Diocesan College sent a clear warning to their 2024 opponents with a perfect run as the hosts of the Old Mutual Peninsula Cricket Festival.

Tiaan Louw made mincemeat of the Pretoria Boys High batting lineup on Saturday, snaring 5/7 as Bishops earned their fifth emphatic win on the trot to kick off the new year.

The locals have been in scintillating form all week and further asserted their dominance on the final day.

Batting first, Bishops powered to an imposing 203/8, thanks to classy knocks by Adnaan Lagadien (67) and James Robb-Quinlan (70), who smashed 13 sixes between them.

David Handley also played a solid innings, narrowly missing out on a half-century. While the rest of the Bishops’ batsmen struggled to find an answer to the PBHS bowling duo of Nicholas Rossouw and Johan Coetzer, who have both been excellent all week, Diocesan College still managed an imposing total in their 20 overs.

Louw wasted no time in showcasing his intent with Pretoria Boys in the middle. It took him only four deliveries to claim his first scalp, and he would go on to claim a five-for, playing a pivotal role in dismissing the challengers for 85 runs to maintain the host’s unblemished record.

The Diocesan College team will surely be delighted with their achievements at the festival. They’re a well-oiled unit, ready for an action-packed season, in which it appears they are one of the top teams in the country.

Rondebosch Boys’ High, protecting a score of 149/6 against St Charles, ran out comfortable winners.

The ‘Bosch bowlers did well to contain Saints, despite an impressive 47 runs by Cian Fortmann at the start of the innings.

Daniel Powell spearheaded the attack, taking 3/13 as the southern suburbs’ powerhouse continued an impressive run of form. Like Bishops, they will be one of the teams to beat this year, with an experienced squad that is already firing on all cylinders well ahead of the new school year’s fixtures.

Litha Kraai and Benji Blackburn picked up three wickets apiece for SACS in their final match against St David’s Marist Inanda.

Rowan Taplin then contributed 46 with the bat as SACS returned to winning ways in the wake of two difficult fixtures.

The 2023 SA Schools’ captain, Benni Hansen, notched 40 runs for Wynberg against Affies, but the visitors were able to chip away at their target of 151 through the combined efforts of Jorich van Schalkwyk (38), Ruben Groenewald (29) and Janco Purchase (37*), which ensured they returned home with another victory in the bag.

Waterkloof, the winners of the past two North-South T20 titles, ended their campaign on a high against Hilton College. Marcus Bakker‘s speedy 61 off of 34 deliveries and Divan Behrens‘ unbeaten 40 secured the win for Klofies before they head back to Pretoria.

  • Minnaar’s second century in two days not enough for Hans Moore

Despite Warren Minnaar continuing his brilliant run of form, Westville Boys’ High stayed in the fight and pulled off a thrilling victory over Hans Moore in Paarl on day two of the 2024 HJS Cricket Week.

On Friday, Minnaar added a second century to his name in as many days and recorded a third successive unbeaten innings to power Hans Moore to 259/7.

Zander Swart‘s impressive knock of 73 off of 52 deliveries at the end of the innings meant the KZN boys had a mountain to climb when they took to the crease.

Westville opener Max Robertson, though, delivered a composed knock, scoring 106 runs, to give the Griffin a solid platform for their run chase.

Kaeden McAllister assisted further with 77 runs, and suddenly Westville were in a position to secure an impressive victory, with Chad van Breda seeing them to the win.

They face their toughest challenge of the event thus far on Saturday when they take on Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch, but the KZN side will be encouraged by their battling win over a strong Hans Moore team.

Paul Roos looked strong in their match against Marais Viljoen as they cruised to victory, courtesy of the bowling of Neil Barnard and Luca Plekker, who both picked up three wickets.

Darshik Lutchman‘s unbeaten 91 helped St John’s College to steamroll their way to 273/8 against a strong side from Somerset College.

The Johannesburg outfit then backed up their elite batting performance with a bowling masterclass by Cole Francis (6/30) and Kago Masote (3/31), which curtailed any hopes of a fightback by the locals.

Noordheuwel‘s bowlers’ discipline made the difference as they scraped a one-wicket win over Paarl GimnasiumRyan Montanus was at the fore of the Nories’ effort, snaring three Gimmies for 23 runs.

