Voorlangs beskik Marais Viljoen oor ‘n groot dog beweeglike pak.

Hoërskool Pietersburg verwelkom Hoërskool Montana in Limpopo se hoofstad.

Morné Prinsloo was die Woeries se beste bouler.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom: 151 (Louis van Wyk 59, Diaan van der Merwe 27; Jaydon Blom 3/33, Marcus Bakker 2/15, Wian Ruthven 2/24, Franco Schmidt 2/36). Hoërskool Waterkloof: 157/4 (Wian Ruthven 83, Divan Behrens 23, Beukes van den Berg 23; Olefa Padi 2/23). Waterkloof wen met ses paaltjies.

Hoërskool Eldoraigne: 224 (Marinus Langerman 73, Cameron Welsh 31, Ryno Redelinghuys 30, Ryno Mulder 24; Morne Prinsloo 3/47, Charl Prinsloo 2/35); Hoërskool Centurion: 167 (Charl Prinsloo 55, Anton Stassen 34, Morné Prinsloo 27; Ruhan Oliphant 3/33, MJ Buitenbach 2/19, Cameron Welsh 2/38). Eldoraigne wen met 57 lopies.

  • Helpmekaar down Kearsney to finish ISCF on a high

On the final day of the Independent School’s Cricket Festival, in Pretoria, teams were presented with an opportunity to test their skills in the T20 format.

Helpmekaar Kollege eagerly accepted Sunday’s assignment and signed off an impressive week with a convincing win over a strong Kearsney College side.

Hannu Marais put the Helpies on the front foot early. Batting at three, he applied himself well and contributed his side’s highest score of 43 runs.

The in-form Anrich Liebenberg continued on his merry way, adding a well-played 37 runs, while his opening partner, Kyle Swanepoel, made 32.

The biggest blows were, however, struck by the Helpmekaar bowlers. Henricus Meyer ripped the heart out of the Kearsney lineup, getting rid of four batsmen for just 12 runs, while Liebenberg backed up his good performance with the willow, snatching 2/13.

Kearsney’s captain, Ross Coetzee, led from the front in the KwaZulu-Natal’s side losing cause. He was their most successful bowler with two wickets for 23 runs. He also made 20, second only to Keegan de Jager’s 23.

Hilton College also finished on a positive note. They made light work of the St George’s College (Harare) batting lineup, limiting them to just 77/8. David Hill (2/13) and Luke Campbell (2/19) both impressed with good bowling performances, sharing four wickets between them.

Robert Burman, then, put the St George’s bowlers to the sword, breaking the backbone of the chase with an unbeaten 38 runs, to lead his side to a comfortable nine-wicket victory.

Bishops sealed an unbeaten festival with a hard-fought 23-run victory over Cornwall Hill College.

Thaafier Japhta (29) played a crucial knock, helping the Capetonians out of a spot of bother after a few wickets had gone down early. Alex Vintcent (30) and Calum Daniels (26*) made important contributions, too, which helped Bishops to a competitive total of 144/8 from their 20 overs.

Lhuan-dré Pretorius demonstrated his all-round abilities for Cornwall Hill once more. He spun a web around the Bishops’ top-order, opening the bowling with his elusive off-spin and claiming two wickets for 17 runs. With the bat, he made 19 runs – bettered only by Amogelang Tshoagong’s unbeaten 23 – before falling victim to the impressive Waco Bassick (1/25).

The hosts, St Alban’s College, bounced back well after Saturday’s defeat against Michaelhouse. Patrick Weir amazed with his stroke-making, smashing the Woodridge College bowlers all around the park, as he plundered 79 runs. Kyle Block, playing the second fiddle to the aggressive Weir, also notched a half-century, playing well for his unbeaten 54 runs.

Luke Ward (3/12) and Tim Garnett (3/17), then, shone with the ball. The pair claimed a combined six wickets while yielding only 29 runs. They had Woodridge under immense pressure right from the get-go and the Eastern Cape side mustered only 62 all out.

