  • Brakkies het nie brieke nie

Hoërskool Brackenfell in aksie by hul jaarlikse sportdag, 2024 | FOTO: Reinhardt Hamman

  • Paul Roos defeats St Stithians in classy clash at Founders

Sunday’s action at the Founder’s Hockey Festival included a mouthwatering showdown between Paul Roos and St Stithians, two of 2023’s best teams, and they showed that they remain elite in a fascinating battle.

In the early going, Saints took the game to Paul Roos, who took a while to settle down. The Stellenbosch side, however, was defensively sound.

Once St Stithians approached the final third of the field, they were stymied time after time. They did string some nice moves together at the back and in the midfield, but PRG worked effectively as a unit to keep Saints in check.

In the second chukka, the Johannesburg school thought they had taken the lead from a penalty corner. A shot hit the backboard, but it had been too high and dangerous on its way there and the goal was disallowed.

St Stithians went blow-for-blow with Paul Roos, but the Stellenbosch boys stood firm in defence.
St Stithians went blow-for-blow with Paul Roos, but the Stellenbosch boys stood firm in defence.

Paul Roos then pulled off a sucker punch, striking shortly after that with a field goal.

After a slowish start, they had settled in well and while Saints enjoyed sufficient possession, not much of it happened up front.

After half-time, SA u21 star Reuben Sendzel, a serious threat at penalty corner time, beat the goalkeeper low and to his right from the set piece to double the PRG advantage.

Saints kept battling hard, but it became clear that it was going to be Paul Roos’s day.

Later, though, Saints took out their frustrations on the Northwood 2nd XI, winning 6-0.

The Northwood 1st side is touring Argentina and, given the second team’s competitiveness – they drew with Rondebosch and Dale on Saturday – coach Justin Collins and his team are surely going to make some noise when they return to South Africa.

Meanwhile, Paul Roos kept their pristine defensive record intact later in the day when they recorded a 4-0 win over Affies. The Pretoria school had beaten Dale College 3-1 in their first match on Sunday.

PRG’s big rivals, SACS, outplayed the Northwood 2nd XI 8-0 in the morning, and the SACS’ train kept chugging along in the afternoon, when they handed Queen’s College a 5-0 defeat. Litha Kraai dazzled with some rocket-propelled reverse stick goals.

In the first match of the day, Queen’s had fallen 0-2 behind Parktown Boys’ High within the first four minutes of their game. After that, they gave a much better account of themselves and ended up going 1-2 down.

Kearsney College, who won both of their day one matches, played to a 1-1 draw with Rondebosch at midday. They would be disappointed about the manner in which they conceded.

Rondebosch defended well to keep Kearsney's attack in check for most of their match.
Rondebosch defended well to keep Kearsney’s attack in check for most of their match.

While leading 1-0, they attempted to play too much hockey at the back in an effort to exit, allowed themselves to be closed down, and were turned over. ‘Bosch latched onto the loose ball and stuck home the opportunity to level the scores. In the end, 1-1 was probably a fair result in a scrappy contest.

The hosts found their goal-scoring mojo, however, when they rolled to a 4-0 win over Parktown.

After two days of action, they have posted three wins and a draw, but their toughest assignment awaits them on Monday, when they take on Paul Roos in the event’s last match. It will be preceded by a marquee match-up between SACS and St Stithians.

    RESULTS

    Parktown 2-1 Queen’s
    SACS 8-0 Northwood
    Paul Roos 2-0 St Stithians

    SACS 5-0 Queen’s

  • Charlie Hofmeyr stoomroller die kompetisie op Riversdal

Charlie Hofmeyr 1ste Span (Foto verskaf)

  • DHS grabs the Coastal Cup spotlight

The three-day Coastal Cup tournament wrapped up in style on Sunday afternoon with the Durban High School (DHS) 1st XI continuing its impressive form to finish the event with a perfect record of four wins from four matches.

On the first day, DHS cruised past St Alban’s 5-1 but were pushed hard by Garsfontein, before claiming a narrow 1-0 win.

