Having racked up 164 points in their first two outings at this year’s Academy Week, the Golden Lions find themselves in pole position to clinch their third consecutive title, following back-to-back wins in 2023 and ’24.

In their second encounter, a rematch of the 2024 final and the main match of day two against Eastern Province, they again ran rampant to run away with 56-10.

Jaydon Viljoen is now the leading points-scorer of the week, having enjoyed a flawless day from the tee to convert all eight of his side’s tries. Scrumhalf, Gideon Diedericks, of Hoërskool Noordheuwel, enjoyed a stellar first start to run in a brace of tries, while his Nories colleague, Andrew Lambert, also dotted down twice thanks to a dominant performance by the pack.

The Lions’ driving maul continues to be a lethal weapon in their quest for glory, ensuring that the dangerous backline from south of the Jukskei can launch wave after wave of attack.

Western Province held off a spirited performance from the Lions Welpies to eventually scrape through 25-21. Initially, the Cape-based side looked as if they were comfortably on their way to victory over the Lions youngsters, yet the Welpies refused to lie down.

Prop Diandro Botha led the fightback with another powerhouse performance that yielded two tries. However, early scores by Wege van Zyl and Harry Soboil, as well as the final nail in the coffin by livewire fullback, Chadlin Sellidon, saw WP through.

The battle at the breakdown was particularly ferocious, with both sides relentlessly attacking the ball. Province’s four-point victory has booked a showdown with the Lions in the unofficial final on Friday, which will take place on Hoërskool Middelburg’s A-Field.

The Sharks’ Theo Boshoff had another noteworthy performance in KwaZulu-Natal’s 32-5 victory over Boland. As was the case in the Sharks’ first outing, Boshoff was instrumental with his energetic performance and was rewarded with another try this year.

South Western District‘s Eagles handed Free State their second consecutive loss with a dominant performance. Backed up by Charles Vosloo‘s boot, Henru Nel, Farrel Dido and Caleb Williams all crossed the whitewash as the Eagles cruised to a 25-7 win, rubbing further salt into the Free State wounds.

The Waterkloof duo from the Blue Bulls, Marko Kok and Ronan Bastiaanse, delivered the goods as the side from north of the Jukskei returned to winning ways with a 52-19 romp against the Limpopo Blue Bulls. Along with his brace of tries, Bastiaanse also slotted four conversions to move up to second spot on the points-scorers table.

Rampant Lions rack up century against Griffons in Middelburg

The Golden Lions have no intention of relinquishing their Academy Week title this year at Hoërskool Middelburg. That much is clear following the irresistible start the Gauteng outfit enjoyed against a severely wounded Griffons side.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The Lions ran in an astonishing 16 tries as they annihilated the Purple People Eaters by a massive margin of 108-14 in the main match of the first day. The assault was led by loose forwards, Ryno van der Westhuizen and captain, Grady Ngui, who both rushed in for a brace of tries.

Van der Westhuizen and Ngui, however, were not the only ones to cross the whitewash twice. The ever-impressive Ruan Genis, Samuel Smith and King Edward VII School fullback, Indibabale Mboniswa, all joined in on the fun, contributing another six tries between the three of them. Jaydon Viljoen enjoyed a memorable day from the tee. Having ample opportunities at goal, the Monument marksman slotted 14 of his 16 attempts at goal for a contribution of 28 points.

Whoever has aspirations of taking down the roaring Lions in their hunt for a third consecutive Academy Week title, most certainly have their work cut out.

Eastern Province ended the Sharks‘ run for a shot at the title with a closely contested 39-33 victory. Having to work hard in the second 35 minutes, EP hit their straps, scoring 26 points to the Sharks’ 12, to come back from 13-21 down at halftime to secure an opening victory.

Bulumko Kilani provided the necessary punch with his boot to help the side from the Eastern Cape across the line. He converted all four of his side’s tries and also succeeded with two important penalties, which finally proved the difference between the two sides.

In the main match on the Middies’ C-Field, the South Western Districts Eagles capped off the day’s action with a runaway victory of their own, smashing the Leopards 61-7. Openside flanker, Sirr Lourens, and right winger, Ruzano Stander, contributed four tries between the two of them, while Charles Volsoo converted eight of his side’s nine tries.

