Mauritz Hansen XV bags first victory on Irish tour

TravelandSportThe Mauritz Hansen XV recorded their first victory of their tour through Ireland against St. Munchen’s College at the Garryowen RFC in Limerick. The South Africans won the match comfortably by 47-11 after already building up a handsome lead of 35-6 at the break.

They were scheduled to play Rockwell College in Cork, but they withdrew from the match. St. Munchen’s College stepped in to give the tourists a match. Rockwell College is the defending Munster Senior Cup champions. The tour by Mauritz Hansen XV is organised by Travel and Sport

The touring side’s speedster from Oos-Moot, Terrance Kingsburgh, was a threat on attack. He scored two very good tries showcasing his pace. The side’s performance was more of a team effort than their first match of the tour against Ireland premier school side, Blackrock College from Dublin.

Flyhalf Ronald van Wetering also put on a superb performance behind a dominating pack of forwards. Van Wetering cross kick on attack which led to winger Louis Naude’s try was on of the best tries on the tour.

St. Munchen’s College is the school of current Irish player, Keith Earls, who toured South Africa with the British and Irish Lions in 2009. They also produced Irish internationals as Philip Danaher and Jerry Flannery. Their No. 8, Peter Magliocco, and hooker and captain, Adam Moloney, was their best players in defeat against the Mauritz Hansen XV.

For the tourists their lock Sakkie Liebenberg and flankers Patrick Erasmus and HP van der Walt also produced good performances. Garryowen RFC is the home ground of one of the greatest Irish players ever, Keith Wood.

Mauritz Hansen XV’s biggest test will come on Friday when they will face Munster u20 at the University of Limerick in their final tour match.

Elsewhere in Ireland Arthur Johnson’s XV drew 17-all in their final tour match against Garryowen RFC. The Garryowen RFC’s team was also u20. It is however important to understand how Ireland’s age group system works. If this team from Garryowen played in South Africa it would be called an u19-side.

  • Mauritz Hansen XV not able to break SA’s curse against Blackrock

Mauritz Hansen XV not able to break SA’s curse against Blackrock

TravelandSportThe team selected from the biggest rugbyweek in the world, the Mauritz Hansen-week, faced the daunting task to lock horns with Ireland’s premier rugby nursary, Blackrock College in Dublin. The private school produced Irish legends like Fergus Slattery and Brian O’Driscoll. The Mauritz Hansen XV was selected at the annual rugbyweek in Naboomspruit (Mookgopong) earlier this year.

Blackrock College has the unique bragging rights that their first XV have never lost a match against a South African side. They kept this remarkable record in tact by beating Mauritz Hansen XV by 10-0. The team from Dublin already led by the exact margin after only five minutes of play in the match. Blackrock College drew 17-all against Monument of Krugersdorp earlier this year.

Blackrock College has won the coveted Leinster Senior Cup a record of 68 times since the inaugural tournament was held in 1887. In a tightly contested match the biggest difference between the two teams was the fact that Blackrock College kept their structure, while Mauritz Hansen XV was still finding their feet as a team and the fact that they didn’t succeed in rounding off the chances they got.

The South African side’s fullback, Vuyo Shongwe, was brave under the high ball and he also came the closest in scoring a try losing the ball as he was diving for the corner as he was being tackled. This move was started after a beautiful break by Terrance Kingsburgh.

The most impressive part of the South African performance was their defensive effort. Both Kingsburgh and the flyhalf, Ronald van Wetering, was sent to the sin bin shortly after each other. It must be mentioned that the home side’s John Farley was also yellow carded just before the South Africans was sent to the sin bin.

Winger Georgre Robertson showed that he could be one of the South Africans who will enjoy a successful tour on the field. He managed to find some space a few times on attack while he also showed that he has a proper kicking boot that can prove usefull during the tour. Flanker Jacques Pretorius and prop Frikkie Deysel also produced good performances.

