  • Gauteng Development League | Round 27 Preview

Gauteng Development League | Round 27 Preview

JOHANNESBURG.– SuperSport United head into the weekend fixtures looking to bounce back from an uncharacteristic defeat to 14th-placed Wits Junior last weekend as the u19 division of the league draws closer to its end.

Round 27 of the Gauteng Development is set to get underway this coming weekend as the chasing pack in the u19 division looks to close the gap on the log-leaders Highlands Park.

With more or less seven fixtures remaining in the season for most of the teams, the league is heating up as teams look to secure spots in ‘Africa’s best development league.’

Following the one-nil defeat to Wits Junior last weekend, SuperSport United have slipped down outside the top-five for the first time in the league.

The ‘Matsatsantsa aPitori’ will be eyeing to force their way back into the top five when they take on seventh-placed TS Galaxy this weekend, and looking at the form Galaxy is in, it will be by no means an easy fixture.

On the other-hand, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are level on points at the moment and are separated by goal-difference, which the Soweto giants have working in their favour as they sit second on the log-standings.

Sundowns have a tricky assignment this weekend as they prepare to take on bottom-placed Joburg City, a team that’s looking to revive their 2023 campaign following their 4-1 victory over Panorama FC last weekend.

As history has it, bottom-placed teams tend to have a lot more to fight for towards the end of the season and thus Sundowns find themselves with a rather steep challenge coming their way.

Chiefs will take on Prestige Football Development Academy this weekend while fourth-placed School Of Excellence are set to lock horns against a high-in-confidence Wits Junior.

    Round 27 Fixtures 16 September 2023:

Highlands Park Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports School
    Mamelodi Sundowns Joburg City
Kaizer Chiefs Prestige Football Development Academy
    Randburg AFC Kagiso Porto Academy
    School of Excellence Wits Junior

  • Trekkers se sewesspan is bobaas in Bethlehem

Trekkers se sewesspan is bobaas in Bethlehem

    FOTO: Memories 4Ever Photography

Who will wear the crown at the Western Cape leg of the Frogfoot Sevens series this weekend at Swartland?

The Frogfoot Sevens series reaches the penultimate qualifying rounds this weekend when Swartland hosts the Western Cape leg of the prestigious competition.

Along with the bragging rights, the winners this weekend will qualify to compete at the Championship Tournament in Pretoria on the 14th of October.

Paul Roos Gimnasium have proven themselves to be the foremost u17 sevens team in the country at the moment, after two consecutive victories in major tournaments over the last couple of weeks.

What makes this achievement even more special for the proud boys from Stellenbosch is the fact that they beat their fiercest rivals, Grey College, in the final of both tournaments.

Paul Roos was crowned champions at the inaugural NWU Prestige Schools Sevens tournament in Potchefstroom two weeks ago, when they beat Grey by 22-19 after a massive second-half comeback.

They then repeated the trick at the prestigious Marius Schoeman Sevens festival at Paarl Gimnasium last weekend, this time seeing away with the boys from Bloemfontein with a comprehensive 33-10 victory.

The Maroon Machine will be competing at another tournament making its debut this weekend when they travel to Wellington to participate in the Cape Schools Sevens festival, so an invitational team will be representing them at the Frogfoot tournament.

The likes of Strand, Worcester Gimnasium and  Milnerton will see this as a golden opportunity to upset the giants from the Winelands, especially since the quicker format of the game makes it possible for some of the smaller teams to cause big upsets.

With only seven men to defend, and only fourteen minutes to play, the smaller teams tend to find the playing field much more equal and we can expect some exhilarating action this weekend as the speedsters in the Western Cape lock horns.

    The groups are:

Pool A – Swartland, Strand, Melkbosstrad, Dirkie Uys, Hexvallei.

Pool B – HTS Drostdy, Montagu, Schoonspruit, Vredendal, Vooruitsig.

Pool C – Paul Roos Invitational, Boland Wynland, Jakes Gerwal, Vredenburg, Ashton.

Pool D – Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Milnerton, Punt, Worcester Gimnasium, Wesbank.

  • Nelspruit too good for Secunda in Mpumalanga-league

Nelspruit too good for Secunda in Mpumalanga-league

Hoërskool Nelspruit proved to be the superior team on the day when they crossed swords against Hoërskool Secunda in their group stage match of the Mpumalanga League.

Nelspruit won the toss and decided to send Secunda in to face the music on a lively early morning wicket. The home side’s decision proved to be the right one as the Nellie’s bowlers made some early inroads with Davico Kruger (2/30) claiming one of his two wickets with Secunda’s score on only 34.

Alonzo Blankerberg shook off the early loss of his opening partner and worked hard to bring some stability to the Secunda innings, scoring a mature 39 of 84 deliveries. The frustration continued for the visitors as their batters worked hard to get off to good starts but lost their wickets soon after, falling under the severe pressure being applied by Kruger and co.

With Secunda finding themselves in all sorts of trouble, the lower order batter, Ceeja Webb, kept his composure and decided to go on the attack making a blistering 32 of only 21 balls. Webb’s important cameo helped the visitors cross the 200 mark as they ended up with a total of 210 all out.

Nelspruit’s innings got off to a solid start with both openers holding down the fort, laying the platform needed in their chase of 211 required for victory. Although two runouts caused a bit of panic in the home side’s dugout, the dangerman with the ball Davico Kruger capitalised on his form with the ball to contribute a marvellous 56 of 81 balls.

But it was the man of the moment, Luke Poisson, who showed his experience, sending the ball to all parts of the ground, breaking the back of the run chase. Poisson’s 70 of only 61 deliveries proved to be instrumental as it got the home side across the line comfortably, coming out victorious with 7 wickets.

    Summarised scorecard:

Secunda 210/10 (Alonzo Blankenberg 39, Ceeja Webb 32, Marco du Toit 30, Kian van Niekerk 25, Jayden Parrot 20; Davico Kruger 2/30, Nicholas Grobler 2/26, Vaughn van Zyl 2/39); Nelspruit 211/3 (Luke Poisson 70, Davico Kruger 56, Nathan D 30, Jayden Meyer 28; Nathan Ellis 1/33). Nelspruit won by seven wickets.

The winners this weekend qualify for the Champions Tournament in Bloemfontein where they will be competing against some of the best in the country.

While fewer schools are competing this weekend than at some of the other stops in the series, there will be no lack of excitement as some of the strongest teams from the North West lock horns.

The hosts will have to navigate the likes of Wagpos, Helpmekaar and Trinityhouse for a shot at the title.

In pool B, only two teams out of Noordheuwel, Dinamika, Marais Viljoen and St Stithians will make it through to the Cup semi-final.

Every game will be crucial this weekend and every decision the players make could be the difference between ending their season or advancing to the Champion of Champions-tournament.