While the Noordheuwel batsmen also struggled to find a rhythm, Dian Taljaard and Corné Olivier did enough to put pressure on the local bowlers, which led to them conceding more extras and that proved vital to the outcome of the match.

Marius Penning still had some work to do at 180/9, with another 10 runs required to win, but the tailender remained calm and saw his side to a hard-fought victory.

Parel Vallei appeared to be well set after an unbeaten partnership of 105 runs by Chris Hughes and Marco Karsten drove them to 231/5 after 50 overs against Northern Cape High School.

The Kimberley side put up a valiant fight, with Faizan Kajee scoring 57 runs while weathering 103 deliveries, and Vonn Basson making 40 off of 55. It was, however, the bowling of Caleb Robinson (4/39) and Christopher Hughes (2/16) that provided breakthroughs at crucial moments in the match and secured victory for the locals.

Northcliff came to within 20 runs of victory for a second time during the HJS Festival, but Ruald Coetzee and Janno Junas protected Hoërskool Bellville‘s low total with some outstanding bowling.

Meyer sink ses vir Helpmekaar, Conradie en Prins laat Diamonds les opsê

Kyle Swanepoel, Helpmekaar | Fotograaf: Heinrich Minnaar

  • Elkington scores first century of 2024 Grey Fest

    Xander Elkington, Grey High

Grey High School‘s Nathan Howell and Xander Elkington stole the show on day two of the 2024 Sunrisers Grey Cricket Festival.

King Edward VII won the toss and elected to bat first on Friday and, after two early wickets fell, Michael Holmes and Troy Gordon found their feet at the crease.

Holmes weathered 115 deliveries as he contributed 61 to the visitors’ total. However, after their partnership was broken, Howell’s 5/5 wreaked havoc on the rest of the KES batting lineup. Three of those dismissed batsmen were caught behind the wicket by ‘keeper, Mark Wolfe, who had a busy day at the office as Grey High bowled out KES for 167.

Josh Rennie (33) and Kian Cambier (44) gave Grey a steady start to their run chase, but it was Xander Elkington who wrestled control for the hosts with his excellent unbeaten innings of 102.

Eric Southey (34*) and Michael Holmes (48*) put up a spirited fight in the visitors’ second innings but, in the end, Grey needed only the one innings to secure victory.

Despite a slow start by the Menlopark batsmen in their match against Grey College, they were boosted by some phenomenal bowling from Matt van der Westhuizen, who took 5/12, and Gerhard Nico van Zyl, who dismissed the team from Bloemfontein’s opening three batsmen, as the Pretoria side edged out the Free Staters on the first innings.

Potchefstroom Volkskool earned a convincing win over St Andrew’s School from Bloemfontein.

Schalk and Kobus Pienaar were pivotal to their team’s success, combining to take 7/23 to pile the pressure on Saints from the off.

Louis van Wyk then scored 62 for Volkies to help them build a 103-run first innings’ buffer, which proved more than enough.

Christopher Elston starred in Jeppe‘s triumph over Selborne, capturing four wickets for a mere 16 runs as they kept the East London outfit from reaching triple figures.

Sibonela Phewa‘s 90 was the second highest individual score on a day that favoured the bowlers. He, along with Nathan Moodley‘s contribution of 76, did enough to secure a victory for Glenwood over Framesby on the first innings.

Taine Douw played well to score an undefeated 35 in a 99-ball stay, but Dhilan Naraidu‘s 5/13 stopped any hopes of a Framesby fightback.

After Jude Septoo (6/26) and Sulaymaan Gangat (3/28) restricted the Namibian Invitational team’s total to 143, it was left to Pearson captain, the older Gangat sibling, Esa, to lead from the front again, as he scored 81 to take his side past the visitors’ tally.

On Saturday, Pearson will test their mettle against Grey College in the first round of 50 overs matches, while the hosts will do battle with Glenwood on the Pollock Field.

  • Van Zyl bags five-for in thumping victory over Muir College

Van Zyl bags five-for in thumping victory over Muir College

Roman van Zyl led the way for St Andrew’s College as they cruised to a thumping victory over Muir College on Friday at the Makhanda Cricket Festival. The opening bowler’s figures of 5 for 10 had the Muir batsmen in disarray as they stumbled to a disappointing 30 all out.

