  • Mathye on fire for Ben Vorster to close out their annual cricket week in Tzaneen

Mathye on fire for Ben Vorster to close out their annual cricket week in Tzaneen

The penultimate day of the Ben Vorster cricket week delivered some exciting cricket and interesting results.

The hosts managed to round of an impressive fight back after a disappointing display with the bat. The Black Caps only managed 149 before being bundled out in only 26 overs with Anton Lourens (39, 44b) and Njabulo Maseko (39, 45b) steering their team to what seemed to be a sub-bar total.

After the innings break it was clear that the Black Cap bowlers had other ideas and paceman Nsuku Mathye lead the fightback with an impressive spell of fast bowling claiming 4/42. He was well backed up by his captain Ruben Vosloo who pitched in with figures of 3/20 as the hosts defended their low score to come out on top with 15 runs.

Pretoria-Noord claimed their first victory of the week after coming out on top against Vrede with 26 runs in another low scoring affair. The men from Pretoria only managed 159 before being all out. Mark Gornman (36, 42b) toiled away on a slow and low wicket to top score for his team. As in the other low scoring match the second innings proved much harder for the batters.

Ewan Luus (48, 61b), laid a solid foundation with the bat for Vrede falling two short of his half century and after his departure things went pair shaped for the team from the Free State as Ulrich Breytenbach bagged three scalps for only 18 runs and Michael Flanagan joined the party with three scalps of his own (3/31) to guide Pretoria-Noord to a 26-run victory.

The annual price giving dinner was held on the same night with players being rewarded for their good performances throughout the week. Local hero Eldred Hawken attended as guest speaker to provide words of encouragement and share his experience built up from playing at franchise level for the last 10 years.

The fiery fast bowler from Ben Vorster Nsuku Mathye was named as bowler of the week claiming 12 wickets with one five-wicket haul to boot in three matches over the course of the week. The accolade for batsman of the week belonged to Dreyer Marnuae from Hoërskool Wesvalia scoring a total of 235 runs at an average of 78.33 including back-to-back hundreds at the start of the week.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Ben Vorster 149/10 (Anton Lourens 39, Njabulo Maseko 39; Eduardo Dreyer 4/24, Louis Koen 3/32, Lian Henning 2/39); Wesvalia 134/10 (Luan Vermeulen 53, Dreyer Marnuae 20; Nsuku Mathye 4/42, Ruben Vosloo 3/20, Njabulo Maseko 2/47). Ben Vorster won by 15 runs.

Pretoria-Noord 159/10 (Mark Gornman 36, Dean du Toit 27; Charl Cilliers 6/34, Wynand Engelbrecht 2/32); Vrede 133/10 (Ewan Kuus 48, Charl Cilliers 35; Ulrich Breytenbach 3/18, Michael Flanagan 3/31). Pretoria-Noord won by 26 runs.

Waterkloof u15 299/10 (Rico van der Walt 95, Hershelle van Loggerenberg 50, Franco Schmidt 30; Angelo Cloete 3/56, Wayden Mondzinger 2/16, Nathan Howe 2/24, Curtleigh Koetzee 2/62); Lydenburg u18 (Angelo Cloete 24, Kyle van der Berg 24, Blake Mouton 24; Christiaan Hugget 3/27, Luan Ferreira 2/15, Malan van der Berg 2/26). • Free State manage to end their Academy Week on a high with victory over Boland

Free State ended on a high as they beat Boland 50-19 in their last game of the Academy Week hosted by Jeppe High School for Boys in Johannesburg.

The Bloemfontein-based team put up a champaigne performance from the get-go. Erich Visser was at the fore front of the onslaught with an impressive hat-trick of tries.

The Grey College-man delivered a superb performance, providing quick and clean ball for the danger men at the back. He was well backed up by Dailen Geldenhuys who had yet another solid outing in the 10-jumper.

Upfront, Calvin Bolt (eight man), lead the physical battle and was ferocious with his strong ball-carries and solid defence.

It was a tough outing for the Boland team, but they had a shining light in the form of their twinkle toes utility back Jordan Abels.

Abels continued his great form shown through the week and could cross the whitewash to add another try to his tally of the week and succeeded to convert two of his teams’ three tries.

Zimbabwe pushed Namibia all the way in the annual unofficial test match between the two countries.

Second rower Claus Otto was instrumental in his teams’ victory of 27-25, crossing the try line twice and continuously breaching the advantage line with ball in hand. His colleague Delano van der Berg (hooker) was also in the thick of things upfront and was a thorn in the side of the Zimbabweans at ruck time.

This set the platform for the burly inside centre, Stefan Gildenhuys, to run rampant amongst the defenders from the neighbouring country. Gildenhuys secured a well-deserved victory with his visit behind the try line.

For the Zimbabweans Kudzai Chenda (outside back), led the fight back after a 16-point deficit at the break. Chenda broke the Namibian defence twice in a matter of minutes to contribute 10 points to his teams’ tally but it seemed to little too late, with the Namibians holding on to their lead to finish their week strong.

