  • Paul Roos look for trifecta as top Cape schools gather at inaugural festival in Wellington

Paul Roos look for trifecta as top Cape schools gather at inaugural festival in Wellington

Some of the best schools sevens teams in the Western Cape gather in Wellington this weekend for the inaugural Cape Schools Sevens Festival at Hugenote.

Catch every moment of the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to tournament

Though this will be the first instalment of what will hopefully become a yearly event, the quality shown by the competing teams over the last couple of weekends promises a weekend of stellar schoolboy sevens.

The reigning NWU Prestige Schools and Marius Schoeman Sevens Tournament champions, Paul Roos, will have a target on their backs as they look to take their third trophy in as many weeks.

The boys from Stellenbosch have had a couple of slow starts to their tournaments though, and are yet to finish a weekend unbeaten.

They will hope to change that this weekend, but face some serious challenges in their pool in the likes of Stellenberg, Curro Langebaan, Porterville and a wildcard Paarl Boys’ High Invitational team, any of whom could easily cause an upset.

The two players who were singled out as the players-of-the-tournament in their previous two campaigns, Junaid Coetzee and Gert Kemp, are definitely ones to watch this weekend, but there are a number of other dangermen as well.

Samuel Badenhorst, the big first-team flank, represented the country as part of the SA u18 Sevens team at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago where they earned bronze behind only Scotland and Fiji. He has put his experience to good use for the Maroon Machine since the sevens season began.

Keenan Stoffels is another livewire with a bright future in either format of the game. He and Kemp scored two tries each in last weekend’s 33-10 victory over their old rivals, Grey College.

That was the second weekend Grey lost to Paul Roos in the final, and the boys from Stellenbosch have proven themselves to be among the foremost u17 sevens teams in the country at the moment.

That is the nature of these sevens tournaments, and one of their major attractions, as the gulf between the top schools in the country and some of the smaller schools is narrowed in the quicker format.

The home team shares a group with an in-form Boland Landbou side and Hoërskool Durbanville, who have been punching above their weight all season.

Hugenote made it to the Cup quarter-final at last weekend’s event, where they ran into Paarl Gimnasium and lost by 40-12.

Boland Landbou made an exit in the same stage, narrowly losing against Boishaai by 27-22.

A lot of effort has gone into ensuring that this weekend’s event is filled with entertainment for the spectators according to Dirkie Gildenhuys of Cape Schools Sevens.

There will be live music, food and drinks, screenings of the World Cup games, a playpark and entertainment for younger children and top-quality schools sevens. The aim is to contribute towards building the sevens platform in South African schools rugby, alongside some of the established tournaments like the Marius Schoeman Sevens and to expand to include more sporting codes in the coming years.

At this first instalment, there will already be 40 of the top rugby teams in the country competing in the u15 and u17 sevens tournaments.

“The main goal of this event is to give some smaller teams the opportunity to face some of the best teams in the country, this year we have two development teams competing at this event, and we have a few bursaries from the WP Rugby Institution which we will be able to award. We hope to turn this into an event that showcases the best up-and-coming talent” says Gildenhuys.

Garsfontein los die uitklophou ter elfder ure teen Affies by Montana o.17-sewestoernooi

St. Charles sweat hard to book place in One Insurance Eston Schools T20 Night Series

St Charles College had to sweat hard in their One Insurance Eston Schools T20 Night Series Semi-Final against Westville Boys High on Thursday night.

St Charles won the toss and decided to wield the willow first. It was soon apparent that the conditions were not as easy as it had been for the earlier semi-final between, counterparts, Hilton and Maritzburg College, as the side from Pietermaritzburg got off to a prolonged start.

Sam Brown laid the platform for the St Charles side with a well-constructed 30 of 31 deliveries at the top of the order before he was sent back to the pavilion by the impressive Blake Simpson, who proved to be the dangerman with the ball for Westville, claiming tremendous figures of 3/12 in his allotted four overs.

Matthew Urquhart (28, 32b) and Marcell Wellman (25, 26b), both made significant contributions to help the Pietermaritzburg side to what seemed to be a below-par first innings total of 124/4 in their 20 overs.

The Westville innings proved that conditions were extremely difficult for the batters as they struggled in their chase of 125 to book a place in the final against Hilton College. Losing wickets at an alarming rate it was up to Max Robertson, who seemed to be batting on a different pitch, to try and get his team across the line.

