A draw between Oakdale Landbou‘s Bulle and Hoërskool Garsfontein’s Bere was a fitting reflection of the 70 fiercely contested minutes that preceded the final whistle on Thursday at the Absa Wildklawer tournament, in Kimberley.

With the lead changing hands on multiple occasions, Bere flyhalf Joshua Gouws slotted his third penalty of the match to level the scores at 30-30.

In addition to his accurate goal-kicking – three penalties and two conversions – Gouws delivered a commanding all-round performance. His incisive attacking play consistently tested Oakdale’s defence and provided Garsfontein with crucial momentum throughout the contest.

The opening 20 minutes, however, belonged to the side from Riversdal.

Starting strongly, Oakdale’s forward pack dominated early proceedings, providing quality possession for fullback Reinhart Viljoen and company to launch attacking movements with freedom.

Garsfontein responded through their talismanic tighthead prop, Luan van den Berg, whose powerful carries have been a hallmark of their season.

He was ably supported by the “Tower from Namibia”, lock JJ Fourie, who imposed himself across the field, particularly on defence. Hooker Justin Blom also impressed, bringing energy and dynamism to broken play.

The much-anticipated clash between Van den Berg and Oakdale’s Kai Pratt materialised, not so much in the scrums, but through some sizzling handling and impressive running lines from both front-rowers that captivated the crowd.

In the match that followed, Paarl Gimnasium opened their Wildeklawer campaign with a commanding 46–20 victory over Northwood.

The outstanding Markus Muller, as usual,  stood out for Gim, further bolstering his claim for the SA Schools no. 13 jersey by scoring his fourth hat-trick of the season.

Up front, blindside flank Hendré van Zyl delivered a fine performance, helping to set the tone for Gim with his boundless energy and relentless work rate. Despite the margin of defeat, Northwood can take pride from their performance after putting 20 points on a side that many consider to be the finest team in the country.

Northwood’s refusal to back down was commendable, with flashes of brilliance on display, most notably from outside centre Bongane Khumalo, whose attacking flair caught the eye.

Earlier in the day, Outeniqua and Hoërskool Monument played out a thriller, with the Kwaggas edging the Wit Bulle, from Krugersdorp, by a single point, sneaking a 21-20 victory.

Outeniqua fullback Jade Peterson lit up the A-field at Hoërskool Diamantveld with his scintillating counter-attacks, one of which caught the Krugersdorp side completely off-guard.

For Monument, captain and eighthman, Vincent Roberts, delivered arguably his best performance of the season. A formidable ball carrier, Roberts repeatedly breached the gain line, giving his team the ascendancy for the better part of 60 minutes.

Durban High School (DHS) overturned a seven-point deficit in the dying moments to preserve their unbeaten record in 2025 in their opening fixture of the Absa Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley, on Thursday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The Horseflies ran in two tries in quick succession to come back from 12–19 down and defeat the Jade Brigade, of Hoërskool Stellenberg, 26–19 in the third match of the tournament’s second day.

The decisive moment came when, after DHS had driven the ball up to the Stellenberg 22 through a number of phases, inside centre Zingce Simka burst through the defensive line to dive over for the match-winning score in the left-hand corner just before the final whistle.

However, it was tighthead prop Bobbie Udo-Iding who laid the foundation for the Durban side’s late surge. His powerful carries kept the Horseflies on the front foot and placed their Western Cape opponents under heavy pressure. Captain and openside flank Daniel Ikotela also impressed, delivering a tireless performance in broken play.

For Stellenberg, flyhalf Ethan van Biljon distinguished himself, once more. He dictated proceedings with composure and flair, keeping his side competitive against the physically dominant DHS outfit. Lock Juvan Burden, still only in Grade 11, raised his intensity and gave the Durban side plenty to think about with his physicality and work rate.

In the day’s most emphatic result, Boland Landbou delivered a scintillating attacking display, running in 10 tries en route to a 64–5 demolition of Hoërskool Framesby – the largest margin of victory at the tournament thus far.

The Agter-Paarl side showcased precision and pace in a performance marked by a hat-trick and three players with a pair of tries each.

It was no surprise that scrumhalf Jayden Brits led the charge. His crisp service to fly-half Pieter Bergh and the dynamic Ocks twins, Jadon and Jason, set the platform for free-flowing rugby. Jason, the more prominent of the pair, crossed the whitewash three times, including a breathtaking solo effort launched from near the Boland Landbou half.

Earlier in the day, Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen was made to work hard for their 20–10 win over the Donkies of HTS Drostdy.

Playing in chilly early morning conditions, the teams were evenly matched for much of the encounter. However, a moment of magic from left winger Otlatleng Zulu, who scored a superb solo try, proved decisive and shifted momentum in favour of Jansies.