The Pumas nearly pulled off a comeback for the books scoring 28 points in the second half. The man from Nelspruit Reghardt Vermaak (hooker), put in a massive shift upfront and scored twice for his team, but his efforts were in vain as the consistency of the Blue Bulls back line, in particular, their scrumhalf, Zian Cilliers proved to be to good for the Pumas on the day.

South Western Districts came out on top 28-19 against the Limpopo Blue Bulls. It was scrumhalf, Sachin Wagenaar, who proved to be vital in his teams’ victory. Wagenaar had another good outing as he delivered clean ball and was a constant threat around the fringes.

SWD managed to hold on to their lead of 23 points at the break, conceding 19 unanswered points in the second half as the men from up North kept knocking on the door to try and secure a full house for the week.

  • Golden Lions on top against Blue Bulls on Day 1 of Academy Week

The Lions put together a clinical performance to overcome the Blue Bulls by 44-22 in the Jukskei derby of the Academy week.

Forwards coach, Ian Joubert, will be happy with the performance brought to the table by the big men upfront.

The onslaught by the forwards was led by eighthman, Henrico Germishuizen, who impressed with his powerful ball carries. Germishuizen also managed to cross the white wash twice in his teams’ important victory.

With the platform well set upfront it allowed the backline of the Lions to showcase their talent lurking in the backline. Inside centre, Exauce Kevani, had his name on everyone’s lips as he too manged to break through the defences to cross the whitewash. Siphwe Moyo put on a master class from the kicking tee and casually slotted a 60-meter penalty from within his own half and impressed with his tactical kicking ability.

For the men in blue it was their hooker who tried valiantly with a solid performance scoring two of the Bulls’ tries. Scrumhalf, Zian Cilliers, also put in the hard yards and was impressive with his sniping runs from the base of the ruck.

The Sharks opened their account by beating Boland 36-29 in a scintillating curtain raiser on the Collard Field.

Boland were out of the blocks quickly, but the Sharks hit their straps soon after with fullback, Swelihle Mbatha, cutting through the defences to score the opener for his side.

Luke Davidson also rounded of some slick handling to dot down under the posts. The attention, though, was on the man in the number 22 jumper, Akuhluwa Boqwana. Boqwana set the standard with a man of the match performance, scoring two tries and contributing 13 points from the kicking tee.

Although, one must wonder what was said at half-time in the Boland changing room as they came out in full swing in the second half. The men from Boland ran rampant and managed to shrink a lead of 21 points and eventually take the lead in a matter of minutes. Replacement hooker led the fight back with two tries from the back of an impressive Boland driving-maul.

But it wasn’t enough as the men from Natal bounced back quickly securing a victory in a thriller of a match.

The Limpopo Blue Bulls impressed and might have shocked a few with their over the Leopards. The men from up North bagged their first victory of the week by six points (31-25).

Fullback, Dian van Tonder, stood out by contributing 23 of his teams’ 36 points, 10 of which came from two wonderful tries.

For the Leopards it was their lock pairing Pedrie Human and Erich Potgieter were the shining lights. The pair put in a big shift on defence and were ruthless on attack. Human also managed to cross the tryline twice for his team.

The Sharks XV proved to be too good for Border as they emerged victorious with a final score of 39-15. Zankosi Mthiyane (reserwe wing) and hooker, Luthando Makula, were in the thick of things as they scored two tries each. While Adriano Jacobs showed his raw pace on left wing to add five points of his own for the team from Natal.

Border struggled to find rhythm upfront, but managed to get the ball out wide to allow their wingers Thomas Braun and Anthenkosi Msileni to land counter punches by crossing the whitewash.

    Scorers:

    Puntemakers:

Barbarians 28 (21) – Drieë: Divan Vorster (2), Bokomaso Kgang, Thinus Nieuwoudt. Doelskoppe: Vorster (3), Dandre van der Merwe. Diamante 0 (0).

Griffons 34 (12) – Drieë: Juan van der Merwe, Junior Nhlapa, Arrie Ferreira, PJ Botha, Thompo Motsapi. Doelskoppe: Ferreira (3), Wian Muller. Strafdoel: Ferreira. Noord-Natal 5 (0) – Drie: S. Mkwahanzi.

Vrystaat Arende 40 (19) – Drieë: Sarel Taljaard, Barry Pretorius, Hanre du Plessis, Pumelele Banti, Loffie Ackerman. Doelskoppe: Vuyani Moore (3). Strafdoele: Moore (3). WPNS XV 19 (8) – Drieë: DeAndre Mouwers, Wian Koen. Strafdoele: Zander Enslin (3).

Blou Bulle 78 (47) – Drieë: Stefan Pretorius (2), Itumeleng Baloyi, Eagan Roux, Jahred Smit, Victory Akinsbusuy, Lanzo Treeby, Hendre Schoeman, Lethabo Phahlanohlaka, Jayden la Douce, Tzanwani Ompfuna. Doelskoppe: Roux (9).

Mokgosa is soos ‘n Jack Russel by die afbreukpunte.