The Valke gave neighbours, Namibia, a chilly reception. The Red Devils outside centre, Dylan Jordaan, scored the umpteenth brace of the day to help the East Rand side to a comfortable 37-22 victory, which will see them square off with Griquas on Wednesday.

It only took the first half of their opening game at the 2025 Academy Week at Hoërskool Middelburg on Monday for Western Province to establish themselves as early front-runners this year.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

With a solid display in the first half that yielded 28 points, the side from the Cape did enough to eventually see off Free State 33-20 despite a bit of siesta in the second half.

Displaying early intensity, the Province pack set the platform for flyhalf Francois van der Merwe to unleash his dangerous backline, with No. 8, Thandolwethu Sithole of SACS, delivering a standout performance upfront. Sithole had the Free State defenders clutching at thin air on several occasions with his bulldozing runs and deceptive footwork, which earned him a brace of tries, while the dangerous Chadlin Sellidon also caused numerous headaches for the opposition on the attack.

For Free State, openside flanker Henru Erasmus gave his all and kept coming at WP for the full 70 minutes, both with his strong carries and a valiant display on defence.

Redemption was sweet for the Golden Lions XV, as they avenged last year’s loss by beating the Blue Bulls 31-26 in a seesaw battle this time around. The “Welpies” nevertheless still had to deal with Ronan Bastiaanse, who managed to accumulate 21 of his side’s 26 points.

However, spearheaded by the energetic Llewellyn Vermaak and fellow Helpmekaar Kollege representative, Diandro Botha, who were both exceptional in the loose, along with Monument’s Siyabonga Ncube, the Lions were just too good at the end of the day and full value for their five-point victory. They led 16-15 at the break.

Boland kicked off their campaign with a solid 36-26 victory over Border, thanks to braces from fullback Favian Arendse and Hoërskool Porterville’s Nicolai Diedericks. Arendse’s two tries were richly deserved following a relentless attacking performance from the rear.

The Limpopo Blue Bulls achieved a shock 27-24 victory over the hosts, the Pumas. Flyhalf Juan Randall led the way with a great performance from the tee, slotting three conversions and two penalties, and also weighed in with a try for a personal contribution of 17 points. Pumas’ Hanro Terblanche recorded the week’s first hat-trick of tries in a losing cause.

Over the past two years, no team has dominated the annual Academy Week quite like the Golden Lions.

Follow all the Academy Week action live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The side from south of the Jukskei River in Gauteng has claimed the title two years in a row, albeit with the benefit of home-ground advantage, as Jeppe High School for Boys hosted both the 2023 and 2024 editions.

This year, the tournament has moved to Hoërskool Middelburg in Mpumalanga, where the Red and Whites will be aiming to complete a hat-trick of titles.

All matches will be played on the B and C fields from 7 to 11 July, promising three days of high-octane rugby. Fixtures will kick off at 09:00 on Monday and Wednesday, and at 08:30 on Friday.

In addition to the change of venue, the Lions’ coaching staff has undergone a complete overhaul. Ryno Luus, who led the team in both 2023 and 2024, has moved to Hoërskool Nelspruit, while former forwards coach Ian Joubert has earned a promotion to the Craven Week coaching staff.

Taking the reins this year is King Edward VII School‘s First XV coach, Marco Engelbrecht, while Jeppe‘s Grady Ngui and Hoërskool Noordheuwel‘s energetic Andrew Lambert take charge of the pack.

The Johannesburg outfit will begin their title defence at 14:30 on Monday, facing off against the Griffons in the main match of the opening day. Earlier in the day, the union’s under-17 side, the Welpies, take on what appears to be a formidable Blue Bulls, led by lock Joshua Fourie and vice-captain, Ronan Bastiaanse, at 11:30.

This comes right after what could be another spectacle between Thristan Maree‘s Free State troops and a dangerous Western Province outfit, featuring the likes of Paarl Boys’ High flyhalf, Francois van der Merwe, and Milnerton’s ever-impressive fullback, Chadlin Sellidon.

Preceding the main clash, another thrilling encounter is expected as Eastern Province and the Sharks go head-to-head at 12:45 on Middies’ B field. On the C field, the Leopards face the Eagles from South Western Districts in the day’s feature match, while the Valke take on neighbouring Namibia in the earlier fixture.