The Titans XI produced another impressive performance, inflicting a defeat on Kingswood College. With contributions here and there, up and down the order, led by Magaswa (33) and Teko Modiba (29), the Titans posted a reasonable total of 122/9.

It was their bowlers, however, who swung the momentum of the game firmly in the Pretoria-based side’s favour. Samukelo Mojela did the bulk of the damage, knocking over three wickets for 27 runs, while Mohammed Barabat also excelled, picking up 2/12.

Kingswood’s David Loudon fought a lone battle. He was, by far, his side’s best performer on the day. The all-rounder sent four opposition batsmen back to the pavilion, conceding only 15 runs. He was also the only one to produce an innings of any significance, making 38 runs, as Kingswood came up 24 runs short of their opposition.

    Summarised scorecards

Helpmekaar Kollege 139/5 (Hannu Marais 43, Anrich Liebenberg 37, Kyle Swanepoel 32; Ross Coetzee 2/23, Ryan Browning 2/33); Kearsney College 104/10 (Keegan de Jager 23, Ross Coetzee 20; Henricus Meyer 4/12, Anrich Liebenberg 2/13) Helpmekaar Kollege won by 35 runs.

St George’s College (Harare) 77/8 (Takudzwa Mangena 27; David Hill 2/13, Luke Campbell 2/19); Hilton College 78/1 (Robert Burman 38*; Munotido Ndorah 1/20). Hilton College won by nine wickets.

St Alban’s College 168/4 (Patrick Weir 79, Kyle Block 54*; Randy Syce 1/24); Woodridge College 62 (Zche-Keane Killian 18, Luke Ward 3/12, Tim Garnett 3/17). St Alban’s College won by 106 runs.

Titans Invitation XI 122/9 (Magaswa 33, Teko Modiba 29; David Loudon 4/15); Kingswood College 98 (David Loudon 38; Samukelo Mojela 3/27, Mohammed Barabat 2/12, Neylo Senna 2/12). Titans Invitation XI won by 24 runs.

  • Michaelhouse batsmen overpower St Alban’s at ISCF

Michael Spencer led the way for Michaelhouse, with 75 runs at the top of the order, as they put the hosts, St Alban’s College, to the sword in a 50-over match at the Independent Schools Cricket Festival on Saturday.

He received good backing from Ethan Muir (57) and Dylan Hewlett (56), while his opening partner, West Mitchell-Innes weighed in with 41, which led to Michaelhouse posting an imposing 325/9.

Ross Moller then continued his fine bowling form, spearheading the ‘House attack with three wickets for 18 runs, while Cival Rugbar later claimed 3/17.

For the hosts, Christiaan Visage, shone with the bat in a losing cause, making 56 runs from 96 balls. Kyle Block also tried valiantly, making 48. Despite the duo’s efforts, St Alban’s still fell a massive 173 runs short of the victory target.

Helpmekaar Kollege secured a convincing victory over St George’s College, comfortably beating the Zimbabweans by seven wickets.

Henricus Meyer’s return to form continued as the top-order batsman scored a blistering unbeaten 70 runs. He also contributed 2/31 with the ball. Henno Steyn was, however, the pick of the Helpie bowlers, knocking over two batsmen for just eight runs.

For the visitors from Harare, Takudzwa Mangena, with a mature 55 runs from 108 deliveries, stood out.

Another strong batting performance by Lhuan-dre Pretorius (59) helped Cornwall Hill College secure a hard-fought 24-run victory over St John’s College (Harare).

Pretorius and Tsepo Molete contributed 59 runs each, while the impressive Lethabo Phahlomohlaka maintained his run of fine form with 55 runs from 74 balls.

Yuveerin Govender was the Pretoria side’s best bowler, removing five of the Harare school’s batsmen at a cost of 40 runs. Trent Hardie supported him well, claiming two wickets for 27 runs.

  • Bishops continues dominance, West leads St David’s to victory over Hilton

Bishops continues dominance, West leads St David’s to victory over Hilton

Bishops Diocesan College continued their dominant run in 2024 by beating St Stithians in a low-scoring match by 10 runs on Friday at the Independent Schools Cricket Festival in Pretoria.

