Westville Boys’ High centre-back and captain, Owen Slack, has been at the forefront of the Griffin’s smothering defence.
Durban High School (DHS) and Westville Boys’ High maintained their unbeaten streaks on the second day of the Coastal Cup, being played at the Riverside Sports Club and DHS in Durban.
The Horseflies beat Menlopark 2-1 in their only game of Saturday after cruising past St Alban’s 5-1 and beating Garsfontein 1-0 in a very challenging fixture on the opening day.
Westville’s defence kept its unblemished record with a 4-0 win over Waterkloof. On Friday, they beat Pearson 1-0 and Paarl Boys’ High 2-0.
Meanwhile, Glenwood High School is still in search of a first win after suffering a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Garsfontein. They previously lost 0-2 to St Alban’s and 0-4 to Menlopark.
Paarl Boys’ High were convincingly outplayed by Pearson, going down to their second defeat of the tournament.
In the u16 competition, Pearson halted Paarl’s winning ways with a 1-1 draw. Paarl won 3-1 against Waterkloof and Westville the previous day. DHS, meanwhile, handed Menlopark a 0-3 loss, following up their opening day victories over St Alban’s (5-1) and Garsfontein (2-1).
Westville is still chasing a first u16 victory after drawing 1-1 with Waterkloof.
The Griffin’s u14A side, however, has been rampant. They crushed Waterkloof 8-0 and have now scored 16 times in three games without conceding a goal.
Glenwood, meanwhile, were 4-0 winners over Garsfontein.
The Coastal Cup wraps up on Sunday with 15 matches – five in each age group.
Clifton opens the u18 proceedings against Menlopark, followed by Glenwood against Waterkloof.
The DHS u16s will attempt to continue their winning run when they face Paarl Boys’ High on their home Astro, while the Westville u14 side will chase another win, this time against Garsfontein at Riverside.
SACS won by four goals against a good Affies’ team in their first match at the Founders Festival.
Day one of the Founders Hockey Festival, played on The Mason Astro at Kearsney College, saw some of the favourites running up big scores, which was testament to their good approach play in the final third of the field, sure finishing, and well-oiled penalty corner routines.
SACS, the number one team in the country in 2023, was in action in the opening game against Affies and quickly demonstrated that they remain a class act. They rolled to a 5-1 victory, looking assured on the ball, organised across the park, and always in control.
Later, they overwhelmed Parktown Boys’ High 7-1. It was a tough opening day for Parktown, who were beaten 5-0 in their first game, against Paul Roos.
A swift counterattack and an easy tap-in got Paul Roos onto the scoreboard against Parktown.
The Johannesburg school played some decent hockey between the two 23m lines and, in fact, probably shaded the number of penalty corners awarded in their match against the Stellenbosch side. The problem was that they never got a shot off, attempting PC variations every time, which suggested a lack of confidence in their routine.
Paul Roos, meanwhile, had Reuben Sendzel on the drag flick and he showed how to finish from the set piece.
Northwood, who recently returned from a tour of Argentina, had a bit of an underwhelming day. They drew 0-0 with Rondebosch in their opener, with ‘Bosch enjoying the better of the contest, and then played to a 1-1 draw with Dale College.
To put Northwood’s draw with Dale into perspective, Kearsney College, the hosts, strode to a 5-0 win over the team from Qonce in the second match of the day. Captain Matt de Oliveira and his team found Affies a tougher nut to crack in the early afternoon, but recorded a second successive win, triumphing 2-1.
Under the leadership of their new Director of Hockey, Keegan Pearce, Kearsney played a well-structured game. They appear confident and have some outstanding players in their ranks.
Kearsney produced an assured performance to convincingly defeat Dale College.
They’ll feel they’re in with a good shot at adding another two wins on Sunday, when they take on Rondebosch and Parktown. Their biggest test, though, will come on Monday, when they tackle Paul Roos in the final game of the festival, just before midday.
‘Bosch showed up well against Northwood, but they went 1-2 down against St Stithians in the early evening.
Queen’s College tackled the Aitken Trophy champs in their opener. Saints controlled the tempo of that contest and also delivered some good finishes to put away the boys from Komani by a 5-0 margin.
It didn’t get any easier for Queen’s next time out, with a challenging outing against Paul Roos. The Stellenbosch boys, now under former DHS Director of Hockey, Michael Baker, who returned to KZN for the first time since his move to the Western Cape, netted six times without reply, to take their tally for the opening day to 11 without conceding.

