  • Lions, Valke, and Griquas run rampant on final day of Grant Khomo Week

GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – 17 JUNE: Lions during the match between Lions and Boland on day 1 of the u16 Grant Khomo Week at Grey High School on 17 June 2024, in Gqeberha, South Africa. Photo: Michael Sheehan/Gallo Images.

The Golden Lions, Valke and Griquas all put on master classes in running rugby, with each putting up 50 or more points, in their third and final matches of the Grant Khomo Week in Gqeberha on Friday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools

The Golden Lions kicked off the final day’s action on Kolisi Field with a thumping 66-24 victory over Border.

Their impressive outside centre, Juandré Ehlers, once again showed his immense power with the ball in hand.

He tormented the Border defenders with his powerful runs in the midfield, and twice broke through to make the dive for five.

The platform for the victory was laid by the Lions’ pack. Their rampaging driving mauls and dominance at the set pieces proved too much to handle for Border. Hooker Jeandre van der Merwe and Armand van Eck, in the number eight jumper, led the onslaught, with both going over for two tries each.

The Lions’ backline appeared to click for the first time in the week. They enjoyed good quality ball and acres of space, thanks to the dominance of their forwards.

Jaydon Viljoen, at flyhalf, sharply exploited any chinks in Border’s defences. His ability to spot an opportunity in the blink of an eye meant that Ehlers and the rest of the outside backs could smile for the cameras as they dived over the line.

The Valke were equally impressive against Border Country Districts. Valke captain Luca du Plooy led by example from the back of the scrum. He and his men brushed aside the Border boys to claim a 60-15 victory on Poyt Field. The no. 8, along with lock Matthew van Deventer, caused the Border CD defenders headaches, and they dotted down twice each.

They, however, weren’t the only ones to shine. Thanks to the dominance of their pack, fullback Duwayne Zeekoei and right-wing Mongezi Mthizi also signed off the week on a high note. Both showed immaculate footwork and loads of pace to also equally divide four tries between them. This meant that eight of the Valke’s 10 tries were scored by just four players.

Inside centre Vaughn Steynvaart, who had a good tournament with the boot, was also a try scorer on this occasion.

Flyhalf Zian Ueckerman rounded off a complete team performance with a contribution of 13 points, which included slotting four conversions and also scoring his side’s tenth and last try.

Griquas gave the Limpopo Blue Bulls a bloody nose as they, too – led by a double from utility back, Rivaldo Ruiter – put a half-century on the board in a big 50-12 victory.

One can’t help but wonder what was said at half-time by the Griquas’ coaching staff, but it must’ve been something truly inspirational. They trailed 7-12 at the break, but in the second stanza the side from the Northern Cape put the pedal to the metal and scored 43 unanswered points.

Just like in many other matches, the game opened up when Griquas let the ball do the work. Pinpoint execution and excellent finishing by the Griquas’ outside backs proved too be too much for the men from Limpopo.

  • George hat-trick not enough as WP overcomes Bulls to claim top spot

GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – Photo: Michael Sheehan/Gallo Images.

Despite a hat-trick of tries by the Blue Bulls’ exciting left wing, Yuvrah George, Western Province managed to hold onto their half-time lead and dethrone the defending champions in the unofficial main match of the 2024 Grant Khomo Week, winning 31-22.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools

George was also the only Bulls’ player to cross Province’s try line, which underlined just how special his performance was.

The speedster from Hoërskool Garsfontein, in Pretoria, was the tournament’s leading try-scorer. He also finished second on the top points’ scorers’ list, which makes him a leading contender for the Player of the Tournament Award.

However, a two-try salvo through flyer, Dayyaan Conrad, and captain and hooker, Kwaza Combinca, minutes apart, after the break, saw Western Province stretch their half-time lead from 19-15 to 31-15.

The Capetonians also found an unlikely hero in their eighth-man, Ruan Lindeque. Earlier in the week, he had run out for the Western Province XV. On Friday, though, he took up his place at the back of the scrum in the penultimate match of the week.

