabulweni, winning 80-37. Meridian Karino, from Mbombela, claimed second place and a spot in the quarterfinals. They beat Alex 73-69 on Friday, but lost 51-85 to Michaelhouse.

Alex, after two losses, tasted victory, keeping Enjabulweni winless by snatching a 69-67 win.

In Pool B, St Nicholas Diocesan B won all their group matches, which included two victories on Friday: 72-41 against Riverwood College and 73-67 against Marist Brothers Linmeyer, who bounced back with an 85-62 win over Etham College. Etham, then, beat Riverwood 74-53.

In Pool C, Maritzburg College B scored a 57-47 victory over Treverton College, while Kingswood College handed Bishops a 75-47 loss. Kingswood College, next, cruised to a 50-23 victory over Treverton College, while Bishops secured a somewhat unexpected 61-56 win over Maritzburg College B.

Since play began on Thursday, Queen’s College had been flying high in Pool D, and they continued their good form on Friday by adding two more victories. They ran through Thomas More College, winning 71-26, before being pushed harder by Maritzburg Cubs, but winning 61-51.

St Andrew’s College B was also on fire on Friday, bouncing back nicely after going down to Queen’s in their opener. They beat Maritzburg Cubs 77-67 and won 74-51 against Thomas More.

The second day at St John’s College Basketball Tournament provided a chance for teams like Northwood, which suffered two losses on the first day, to recover. Others, including St Stithians College, St Charles College, and King Edward VII School (KES), continued their winning streak from Thursday into Friday.

In Pool A, the defending champions, Northwood, found themselves under unexpected pressure after losses in their two Thursday matches. On Friday, the Knights rebounded with two wins, defeating Curro Helderwyk 59-25 and Falcon College 61-29.

Those two victories were, however, insufficient to secure the Durban school either first or second place in the group. St Stithians College finished top of the standings, with The King’s School Linbro Park claiming second spot.

Saints cruised to a 65-18 win over Curro Helderwyk before beating King’s Linbro 48-31 in the battle for the top spot.

Falcon College placed fourth in the pool, with Curro Helderwyk propping up the standings.

In Pool B, St Benedict’s College finished with three wins from their four matches. They started their challenge with three successive victories – over Michael Mount Waldorf School, Hilton College, and St Andrew’s College – but Jeppe stopped Bennies, winning 35-30.

The Bedfordview boys finished top of the standings, however. Michael Mount, in second place, sported an identical record of three victories and one defeat. On Friday, Michael Mount handled St Andrew’s College convincingly, winning 47-26.

Hilton College secured third place, also beating St Andrew’s College, with their match ending 59-41. The KZN Midlands’ side impressed against Jeppe, too, romping to a 47-29 win.

KES completed their Pool C schedule with a perfect record, which St Charles College, in Pool D, matched.

Since the start of the tournament, on Thursday, when they won three games – defeating Michaelhouse, St David’s Marist Inanda, and Crawford College (Sandton) – KES has caught the eye. On Friday, they wrapped up their group games with a 58-45 victory over Pretoria Boys High (PBHS).

    Photo: Actionpix

Despite their loss to KES, PHBS secured second place, winning a key contest against Michaelhouse by a narrow 42-40 margin. ‘House had no problems against Crawford College, rolling to a comprehensive 52-13 victory.

St Charles College, the 2023 champions, followed up wins over Parktown Boys’ High and St John’s College on Thursday with two more victories on Friday, beating St George’s College (Harare) 60-40 and St Alban’s College 60-41.

The hosts, who finished as the runner-up in 2025, ended second in the group after scraping past St Alban’s 42-40. They also scored a 44-27 win over Parktown.

    u19 Category B

In the u19 Category B event, Maritzburg College B finished top of Pool A, with a clean record of four wins from four matches.

They defeated Sacred Heart College, Redhill School, the YUT Basketball Academy (Mauritius), and Saheti. College concluded their group fixtures on Friday with a hard-fought 44-38 win over Redhill.

Sacred Heart College, which finished in second place, won more convincingly than College against Redhill, triumphing 50-30, while the YUT Basketball Academy beat Saheti, 53-46.

