St Andrew’s vs Peterhouse launches 2024 Makhanda Cricket Festival

The Eastern Province cricket season kicks off on Thursday with the Makhanda Cricket Festival, an annual event co-hosted by St Andrew’s College, Kingswood College, and Graeme College.

Watch the first game live on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to the first match

The festival continues a rich feast of cricket for Makhanda, following on from the 2023 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week, which took place in December, when the Central Gauteng Lions were crowned the champions.

Peterhouse School and Hellenic Academy have made the long trip from Zimbabwe and will face St Andrew’s and Kingswood respectively in their first outings.

Before the event begins for the other schools, Peterhouse takes on St Andrew’s in a two-day clash, starting on Wednesday.

St Andrew’s will be without their three provincial representatives from last year. Matriculants Sibusiso Mxube, Matthew Poole and Matthew Beamish represented College in the Eastern Province team at the Khaya Majola Week on home soil. Mxube subsequently earned himself a place in the Eastern Warriors team for the recently concluded CSA Cubs Week and helped the side to a third-place finish.

At last year’s Makhanda fest, Beamish made his intentions for 2023 clear by scoring two centuries in successive days. His younger brother, William, who was selected for the EP u16 side last year, will seek to emulate that success with St Andrew’s hosting the tournament this year.

Graeme College have lost their long-serving stalwart Aphiwe Mnyanda, who represented EP u19 for three consecutive years before matriculating in 2023.

Trinityhouse High School, will defend Gauteng’s strong reputation in Makhanda. They start their campaign against Graeme College on the opening day, followed by matches against Hudson Park and Kingswood College.

The games begin at 09:00 each day. All of them will be declaration matches, apart from Saturday, when teams may decide to play limited overs fixtures.

Fixtures and teams in action at the Peninsula Cricket Festival

The annual Peninsula Cricket Festival, hosted in Cape Town, kicked off this week featuring 10 of South Africa’s cricket powerhouse schools.

The tournament is underway at Bishops Diocesan College and will conclude on Saturday, 13 January.

It’s one of the first cricket festivals of 2024 and an opportunity for teams to either continue their momentum from the previous year or create momentum for an exhilarating summer of school cricket.

The hosts, Bishops are joined by their fierce Southern Suburb rivals, Wynberg Boys’ High, SACS, and Rondebosch Boys’ High.

Hilton College, led by Ethan van Heerden, had a pretty good run in 2023 and topped it off by defeating Michaelhouse in their annual Pink Drive fixture towards the end of the season.

They’re joined by St Charles College, from Pietermaritzurg, who will also fly the KZN flag.

Gauteng is represented at the festival by Pretoria Boys High, Waterkloof, and St David’s Marist Inanda.

Saturday’s fixtures are especially mouthwatering, with Bishops set to tackle Pretoria Boys High, Rondebosch up against St Charles, Wynberg facing Affies, and SACS doing battle with St David’s. It’s a showdown between KZN and Gauteng in the last of the fixtures, with Hilton squaring off against Waterkloof.

  • Lagadien and Leigh lay down the law against Hilton College

Lagadien and Leigh lay down the law against Hilton College

In a day filled with runs, Adnaan Lagadien scored the first double-century of the new year to lay the platform for Diocesan College‘s convincing 187-run victory over KwaZulu-Natal Inland powerhouse Hilton College.

He dominated the opening day of the Peninsula Cricket Week with a remarkable unbeaten 218 runs.

Thanks to his memorable innings, Bishops put up an intimidating 325/7 in their innings of the daytime cricket matches.

Catch all the action live from the Peninsula Festival live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The shellacking they received in the field was not, however, the end of Hilton’s misfortunes as the Bishops’ dangerman with the ball, Peyton Leigh, ripped the heart out of the Hilton batting line-up, knocking over 7 for 44, as the boys from the KZN midlands were restricted to only 138 all out.