Lindeque impressed with his high work rate and was rewarded with a try shortly before the half-time whistle, which also put Province into the lead.

Alongside him, openside flank, Christiaan le Roux, caused havoc at ruck time, resulting in the Bulls dealing with scrappy ball on numerous occasions. His hard work in the trenches earned him the Player of the Match award.

In the curtain raiser, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks spoiled the high-flying South Western Districts’ party through a Lwandle Mkhize try after the hooter. The left-wing went over beneath the uprights, which gave Lwazi Mbede an easy conversion, and saw the Sharks to a 20-19 victory.

South Western Districts’ captain, Jacobus de Villiers, who starred throughout the week, showed his prowess on attack and defence one last time, lighting up Kolisi Field with his storming runs and massive hits.

Inside centre William Stevens and his trusty boot helped Eastern Province claim a narrow 36-33 victory over the Western Province XV in their final outing. It was the hosts’ first win of the week and also meant that the Western Province second stringers would return home winless

Free State hit their straps in their final match against Boland. They gave the ball a lot of air and continuously attacked space, which gave Unathi Ntuli an opportunity to show off his speed and footwork. He crossed for an impressive double as the Free Staters ran out 33-15 winners.

  • De Villiers and SWD stun WP XV with exceptional second half

GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA – 17 JUNE: Kean Lourens of the Golden Lions during the match between Lions and Boland on day 1 of the U16 Grant Khomo Week at Grey High School on 17 June 2024 in Gqeberha, South Africa. Photo: Michael Sheehan/Gallo Images.

South Western Districts stunned the Western Province XV and, seemingly, most of the spectators, with a stunning fightback in the second half of their Grant Khomo Week showdown in Gqeberha on Wednesday.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools

After being 0-22 down with only a couple of minutes left in the first half, SWD started to hit their straps by giving the ball, in extremely windy conditions, as much air as possible.

That approach opened up space for them to exploit, which they did well. Captain and no. 8, Jacobus de Villiers, just as he had on the first day, led from the front.

The Province XV struggled to find any answers to his physicality as he bashed his way over the advantage line countless times. De Villiers also broke through to score a try, which put his team within touching distance of victory. Alongside him, the replacement flank, Zay-winn Januarie, put in a massive shift in support of his captain.

Cayden Snyman stood out for the WP XV. Playing at inside centre, he worked well in space out wide and twice opened up the SWD defence to cross for tries. His contribution of 10 points was one of the main reasons why the side from the Western Cape took early charge of the contest.

With seconds left on the clock, and the scoreboard reading 31-29 in favour of the Western Province XV, a good passage of play from SWD finally paid off as utility back, De Andre Meintjies, was put into space, and he rounded off in the corner to seal a barely believable and very special victory for his side.

Border showed signs of real class, especially in their backline, in an 11-point win over the Griffons. Aaron James, at inside centre, was phenomenal on defence and attack.

James upset the Griffons’ attempts at continuity, laying down the law with his big hits, and a piece of individual brilliance from the no.12 also brought him a fantastic try, much to the delight of the crowd.

Dirkie Lochner, Namibia’s scrumhalf, and hooker Marius de Villiers, both dived over twice in their 31-7 win over Border Country Districts. Their try scoring exploits wouldn’t have been possible without a wonderful performance from the Namibian pack, which laid a solid foundation for their dangerous backline to get going.

A hard-fought 19-13 victory in Gqeberha on Wednesday over the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks ensured that Western Province would have a shot at redemption.

Relive all the action on SuperSport Schools

As a result of that win, Province will face the defending champions, the Blue Bulls, in the unofficial main match of the 2024 Grant Khomo Week on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Bulls beat Boland 37-28 to secure their place in the Friday’s feature game after 60 minutes of outstanding running rugby.

The fullbacks stole the show in the 65-point thriller. The Bulls’ Drewyn Baron set a cold and windy Kolisi Field alight with his exhilarating ability to beat defenders. He dotted down twice, with his five-pointer just before the half-time break proving to be a turning point for the Light Blues.