On Saturday, the Horseflies produced a tighter than expected 2-1 win over Menlopark, but they were in fine form on Sunday, securing their unbeaten record with a big 5-0 victory over Paarl Boys’ High.

Meanwhile, Westville Boys’ High suffered their first loss of the festival on the final day, going down 1-3 to Garsfontein.

Those were the first goals the Griffin had given up in the event. Previously, they beat, in succession, Pearson 1-0, Paarl 2-0, and Waterkloof 4-0.

The young Glenwood High School 1st team pulled off a first victory in their last outing, finishing the festival on an optimistic note after outplaying Waterkloof 3-1.

Goals had been hard to come by for Glenwood in their previous matches, but their sights were in on Sunday. On Friday, they went down 0-4 to Pretoria’s Menlopark and 0-2 to St Alban’s. On Saturday, Garsfontein ran out 3-0 winners.

Menlopark, along with Waterkloof, one of the festival’s newcomers, picked up a second victory, defeating Clifton College 2-0.

In the u16s, Paarl held DHS to a 2-2 draw to dash their winning ways, while Westville lost 0-1 to Garsfontein. Waterkloof enjoyed a paper-thin 3-2 triumph over Glenwood.

Meanwhile, Westville closed the tournament on a high note in the u14 competition, cruising to a 6-0 victory over Garsfontein, while St Alban’s saw off Pearson 4-1, and Waterkloof matched that scoreline in a victory over Glenwood.

Bishops Diocesan College ended the Bishops 175 Hockey Festival as the only unbeaten team following a 4-0 trouncing of St Benedict’s College on the festival’s final day at the Woodlands Astroturf in Cape Town.

The hosts, who entered the tournament with momentum and confidence after winning all three of their matches at the Parel Vallei Boys’ Hockey Festival a week ago, continued their fine form, this time in front of their buzzing home supporters.

The festival’s opening day saw coach Ryan Julius‘s team brush off Michaelhouse with a commanding 3-1 win.

That was followed by a 4-0 win against St Charles College before they edged out St David’s Marist Inanda 2-0 on Friday.

The Cape side turned up the tempo on the third day, scoring 10 goals in their two matches while conceding only one. They netted eight times against Bloemfontein’s St Andrew’s School, before digging deep to claim a 2-1 win over Makhanda’s St Andrew’s College in the main game on day three.

In their final match of the festival, on Sunday, they took on another unbeaten side, St Benedict’s College. Prior to the clash, Bennies had recorded three wins and two draws.

With their legs tired after a long festival, Bishops were still sound on attack and defence, executing their game plan well. That delivered them a 4-0 victory, with regular goal scorers’ Luc Dicey, Christopher Gray, David Handley, and Joshua Mettler all getting onto the score sheet.

After a clean run through their opposition at the festival, which followed an unbeaten pre-season, the Bishops’ 1st XI’s record remains unblemished. Coach Julius says he’s happy with the progress his team has made.

“The boys were tired [in the final match], after a very busy week, but adapted well to the change of tactics,” he told SuperSport Schools.

“It was a very good team display. We asserted [our] dominance from the beginning.

“I was very happy to see that, especially to perform like that at the end of the tournament makes me proud as a coach, regarding the mindset and culture we’re trying to create within the group.”

Another result that caught the eye on the final day was Michaelhouse’s 3-0 victory over St Andrew’s College.

‘House entered the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw against Bennies, and a 2-0 win over the Langa Hockey Club on Saturday. They appear to be finding their way under new coach Nick Bérichon after a difficult 2023 season.

Meanwhile, St Andrew’s College had their unbeaten start to the season ended on Saturday, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the hosts. On Sunday, Nicholas Fearnhead grabbed a double and Luke Camerer added a third to give Michaelhouse a confidence-boosting signature victory over College at the end of the festival.

St Charles and Somerset College also ended off with wins, defeating the Langa Hockey Club and St Andrew’s School respectively.

Somerset College’s Michael du Toit was named the Player of the Festival, while Byron Comley, of St Benedict’s, and James Grieve, of Bishops, were named Players of Note.

