    Grey is bobaas in Bloemfontein

Double success for Boland Landbou at inaugural Cape Schools sevens festival

Boland Landbou claimed both the u15 and u17 titles this weekend at the inaugural Cape Schools sevens festival in Wellington, getting through some of the top teams in the country on their way to the trophy.

The Boland Landbou boys have shown glimpses of their potential over the previous couple of tournaments but found their rhythm this weekend.

The u17s finished on top of their pool after getting through Forward Foundation (38-0), Hoërskool Durbanville (36-7), Augsburg (53-0) and holding on against an inspired attack by the hosts, Hugenote, to win by 26-17.

In the quarter-finals, they saw away with Hoërskool Bellville by 31-7 before ending the boys from Hoërskool Durbanville’s tournament in the semis with 39 unanswered points.

They played against Paarl Gimnasium in the final, who had to hold on for dear life to survive a late Stellenberg onslaught in the semi-finals.

The Boland boys held a 14-7 lead at halftime, and both teams only managed to score one additional try in the final seven minutes, giving Boland Landbou the 19-14 victory over their big rivals from Paarl.

The u15s won their final against Paul Roos by the same margin, beating the Stellenbosch boys by 24-19 to become the first champions of the brand-new tournament.

The Paul Roos u17s came into the weekend as the favourites after having won the two major tournaments over the last couple of weeks, beating Grey College in both finals, first in Potchefstroom at the NWU Prestige Schools Festival, then in Paarl at the Marius Schoeman Sevens festival.

The boys from Stellenbosch are yet to go through a weekend unbeaten though, and after two weeks of non-stop action, they seemed to run out of steam this weekend losing to Stellenberg first by 7-0 before being knocked out of the Cup competition in the quarter-finals after going down against Paarl Gimnasium by 33-19.

Finally, they met Oakdale in the semi-finals for the Plate, but the boys from Riversdal proved too strong as well, beating Paul Roos by 45-5 to bring an end to their weekend.

With 40 of the top rugby schools in the Cape already competing at this first edition of the tournament, producing top-quality schoolboy sevens rugby all weekend, the future of this brand-new platform looks exciting.

Giliomee stars again as Boland Wynland are crowned Frogfoot Sevens champions at Swartland

The Boland Wynland invitational team stole the show at the Swartland leg of the 2023 Frogfoot Sevens series.

The flyers from the Boland/Wynland region were unstoppable, winning by an average of 39-5 over the six games this weekend, spurred on by the efforts of their exciting SA u18 Sevens player from Charlie Hofmeyr, Luan Giliomee, who was honoured as the man-of-the-match four times over the weekend.

Giliomee earned bronze as part of the SA u18 Sevens team at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year, and received the sportsman of the year award at the proud school in Ceres, along with his sister, Lané, who was honoured as the sportswoman of the year.

Their little brother, Ruben, has also already shown that he will follow in his siblings’ footsteps, catching everyone’s attention last week at the Marius Schoeman u12 sevens tournament in Paarl, where he finished off a brilliant individual try to win the final for Gericke Primary School.

Brent Simmons and Marno du Plessis also stood out for the winning squad, and HTS Drostdy’s Harold Mbuqa was selected as the player of the tournament.

The HTS Drostdy boys played well to get to the final, getting by a promising Montagu team in the group stage by 20-7 and fighting off an inspired Strand attack in the semis by 26-21 to book a spot in the final.

The representative team, however, put on another masterclass in the grand finale to beat the school from Worcester and secure the bragging rights as well as a spot at the Frogfoot Champions tournament in Pretoria in October.

Judging by the success of the teams from the Western Province, and particularly the Boland/Wynland regions this season, they should go into the championship tournament as one of the favourites, despite not having had the benefit of playing together all season like most of the other teams would have.

HTS Drostdy managed to go all the way in the u15 tournament, beating the Paul Roos Invitational team by 24-14 thanks to a man-of-the-match performance by Anvil Jacobs.