Boland’s Anwill Josh Jacobs, impressed again, doing exactly what he had done when the Bolanders beat the Lions on day one. He gave the Boland backline a fantastic cutting edge and caused headaches for the Bulls throughout the contest. Just like his opposite number, Baron, he grabbed a double, with his second coming as a result of his astute reading of the defence. It ended beneath the uprights.

Bulls’ lock Martin van Niekerk earned himself a pat on the back. His motor ran at full bore throughout the game, with his work rate and willingness to put his body on the line helping to provide quality ball for the Light Blues’ backs to attack a tiring Boland defence.

Province, meanwhile, had to deal with a solid and stubborn Sharks’ defence. That, however, did not stop the men in the blue-and-white-striped jerseys from piling on the pressure, with wave after relentless wave of attacks.

Tiaan Basson, the Capetonians’ outside centre was prominent. He kept the Sharks’ defenders busy with his physical runs in the midfield.

Province’s flying wing, Tyrece Gereke, also challenged the boys in black and white. He was responsible for one of his side’s three tries, which proved to be a pivotal score in a very physical match.

Despite going down, the Sharks can hold their heads up high. Tighthead prop Ben Coetzee turned in an impressive performance. The burly front-rower put on a show, demonstrating that props in modern-day schoolboy structures are capable of doing almost anything.

The Gauteng Lions bagged their first win of the tournament, claiming a tightly contested 19-12 win over the hosts, Eastern Province.

Anthony Viljoen, the Lions’ inside centre, crossed the whitewash for two crucial tries, with his second proving to be the difference between the sides.

His match-up with Eastern Province’s outside centre, Erin Nelson, had the crowd going, with both challenging the other throughout the duration of the match.

Griquas overcame the Leopards, beating the side from the North West 19-7 in a tough and physical battle.

Eighthman Azingce Cofa, left wing Ashwin Muller, and inside centre Thabo Thole, ran in tries for the Northern Cape side. De Wet Grobler, the Leopards’ blindside flank, impressed with his physicality and scored his team’s only try.

The Blue Bulls are on track to make the main match of the Grant Khomo Week for a second consecutive year, but Boland might have other plans.

The side from Northern Gauteng kicked off their campaign in exciting fashion against a spirited Western Province XV on Monday, the first day of the tournament, securing a nail-biting 26-24 win, which hands them the chance to make it through to face either Western Province or The Sharks in the prestigious main match on the final day.

The light blues, however, will first need to get past a Boland side which has upsets on its mind.

In their first outing, the Bolanders took down Gauteng’s Lions, exhibiting some exciting play on offence and a determined defence.

Province, also, faces a big challenge when they take on the team from KwaZulu-Natal, who impressed in their opening encounter. The boys in black and white made a major statement by beating last year’s runners-up, the Free State, 26-20.

Their prowess on attack begs the question: can Province hold out for the entire 60 minutes?

Both the Western Province and Eastern Province sides will be nursing some sore bodies after their first taste of u16 Grant Khomo Week action.

Eastern Province certainly made their next two opponents sit up and take notice after the hosts, despite suffering a 24-38 defeat to Western Province on Monday, impressed in the main match of day one.

In the first half, especially, the home side flexed their muscles and made a statement that they were here to compete.

Their outside centre, Erin Nelson, showed why he wears the no. 13 jersey. His ability to attack the smallest of gaps had the side from the Western Cape grasping for air twice as he broke through to cross the whitewash for a well-deserved double.

Up front, there was none better than the hardworking lock, Joshua van Zyl. He put his body on the line time and time again, racking up a huge tackle count.

WP hit their straps in the second half, however, and demonstrated the importance of being clinical in the opposition’s 22-metre area. Tiaan Basson, Province’s outside centre, turned the tables to put Nelson under loads of pressure with his intimidating runs in the midfield.

Displaying better continuity, Western Province turned the screws tighter. Their tighthead prop, Lehan Barnard hammered the EP defence, which finally gave way, allowing him to score a try he’ll, no doubt, be talking about for quite a while.

Their workhorse at eighth-man Hendrik Goosen and twinkle-toed utility back Tevez Cupido added tries to break open a very tight contest and see the visitors to a comfortable victory.