The Top Goal Scorer was St Andrew’s College’s Connor McNamara, with Bishops’ Robbie Veldtman the 2nd Top Goal Scorer.

The Defender of the Festival honours went to Marley Waspe of Uplands College, while Khotso Mabona, of St David’s Marist Inanda, and Pikolomzi Nkompela, of Michaelhouse, were recognised as Defenders of Note.

Bishops Diocesan College maintained their unbeaten record at the Bishops 175 Hockey Festival when they defeated St Andrew’s College 2-1 in the final match of day three at the Woodlands Astroturf in Cape Town on Saturday.

The Bishops’ win brought to an end an eight-game winning streak for the side from Makhanda.

Before the match, those two teams and St Benedict’s College were the only unbeaten sides and were gunning to keep those records intact ahead of the final day on Sunday.

The hosts beat Michaelhouse 3-1 on the opening day and followed up that result with a 4-0 win against St Charles College, before showing grit to beat St David’s Marist Inanda 2-0 on Friday.

They went on to annihilate St Andrew’s School 8-0 on Saturday, with James Grieve scoring a brace before Christopher Gray, Bryn Parry, Luc Dicey, Andrew Betty, Andrew Raubenheimer, and David Handley got themselves onto the scoresheet.

Coach Dean Ferreira‘s St Andrew’s College team, on the other hand, had caught the eye early in the season.

A week ago, at the Tony Godding Festival, they defeated Grey College 2-1, and claimed other victories over, among others, Hudson Park, Bethlehem Voortrekker, and Merrifield College.

At the Bishops Fest, they had claimed the scalps of the Langa Hockey Club, Uplands College, and St David’s Marist Inanda, before they faced the home team.

The contest started out very evenly, with both sides struggling to make an impression on the other’s defences in the first chukka.

Bishops, were, however, the first to open the scoring in the second chukka through a penalty stroke, with Robert Veldtman converting from the spot to put his side into the lead.

Minutes later, Bishops suffered a blow, when Thomas Malan had to leave the pitch after he suffered a hard blow on the wrist from the ball.

Bishops held onto that narrow 1-0 lead at the break, but St Andrew’s quickly equalised in the third chukka, with Connor McNamara striking from a penalty corner.

Heading into the final chukka, the teams were level at 1-1 and, it seemed, something special would be required to break the deadlock. Joshua Mettler duly delivered it.

He produced a brilliant individual goal, finding the back of the net after a superb 20-metre dribble. That was just enough, and coach Ryan Julius‘s side held on for a 2-1 win, much to the delight of the home supporters.

In other matches, Somerset College picked up another victory, edging Uplands College 4-3 in their first game, before playing to a 1-1 draw with St David’s Marist Inanda.

St Benedict’s College continued their fine form. After drawing 1-1 with Michaelhouse in the morning, they dominated Uplands College in the afternoon.

Coach Owen Mvimbi‘s side controlled possession and territory and were clinical in front of goal, which brought them a 5-0 victory, courtesy of an Alex Johnston double, with Connor Odgers, Timothy Burnham, and Marco Mendes also scoring.

The Johannesburg side will face its toughest challenge yet when they take on the hosts, Bishops, on Sunday in the final match of the festival at 12:40.

After claiming wins on Friday against Uplands and St Andrew’s School, Langa Hockey Club pushed St Andrew’s College all the way but went down 2-4 in their first match on Saturday.

In their second encounter of the day, they took on Michaelhouse and made life hard for the boys from the KZN Midlands. It was 0-0 at halftime, with neither side able to capitalise on the opportunities they had created.

‘House, however, came out firing in the third chukka, and scored twice to seize victory.

Another team that also got a “W” next to their name was St David’s Marist Inanda, who edged out St Charles College 2-1. They will take on the winless Uplands College in Sunday’s first match, at 08:00.

Langa will aim to end their campaign with a win against St Charles College, while Somerset College completes their schedule against Bloemfontein’s St Andrew’s School.