Rondebosch Boys’ High’s Daniel Bosman (106*) and David Simon (102*) also put together a masterclass in longer format batting, with both scoring outstanding centuries. They shared an unbeaten 192-run partnership for the sixth wicket, which enabled their side to declare on 303/5 after 58 overs.

Time, however, caught up to the Capetonians, as the batsmen from St David’s Marist hung on for a draw.

A wonderful 135 runs from Wynberg Boys’ High‘s Divan Linde was countered by a fighting unbeaten 106 by Waterkloof‘s Franco Cronjé and a half-century from the superb Divan Behrens (79). It was, however, an unbroken 134-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Cronjé and Franco Schmidt (28*) which breathed new life into the Klofies’ innings after a long day in the field to secure a draw.

Adam Cannata and Aaeron Edwards’ excellent bowling spells gave Pretoria Boys’ High the upper hand after the first innings against St Charles College. Cian Fortmann was the only one who had any answers with the willow in hand. He contributed the highest score of 47 for Saints in a disappointing total of 126 for the side from Pietermaritzburg.

Pretoria Boys’ High had no trouble chasing down the 127 runs they required for victory. Their opening batsmen, Marc van der Merwe (71*) and Luke Marshall (50*), saw them to a comfortable 10-wicket win.

Affies enjoyed the better of their draw against SACS. They totalled 307/8, thanks to half-centuries by Ruben Groenewald (92) and Henré Smith (69).

    Summarised Scorecards:

Rondebosch Boys’ High 303/5 (Daniel Bosman 106*, David Simon 102*, Daniel Cooke 27, Declan Gillespie 27, Extras 22; Matthew West 2/39); St David’s Marist 156/9 (Kamogelo Phiri 27, Samrat Basu 25, Morteza Manack 22; David Simon 3/29, Declan Gillespie 2/20, Daniel Bosman 2/25). Match drawn.

Affies 307/8 (Ruben Groenewald 92, Henré Smith 69, Vihan Pretorius 44, Andru van Zyl 28, Xavier de Wet 37*; Benji Blackburn 4/68, Nic Nejthardt 2/98); SACS 152/5 (Rowen Taplin 45, Reza Salie 40, Luke Whitehead 23; Nicolai Bester 2/25). Match drawn.

Wynberg Boys’ High 302/8 (Divan Linde 135, Xavier Garvs 53, Michail Tarentaal 49, Joshua Prince 25; Jaydon Blom 3/20, Wian Ruthven 2/71); Waterkloof 265/6 (Franco Cronjé 106*, Divan Behrens 79, Franco Schmidt 28*, Extras 28; Michail Tarentaal 2/38, Ebrahim Fakir 2/36, Luke Kleinsmith 2/43). Match drawn.

Botha se kolf vuurwarm vir Fichies teen Kalahari

    FOTO: Dirkie Groenewald/Absolute Photos

STELLENBOSCH. – The Northern Champions are the undisputed champions of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week (u19) after they finished the tournament as the only undefeated side.

They bagged a convincing 143-run victory over the Southern Superstars on the final day on the Coetzenburg Oval here. The clash served as an unofficial final as the two teams were the only undefeated sides left before the last day, with both having secured 18 log points during the tournament.

The Champions took control early on as their opening batsman Marcus Bakker (93) was in a destructive mood. He needed only 73 deliveries before his stumps were uprooted by Fayyaad Davids (2/26) just seven runs short of a century.

It provided the perfect platform for the Champions to record the highest total of the tournament, an impressive 307/6, in their allotted 50 overs. Bakker shared a partnership of 111 runs with Muhammad Aslam (41) for the second wicket.

Divan de Villiers (58*) and Juan Steyn (36*) also played vital roles as they added an unbeaten 59 runs for the seventh wicket.

The Superstars’ chances received a further knock when they lost their first four wickets with only 42 runs on the board. Champions’ pace merchant Tristan Luus (3/26) led the attack and removed Sibulele Sibanzana and Siyabonga Venge with successive deliveries, with neither troubling the scorers.

Luus finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, twice picking up five-wicket hauls in the Champions’ four matches, which led to him removing 15 batsmen at the cheap average of 10 runs per victim.

