    Paarl teams overwhelm opponents

Markus Muller dives over for his second hat-trick of tries this season in his side’s 102-0 victory over King Edward VII School in Stellenbosch. Photo: Frans Lombard/Actionpix.

Paarl Gimnasium capped off a successful day for the South, which won six of eight games, on the first day of the NMI Toyota North/South Tournament at Paul Roos Gimnasium, in Stellenbosch, on Friday.

Four tries from right-wing, Johan Kleynhans, followed by a hat-trick of tries by captain and outside centre, Markus Muller, and doubles from Thomas Saunders and the replacement wing, Jeraahno Jager, helped power Gim to an astonishing 102-0 win over beat King Edward VII School (KES).

Muller, who is already enjoying a season to remember, continued to stake his claim for the SA Schools number 13 jersey by scoring his second hat-trick of tries and his eighth try in only three matches so far this year.

The spotlight, though, belonged to Kleynhans, who didn’t just have to run it in but had to work hard to score his four tries.

Quinton Potgieter, Gim’s eighth-man, led an impressive pack with authority. Although he scored only one try, he deserved more for his high work rate and bullocking runs, which set the KES defenders on the back foot.

In the curtain-raiser, Paarl Boys’ High made Affies, their next opponents, sit up and take notice, by smashing Hoërskool Waterkloof 66-0. That result certainly adds some spice to the clash between two of the giants of South African schoolboy rugby, who meet on Monday evening.

Tommy Muller, Boishaai’s hooker, was exceptional, as always. Apart from scoring two tries, which came off the back of strong driving mauls, Muller kept the Klofies busy with his energetic ball carries in broken play. His example fired up the potent Boishaai pack, including man of the match, lock Gershom Pieters, which dominated the contest from start to finish, and laid on a sound platform for Paarl Boys’ High’s dangerous backline.

Flyhalf Francois van der Merwe did an exceptional job in spreading the ball well with an abundance of possession. His excellent distribution created opportunities for the speedsters on the outside, who made Waterkloof pay, running in tries that looked all too simple.

It was a well-deserved reward for the loosehead prop’s excellent performance for the southern suburbs’ team.

Apart from being a handful with his pick and drives around the breakdown, which was the source of his two tries, he kept the Welkom side busy with his energetic contributions in broken play.

Parel Vallei made a splashy debut at the North/South tournament with a big 57-12 victory over their fellow newcomers, the Mzwandile Mali XV. The side from Somerset West performed confidently and showed that they were not scared to give the ball air, which was reflected in the hat-trick of tries scored by fullback Shudley Rhoda.

He benefitted from the acres of space afforded him because of the dominance of the Parel Vallei forwards, led by 8th-man Renato Tosi, whose physical presence, especially when in possession, kept his side on the front foot. That created opportunities for Rhoda and company to run rampant at the back.

There were, however, some promising signs from the Mzwandile Mali XV. In the second half, they found some rhythm on attack, which caught out the Parel Vallei defenders on a couple of occasions and brought them reward for their willingness to play running rugby.

  • Five to watch – The centre of attention at the Noord/Suid

The 11th NMI Toyota North/South tournament will, undoubtedly, feature many of South Africa’s most talented young rugby players in action. However, the battles in the midfield will be the “centre” of attention.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

It is, after all, in that department where the South African Schools selectors will have an abundance of exciting players to choose from, with players like AffiesNicholaas Grobler and Helpmekaar‘s Ty Ax eager to throw their names into the hat for the 13 jersey.

Thus far, however, it has been a two-horse race between Grey College‘s bruising Ethan Adams and Markus Muller, from Paarl Gimnasium, who both feature in SuperSport Schools Plus’s Five to Watch for the 2025 North/South Tournament.

    Ethan Adams – Grey College

Widely known as Ethan “The Tank” Adams, thanks to the popular voice of Johan “Spoed” Smith on SuperSport Schools commentary, Adams has been a massive figure, literally and figuratively, in the rugby giants from Bloemfontein’s backline. In 2024, when he was in grade 11, he was selected for the South African Schools side. His powerful runs in the midfield have made defending against the Grey side especially difficult. Alongside his effectiveness on attack, he doesn’t shy away from putting in some big hits on defence, too.

    Markus Muller – Paarl Gimnasium

The try-scoring machine from Paarl Gimnasium, Markus Muller, will seek to keep making the dive for five in his team’s two outings in Stellenbosch. In 2024, Muller followed in the footsteps of the famous Gimmies’ centre and Springbok captain, Jean de Villiers, when he became the second player from Western Province to make a South African Schools side from the Western Province XV team. His superb vision and big-match temperament will be one of the keys to Gim’s success at the Noord/Suid Tournament.

Ruben Groenewald – Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool

When speaking about a mature head on young shoulders, the Wit Bulle and Affies’ fly half, Ruben Groenewald, comes to mind. Possessing the vision of an experienced 10, Groenewald is the orchestrator of the Wit Bulle’s attack, especially with a dangerous midfield consisting of Divan Fourie and Nicholaas Grobler on his outside. He also possesses a well-considered tactical kicking game, which regularly turns the opposition around and puts Affies’ massive pack of forwards on the front foot.