The Capetonians’ Alex Vintcent was their standout with the bat, top scoring with a mature 44 runs from 71 deliveries, which helped his team reach 185/7 from their 50 overs. Opening batsman Kashief Joseph demonstrated his batting prowess once again, improving his tally for the year by another 39 runs.

Saints’ South African u19 representative, Richard Seletswane, held up Bishops’ push for victory, showing great composure as he compiled 59 runs from 123 deliveries. Unfortunately for Seletswane, he didn’t receive any significant support, although Cayden Sunker did his bit, making 22.

Waco Bassick delivered another strong performance with the ball, putting Saints under early pressure and finishing with 3/37. Tiaan Louw (2/35) and Peyton Lee (2/39) supported him well with four wickets between them.

Joshua Meyer (2/23) was the pick of the Saints’ bowlers. Cayden Sunker (2/34) and Pranav Raichetti (2/37) also removed two Bishops’ batsmen each but, when St Stithians batted, they found the Bishops’ bowling a tough challenge.

Captain Matthew West led St David’s Marist Inanda to a 37-run victory over Hilton College, making a masterful 94 runs from 136 balls before he was run out.

He then backed up his fine batting performance by taking three wickets while yielding only 27 runs. Jason Rowles, however, was the pick of the St David’s bowlers, bagging figures of four wickets for just 20 runs.

Luke Campbell led the Hilton attack, claiming his side’s best figures of three wickets for 25 runs, while Natenzi Denega continued his good rhythm from day one, knocking over 3/38.

Robert Burman shone with the bat for Hilton, scoring a mature 58 runs from 92 runs, while James Ogilby battled manfully, scoring a well-played 47 runs.

Henricus Meyer’s return to form was a sight to behold as Helpmekaar thumped the Titans Invitation team by a massive margin of 140 runs.

Meyer cracked an unbeaten 130 and picked up 2/15 with the ball, while Anrich Liebenberg also showed his class, backing up Meyer with 58 runs, and producing Helpmekaar’s best bowling figures of 2/7.

Michaelhouse made light work of St George’s College, from Harare. Murray Hall-Jones led a batting onslaught with an unbeaten 82 runs, while Ethan Muir made 72 runs from 99 balls at the top of the order as ‘House posted 260/6.

Michaelhouse’s impressive spin twins, Cameron Strudwick (3/7) and Jean-Luc Rey (3/12) then tore the heart from the St George’s batting line-up as the Zimbabwean’s spluttered to 49 all out. The opening pair, Ross Moller (2/4) and Luke Mitchell (2/10), supported their spinners well.

Kingswood College bounced back from a loss on the opening day with an impressive five-wicket victory over a struggling Uplands College side.

David Louden laid down the law, dominating the Uplands’ batsmen to return figures of five wickets for just 18 runs. Matt Loon (3/22) ensured Louden’s wasn’t a solo effort.

Under a little pressure, Christopher Zimmerman kept his composure and hit an unbeaten 31 runs to see the side from Grahamstown over the line in the 19th over.

The bowlers made a massive statement by delivering stellar performances on Thursday, the first day of the Independent Schools Cricket Festival.

Bishops‘ opening bowler Waco Bassick tore through the Michaelhouse top order to claim a five-for. His magical opening spell sent five Michaelhouse batsmen back to the pavilion while yielding only 15 runs from his six overs.

His excellent bowling performance backed up his mature knock of 48 runs from 57 balls at a critical time in Bishops’ innings.

Kashief Joseph, the impressive Bishops’ opening batsman, notched up his first half-century of the festival, top scoring with 59 runs from 93 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Michaelhouse’s young left-arm off-spin bowler, Jean-Luc Rey, also delivered a stellar performance. He pulled it back nicely in the middle overs, snaring the first five-for of the festival, 5/43. He was supported well by Ross Moller, who claimed two Bishops’ scalps for 35 runs.