William Tshoke (3/26) and Bakker (2/13) also bowled well during their side’s final outing.

The Eastern Warriors secured third place, thanks to a 28-run victory over the Western Legends on Tassies Oval. Their captain, Jean Upman (98), once again led the charge.

He enjoyed an excellent week with the bat, scoring a total of 278 runs during the tournament at an average of 56 runs per innings.

Upman faced a mere 77 deliveries and just missed out on a century. He received good support from Sibusiso Mxube (69).

Another batsman who enjoyed a strong week in Stellenbosch was the Legends’ Ludwich Schuld. He was, yet again, his side’s top scorer with 52 runs and finished the tournament with 291 runs in total, which was the second highest tally of any batsman.

Ryan Denston was the pick of the Warriors’ bowling attack as he sent four batsmen back to the change room at a cost of 40 runs.

The Central Gladiators will feel relieved that they managed to avoid the wooden spoon after a four-wicket victory over the Coastal Conquerors on Maties’ C-field.

The Conquerors were restricted to only 169 runs, thanks to a solid overall bowling effort by the Gladiators. Henricus Meyer (2/15), Jaydon Brooker (2/29) and Boaga Gaoraelwe (2/29) all captured two wickets each.

Meyer (36) also opened the batting for the Gladiators with Tahseen Hanslo (35). They got the team from Gauteng off to a solid start before Tjaart Mentz (30*), Gomolemo Phiri (30), and Brooker (25*) all chipped in to get their side across the line.

    Summarised Scorecards

  • A clean sweep for KZN schools at iHlobo Festival

A clean sweep for KZN schools at iHlobo Festival

    Clifton College vs Uplands College

Clifton College had a very short second day at the iHlobo Festival, being hosted by Kearsney College in Botha’s Hill, with their match against Uplands College lasting just less than 25 overs. It brought the Durban school an eight-wicket victory, which was their third win on the trot at the festival, and already their fifth victory of 2024.

In warm-up matches before the event, Clifton had held off St John’s Harare to claim a narrow three-run win before an easier 48-run victory over Falcon College.

Not much went right for Uplands on Tuesday, although the toss went their way. In retrospect, it might have been better if they had lost it because, after electing to bat, they were skittled for only 33 in 16.1 overs.

Opener Leam van Zyl, with seven, was their top scorer, while first-change bowler Gabriel Vermeulen laid waste to the Uplands innings, capturing 5 for 5 in 3.1 overs.

Shiraz Perumal also shone, snaring 3 for 9 in three, while Tim Saulez picked up 2 for 8 in five with the new ball.

Incredibly, the wickets continued to tumble when Clifton batted as Van Zyl removed Byron Ward and Rivan Moodley with only one run on the board. From there, though, Caleb Naicker took charge, making 19 from 24 balls to see his side to victory in 8.4 overs.

Kearsney College vs St Alban’s College

The hosts, Kearsney College, comfortably dealt with St Alban’s College, cruising to a seven-wicket victory.

The Pretoria school put up 124 for 7 in their innings, with Matthew Ward making 40 before he was run out. Boago Motlhabedi contributed 24 not out and Patrick Weir weighed in with 20.

Wicketkeeper Matthew De Oliveira effects a run out of St Alban's top scorer Matthew Ward, while Murray Weyer watches on.

Matthew Lamplough claimed 2 for 11 in three for Kearsney, whose bowlers kept a tight leash on the St Alban’s batsmen throughout their innings.

The home team then romped to 125 for 3 in their run chase to record a third iHlobo Festival win in a row.

Opener Cameron Veenstra finished with an unbeaten 55, while Matthew De Oliveira made 29 and Jack O’Donovan 26.

    Michaelhouse vs St John’s College

Michaelhouse faced St John’s College of Harare on the AH Smith Oval in a T20 match and came away with a four-wicket victory with 13 balls to spare to also extend their festival record to a perfect three from three.