Gert Kemp – Paul Roos Gimnasium

Talking about tanks, the hosts’ openside flanker, Gert Kemp, deserves a special mention. His high work rate all over the field is immense and that makes him a big weapon in the Maroon Machine‘s arsenal for a second consecutive year. He will give Garsfontein and Noordheuwel all they can handle at breakdown time. Kemp is proficient at creating turnover ball, and that skill makes Paul Roos very dangerous as they turn defence into attack.

Luan van den Berg – Garsfontein

One of the best scrummagers at the tournament this year, Luan “Proppie” van den Berg, will look to lead a dominant Garsfontein pack from the front row. He will be a strong contender for a place in the SA Schools side later this year and will be especially familiar to SA Schools’ scrum coach Cobus van Dyk, who is at the Noord/Suid Tournament with his Waterkloof side.

The 11th NMI Toyota North/South tournament will feature a tasty Western Cape flavour this year.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

The event has moved from Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies), in Pretoria, to Paul Roos Gimnasium, in Stellenbosch, and the newcomers include more newbies from the Western Cape, who will be in action on one of the biggest stages on the South African Schools circuit.

The North/South Tournament has also become a can’t-miss event for selectors ahead of the provincial season, which takes place in July. It’s also a showcase for many players who will earn selection for the SA Schools and SA u18 teams later in the year.

Parel Vallei, one of the newcomers from the Western Cape, makes their bow with an outing against a dangerous Mzwandile Mali XV side. The Eastern Cape team was selected at the Mzwandile Mali Rugby Festival in 2024 and has already travelled across the pond to test the strength of clubs in England. Melkbosstrand, another side from down south, will tackle the Mzawandile Magic.

The hosts, Paul Roos Gimnasium, ranked number one in South Africa in 2024, will get their challenge underway against the powerhouse Bere from Hoërskool Garsfontein. Both sides have clean records after two outings and will have to put it all on the line in a match that promises fireworks up front, especially with Paul Roos’ old-boy and Springbok lock, Andries Bekker, assisting with coaching the Bere’s lineout this year.

Paul Roos will take on Noordheuwel in the main match on the final day, which will also feature a rematch in the curtain-raiser between Grey College and  Jeppe High School for Boys, who sent shock waves through schoolboy rugby last season when they beat the Bloemfontein powerhouse at the festival. Garsfontein, meanwhile, will test themselves against Stellenberg‘s Jade Brigade in their second match.

The first day’s action will be highlighted by a high-intensity clash between Paarl Gimnasium and King Edward VII School (KES), which will see Gim’s robust offence challenged by a strong defensive outfit.

The penultimate day will also feature a scrumptious showdown between two of the countries’ big dogs, Hoër Jongeskool Paarl (Boishaai), and their old foe, Affies. It will be the first of Affies’ big clashes with the big four, which also includes Grey College, Paul Roos and Paarl Gimnasium.

In a match highlighted by massive tackles and rollicking runs, a double by Kuhle Shitlhangu secured an away victory of 37-28 for Jeppe High School for Boys over King Edward VII School in the first of their annual two derbies.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

Shitlhango was the first to dot down for Jeppe. Then, towards the end of the game, he stormed down an attempted drop goal from the Reds’ flyhalf, Andrew Jackson, right on the hooter, gathered the ball, and ran almost the length of the field to score his second and make it 1-0 in favour of Jeppe in the first of their two King Price Derby Series matches against KES this year.

Both sides’ physicality seemed to have been ratcheted up a notch from their outings last week, which would’ve been expected given the importance of getting one over an old foe.

Shitlhangu, besides dotting down twice, filled the role of openside flanker expertly, making life difficult for the home side, which earned him the accolade of Man of the Match.

Besides him, Jeppe lock, Glodi Tshipamba, threw his body around all over the park. He dominated in the lineouts too, causing the home side headaches.

The Reds, were impressive with their steadfast defence, often making double hits, which stopped the visitors in their tracks. That ferocious defence kept them in the contest for the entire 70 minutes.

In the second half, though, Jeppe found their stride and their outside backs, especially, left-wing, Lethabo Mashao, revelled in the space created by some slick handling and interactive play between the backs and the forwards, which brought about a turning point in the game.

The home side never stopped taking it to the visitor, however. Scrumhalf and vice-captain, Regan McGurk, shone. His service behind the KES pack was immaculate, but his efforts on defence and at rucks stole the show as he pulled off crucial turnovers at critical junctures

The battle between the kickers, Nehemia Hollenbach and Indi Mbonsiswa, was, as expected, a battle within a battle. Unfortunately for the Reds, Hollenbach came out on top this time, slotting six kicks at goal, including three conversions and three penalties. Mbonsiswa wasn’t far behind, succeeding with two conversions and three penalties of his own to contribute 13 points to the Red Army’s tally.