This came after William Beamish was among the runs for a second day in a row, striking a classy 82 runs from 102 deliveries. Mitch Coventry also continued his good form, adding 70 runs to his tally for the week.

Solid contributions from Mark Were (30*, 26b) and Murray Wilson (27, 40b) gave College a further boost as they put up 244/6 before the declaration came.

In the Muir second innings, with only five wickets required for victory according to the laws of Time Cricket, Scott Miles led the way for College, bagging three of the five wickets at a cost of five runs, to steer St Andrew’s to a mammoth 209-run victory.

Jaryd Botha’s 71 led Kingswood College to a first innings’ win of 48 runs over Peterhouse Boys’. His innings, together with a solid contribution of 38 from 78 deliveries by Christopher Zimmerman and an unbeaten 21 from the blade of Ross Thompson, stretched Kingswood’s total to 193.

Ryan Moyo did the bulk of the damage for the Peterhouse side, claiming four wickets for 43 runs, while Sean Bennett followed up his success with the ball on day one with another three wickets, while conceding 47 runs.

Tyler Chapman then shone with the bat for the Zimbabwean school, from Marondera, scoring a mature 50 runs from 86 balls and Rukudzo Midzi weighed with a solid 47. Despite those two good knocks, it was not enough as Matt Loon destroyed the Peterhouse innings with a return of four wickets for 24 runs, while Jack Collet also impressed, picking up 4 for 33.

Murray Tyson‘s and Ashton Williams’s all-round performances secured a 67-run first innings’ victory for Graeme College over Hellenic Academy.

Tyson led the way with both bat and ball, top scoring with a fine 64 from 71 balls, which he followed up with three wickets for 29 runs. Williams bagged three wickets for just two runs and contributed a fiery 37 from 29 deliveries.

Only Daniel Makings appeared comfortable against the Kingswood attack for Hellenic Academy, contributing 32 and 36 not out, while Luke van Zyl was the pick of the Zimbabwean side’s bowlers, taking 2/40 in Graeme College’s first innings.

Divan de Villiers played a spectacular innings for Affies on Friday, the fourth day of the 2024 Old Mutual Peninsula Cricket Festival, scoring an unbeaten 118 against St David’s Marist Inanda.

With the help of Vihan Pretorius (82), who already has one highlight-reel innings at the tournament, the team from Pretoria set up a massive 304/5 to defend.

Despite the mammoth challenge they faced, St David’s put up a strong fight in a brave attempt to chase down the required total.

Jason Rowles, who was out just shy of a half-century, led from the front as his side mustered a respectable 244, but Ruben Groenewald‘s 4/42 helped Affies to a solid 61-run win.

Diocesan College maintained their perfect dominant run at their home tournament with a fourth win on the trot against a strong Waterkloof side.

The hosts showed their class, controlling the match throughout. They were outstanding in the field, with Waco Bassick and Tiaan Louw taking three wickets apiece to restrict Waterkloof to a modest total of 136.

Bishops’ openers, Kashief Joseph and Adnaan Lagadien, understood their assignment and raced to 60 runs each before Luan Ferreira saved some pride for Klofies by dismissing Lagadien just before the end of the game, but by then the visitors’ fate had already been sealed.

The locals needed less than 18 of their 50 overs to overtake Waterkloof’s score and keep their perfect Peninsula Festival record intact.

Rondebosch Boys’ High continued to live up to their proud cricketing heritage as they, too, added another decisive victory to their record.

After putting on a show for the local supporters, with Noah Heath, Daniel Cooke and Joshua Neill posting half-centuries in an imposing total of 281/8, the ‘Bosch bowlers tore through the Hilton College batting lineup.

James Kirstin led the charge with 3/7, while Daniel Bosman and Declan Gillespie each grabbed a brace.

Special mention should also be made of the two schools’ u15 teams for providing one of the most exciting matches of the day.

After Schalk Fourie‘s memorable knock of 189 not out drove Rondebosch to a daunting 382/9, the highest score of the day, Hilton launched a spectacular run chase and fought valiantly to the end.

Ben Wilson struck an undefeated 122 for the visitors, who finished on a solid 302/5, which was an impressive feat but still 80 runs shy of the required total.