Western Province’s second stringers came close to causing a major upset of the unofficial defending champions, the Blue Bulls. Led by their powerful prop Qiraan Hermanus, they made life tough for the light blues from up north.

Hermanus lit the fire among the big men up front with his burly carries. Juan Visagie, their no. 8, followed suit. Their hard work was rewarded with tries.

It was, however, the light blues’ left wing, Yavrah George, who stole the show. George, looking like a young Kurt-Lee Arendse, danced his way through WP’s defence on two occasions.

Complementing George’s remarkable performance, Vihan Pretorius, the Blue Bulls’ replacement flyhalf, kept the scoreboard ticking, slotting three penalties and a conversion, which ultimately proved enough for the northern powerhouse.

A double from South Western Districts‘ Adrian Smith helped the Eagles bag an important 26-6 victory over Namibia.

If there was a theme on the day, it was of the no. 8s scoring tries and Jacobus de Villiers joined the rest of the men who play at the back of the scum, finding his way onto the scoresheet, too.

The Leopards wasted no time in making their voices heard. The side from the North West Province ran in six tries to bag the biggest victory of the day, thumping the Limpopo Blue Bulls 40-7.

The foundation for their victory was laid by their pack, which allowed their dangerous backline to give the ball some air and expose loads of space at the back.

Tighthead prop, Christo Minnie, stole the show with his energetic play, even bulldozing over for one of his side’s six tries. His flyhalf, who hails from Hoërskool Wesvalia, Wian du Preez, was in good form off the kicking tee, nailing five conversions.

Monday, 17 June 2024, will be a day that the Boland u16 Grant Khomo side and its coaches will remember for a long time.

Relive all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

The side from the Western Cape caused the first upset of this year’s tournament, stunning the Golden Lions with a memorable 21-16 victory in the second match of the first day on Grey High School‘s Kolisi Field, in Gqeberha.

Their five-point victory was set up by an exciting and dominant first half. Early on, the Bolanders hit their straps, especially their speedsters at the back.

Darren Makeza, the Bolanders’ fleet-footed left wing, broke through early to score the first try of the contest. He, along with the fullback, Anwill Josh, made life difficult for the Gauteng side, keeping them guessing when he joined the attack.

With Boland running rampant, the Lions were continually turned and forced to scramble on defence.

Lock Nieken Lubbe capitalised on this, storming up the field to cross the whitewash for his side’s second try. While Boland looked energetic and enterprising, the Lions appeared flat-footed, and they struggled to create continuity.

They found a way back into the game, however, when their burly outside centre Juandré Ehlers took advantage of some lazy midfield defence to go over for his side’s only try.

Anthony Viljoen kept the side from up north within touching distance with a near-perfect kicking performance, which included slotting three penalties and converting Ehlers’ five-pointer.

In a proper arm wrestle, two tries in the space of five minutes, shortly before the final whistle, saw the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks down Free State.

Leading by 10 points at the break (17-7), the Free Staters kicked off the second half as firm favourites to bag a win, but a determined performance from no. 8 Nhlandhla Ndlovu and the Sharks’ pack swung the momentum in favour of the KwaZulu-Natalians.

Inside centre Olwethu Kosani’s five-pointer proved to be the deciding score as the KZN boys secured a 26-20 victory.

The Free Staters were, mostly, excellent, but they struggled to round off their good work. Flyhalf, O’Ryan Kleyn was fantastic. Not only did he kick well at goal, but he impressed on the attack and his scramble defence was superb, saving his side on numerous occasions.

A man-of-the-match performance by Hoërskool Nelspruit and Pumas’ eighth-man, Vian Louw, helped the side from Mpumalanga capture their first victory of the tournament as they powered their way to a handsome 39-14 win over Griquas. Louw contributed a try and also slotted two conversions to contribute nine points to his team’s total.

Pumas’ outside centre Nhlakanipho Mahlangu was, without a doubt, another contender for the man of the match award. He kept the Griquas midfield busy with his bullocking runs and twice broke through for tries.