NewsG MauritzHansenFor Blackrock College their midfield pairing of Tommy O’Brien and Liam Turner caused problems for the South African team. The No. 8, Hugo Burke, and flanker, Cadlann Doris, also produced fine performances. Blackrock College will be facing Terenure College on Saturday. The South Africans will be travelling to Cork where they will face Rockwell College.

Rockwell has won the Munster Senior Cup 26 times in their history and are the current defending champions. They produced Irish senior players like Willie Duggan and Gary Halpin.

The principle of Blackrock College, Alan MacGinty’s son AJ MacGinty is currently representing the USA at flyhalf in the World Cup in England. MacGinty sr. quipped that he is the only coach ever to drop Brian O’Driscoll from a rugby team besides Warren Gatland during the post-match reception.

  • Tony Stoops on top against Leinster champions

Tony Stoops on top against Leinster champions

TravelandSportA hat-trick of tries by converted fullback, Byron Qupa, helped to secure a 32-14 victory for the touring Tony Stoops XV against Cistercian College of Rosscrea in Ireland. Qupa was on the wing for Boland at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Stellenbosch earlier this year. The Tony Stoops XV is touring Ireland with Travel and Sport as their agents.

Qupa’s positional play was tested by the Irish fullback, Connor Kelly, in the early exchanges of the match. The speedster from New Orleans however found his feet and troubled the home side’s defence with his evading runs. Kelly was without a doubt his side’s best player as his trusty boot kept the scoreboard ticking over and his tactical kicking kept the South Africans at bay in the first half.

Cistercian College led by 14-13 at the break after two well-worked tries by Simon Magner and Ryan Lomas. The Irish team is the defending Leinster Senior Cup champions. They won the title for the first time in the 2014/15 season. They are coached by South African, Pieter Swanepoel.

No. 8, Sesona Macala, led the physical onslaught by the South Africans. If it wasn’t for Qupa’s hat-trick he would’ve walked away with the man-of-the-match award. He was able to cross the gain line with each of his runs. The prop Didi le Roux and captain and lock, Pieter-Steyl Steenkamp, also produced good performances.

    NewsG TonyStoopsXV

In the backs the midfield pairing of Wesley Carolissen and Keenan Dreyer showed that they can cause havoc on attack if they receive quality possesion. The flyhalf, Delan Jongkind, can also feel more than pleased with his performance on the day.

The Arthur Johnson XV came up against Cork Constitution RFC in their second match of their tour through Ireland. Cork won the match 20-9, but the result was in the balance untill the home side was able to take the match away in the final five minutes.

For Arthur Johnson their fullback, Gerhardt Badenhorst slotted three penalties. Cork’s tries was scored by Liam O’Tool, Eoin Smyth and Connor Healy. Smyth also converted a try and slotted a penalty for his team.

  • WP secure back-to-back U17 Interprovincial Sevens titles

WP secure back-to-back U17 Interprovincial Sevens titles

Western Province on Saturday secured back-to-back South African Rugby Union Under-17 Interprovincial Sevens titles as they defeated SWD 43-7 in the Cup Final at Hoërskool Paarl Gimnasium to complete the competition unbeaten.

The Pumas won the Plate Final, while Free State won the Bowl Final and KwaZulu-Natal the Shield Final.
Western Province booked their place in the final after registering a morale-boosting 29-0 victory against Western Cape neighbours, Boland, in the Cup Semi-final.

Earlier in the day they defeated Griquas 48-0 in the Cup Quarter-final.

SWD, meanwhile, defeated the Blue Bulls 28-14 in the Cup Quarter-final and then beat the Lions 21-15 in the Cup Semi-final to book their spot in the final.

The final day’s play followed on a thrilling opening day with a series of big wins and a few tight games keeping fans entertained throughout the day.