Tournament hosts, the Pumas, led by the Middies’ very own Hencoe Janse van Rensburg (No. 8), will meet a traditionally tough opponent in the Limpopo Blue Bulls from the far north. Boland will get proceedings underway on the B field against Border, while the LSEN XV, comprising standout players from the recent LSEN Week, will look to launch their campaign with a win over Border Country Districts.

Although seen as a tier below the prestigious Craven Week, the Academy Week has traditionally been an interesting launch pad for younger players, mostly those with a point to prove, which, in turn, produces some exhilarating performances throughout the week.

    Fixtures – Day 1 – Monday, 07 June:

    B-Field:

    09:00 – Boland vs Border
10:15 – Western Province vs Free State
11:30 – Bulls vs Lions XV
12:45 – Eastern Province vs Sharks
    14:00 – Opening Ceremony
14:30 – Golden Lions vs Griffons

    C-Field:

09:00 – Border Country Districts vs LSEN XV
10:15 – Pumas vs Limpopo Blue Bulls
    11:30 – Griquas vs Zimbabwe
    12:45 – Valke vs Namibia
    14:00 – Opening Ceremony
14:30 – Leopards vs South Western Districts

It was exactly the flair-filled performance the Sharks needed to beat the defending champions, Western Province, in the unofficial final of the 2025 Grant Khomo Week, at St Alban’s College in Pretoria.

After surviving a scare on the second day and drawing 29-29 with the Blue Bulls, the Sharks produced the display of the week to comprehensively dethrone WP with a final score of 51-28.

This feat marks the KwaZulu-Natal Union’s first Grant Khomo title since 2006. Prior to that, they reigned victorious once, claiming the title during the inaugural week back in 2003.

Sharks flyhalf Daniel Miskey and the rest of the Sharks back division made it crystal clear that they were there to play. From the outset, the KZN backline gave the ball air, putting WP under all sorts of pressure.

Miskey delivered a masterful performance in the 10 jumper.

His vision and flair on attack gave the likes of Lisa Sijadu the freedom to run in a brace of tries, while prop forward Nyakallo Masiloane was in marauding form with two tries of his own. In addition, Miskey had a near flawless performance from the kicking tee, slotting five conversions and two penalties for a personal contribution of 16 points.

The defending champions did show signs of putting up a valiant fightback with an energetic spell shortly before and after halftime. Lock Rocco Buchanan gave 100 percent with a tireless outing upfront, but the onslaught from the Sharks’ livewires out wide would ultimately prove too much for the side from the Cape.

The wounded Blue Bulls redeemed themselves with a well-rounded team performance to wallop Western Province XV 43-12. Hooker, Hendré Ehlers, and No. 8, Caleb Pretorius, did the bulk of the damage for the Pretoria-based side with a brace each.

Free State recorded their first victory of the week, beating neighbours Griquas 45-34 in another high-scoring affair. Trailing 10-15 at the break, the Free State outfit finally hit their straps in sensational fashion during the second half.

Through a hat-trick by Rossouw de Waal, the first and only of the final day, the Free Staters managed to amass 35 points in the second stanza. Griquas’ Franklin Stevens ensured some consolation for Griquas with two tries of his own.

The Limpopo Blue Bulls left the best for last as they overcame traditional rivals, the Leopards, by 30-12. Hoërskool Ellisras’ Tino Roberts led the way with a brace of tries, while Johan van Biljon slotted three conversions and three penalties to contribute half of his side’s total.

The South Western District Eagles recovered well from their 21-29 defeat at the hands of Western Province on the second day, to cap off a successful 2025 Grant Khomo Week with a hard-fought 15-5 victory over the Golden Lions in Pretoria.

The highlight of the intensely physical 60 minutes came shortly before the final whistle. Stepping up with the kicking tee, the Eagles’ loosehead prop, Keaton Olivier, showed why front-rowers regularly practice their goal-kicking before training sessions.

Delivering the final blow, Olivier slotted his only penalty for the week, nearly from halfway, to secure a 10-point buffer for the Eagles to reign victorious. Apart from this unusual feat, Oliver was a standout performer on the attack for the side from the Southern Cape throughout the three days of action.