St Andrew’s College star, William Beamish, led the side from Grahamstown to a hard-fought three-wicket victory over a young Hilton College side. He struck a mature 44 runs from 95 balls before showing impressive sportsmanship by walking before being given out, caught off the bowling of Simon Steyn.

Beamish also impressed with the ball, claiming 2/24. However, Roman van Zyl did the bulk of the damage, bagging four wickets for 32 runs.

Natenzi Denenga led the way for Hilton. Coming back from an injury, which kept him sidelined for most of 2024, the bowling all-rounder top scored with 37 runs and claimed two wickets for 24 runs.

Liam Basch (4/22) and Christiaan Visage (4/28) directed the hosts, St Alban’s, to a comfortable nine-wicket victory over St George’s College of Harare. The pair combined for eight wickets, which led to the visitors struggling to only 119 all out.

An unbeaten 65 from Zack Richardson and 41 not out from Patrick Weir then steered the home team to victory in the 20th over.

Lhuan-dré Pretorius lived up to his vaunted reputation by seeing Cornwall Hill College to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Clifton College.

He struck an impressive and unbeaten 85, in a more subdued manner than usual, taking 120 deliveries for his runs. Lethabo Phahlamohlaka supported him well, with an undefeated 34 runs coming from his bat.

Their good batting performance was backed up by some good bowling from Mohale Pitso, who claimed three wickets for 33 runs. Pretorius, meanwhile, showed off his all-round ability by picking up 2/17 from 10 overs.

Helpmekaar Kollege clawed their way to a narrow three-wicket victory over St John’s College (Harare). Anrich Liebenberg (3/24) and Henricus Meyer (2/34) limited the visitors from Zimbabwe to only 112 all out.

Tyde Stirrup‘s 30 runs, supported by Kian Blignaut‘s 20 runs, were the Rams’ top scores. Blignaut carried over his confident batting performance into his bowling, leading the touring side’s fightback with an impressive spell of 2/25.

Kyle Swanepoel, however, kept his composure, matching Cornwall Hill’s Pretorius by also starting and ending his team’s batting effort. His unbeaten 76 runs from 124 deliveries was the decisive innings that the Johannesburg school needed to get over the line.

With the excitement building ahead of the Independent Schools Cricket Festival, to be hosted by St Alban’s College in Pretoria, it seems as if bowlers could have a hard time when they come up against some of the best batsmen in the country.

Adnaan Lagadien, arguably South Africa’s leading batsman at school level thus far in the 2023/24 season, leads an impressive Bishops‘ batting line-up, alongside his excellent opening partner, Kashief Joseph.

Lagadien has been in astonishing form and will surely enjoy the conditions in Pretoria, which are usually good for batting.

In January, Lagadien scored the first and only double-century (218*) of 2024 thus far in his side’s opening game against Hilton College at the Peninsula Cricket Festival. Since then, he’s produced many more superb performances, including another unbeaten ton (112*) in Bishops’ win over Rondebosch in the annual BishBosch T20.

Joe MacRobert, St John’s College‘s premier batsman, will be another one to keep an eye on. He is also in scintillating form and has the ability to tear opposing bowling attacks to shreds with his aggressive striking and high rate of scoring.

Macrobert has been, by far, the Johannesburg-based side’s leading run-getter in 2024 and boasts an impressive 269 runs at an average of 67.25 in his last four appearances.

That tally includes two half-centuries and a masterful 106 runs against Noordheuwel in the Johnny Waite T20 competition.

Also in the mix is another classy top-order batsman. St Stithians‘ captain Emile Odendaal has led the way for the side from Sandton and is his team’s leading run scorer. What impresses most about Odendaal is the mature manner he has of going about his batting.

Usually, he starts slowly, but he possesses an invaluable ability to put his foot on the gas at exactly the right moment to take the game away from Saints’ opponents. One of his best innings this season was an outstanding 112 against Jeppe High School for Boys in a declaration match at the end of January.

Kearsney College all-rounder Ross Coetzee will also seek to stamp his authority on the festival as one of the best talents among South Africa’s independent schools.