In total 296 tries and 1852 points were scored in the two days of rugby. Western Province’s Damian Willemse was the highest points scorer in the tournament with 42 points, while his team-mate Muller du Plessis’ seven tries were the highest by a player.

The Cup Final was exciting with SWD taking an early 7-0 lead compliments of a stunning try by WP van Heerden. But Western Province bounced back with a try by Wian van Zyl, who found space out wide, allowing them to level the scores. WP’s Vian Fourie added their second try minutes later as he dashed to the tryline and broke through two tackles to score under the posts. This strong start boosted their confidence as Khanya Nkusane added another try on the stroke of halftime thanks to his raw pace, which earned the hosts an encouraging 19-7 lead.

Western Province continued to run riot on attack in the second half with Damian Willemse, Muller du Plessis, Charl Serdyn and Mike Mavovana scoring to increase their try tally to seven for a 43-7 victory. SWD, meanwhile, were forced to feed off the scraps throughout the match, and with no possession with which to launch an attack, they were unable to make their presence felt.

In the Plate Final, the Pumas struck first against the Blue Bulls with a try by JC Pretorius and they added another a few minutes later compliments of Jaco Joubert to take a 12-0 lead. The Blue Bulls tried hard to force their way into the match as the first half progressed, but their efforts were countered by the effective Pumas defence.

The Mpumalanga side continued their dominance after the break with two tries in quick succession to stretch their lead to 24-0. The Bulls hit back a minute before the final whistle with a try by Lincoln Daniels, but this was cancelled out by the Pumas from the kick-off as they ran in yet another try to secure a 29-5 victory and the Plate trophy.

  • Arthur Johnson XV kick-off Irish tour with victory

Arthur Johnson XV kick-off Irish tour with victory

TravelandSportThe Arthur Johnson selection kicked off their tour in Ireland with a 34-8 victory over Gorey RFC. The Arthur Johnson Rugbyweek is held annually in Mossel Bay. The South Africans lead 12-3 at the break.

The score would suggest that it was a convincing victory by Arthur Johnson, but it was a more tightly contested encounter. The South Africans scored three tries in the last ten minutes of the match to take the game away from the Irish team.

The South African got their first practice session in with their warm-up for the match. They planned a session beforehand, but their bus gave some problems which prevented them from getting to know each other a bit better.

The team will surely gel better as the tour progresses, but their coaches Dawie Pretorius and WJ Smit will be more than happy with their team’s opening performance. Their next challenge will be in Cork.

The South African’s eightman, Ruben Terblanche, rounded off a superb performance with a brace of tries. Terblanche made quite a few bone crunching tackles while he also caused problems with his bullocking runs to the home side. The two flankers from Douglas, Le Roux Mulke and Rikus Nel, also performed well.

Nel’s tackle count was impressive, while Mulke was a force to be reckoned with on attack. Everytime he had the ball in hand he managed to get past the gain line. Nel was ever-present and made quite a few telling tackles on cover defense. His work at the breakdown also deserves praise.

The touring side’s physical play was the main catalyst in securing the victory. From the first bone crunching tackle from the kick-off the Irish team was on the back foot. In the backline the two centres, Jeandre Gouws and Andre Jordaan, also produced very good performances. The flyhalf, Ruan du Plooy, was also sharp on attack and slipped past his opposite number a few times during the match.

For Gorey RFC their captain and eigthman, Stanley Hadden, was their best player on the pitch.

    Scorers:

Arthur Johnson XV 34 (12) – Tries: Ruben Terblanche (2), Alex Bam, Tristan Delport, Johann Scholtemeyer, Ruan du Plooy. Conversions: Gerhardt Badenhorst, Jeandre Gouws. Gorey RFC 8 (3) – Try: Shaun Mahan. Conversion: Kian Hadden.

    The teams:

Albei spanne is egter in dieselfde groep geloot.

Groep A: Westelike Provinsie, Pumas, KwaZulu-Natal, Griffons.