The Eagles’ backline, marshalled superbly for one last time by flyhalf Tanwill Onkers, gave the Lions countless headaches through their entertaining brand of running rugby, which supporters at this year’s tournament had become accustomed to.

Eastern Province, too, recovered well after their first-day loss against the Eagles (10-27), to achieve two from two in their following two encounters. The side from the Eastern Cape handled a dangerous Griffons side relatively comfortably, cruising to a 35-16 win. Grey High School’s Keanu Linch dived across twice for the first brace on the final day.

Flyhalf Nathan Trystman, who was flown in for the injured Alexander Stewart, had a fruitful day with the boot, slotting three conversions and three penalties for a valuable contribution of 15 points.

On the Baloyi A-Field, the Pumas thumped the Valke 29-0 to record their first victory of the week. Loose forwards, Marule Siphesihle (Uplands College) and Hoërskool Middelburg No. 8, Menzi Siyaya, again produced standout performances, allowing their fluent backs acres of space with which to wreak havoc.

Zimbabwe reigned victorious in their international against Namibia, scoring five tries to Namibia’s one in a runaway victory of 34-5. Ethan Zhou stole the limelight, crossing the whitewash twice.

The Iqhawe XV recorded a historical victory, smashing Border Country Districts by 43-11 in the opener of the final day on the Baloyi B-Field, achieving their first ever victory at a National Week.

    Scorers:

    Moshate Field:

South Western Districts 15 (7) – Tries: A-Jay Julies, Rufagon Hendricks. Conversion: Tanwill Onkers. Penalty: Keaton Olivier. Golden Lions 5 (5) – Try: Ray-Nathin van Kolver.

  • Tshituka set to become Norhtcliff’s first Bok

Tshituka set to become Norhtcliff’s first Bok

He is a fighter, a natural-born leader who refuses to give way, and that is how Vincent Tshituka crossed borders, obstacles and paperwork to pursue an unlikely path to become Northcliff High School‘s first-ever Springbok

Tshituka has already had a taste of top-tier international rugby, making his unofficial debut for the Springboks last Saturday against the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

He also represented a South African XV in 2021, following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the recent accolades and excitement in his young career, the 26-year-old’s journey has been far from easy.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Tshituka family relocated to Johannesburg in 2002 amid political turmoil in their homeland, unaware that both Vincent and his brother, Emmanuel, would one day become influential figures in South African rugby.

By then, sport had already played a central role in Vincent’s life.

He initially pursued football as a goalkeeper, but his career path changed significantly when he enrolled at Northcliff High School. In Grade 8, he picked up a rugby ball for the first time.

“When he first started playing, he was already a massive human being,” recalled Tinus Diedericks, current Chairman of the Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association and a long-time mentor at Northcliff.

“Initially, Vincent played for the C and B teams, but he quickly found his feet. By the end of that year, he was running out for the A team. As coaches, we kept refining his skills and, with his incredible hunger to learn, he soon became a formidable weapon.”

Tshituka’s first breakthrough came in his matric year, 2016, when he was selected by the Golden Lions selectors to represent the union at the Academy Week at Kearsney College in KwaZulu-Natal. But it was two years earlier, as an under-16 player, that his spark had ignited.

Despite missing out on selection for any of the Lions’ u16 teams, he made it to the final trials, a turning point in his belief that he was good enough to make it.

Diedericks emphasised that Vincent’s immense mental strength made him a natural leader, complementing his already impressive physical presence. This, too, established him as a key player for Northcliff in a short space of time.

Although he left school nearly a decade ago, Tshituka still speaks highly of the impact Northcliff had on his life.

“He’s building an incredible legacy. In every interview and social media appearance, he reminds people where his rugby journey began. That, in turn, instils great confidence in our current Northcliff boys, serving as a reminder that they, too, can achieve their dreams,” Diedericks added.

Despite a string of setbacks, including the long struggle to obtain South African citizenship to qualify for Springbok selection, Tshituka remained relentless at franchise level, performing week in and week out, patiently biding his time.

And now, from humble beginnings in Blackheath, Johannesburg, a new Springbok star has been born.