Coetzee also dons the captain’s armband for the side from KwaZulu-Natal. His abilities with the bat at the top of the order, as a clean and powerful striker of the ball, provide a stable base for the Kearsney batting lineup.

His contributions with the ball, as a dangerous off-spin bowler, also play an integral part in a balanced bowling attack.

With an established record of success, which included scoring 739 runs and taking 59 wickets in 2023, Coetzee is clearly one of the top all-rounders in the country, and he is already on course to comfortably eclipse his run-scoring feats of last year. One of his better batting efforts came in Kearsney’s only loss of 2024, when he scored 107 against Durban High School. But there have been many more impactful knocks.

St David’s Marist Inanda‘s opponents will have their hands full when coming up against the Sandton-based side’s impressive batting line-up. Leading the way will be the talented Armaan Manack.

Opening the batting, Manack has put many bowling lineups to the sword during the course of the 2023/24 season and he enters the festival in red-hot form, having already scored two centuries this year.

His standout performance was an astonishing 174 runs in a 50-over clash against St Alban’s College in early February. Manack’s fluent batting style and ability to score at a rapid pace are his best attributes.

Together with his brother, Morteza, and captain, Matthew West, St David’s possesses a trio of batsmen with the ability to put any bowling attack under severe stress.

  • Independent Schools Festival 2024-Fixtures

The annual Independent Schools Cricket Festival, which takes place at St Alban’s College from 22 to 25 February, promises to dish up a spectacle of exciting cricket as some of South Africa’s leading talents test themselves against opposition from all around the country.

Many of the country’s top schools’ cricket teams will be in action in Pretoria, where the first three days of competition will be over 50 overs, and the final day, Sunday, 25 February, will feature a T20 format.

The hosts start off with a bit of an unknown challenge when they take on St George’s College. The Zimbabweans are joined at the Festival by their Harare rivals, St John’s College, who go up against Helpmekaar Kollege in their opener.

The high-quality field includes a powerful Gauteng contingent made up of St Alban’s, St John’s, St Stithians, St Benedict’s, Helpmekaar, Cornwall Hill and St David’s.

Then, there is also the Titans Invitational side, which brings together players from lesser-known cricket-playing schools to give them an opportunity to test themselves against top opposition. They face a tough task, taking on St Stithians, Helpmekaar, St Benedict’s and Kingswood.

The KZN flag will be flown by Kearsney, Clifton College, Hilton College and Michaelhouse, with Kearsney, so far, the best performing of the schools in the province this season.

Bishops, widely regarded as the number one team in South Africa at present, represents the Western Cape, and their game against St Stithians on Friday – with Saints now including their SA u19 stars Richard Seletswane, and Player of the u19 Cricket World Cup, Kwena Maphaka – should be a cracker.

St Andrew’s College, Kingswood, and Woodridge carry the hopes of the Eastern Cape. St Andrew’s School is the only team from the Free State, and Uplands College is the only side from Mpumalanga.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Midstream College: 222 (Janco van Heerden 46, Maarten Nortje 37, Dian de Villiers 34, Juan Holtzhauzen 27, Ryan Strauss 22; Declan Botes 3/49). Hoërskool Marais Viljoen: 210 (Declan Botes 89, Aldre Huyzers 50, Tiaan Kuhn 28; Janco van Heerden 5/26, Rikus Cilliers 4/44). Midstream College wen met 12 lopies.

Hoërskool Ben Vorster: 61 (Njabulo Maseko 19; Cilliers van der Merwe 5/16, Hanno van Zyl 2/13). Hoërskool Pietersburg: 65/2 (Phillip Weterman 34*; Njabulo Maseko 1/23). Pietersburg wen met agt paaltjies.

Hoërskool Zwartkop: 120 (Vincent Matraiotti 26, Wynand Frylinck 25, Wihan Gelderblom 22; Luan Snyman 4/31, Raiyaan Khan 2/18). Hoërskool Lichtenburg: 104 (Luan Snyman 33, Nelius van Rensburg 22; Zandre van Staden 4/20, Rowan McLaren 2/25). Zwartkop wen met 16 lopies.
