James Swart, captain of Western Province, has been cleared to lead his side in the unofficial final of the 2025 Grant Khomo Week against the Sharks on Friday, 4 July, at St Alban’s College in Pretoria.

Follow all the Grant Khomo action live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

This follows an unusual red card incident during Province’s clash with South Western Districts on the second day. At a mandatory disciplinary hearing, it was established that Swart had erroneously been issued a second yellow card, which was automatically upgraded to red.

Despite the drama, Swart’s availability provides a significant boost to the Western Province pack, particularly with the expectation that forward dominance will heavily influence the outcome of the match.

Adding fuel to the fire, two of the week’s top front-rowers are expected to go head-to-head. If WP loosehead Thomas Meyer earns a starting berth, his battle with the Sharks’ Tunga Griffiths in the scrums promises to be a compelling contest.

Griffiths will be eager to impose himself and provide a solid platform for a dangerous Sharks back division, featuring inside centre Elgenio Oersen and fullback Rosco Williams. Oersen is set to face a fierce midfield challenge from Luca Orgill, whose attacking threat from the No. 13 channel has been instrumental for the Southerners throughout the week.

The curtain-raiser sees another Cape side, Western Province XV, in action following an unbeaten run during the first two days. However, they face a wounded Blue Bulls outfit, who are not only the hosts, but also have a score to settle following a draw on day two, which is viewed by their camp as a loss.

Namibia and Zimbabwe will traditionally kick off the day’s action on the B-Field at 09:00, while Border Country Districts will be in search of their first win as they take on Iqhawe XV in the opening clash on the C-Field.

Free State will face off against neighbours Griquas at 11:30 in the main fixture on the B-Field—a match set to be equally intriguing. The men in white and orange are still chasing their first victory of the tournament, while Griquas aim to complete a clean sweep.

Griffons kick off proceedings on the Moshate Field with an interesting match-up with Eastern Province, followed by a highly anticipated meeting between the Golden Lions and South Western Districts.

Preceding the main match on the C-Field at 11:30 between the Limpopo Blue Bulls and the Leopards, a very dangerous Pumas outfit faces off with the Valke in their hunt for a first victory. Old foes, Boland and Border, meet at 10:15 on the B-Field.

Fixtures for the final day, Friday, 4 July:

    Moshate Field:

09:00 – Griffons vs Eastern Province
10:15 – Golden Lions vs South Western Districts
11:30 – Blue Bulls vs Western Province XV

Late drama on the second day of the 2025 Grant Khomo Week at St Alban’s College, in Pretoria, saw the defending champions, Western Province, and Sharks, book a showdown in the main match on Friday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

In a dramatic finish to 60 minutes of high intensity rugby, the Sharks fought back in spectacular fashion to snatch a 29-29 draw with the hosts, the Blue Bulls.

A victory of 44-35 on the first day over the Golden Lions (44-35), who thrashed Boland 43-0 earlier today, ultimately secured the Sharks their spot to compete for ultimate honours. The side from KwaZulu-Natal would nevertheless be kicking themselves for the string of unforced errors, due to overeagerness as well as rock-solid defence by the opposition, during the first 45 minutes of their encounter with the Blue Bulls

The Pretoria-based outfit, on the other hand, managed to turn opportunities into points, putting the men in black and white under early scoreboard pressure. Reuben Smith‘s performance at flyhalf had the majority of the large crowd at the Moshate Field believing the hosts had secured a second consecutive victory. At the time, Smith had scored a try and converted three, for the Bulls to lead 29-12.

However, the Sharks refused to toss in the towel and wave after wave of attack finally paid dividends at the death.

Left winger Lisa Sijadu‘s relentless runs, with him regularly beating the first defender, were rewarded with a desperately needed brace of tries that got his side back in the running, before Lwanzo Vyambwera dived over to level the score.

Despite this memorable fightback, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool lock, Keegan Fourie, delivered a rousing performance to walk away with the man of the match spoils.

In the main match, Western Province handled a spirited South Western Districts side, claiming victory by 29-21 despite some lapses in judgement and poor discipline. The WP pack laid the foundation through their strong driving malls and physical dominance, with locks, James Swart and Peter Krige, the sons of former Springboks Justin Swart and Corné Krige, stealing the show upfront.

Krige had to move to lock as a concussion replacement for the injured Rocco Buchanan, while Swart, despite receiving the week’s first red card, was named man of the match for an otherwise solid performance, especially at lineout time.