The Zimbabwean side tallied 138 for 7, with opener Takudzwa Nduku smashing three sixes and a four in his 35 from 47 balls, which was the top score in their innings.

Luke Wright continued his big hitting, also launching three deliveries over the boundary and adding a four, as he clubbed 29 from just 13 deliveries, while Kian Blignaut weighed in with 26 from 25.

Oliver Davis was the pick of the Michaelhouse attack, knocking over 3 for 22 in his four overs. Ethan Muir claimed 2 for 24 in three, while Ross Moller kept the St John’s batsmen quiet, finishing with 1 for 13 from four.

In reply, Michaelhouse made 139 for 6 in 17.5 overs, with Muir, unbeaten on 33, and Luke Payne, 15 not out, seeing their side to victory with an unbroken stand of 53 runs.

Michaelhouse made a lively start, with Seb Hofmeyr and Michael Spencer putting on 43 for the first wicket in a shade over five overs before Hofmeyr fell for 17 at a run a ball. Spencer went on to make 25 from 21.

Michael Blignaut did a tidy job for St John’s, snapping up 3 for 20 in four, while Kian Blignaut took 2 for 18 in his four. Michaelhouse, though, played aggressively throughout, even after wickets fell, and their approach was rewarded with a win.

Durban High School vs Falcon College

Durban High School, beaten by Michaelhouse on day one, tasted victory against Falcon College.

Opener Omar Ismael made an unbeaten 57 to guide DHS to a win over Falcon College.
Opener Omar Ismael made an unbeaten 57 to guide DHS to a win over Falcon College.

The school from Matabeleland batted first and while a number of their batsmen made starts none of them turned those into substantial scores.

Darren Ncube, with 24, and Reed Merick, with 21, were the only batsmen to make it into the twenties. Their total of 136 all-out was not too bad, though, if one considers how much trouble Falcon was in on 39 for 5 after 14 overs.

Taine Havermann spun a web around the Zimbabweans, capturing 4 for 28 in 7.4 overs, and he was well supported by Bhavesh Naicker, who removed three batsmen at a cost of only 11 runs from his five overs.

DHS opener Omar Ismael then set his side on course for victory with an undefeated 57 from 79 balls, which included four fours and a six.

Bradley Wentzel, though, caused the DHS batsmen all sorts of problems, knocking over 5 for 38 in 8.3 overs. But Taine Havermann then provided the steadying influence that DHS badly needed and he, together with Ismael, saw the Durban boys to a five-wicket victory with an unbroken partnership of 94.

    Summarised scores

Uplands College 33/10 (Gabriel Vermeulen 5/5, Shiraz Perumal 3/9, Tim Saulez 2/8); Clifton College 34/2 after 8.4 overs (Caleb Naicker 19*, Leam van Zyl 2/20) Clifton won by 8 wickets.

St John’s Harare 138/7 (Takudzwa Nduku 35, Luke Wright 29, Kian Blignaut 26, Oliver Davis 3/22, Ethan Muir 2/24); Michaelhouse 139/6 (Ethan Muir 33*, Michael Spencer 25, Michael Blignaut 3/20, Kian Blignaut 2/18) Michaelhouse won by 4 wickets.

Falcon College 136/10 (Darren Ncube 24, Reed Merick 21, Taine Havermann 4/28, Bhavesh Naicker 3/11); Durban High School 137/5 (Omar Ismael 57*, Taine Havermann 40*, Bradley Wentzel 5/38) DHS won by 5 wickets.

St Alban’s College 124/7 (Matthew Ward 40, Boago Motlhabedi 24*, Patrick Weir 20, Matthew Lamplough 2/11); Kearsney College 125/3 (Cameron Veenstra 55*, Matthew De Oliveira 29, Jack O’Donovan 26) Kearsney won by 7 wickets.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Fichardtpark 219/4 (Eben Botha 80, Micheal Cruywagen 59, Davyd Oosthuizen 33; Bongi Khumalo 2/28); Goudveld-Hoërskool 178 (Hendro Boardman 81, Munro Heiberg 29, Ruben Crous 28; Davyd Oosthuizen 3/18, Nathen Ackerman 3/35). Fichardtpark wen met 41 lopies.