Pretoria Boys High managed another spectacular victory, this time against SACS. After their batting lineup crumbled in the face of a relentless attack by Benji Blackburn, Reza Salie and Litha Kraai, the PBHS trio of Adam Cannata, Johan Coetzer and Connor Hall returned the favour.

Cannata bagged five wickets and a catch as SACS were bowled out for only 89.

Wynberg Boys’ High outplayed St Charles College with Xavier Garvs stealing the spotlight and smashing 73 runs at better than a run a ball to power his team to victory.

That came after the Wynberg bowlers had already laid the groundwork for a comfortable win, with Ebrahim Fakir and Divan Linde each snaring the wickets of three Saints’ batsmen.

Teeger removed as captain, Luus added to SA u19 squad

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – JANUARY 08: David Teeger of South Africa during the Men’s U19 Tri-Series, 6th Youth ODI match between South Africa and Afghanistan at Old Edwardians CC on January 08, 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa. (Photo by Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images)

With tensions around the ongoing war in Gaza at a fever-pitch, Cricket South Africa has chosen to relieve David Teeger of the captaincy of the South Africa u19 team, which will be in action at the ICC u19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa from 19 January.

Teeger was previously criticised by the Palestine Solidarity Alliance for comments he made at the Absa Jewish Achiever Awards in late October where he praised Israel’s soldiers after he was presented with the Rising Star Award.

An independent inquiry, led by Advocate Wim Trengrove, found that Teeger had not breached the codes of conduct of either Cricket South Africa or the Central Gauteng Lions.

However, in a statement on Thursday, Cricket South Africa said: “As is the case with all such events, CSA has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the World Cup. We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament.

“We have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA Under-19 (SA U19) captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protesters.

“CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.

“In all the circumstances, CSA has decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament. This is in the best interests of the players themselves, the SA U19 team and David himself.

“David will remain an important and active member of the squad and we wish him and the team every success in the tournament. The newly appointed captain will be announced in due course.”

Apart from a forthcoming change in captaincy, a further change was announced to the South African squad, with Lions’ fast bowler Esosa Aihevba being forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a left knee injury which he sustained during the recent Tri-Series against India and Afghanistan.

Tristan Luus delivers pace and a more than useful bat to the SA u19 cricket squad.

He has been replaced by Tristan Luus. The Waterkloof speedster was a standout performer for the Northern Champions at the recently concluded CSA Cubs Week, where he twice captured five-fors, led all wicket-takers, and helped the Champions successfully defend their title with a perfect record of five wins from five matches.

Luus also excelled as a hard-hitting lower order batsman, contributing a number of telling innings to the Champions’ cause.

He was named in the SA Schools team at the conclusion of the 2023 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week and has signed with the Hollywoodbets Dolphins from 2024.

The Wege brothers, as ever, were prominent for the Boishaai first team in their first outing against Outeniqua. Christiaan Wege led the bowling figures, taking 3/22, while Johan Wege scored a cool 75 with the bat.

Aden Batt also menaced the Kwagga lineup, capturing 2/28, before following that up with 2/8 in the second innings, as Boishaai restricted the visitors to low totals in both of their visits to the crease.

Dian van der Westhuizen scored 77 to help his side to an imposing 250/8, assisted by Wege’s innings and JJ van der Sandt‘s unbeaten knock of 55.

Parel Vallei also started their campaign on a winning note, beating Cornwall Hill College by 73 runs, courtesy of a confident 80 runs scored by Migael van Schaick. The locals put up a challenging total of 249, which they defended, thanks in part to the contributions of Jameel Ismail and HJ Jones, who took three wickets apiece.

Helpmekaar delivered a dominant performance against Somerset College in their season-opener. Anrich Liebenberg (3/16) and Waldo Haasbroek (3/29) helped to contain the local batsmen to a first-innings total of 150.

The batsmen from the Johannesburg school then set about their task with intent, storming to a massive 275/4 before declaring.

Anrich Liebenberg, Hannu Marais and Kyle Swanepoel all added half-centuries to their records as they set up a safe buffer before sending out Somerset for their second innings.

Henricus Meyer spearheaded the attack in the second outing, claiming 2/8 as they secured an opening win after Somerset lost their fifth wicket, with the tournament rules deeming the second innings complete after the fifth wicket goes down.