Captain and hooker Marco Ventura, who was named the Man of the Match, was relentless up front. A constant threat at the breakdown, Ventura carried effectively throughout the clash, and helped his side gain the edge in a fiercely contested encounter.

As the heavens opened over Kimberley on Wednesday, the stage was dramatically set for a titanic clash of two powerful packs in the final match on day one of the 2025 Absa Wildeklawer tournament.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

Ultimately, it was Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) who emerged victorious, edging out Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) 20–18 in a nail-biting contest. It was their first win over the Stellenbosch powerhouse in three years.

Paul Roos made a late change to their starting XV, with hooker Altus Rabie cleared to play and leading the side in the No. 2 jersey.

His inclusion added even more intrigue to what was already a highly anticipated battle amongst the forwards.

As expected, Rabie made an immediate impact, lighting a spark that in eighthman Gert Kemp, who was pivotal with his ball carries, consistently gaining ground with powerful surges downfield.

But, for the Wit Bulle, it was their loose trio who proved the antidote to the Maroon Machine‘s relentless assault. As usual, openside flank Luan Potgieter was a crucial ball-winner at the breakdown, with his tireless work securing him turnovers to go along with a brace of tries, both of which he scored from dominant driving mauls.

Alongside him, blindside flank Elwin Jansen van Vuuren impressed with his powerful runs, while eighthman Stefan McDonald disrupted Paul Roos’s mauls repeatedly, causing headaches for the Maroon Machine.

In the end, though, it was Affies’ defence that made the difference, especially in the final 18 minutes after a lightning delay had halted proceedings. Holding firm under immense pressure, they clung to a narrow two-point lead after replacement hooker, Lehan Barnard dived over for PRG.

Flyhalf Ruben Groenewald also deserves special mention for the way he managed the game in torrential conditions. He added five crucial points with a well-taken penalty and a conversion that ultimately secured the slender winning margin.

Hoërskool Waterkloof shrugged off last week’s 24-31 defeat to Hoërskool Nelspruit to deliver a dominant performance on the opening day of the 2025 Absa Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

The Klofies came out firing and handed the hosts Hoërskool Diamantveld, a resounding 54–26 loss on their home turf in the City of Diamonds.

The Pretoria school dominated up front, setting the tone from the very first line-out with a powerful driving maul, which culminated in the first of a brace of tries for hooker Ruan Jacobs.

It was a return to the physical dominance traditionally associated with the Klofies’ pack. Their supremacy in the forward battle provided the perfect platform for captain and flyhalf Ronan Bastiaanse to deliver a Man of the Match performance. His slick distribution and creative flair ignited the Pretoria backline, while he masterfully controlled the tempo of the game.

Eighthman Marko Kok looks to be hitting peak form just in time for the Craven Week selection window.

For Diamantveld, star lock Zuan Rautenbach, once again, impressed with his relentless work rate and strong carries, and stood out in an otherwise disappointing showing from the local school.

However, the spotlight ultimately fell on the home team’s nippy and explosive fullback Clinton Brits. Lethal on the counter-attack, he capitalised on two defensive lapses by the visitors to dot down twice to boost Diamantveld’s tally.

Waterkloof’s emphatic victory, and scoring over 50 points, adds extra spice to Saturday’s highly anticipated showdown against the formidable Jade Brigade from Hoërskool Stellenberg.

  • Five to Watch: Rising Stars set to shine at 2025 Absa Wildeklawer

Five to Watch: Rising Stars set to shine at 2025 Absa Wildeklawer

    Photo: Frans Lombard/Actionpix.

As South Africa’s schoolboy rugby fanatics ready themselves for the biggest schoolboy rugby tournament-arguably the largest of its kind in the world -the players from the country’s most prestigious rugby schools are beginning to feel the hype.

The highly anticipated Absa Wildeklawer kicks off on 30 April at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

As always, ahead of this colossal clash of the titans, the team at SuperSport Schools Plus has taken the plunge and nominated five players who could not only prove to be match-winners for their sides but also emerge as standout performers at the festival.

It’s important to note that players previously featured in our Five to Watch series will not be included again, as we’ve chosen to dive deeper into the rich well of talent within our schoolboy rugby structures.

That said, players like the formidable outside centres Markus Muller and Ethan Adams will undoubtedly remain massive attractions. Paul Roos Gimnasium‘s Gert Kemp will also be poised to make their presence known in the forward battles that are set to light up the Diamonds‘ home turf.

The Pretoria boys, Hoërskool Garsfontein’s Luan van den Berg, and the Wit Bul from Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies), flyhalf, Ruben Groenewald, will be key players for their respective sides, facing some imposing opposition.

Nevertheless, here are this weekend’s Five to Watch:

Zingce Simka – Durban High School

Having already donned the South African Schools A jersey in 2024, Zingce Simka has cemented his reputation as one of the most promising midfielders at schoolboy level. With fierce competition, especially in the midfield, there is no stage bigger than the Wildeklawer to make a push fot the mantle of the best in the midfield.