Selborne College and Grey High School were the only unbeaten teams when the curtain came down on the Nomads Hockey Festival on Saturday afternoon after three days of entertaining hockey action at Maritzburg College.
The 2024 edition of the annual showcase saw St John’s College record their first win in the past two years at the festival with an upset defeat of an in-form Grey College on Friday. Jeppe High School for Boys, who dominated last year, drawing their first match before winning their remaining four, lost their first three this time around, before recording two wins.
Although they emerged with a spotless record, Grey High almost lost in their very first outing, falling 0-2 behind Maritzburg College before scoring three unanswered goals after halftime to claim a 3-2 victory. Later, on Thursday, they outplayed St John’s 4-1.
An early morning clash with Hilton College on Friday proved to be a serious examination, but Grey came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win. In the afternoon, they trampled King Edward VII School (KES) 6-0.
In their last match, against Pretoria Boys High, on Saturday, they were 2-1 victors.
Beynon, who was in charge of Collegiate Girls’ High School before making the switch to Grey, has enjoyed swift success with his team, which has now swept their opposition in back-to-back festivals, not dropping a single game in 10 over the course of consecutive weekends.
Despite their success, Beynon feels that his team is not yet where it should be: “We are at the early stages of our journey. We want to play an attacking brand of hockey and at times we were able to do that. Accuracy in transition comes with time together as a group,” Beynon told SuperSport Schools.
In the lead up to the 2024 hockey season, KJ Friend and his Selborne College team spent a lot of time working on retaining possession and being disciplined when dispossessed. Every now and then, he reminded his charges that if they kept the ball the rest would fall into place. That ideology was tested at the Tony Godding Festival, where Selborne went five for five.
“We didn’t play really tough opposition last weekend, so coming here this week and facing tougher teams, the emphasis was on sticking to our processes whatever the circumstance,” Friend said.
The plan worked. By sticking to those principles, Selborne controlled the pace and tempo of all of their encounters, which forced their opponents to adapt to the East London side’s style of play.
Central to Selborne’s success was their captain, Tre’ Gilbert. He found the back of the net every time his team stepped onto Pape’s Astro. His tally of six goals was the most by a Selborne player at Nomads, and it brought his total to 14 goals in the two festivals.
At Nomads, Selborne netted 11 times and conceded only three goals as they bagged another five wins from five matches, defeating KES, Pretoria Boys High, Jeppe, Maritzburg College and St John’s.
Selborne’s next assignment will be a tough one, too, at next week’s KES Easter Festival. And while Friend is keen to keep the unbeaten run going, he is not getting his head lost in the clouds.
“The important thing when you have a lot of matches like this is to not focus too far ahead. Take it one day at a time, one match at a time and one play at a time. Don’t think about the later, think about the present. Each game will be different, so you have to prepare accordingly,” he said.

His team includes two players high in confidence. First up is Rondebosch Boys High’s Noah Reiback, who starred for his school during the final of the KES Water Polo Tournament earlier this month.

Randburg, a town that is just over an hour’s drive from where the Sharpeville Massacre occurred on 21 March 1960, hosted Joburg City Football Club on what is now celebrated as Human Rights Day for the fourth round of the Gauteng Development League.
The hosts, Randburg AFC, went into their clash in search of a victory following a 2-2 draw against Kaizer Chiefs the previous week, while Joburg City travelled to the Randburg Sports Complex a wounded unit after suffering a 2-4 loss at home against Rosina Sedibane on matchday three.
On Thursday, Randburg AFC forward, Siphosethu Buthelezi, playing on the left wing, caused all kinds of problems for the Joburg City defenders. Using his blistering speed and excellent right foot, he sliced past the opposition defenders, often cutting infield to create opportunities for the strikers.
Buthelezi executed the strategy to perfection and, at times, took it upon himself to have a go, but that was about the only thing that didn’t come off for the winger.
Despite the relentless pressure from the hosts, Joburg City were the first to score in the clash through a well-timed header from Khetheleo Ngcobo.
The goal came from a corner kick, which swung in from the right wing. Ngcobo positioned himself perfectly next to the left post where he outjumped the defenders to nod the ball into the back of the net.
Three minutes later, from a free kick, Randburg fired a shot on target. Under pressure from striker Mashiyane Sinamela, the Joburg City goalkeeper could not hang on to the shot and instead parried it back into play.
Sinamela, wearing the number nine jersey, demonstrated his predatory instincts by taking up a perfect position and meeting the ball with his right foot to equalise for the hosts on the stroke of half-time.
The deadlock was unbroken in the second half and the teams shared a 1-1 draw.
In Pretoria, an in-form SuperSport United under-19 unit hosted the East Rand Athletic Club at Eskom Megawatt Park. The hosts struck three goals while the visitors claimed a solitary consolation goal. United remain unbeaten after four rounds of fixtures.
NWU Vaal hosted Kaizer Chiefs at the George Thabe Stadium on Thursday. Unfortunately, their clash was abandoned due to a thunderstorm.
At President Park Stadium, home to Remember Elite Sports Academy (RESA), a waterlogged field prevented the match against Highlands Park from being played, which further hurt the champions’ chances of a reestablishing their dominance and successfully defending their league title.
At Elandsfontein, however, there were no issues as the School of Excellence drew 2-2 with Tuks, while Panorama FC and Jomo Cosmos settled for a goalless draw at the Panorama Sports Complex.
Sevens Academy pulled off an upset when they beat a strong TS Galaxy side 1-0 at the Alberton Football Club.Mamelodi Sundowns (1-0) and Rosina Sedibane (3-1) registered victories over Kathorus Hyper Academy and Wits Junior respectively.