On the Baloyi Field, the Griquas remained unbeaten with another good showing against Zimbabwe, with Hoërskool Upington’s Stephan Fourie running in a brace. In addition, the No. 8’s tireless work ethic established the necessary platform from which Griquas could launch a 26-point onslaught in the second half for a 40-25 victory.

Eastern Province did enough in the first half to secure a first victory of the week, handing the Pumas their second defeat (27-15) in as many matches. Tighthead prop, Entle Ngcaba, of St Andrew’s College in Mkhanda, was in rampant form, charging across for two well-deserved tries.

    Scorers:

    Moshate Field:

Western Province 29 (14) – Tries: Luka van der Westhuizen, Ziyaad Jappie, Jake Dave, Ridah Johnson. Conversions: Dave (3). Penalty: Dave. South Western Districts 21 (7) – Tries: Reese Lewaa, Penalty Try (2).

Blue Bulls 29 (15) – Tries: Reuben Smith, Kyle van Staden, Ethan Williams, Keegan Fourie. Conversions: Smith (3). Penalty: Liam de Jager. Sharks 29 (12) – Tries: Lisa Sijadu (2), Elgenio Oersen, Mojalefa Mogale, Lwanzo Vyambwera. Conversions: Daniel Miskey (2).

    Baloyi Field:

Eastern Province 27 (24) – Tries: Entle Ngcaba (2), Selunathi Mfundisi. Conversions: Nathan Trytsman (3). Penalty: Trytsman (2). Pumas 15 (10) – Tries: Menzi Siyaya, Lihle Nkadimeng. Conversion: Kgontse Masilela. Penalty: Masilela.

Griquas 40 (14) – Tries: Stephan Fourie (2), Jay-Dee Isaacs, Lee-Marquin Cronjé, Keanu Miles, Hanco Klopper. Conversions: Cronjé (4), Isaacs. Zimbabwe 25 (15) – Tries: Nicholas Mangwiro, Mukudzei Chisi, Miguel Mavera, Tafara Gara, Liam Britten.

The fixtures for the final day, Friday, 04 July, are:

Western Province XV made it two from two for the Western Cape over the Free State with a thorough 37-18 victory on the second day of this year’s Grant Khomo Week, at St Alban’s College in Pretoria.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The WP outfit found their spark in the second half, scoring 27 points to Free State’s three, having trailed 10-15 at the break. Danté Davids, the Capetonians’ nippy fullback, did most of the damage, rounding off twice for a brace of tries, of which one could’ve been voted try of the day.

Left wing, Liam Phillander, also touched down, while inside centre, Divan Meyer, kept the scoreboard ticking with his boot. Meyer was again deadly accurate from the kicking tee, succeeding with four conversions and three penalties for a personal contribution of 17 points.

The battle between the two packs was a sight to behold. Although on the losing side, Free State’s big men fought valiantly on defence and put in some big hits, with especially openside flanker, Dylan Stassen, keeping Province on their toes in the loose.

On the Baloyi Field, the Leopards bagged their first victory of the tournament, comfortably seeing off traditional rivals, the Valke, 39-15. Right wing, Karabello Kgamanyane, scored twice once his backline got on the front foot, while lock, Daniel Schoeman, stoked the flames upfront to lay the platform for Kgamanyane and the rest of the back division.

Lukhanyo Dauwa‘s brace sealed the Purple People Eaters’ second victory on the trot, as the Griffons walloped Border 38-17 in the second game on the Moshate Field. It was clear from the start that the side from Northern Free State weren’t going to make it easy for Border. Through offensive defence, they turned opportunities into points, in the end making the win look rather comfortable.

The Golden Lions and the Limpopo Blue Bulls both kept their opponents scoreless while running rampant in the opening encounters of the second day. The side from Gauteng amassed 43 points against Boland, stamping their authority through early forwards dominance and flyhalf, Ndzalama Mbhalathi, once again dictating matters superbly at the back.

Limpopo’s forwards also enjoyed the upper hand as they laid the foundation for their lethal backline to run riot in their 60-0 romp against Border Country Districts. Speedster Cohen Koopman exploited the dominance to run in two of Limpopo’s 10 tries.

    Puntemakers:

Vrystaat Arende 23 (17) – Drieë: Xander de Beer (2). Doelskoppe: Hanco Nel (2). Strafdoele: Nel (3). KwaZulu-Natal o.18 17 (12) – Drieë: Jurgens Pretorius (2), Gerber Diedricks. Doelskop: Diedricks.