  • Dudgeon replaces Maphaka at Paarl Royals

Dudgeon replaces Maphaka at Paarl Royals

Kwena Maphaka, the rising left-arm speedster from St Stithians College, has been replaced by all-rounder Keith Dudgeon, who represents the KZN Inland Tuskers in the domestic structure, for the forthcoming Betway SA20.

Maphaka was picked by the Paarl Royals for the second edition of the T20 competition but will miss out on parts of it to represent the South African u19 team at the ICC u19 Cricket World Cup, which is being hosted in South Africa.

He will not be the only one young star affected by the u19 World Cup. His fellow competition rookies, Lhuan-dré Pretorius (Paarl Royals, St Stithians College) and Steve Stolk (Pretoria Capitals, Hoërskool Menlopark), will also be in action for the South African u19 team.

Maphaka’s selection for the prestigious tournament has left a void in the Paarl Royals’ bowling lineup and opened up a spot for Dudgeon, who has performed well domestically with both bat and ball this season.

Dudgeon attended Parktown Boys’ High School from 2009-2013, and represented South Africa u19 in 2014, playing a handful of Youth ODIs against England.

He joins fellow Parktown Boys’ old boy, left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who matriculated in 2008, at the Royals. The pair will hope to feature together during the tournament, especially at The Wanderers, where supporters from their school would, no doubt, turn out in their numbers.

Dudgeon represented Central Gauteng, before making the move down to KZN where he has represented the KwaZulu-Natal Inland team for a number of seasons.

His performances were instrumental in helping the Tuskers earn promotion from CSA Division Two to CSA Division One. Apart from his bowling, Dudgeon hits a clean ball down the order and will be aiming to build on his all-round game.

The Betway SA20 gets underway on 10 January, while the ICC u19 World Cup kicks off on 19 January.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Witteberg 130/5 (Marco Grobler 39, Janco Botha 33, Stefan Geldenhuys 23; Carl Thole 3/18); Hoërskool Kalahari 111/9 (Carl Thole 30*, SW van Heerden 20; Dumisni Johnsen 3/11, Zander Fourie 3/16, Lesego Masikidi 2/31). Witteberg wen met 19 lopies.

Hoërskool Middelburg 113/8 (Reuben Branmulle 34, Herman Potgieter 24*; Liam Theron 2/5, Adrian De Necker 2/18); Jim Fouché 75/3 in 10 bbe. (Lian Theron 41; Hendre Nel 1/9). Wedstryd afgelas.

Voortrekker 120/7 (André Heunis 37, Joel Coetzee 34; M Dreyer 3/30, E Dreyer 2/18); Wesvalia nie gekolf. Wedstryd afgelas.

Hoërskool Trio 112/9 (Miguel Menino 36, Danie Fourie 23; Hanno van Zyl 5/19, Dian Gous 2/30); Hoërskool Pietersburg nie gekolf. Wedstryd afgelas.

Overvaal 67 (EW Botes 15; JM Rensburg 4/11, GJ Wessels 2/6); Goudveld-Hoërskool 45/2 in 4 bbe. (Hendro Boardman 19; Zander Olivier 2/20). Wedstryd afgelas.

HTS Middelburg 141/8 (Anthoni Smuts 38, WJ Enslin 37; Nathan Ackerman 3/26, Michael Craywagen 2/28); Fichardtpark 10/2 (Toy Engelbrecht 2/10). Wedstryd afgelas.

Hoërskool Sasolburg 157/8 (Meyer Pretorius 63, Liam Singleton 44; Luke Julyan 3/24, Tristan Scholtz 3/38); Despatch nie gekolf. Wedstryd afgelas.

Oos-Moot 118/5 (Chrisjan van Staden 41, Elmar Theron 35; Daniel Buys 3/24, Reshe Wales 2/21); Sentraal 16/0 in 3 bbe. Wedstryd afgelas.