The hosts, Swartland, were also punching above their weight this weekend, doing well to keep Strand to a 12-all draw in the group stages and beating a promising Montagu by 29-24 in the Plate semi-final before going on to claim the Plate at their home competition after a thrilling 19-17 battle against Hoërskool Punt in the final.

JH Kleinhans was singled out as the player-of-the-match in that game. Kailen Kotze and Liam Anthony also stood out for Swartland over the weekend.

  • Ford drives St John’s to victory on Jeppe’s Beckwith Oval

Ford drives St John’s to victory on Jeppe’s Beckwith Oval

    PHOTO: Theo Garrun

St John’s College allrounder Chris Ford played a crucial knock of 85 runs from 92 balls to put his side in the driver’s seat as he steered the visiting side to a crucial 47-run win over hosts Jeppe High School for Boys.

Jeppe won the toss and sent in the visiting side, hoping to capitalize on the early morning conditions and making use of any juice in the pitch on the Beckwith Oval.

Fast bowler Jerimiah Marshall took 2/44 from his nine overs which included castling over opening batsmen Nkosana Sibiya.

The tall all-rounder Ford, coming in at number eight had his work cut out for him, as the rest of the line-up struggled to score runs after experiencing a slight collapse in the middle-order, Ford batted at just under a run-ball.

He was well supported by Cole Francis (34, 49b) who shared in a 65-run partnership to guide the side to a respectable total of 256.

Ford, having a cracker of a match, was instrumental in the second innings, picking up a wicket in his first over of the second innings, putting Jeppe on the backfoot, right from the onset.

First change bowler Malan Du Plessis, bowled well picking up figures of 3/28 from his 6 overs which included a wicket-maiden in the 20th over, reducing the home team to 54/5.

Staring down a mammoth task in front of the lower order, Chris Elston and Jerimiah Marshall shared in a brilliant 99-run partnership, for the 8th wicket. Both batters scored half-centuries for their team, but would have needed to kick-on to see their side through to the end.

With the tail wagging slightly the St John’s bowlers wrapped up the innings with Cole Francis (3/40) making the important breakthrough to remove Elston for 61 runs from 71 balls, which included six fours and one six.

Jeppe would have felt that the number of extras that they bowled in the first innings potentially was the difference in the match, plus the two dropped catches of Ford. The Jeppe bowlers sent down 36 extras, which included 29 wides compared to St John’s who were slightly more disciplined only leaking 11 extras.

    Score:

St John’s College 256/10 from 47 overs (Chris Ford 85, Cole Francis 34, Extras 36; Jerimiah Marshall 2/44, Tino Mutekwa 2/52, Ryan Harcourt-Baldwin 2/46); Jeppe High School for Boys  209/10 from 48.3 overs (Elston 61, Marshall 50, Extras: 11; Malan Du Plessis 3/21, Cole Francis 3/40, Chris Ford 2/35). St John’s College won by 47 runs.

Two new faces for this year’s North/South T20-tournament as well as a new sponsor

The annual North/South T20-tournament will have two new faces and a new title sponsor in 2023.

Selborne College of East London as well as the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria (Affies) will make their debut at this year’s tournament. They will replace Northwood of Durban and St Andrew’s College of Makhanda in this prestigious tournament.

The Westvaal Motor Group will be the new title sponsor from 2023 taking over from We Buy Cars who was the main sponsor from the inaugural tournament back in 2018.

Selborne College has produced one Protea in the former wicketkeeper as well as Protea-coach, Mark Boucher. Affies has been turning out cricket talent during the last two decades with AB de Villiers, Jacques Rudolph, Neil Wagner, Faf du Plessis, Roelof van der Merwe, Kruger van Wyk and Dewald Brevis all being former pupils of the school.

Affies will join Menlopark, Centurion, Waterkloof, St Andrew’s School (Bloemfontein), Potchefstroom Volkskool, Hoërskool Nelspruit and St Stithians College as the team that will represented the northern region.

The southern schools are Grey College, Grey High School, Paarl Boys’ High, Rondebosch Boys’ High, SACS, Westville Boys’ High, Wynberg Boys’ High and Selborne College.

Waterkloof is the defending champions after defeating Potch Volkies in last year’s final.