Grey High School and Selborne College are the only unbeaten teams after two days of captivating hockey at the Nomads Hockey Festival, being hosted by Maritzburg College, in Pietermaritzburg.
The 10-team annual showpiece kicked off on Thursday and ends on Saturday with a contest between the hosts and last year’s juggernaut, Jeppe.
In 2023, when they hosted the event, Grey High won four of their five fixtures. Their sole loss came at the hands of Maritzburg College. Coach Andrew Beynon’s charges avenged that defeat on the first day of the festival with a 3–2 win over the 2024 hosts.
With that frenetic tie out of the way, the boys from Gqeberha could focus on maintaining their 100 percent win record in the first two events they have participated in this year. They duly followed that victory over College with a 4–1 thumping of St John’s in Thursday’s last match.
On Friday, Grey High took two steps forward on their unbeaten run, which began at the Tony Godding Festival, with victories over Hilton College and King Edward VII School (KES).
Beynon’s team has routinely scored multiple goals this year, but they had to play out of their socks against Hilton’s organised defence. A 0-1 loss to Grey High ended the KZN team’s unbeaten run.
In the afternoon session, Grey High regrouped and found their goal-scoring form, making up for their single goal haul of the morning, by firing six past KES.
St John’s pulled off a big upset when they toppled a red-hot Grey College. Coming into the match, the Free Staters had won two in two, while St John’s had not only lost two in two, but they had scored just a single goal and conceded eight.
Last year, coach Gilbert de Villiers’ charges’ best performance was a 1-1 draw in their match against St Charles. They were beaten in their other four matches, with their heaviest loss being 0-4 to Grey College.
With a 2-1 win over Grey this time around, St John’s avenged last season’s big defeat.
Selborne had little trouble maintaining their clean record which, like Grey High’s, goes back to the Tony Godding Festival. KJ Friend’s team did just enough to remain unbeaten.
The first order of business for Tre’ Gilbert and his team was to keep a smarting Jeppe at bay. Last year, Jeppe won four and drew one of their matches at Nomads, but they seemed unable to buy a win this year.
Coach Siya Sityana’s charges threw everything they had at Friend’s team but came up short, going 0-1 down. With a third win under their belt, Selborne took on the hosts with confidence in their second match of the day. Sticking to their structures, they ran out 2-0 winners over Maritzburg College.
Jeppe finally managed to end their winless nightmare when they produced a stirring performance to outlast Wynberg 4-3.
The Johannesburg side will be eager to make it back-to-back victories on Saturday, while College will be keen to have the final word when they meet on Pape’s Astro. Those two schools have produced more South African Schools players than any others, so the honours in a rich rivalry are on the line.

The 2024 Coastal Cup got off to a cracking start in Durban on Friday, with newcomers, Menlopark, making their mark in the opener by handing Glenwood a 4-0 defeat.
Later, however, the Pretoria side was on the wrong end of a similar scoreline when they went down to Pearson High School.
Glenwood will hope for a better day on Saturday, after they lost both of their first-day clashes. Their second match, against St Alban’s College, went the Gauteng side’s way by a 2-0 margin.
Westville Boys’ High enjoyed an impressive first day, winning an arm wrestle against Pearson by a goal to nil – the sides had drawn 3-3 at last year’s event – and then beating Paarl Boys’ High 2-0.
Durban High School (DHS) cruised to a convincing 5-1 win over St Alban’s and then edged out Garsfontein 1-0, while Clifton College and Garsfontein played to a 1-1 draw around midday. In the evening, Clifton downed Waterkloof 2-1.
After going a goal down, Garsfontein levelled against Clifton from a penalty corner that left goalkeeper Georg Wolhuter well beaten.
In the u16 age group, DHS bagged a 5-1 win over St Alban’s and followed up with a 2-1 victory over Garsfontein. Paarl also dominated, recording 3-1 wins over Waterkloof and Westville 3-1. The Menlopark Juniors were held in a 2-2 draw by Glenwood and were beaten 2-1 by Pearson.
There were some high-scoring u14 games, with Paarl Boys’ High sneaking a 5-4 win over Waterkloof and Menlopark sharing a 4-4 draw with Glenwood. Westville Boys’ High, though, were imperious, notching two 4-0 victories, over Pearson and Paarl Boys’ High respectively.
Saturday’s action begins with the Garsfontein 1st team taking on Glenwood, while DHS battles Menlopark in the u16 competition, and Paarl takes on Pearson will open the u-14 clash.