After trailing by 73 on the first innings, Northcliff produced a spectacular second batting effort to push to within 11 runs of Curro Durbanville, but the locals managed to defend their lead.

Janré Lourens claimed six wickets and Caleb Inglis knocked over the other four as the duo wreaked havoc on Northcliff’s first innings, sending them packing for a meagre 56 runs.

After Daniyaal Klinck extended Curro’s lead, the Northcliff batsmen regrouped exceptionally well to score 172 runs before their fifth and final wicket fell, leaving them tantalisingly close to a stunning come-from-behind win.

Logan Groch also took four wickets for Grey High‘s second team as they defended a low total of 167 to beat the Brackenfell first team.

Despite an impressive 5/11 for Ruvan Barnard, HTS Drostdy‘s batsmen were unable to cope with Centurion‘s onslaught as Logan Fourie‘s 4/25 helped skittle Drostdy for only 51.

Jayden Potgieter‘s unbeaten 51 in Centurion’s second outing then sealed the deal for the visitors, who made a strong start to the event.

Roxton Payne and Josh Beck were instrumental in Westville’s telling victory over Garsfontein. The duo combined for seven wickets at the miserly expense of only 22 runs, leaving their Kaeden McAllister an easy target to pick off. He drove the Griffin across the line with an unbeaten 41.

  • St John’s down Paul Roos in big HJS Festival clash

St John’s down Paul Roos in big HJS Festival clash

In a heavyweight battle between two of 2023’s better teams, St John’s College outduelled Paul Roos Gimnasium at Paul Roos on Thursday in an HJS Festival match, recording a hard-fought 18-run victory in a mouthwatering showdown that tilted in favour of the bowling and fielding units.

Evidence of the favourable bowling conditions came from the toss, with Paul Roos choosing to send their Gauteng opposition in to bat first. However, opening batsmen Nkosana Sibiya (feature photo) and Thomas Ievers rose to the challenge to get their side off to a strong start.

They grafted hard for an 83-run partnership before Ievers was dismissed for 31 from 83 balls, caught by Matthew Seymore off the bowling of Dian Winkel.

St John’s advanced their total to 100 before dangerman Joe MacRobert fell for seven. Nkosana followed on the same total for a well-played 54, which would turn out to be the highest score of the day. His knock included seven fours and also lasted 83 deliveries.

Soon, the Johannesburg school was 105/4 after Kago Masote departed for five. Alec Loveland and Jacob Smith then stopped the bleeding, adding 40 for the fifth wicket, before Loveland was sent packing for 12.

Smith played a crucial innings, going on to contribute a telling 38 from 53 balls, which included three big sixes and a single four.

Once the sixth wicket went down with the total on 166, however, Paul Roos quickly closed out the St John’s innings, bowling out the opposition for 174 after 56.1 overs.

Dian Winkel was the pick of the PRG bowling attack, snaring 4 for 41 from 15 overs, while Luca Plekker also proved a handful, knocking over 3 for 13 in 6.1.

Unfortunately for Plekker, he was not as successful with the bat. Opening the innings, he was out first ball as St John’s got off to a rip-roaring start.

Ruben Coetzee and Dylan van Schalkwyk steadied the innings, scoring 30 and 20 respectively, with Coetzee striking five fours, but Paul Roos soon found themselves on the back foot.

Beor van Reenan, in at seven, teamed up with Callum Appollis to stem the flow of batsmen departing for the pavilion after PRG had slipped to 76 for 6 from 24.3 overs. They put on a stand of 59 before Van Reenen was caught by the wicketkeeper Jacob Smith off the bowling of Daniel Bruwer for 33, the top score of the Paul Roos innings.

Appollis followed four runs later, leaving PRG on 139 for 8, having weighed in with 29 from 57 balls, with three fours.

After 53.5 overs, Paul Roos were dismissed for 156.

Daniel Bruwer led the St John’s attack with a return of 3/32 from 11 overs, while Alec Loveland claimed 3 for 44 from 13. Oliver Tait snapped up 2 for 6 from five and Cole Francis, who set the ball rolling with the first wicket of the innings, finished with 2 for 29 from 10.

St John’s returns many of their very successful 2023 side, which lost only eight times in 32 outings, despite playing a tough schedule. Now, with the school having recorded its ninth win in succession since last season, they’ll be a team to watch out for in 2024.