Blou Bulle o.17 31 (27) – Drieë: Ewald van Niekerk, Jaap Stolp, Reagan Blignaut. Doelskoppe: Willie Pieterse (2). Strafdoele: Pieterse (2). Skepdoel: Pieterse (2). Western Cape Disas 27 (13) – Drieë: Francois de Villiers, Wade Wilfred, Yanick Mwamba, Jaydon Adrie Steenkamp. Doelskoppe: Steenkamp, Rioscoe Julius. Strafdoel: Junior Louw.

Griffons Platteland 28 (22) – MJ Hattingh (2), Wian Visser. Doelskoppe: Andries de Wet Steyl (2). Strafdoele: De Wet Steyl (3). Westelike Provinsie Noordelike Voorstede XV 12 (5) – Drieë: Haddon Plaatjies, Joen Davids. Doelskop: Plaatjies.

The defending champions exhibited ferocious intent to defend their title and were relentless in turning offensive defence into lethal attack. Pressurising the Free Staters into numerous unforced errors, the hooped jerseys showcased their willingness and ability to attack from anywhere on the field.

They showed a preference to launch attacks from broken play, and their speedy backs capitalised on any space given to them. This was evident as outside centre, Luca Orgill, beat his man twice for a well-deserved brace of tries, while their pocket-rocket at scrumhalf, Devon Booysen, also kept the Free Staters guessing with his snipping runs, catching them off guard a couple of times.

Upfront, lock, Corné Ferreira, set the tone through his early try. Besides scoring, Ferreira was a workhorse in the trenches, throwing his body around all over the park to lead the commanding defensive efforts, too.

Although a tough day at the office for the men from the Free State, they never stopped probing, with No. 8 and captain, Neil du Randt, in particular putting in a massive shift on both attack and especially defence. Du Randt was ultimately rewarded with a well-deserved five-pointer, although it was not enough to even slightly rattle what seems to be a very hungry WP outfit.

In the curtain-raiser, last year’s runners-up and hosts of this year’s tournament, the Blue Bulls, kicked off their campaign by comfortably seeing off Boland 32-13. Outside centre, Dandré Brink, led the charge and crossed the whitewash for two of his side’s four tries.

Brink was well supported by flyhalf Reuben Smith‘s deadly boot. The Blue Bulls’ general nailed three conversions and three penalty goals for a personal contribution of 15 points.

On the Baloyi Field, the Western Province XV scraped by the Pumas with 30-27, thanks to a 15-point contribution from their sharpshooter, Divan Meyer, who, like Reuben Smith, slotted three conversions and three penalties to contribute half of his side’s points.

Griquas gave the Iqhawe XV a proper welcome in the Jacaranda City, scoring 36 unanswered points in the second half to reign victorious by 50-14. Although getting a hiding in the second 30, the Iqhawe XV impressed during the first stanza, scoring the first two goals of the game to lead by 14-0 in no time.

The clash between the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks and the Golden Lions on the first day of the 20th annual u16 Grant Khomo Week, at St Alban’s College, in Pretoria, showcased exactly what makes u16 rugby so exciting.

With only a handful of minutes to spare, it was still uncertain which side would be victorious in the third match of the day.

After a breathtaking first half an hour, during which three tries were scored by both sides, the Sharks and Lions exchanged heavy blows in a seesaw second half.

Rosco Williams, who played on the right wing instead of his usual position of fullback, was the first to cross the line, on his way to a hattrick in the match. His efforts helped KZN into a handy 24-7 lead at one stage.

The tide, however, turned swiftly as the Lions’ inside centre and captain, Blessing Monareng, surpassed Williams’ feat by dotting down a memorable four tries.

Monareng’s opposite number, and the man of the match, Elgenio Oersen, proved to be the difference between the sides, however. Like Williams, he ran rampant throughout a high-intensity contest, scoring a brace of tries as the Sharks scored a 44-35 victory.

The South Western District’s Eagles’ backline proved to be equally dangerous, scoring most of their side’s points in a 27-10 victory over Eastern Province.

Captain and lock, Logan Jacobs, led his troops well and helped to establish a solid foundation with his robust physicality. That sound platform allowed flyhalf, Tanwill Onkers, to release the agile SWD speedsters out wide.

Onkers’ orechestration of the Eagles’ attack earned him the honour of being named the man of the match.

Zimbabwe lit up Baloyi Field in their opener. They ran in 11 tries to thump Border Country Districts 71-3. Inside centre, Denzel Nyambo, dotted down three times for the first hat-trick of the 2025 week, while left wing, Tafara Gara, crossed for a pair of his own.

Border opened the first day, and their account, with a tightly contested 26-22 victory over the Leopards.

Inside centre and captain, Riley Hansel, led from the front and was justly rewarded with the winning try.