A powerful ball-carrier and defensive cornerstone, Simka will play a critical role for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit as they face off against Stellenberg‘s Jade Brigade and, more challengingly, against the powerhouse Paarl Gimnasium – as DHS tries to keep their unbeaten 2025 record intact.

    Kai Pratt – Oakdale Landbou

Standing at 185 cm and tipping the scales at 115 kg, Oakdale Landbou‘s Kai Pratt will cut an imposing figure on the Kimberley turf.

Come scrum time, the hulking loosehead prop from the Bulle will be a tough man to shift. His clash with fellow powerhouse Luan van den Berg promises to be a standout duel when Oakdale faces Hoërskool Garsfontein on Thursday morning.

Yet, it’s Pratt’s tireless work rate – both with and without the ball – that truly elevates the Riversdal side in attack and defence.

    Divan Pieters – Paarl Gimnasium

Divan Pieters, the unsung hero of Paarl Gimnasium’s backline, has been a consistent playmaker throughout the 2025 season.

Orchestrating attacks from the rear with aplomb, he has given Markus Muller and company the freedom to launch attacking forays from almost anywhere on the pitch.

His attacking prowess may go unnoticed by some spectators, but opposing defences will feel it acutely. With an uncanny ability to read the game and make high-pressure decisions appear effortless, Pieters is a silent assassin in Paarl Gim’s arsenal.

    AJ Meyer – Grey College

After recently returning from injury, Grey College‘s South African Schools lock AJ Meyer has already made a major impact. Despite his side falling to Paarl Gim last week, Meyer’s presence in the physical exchanges, which brought him two tries, would have provided a massive boost to the coaches and supporters alike.

A force in the lineout and a relentless contributor in both attack and defence, Meyer brings the full package to Grey’s forward unit. Should he rally that pack effectively, Helpmekaar College could face a very long Thursday.

Tommy Muller – Paarl Boys’ High

The Paarl Boys’ High hooker has become a fixture in the famed striped jersey, seemingly never tiring. His relentless energy and high work rate have been essential to the success of the Boys’ High pack.

Muller is more than a presence in broken play. He is also a technician at set pieces. Often overlooked, lineout throwing is an art that Muller appears to have mastered, delivering pinpoint throws that allow his side to launch dangerous attacks from rugby’s most potent set piece.

The King Price Derby Series match between Pretoria Boys High School and Maritzburg College on Saturday afternoon in Pretoria delivered on expectations and then some.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com)

After a scintillating performance by their pack, College was victorious by a 45-28 margin.

Captain and eighthman Vasi Vyambwera made it clear from the get-go that he would be ruling the roost among the big men upfront. His barrelling runs kept the visitors on the front foot for most of the game. They also brought him two tries, with his first being College’s opener.

Hooker, Theo Boshoff delivered a barnstorming performance, as he, too, shone with some impressive runs, while his lineout throw-ins were on the money.

The game was highlighted by the physical battle raging between the two packs, but the Red, Black, and White‘s outside centre, Amahle Hadebe, still managed to steal some of the limelight from the big boys up front. Running hard attacking lines at the Candies‘ defence, he exhibited skilful attacking prowess.

Like his skipper, Hadebe made the dive for five twice. He was, in fact, the only backline player to score a try in the match.

Boys High kept bashing away at College, and, with the home crowd firmly behind them up until the final whistle, they found some rhythm in the last 20 minutes. During that time, their driving mauls forced the KZN side onto the back foot and twice they paved the way for openside flank Tristan Heinz to bag a double of his own.

Another highlight of the fierce clash was the immaculate place-kicking of College’s scrumhalf, Dom du Toit, and the Candies’ fullback, Blake Mager. Both boasted perfect records at the end of the match, with Du Toit slightly outscoring Mager after landing six conversions and a penalty. Mager, meanwhile, converted all of Pretoria Boys High’s four tries.

At King Edward VII School, in Johannesburg, the Reds‘ captain, Sam Bruwer, led by example to help his side to a narrow three-point win over a game Parktown Boys’ High School team. In the end, the reliable kicking of fullback, Indibabele Mboniswa, proved to be the decisive factor between the sides. He contributed seven points towards the KES victory, banging over two conversions and a penalty as the home team scraped a narrow 17-14 win.

Bruwer and eighthman, Chenidu Amadi, produced industrious and effective performances for the home side, and they were rewarded with a try each.

The visitors certainly earned respect with their never-say-die attitude, which tested KES from the first whistle to the last. Parktown number 8, Siya Masinga, made sure that Amadi had his hands full on defence, while right wing, Oyisa Mjiwu, rightfully and deservedly, rounded off a practice-ground move from inside his half, to give Parktown a glimmer of hope, but it wasn’t quite enough to steal a shock victory.