Groep B: Suidwestelike Distrikte, Valke, Vrystaat, Oostelike Provinsie.

Groep C: Luiperds, Blou Bulle, Leeus, Grens.

Groep D: Limpopo Blou Bulle, Boland, Namibië, Griekwas.

    Die spanne is:

Blou Bulle: Christian Strydom (Affies), Gerald Lowe (Menlopark), Carl du Plessis, Shaun Williams, Austin Davids, Abner van Reenen, Emilio Adonis (almal Garsfontein), Jaco Labuschagne (Affies), Eddie Ludick (Oos-Moot), Jack Hart, Carl Koch (albei Affies), Lincoln Daniels (Garsfontein). Afrigter: Fielies Coetzee. Spanbestuurder: Heinrich van Jaarsveldt.

Leeus: PJ Jacobs (Monument), Mark Snyman (Helpmekaar), Karel Vahrmeyer (Monument), David Cary (Helpmekaar), Xander Kruger, Reyno Potgieter (albei Monument), Kennedy Mpheku (Parktown Boys’ High), Chuiner van Rooyen, Chris Pieterse (Helpmekaar), Kevin Mpheku (Parktown Boys’ High), Manga Ntimba (Jeppe Boys’ High), Jonathan Rabie (Monument). Afrigters: Pieter Schutte en Jonny Mallet. Spanbestuurder: Stephan Germishuys.

Limpopo Blou Bulle: Stefan Engelbrecht, Muzi Nyakane (albei Ben Vorster), Stefan Nel (Curro Heuwelkruin), Tyron Thomson (Pietersburg), Phil Joubert, MJ Koekemoer (albei Ben Viljoen), Chrizaan Strauss (Frikkie Meyer), Danny Mokobane (Ben Vorster), Ali Sefole (Louis Trichardt), Wernich Kachelhoffer, Mauritz Pretorius (albei Curro Heuwelkruin), Marnus Uys (Piet Potgieter).

Affies, Hoer Jongenskool Paarl, Grey College, Waterkloof, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Paarl Gimnasium, Monument, Outeniqua, EG Jansen, Oakdale Landbou, HTS Middelburg, Boland Landbou, Menlopark, Selborne College, SARU XV, Louis Botha, Diamantveld, Noord-Kaap, Garsfontein, Stellenberg.

SA U18 Sevens clinch gold at Youth Commonwealth Games

The SA Under-18 Sevens team emulated the senior Springbok Sevens when they also clinched the gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa in the early hours of Friday morning.

The South African boys won gold after their 31-20 defeat of Australia in the final, played in simmering heat on South Pacific Island. They finished the Games unbeaten after wins over Singapore (61-0), Namibia (46-0), England (19-14) and hosts Samoa (29-0).

The Springbok Sevens are the reigning Commonwealth Games champions after their gold medal success in Glasgow last year.

SA U18 Sevens team manager, Marius Schoeman, was pleased with the performance of the team and said he is very glad that they could achieve their goal – and that was to go one step further than the silver medal won at the previous edition of the tournament in the Isle of Man, where South Africa lost to England in the final.

Paul Delport, a former Springbok Sevens star and current coach of the successful SA Sevens Academy team, coached the team in Samoa.

Schoeman praised the performance of the squad: “The majority of the squad consists of players who did very well for the SA Schools team in the recent Under-18 International Series against quality opposition. Although we won’t have much time together before we flew to Samoa, we were always confident that the boys would perform well.

“Taking into account that the boys only got together again just two days before our marathon trip from South Africa to Samoa, then I really think that we can be proud of our boys. Our first pool match against Singapore went extremely well and we also used that match to try different combinations. We grew stronger with every match and the fact that we got the better of Australia in the final, said a lot. The Aussies knocked out a very strong Fijian team coached by their senior coach, Ben Ryan,” explained Schoeman.

The gold medal winning squad arrives back in South Africa on Monday.
