Viljoen stars as Grey College kicks off Diamantveld Cricket Festival in style under the lights at the Diamond Oval

Grey College and Diamantveld opened up proceedings at the inaugural Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival under the lights on the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Friday.

The visitors from Bloemfontein got off to a flying start through their stalwart opener, Juan Viljoen, but the hosts’ spin bowlers did well to contain Grey later on and give their batsmen a realistic target. Grey’s bowling attack was able to cause enough problems for the Diamonds to prevent them from gaining momentum and Grey won the opening match of the weekend by 53 runs.

Viljoen looks to be an extremely exciting T20 prospect for Grey Bloem.

He gave the crowd something to get excited about from the off, scoring 45 from only 22 deliveries, setting the pace with seven boundaries in total with four fours and three sixes.

Viljoen then matched this performance later with the ball in hand, taking two wickets as a bowler and combining well with his captain and wicketkeeper, Hayden Tolmay, for a runout.

His performance in the opening game earned him the man-of-the-match award and he is definitely one to keep an eye on throughout the rest of the weekend.

Darion Rabie also had a solid four overs for the winning team, taking two wickets and conceding a mere 15 runs.

Luhan de la Rey and Nathan Baird bowled very well to contain the visiting batsmen after the initial burst by Grey.

It was a ball by De la Rey that finally dismissed Grey’s talisman, Viljoen, when he couldn’t get a solid connection and Aiden Jacobs took the catch to deny him his half-century.

Though the hosts never really looked on pace to catch the visitors’ total, they played well to see out the 20 overs with Kaiden van Wyk leading their attack with an innings of 27.

This would have been the first time many of these boys got the opportunity to play on the oval, which will stay with them as a cherished memory in the future when some of them will be returning as professionals. Apart from giving the players an opportunity to experience playing in the stadium at night in front of a large crowd, this tournament is also part of Northern Cape Cricket and Diamantveld’s initiative to develop the talent in the area and get the boys playing against some of the strongest teams in the country.

    Summarized Scorecard:

Grey College 150/7 (Juan Viljoen 45, Ruben Maree 31, Samu Lephoto 23, Zack Hattingh 21; Danie van der Merwe 2/39, Kaiden van Wyk 2/44); Diamantveld 97/7 (Kaiden van Wyk 27; Darion Rabie 2/15, Juan Viljoen 2/17). Grey College won by 53 runs.

  • Potchefstroom Gimnasium best in shortest format in North West

Potchefstroom Gimnasium best in shortest format in North West

Potchefstroom Gimnasium claimed the mantle as the best in the shortest format in North West after beating Potchefstroom Volkskool in the North West T20 League Final on Thursday.

The Volkies won the toss and decided to bowl first looking to put the Gimmies under early pressure. However, Tommie Botha and Marnu Cronje had other plans as they counterattacked. Botha was the main contributor to the opening partnership.

The opening batter stood firm as he looked to play the anchor role and set a solid platform for those to come, falling just three runs short of a well-deserved half-century, making 47 of 54 deliveries.

Cronje, however, looked to take on the Volkies attack, making a quickfire 27 from 17 balls before he was sent back to the sheds.

After the opening pair’s departure, Volkies struck with two quick, vital wickets coming from the bowling of the impressive Diaan van der Merwe (2/11). Van der Merwe’s remarkable spell somewhat pulled it back for the Volkies, shifting the pressure back to their neighbours.

Righardt Joubert provided the emphasis needed at the back end with a vital, run-a-ball 25, to help his team reach 124/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Potchefstroom Volkskool also had a wonderful start to their batting innings. Their stalwart southpaw in the top order, Ludwich Schuld, managed to get his side off to a blistering start with his 20 coming from only nine deliveries but had to depart soon after. Schulds’ opening partner, Attie Liebenberg (26, 18b) played wonderfully and together with the top scorer, Louis van Wyk (31, 30b), put Volkies in a comfortable position.

However, an inspiring spell from Christian Viljoen, claiming 3/16, swung the momentum back in the Gimmies’ favour. Viljoen found support from Caiden Seleka (2/9) and Zavier van Rensburg (2/15) as the trio tore through the Volkies lineup, restricting them to 117 all out, with the Volkies falling an agonizing seven runs short of their required target, handing Gimmies the champions mantle of North West.

    Summarised scorecard:

Potchefstroom Gimnasium 124/5 from 20 overs (Tommie Botha 47, Marnu Cronje 27, Righardt Joubert 25; Diaan van der Merwe 2/11); Potchefstroom Volkskool 117/10 from 19.3 overs (Louis van Wyk 31, Attie Liebenberg 26, Ludwich Schuld 20; Christian Viljoen 3/16, Caiden Seleka 2/9, Zavier van Rensburg 2/15). Potchefstroom Gimnasium won by seven runs.

The Middies had to make do with third place at their home tournament but will be hoping to improve on that result this weekend in the absence of Secunda.

Their big local rivals, HTS Middelburg, claimed the Plate last weekend by comprehensively beating Oosterland by 29 unanswered points in the final.

The Blitzbokke will play three games against the All Stars Academy team, starting after the group stage games at 12:50, before playing again after the semis at 14:50 and finally drawing a line under what promises to be an action-packed weekend with the last game at 17:10 after the finals.

The All Stars Academy is based in Pretoria and run by Ludwiche van Deventer, giving school leavers the opportunity to develop both on and off the field and providing opportunities to play rugby on an international platform.