In Pool B, St Peter’s College, like Maritzburg College B, also went undefeated, downing St John’s College B, Crawford Lonehill, Lomagundi College, and Alma Mater International School.

On Friday, St Peter’s beat Crawford Lonehill 56-46 in their last group match. St John’s College B secured second place with a high-scoring 81-59 win over Lomagundi College.

The first day of the St John’s College Basketball Tournament was nothing short of remarkable, featuring huge upsets, including a loss for the two-time defending champion, Northwood. While the Knights tasted defeat, some strong contenders caught the eye, including King Edward VII School (KES).

The defending champions, Northwood, who won the annual St John’s College Basketball Tournament in both 202 and 2025, entered the tournament fresh off a hard-fought win over Westville Boys’ High. However, a recent loss to Durban High School (DHS), their first at home since 2020, suggested they might not be quite the powerhouse they had been for the past two seasons.

On Thursday, St Stithians College enhanced that narrative with a comfortable 48-35 win over the Durban school. Then, astonishingly, Northwood suffered a second defeat in the evening, going down 43-51 against The King’s School Linbro Park.

All is not yet lost for the Knights, but they won’t be able to afford any more slip-ups in their quest for a third successive title.

In other Group A matches, Saints followed up their win over Northwood with a 61-28 defeat of Falcon College. The Zimbabweans bounced back with a 53-22 victory over Curro Helderwyk in their next outing. Earlier on Thursday, The King’s School Linbro Park downed Curro Helderwyk 62-32.

In Group B, St Benedict’s College made their case as a team to watch by scoring two tight victories. They opened with a 46-42 win over Hilton College and added a 45-41 victory over St Andrew’s College in the evening. The Makhanda school suffered another defeat, losing by 10 points to Jeppe High School for Boys, 47-57.

Jeppe, similar to Bennies, added a second win, holding off Michael Mount Waldorf 34-32. Michael Mount quickly got their challenge back on track with a solid 56-41 victory over Hilton College.

In Group C, KES made it evident that they have their sights set on a run at the title. They came close in 2024, losing to Northwood in the final.

KES kicked off the day with a 39-29 win over Michaelhouse. That was the first of three wins for St John’s neighbours. They also beat Crawford College (Sandton) 52-30, and rounded off a strong opening day with a decisive 55-38 win over St David’s Marist Inanda.

Pretoria Boys High School (PHBS), also in Group C, impressed. They defeated St David’s 46-32 in the morning and added a 47-38 victory over Crawford College later in the day.

St David’s, beaten by KES, picked up a win, beating Michaelhouse 46-35. Earlier this month, ‘House won 36-32 at St David’s, so that was a pleasing turnaround for the Sandton school.

Group D stands out as one of the most intriguing and challenging groups of the tournament. St Charles College, the 2023 champion, is in the group alongside the tournament hosts, St John’s College, St Alban’s College, Parktown Boys’ High, and Harare’s St George’s College.

St Charles College has not been convincing thus far this season, while St Alban’s College is rebuilding after a disappointing 2025 and has shown significant improvement. St John’s College, the runner-up to Northwood last year, has produced mixed results this season.

On Thursday, though, St Charles College got their challenge off to a winning start, outplaying Parktown Boys’ High 53-40. Then, in the evening, they comfortably handled St John’s, recording a 63-46 win.

The hosts were stretched in their opener, scoring a 46-43 win over St George’s College, but the Harare school returned to the court and chalked up a sharp 44-29 victory over Parktown.

St Alban’s College, like St Charles, celebrated wins over St George’s College and Parktown Boys’ High, beating the former 38-34 and the latter 47-36.

In the 19 Category B competition, Group A started with Redhill School scoring a 59-50 victory over the YUT Basketball Academy. Later in the evening, Redhill continued their success by defeating Saheti, 43-40. Saheti had earlier edged past Sacred Heart College 50-47.

Maritzburg College B picked up a 38-19 victory over the YUT Basketball Academy.

In Group B, St Peter’s College scored a commanding 52-20 win over Alma Mater International School before handing St John’s College B a 40-34 loss.

Lomagundi College won 44-34 against Alma Mater, and Crawford Lonehill secured a 39-25 victory over Lomagundi College.