Robertson managed to smash the ball to all parts of the ground in his 38 of only 21 deliveries before he fell victim to Cian Fortmann (2/21).

Fortmann enjoyed the support from his colleagues, Nathan Beaumont (2/20) and Brandon Sunguroo (2/23), as the trio broke the backbone of the Westville batting lineup, ensuring that the men from Westville were bundled out for a meagre 106 all out, as the Pietermaritzburgers booked their place in Thursday Night’s final against Hilton College.

    Summarised Scorecard

St Charles College 124/4 (Sam Brown 30, Matthew Urquhart 28, Marcell Wellman 25; Blake Simpson 3/12); Westville Boys’ High 106/6 (Max Robertson 38; Nathan Beaumont 2/20, Cian Fortuin 2/21, Brandon Sunguroo 2/23). St Charles College won by 18 runs.

Reminiscent of days gone by, it was Louis Koen who stood out for the Paarl Gimnasium side as they stormed to a 22-12 triumph.

He was excellent throughout the tournament and set the pace in the final to help his team along to their second successive victory in their home tournament.

Thomas Saunders was also in phenomenal form throughout the weekend, earning him the player-of-the-tournament award for his efforts.

Boland Landbou did well to score twice against the champions who conceded only a single try on the first day, but they simply could not contain the hosts.

En route to the championship, Paarl Gimnasium saw away with Paul Roos Gimnasium in the quarter-finals in an epic battle, where the hosts walked away victorious by a single point, 20-19.

Both of these proud schools had unbeaten seasons with their u15 15-man teams, with their only draw coming when they played against each other.

In fact, the first time the Paul Roos u15 boys tasted defeat in any format of the game was against Paarl Gim last weekend at the Bredasdorp Sevens tournament when they lost by 21-7 in the semi-final.

Stellenberg will be proud of their bronze medal position after beating a tireless side from Hermanus by 17-14. Both of these teams exceeded expectations to top the rest of the competition and make it all the way to the semi-finals before bowing out to the two Paarl giants.

In the Plate final, HTS Drostdy from Worcester played exceptionally well to get one over their big rivals from George, Outeniqua.

The Donkies beat the Kwaggas by 21-12.

Swartland are the Bowl champions after getting past a very promising Worcester Gimnasium team by 17-7 in the final.

  • Andrews stars for DGC to retain u16 Water Polo tournament in dramatic final

Andrews stars for DGC to retain u16 Water Polo tournament in dramatic final

Durban Girls College stalwart Kayla Andrews produced a performance for the ages when she scored two late goals to help her side retain the u16 Water Polo tournament hosted by her school in Sunday’s final against Roedean schools.

The home side, who were paired up in Pool A alongside, Reddam House Constantia, St Mary’s Kloof, Durban Girls High and Oka Valkyries enjoyed a good outing during the weekend winning three of their four pool matches.

In the process, the hosts scored a whipping 27 goals and only lost to Reddam House Constantia, and St Mary’s Kloof respectively.

That set the home side up for play-off matches against Herschel, and another encounter against Reddam House Constantia.

The home team, who would’ve been in high spirits considering their form and the backing of their supporters convincingly won both of those clashes. In their second face-off against Reddam House, they outscored the visitors by six goals to two.

Before that, the defending champions edged Herschel by one goal when they held on for a (5-4), and in the process booked themselves a spot in the final against Roedean, who was also a tough side to beat throughout the weekend.

The final was always going to be a tough encounter between the two giant schools. In last year’s edition, Roedean didn’t participate in the tournament whilst the hosts were looking to go back-to-back.

It was a cagy start, and it showed with both sides finding it hard to score against each other in the pool. Both teams defended well in the early exchanges.

The opening goal of the final came with just over five minutes to play. Roedean managed to get a penalty just outside the home side’s box. Stepped up number nine, Gabriella Morell, and calmly slotted the goal in to take the lead for her side.

The visitors would soon add to their tally when number four, Ambrin Mcewan found herself in a good position and shrugged off one defender to flick the ball in the far corner, leaving the keeper with no chance.

That would be the last time Roedean found the back of the net, as the home side made a remarkable comeback.

With under three minutes to play, Kayla Andrews drew one back for the home side giving them hope, but very little of it. Faith was restored even more when Lara Mervis found herself in a good position to score her side’s second goal, much to the approval of the home crowd.

The miraculous comeback was finished off by Andrews, who scored a penalty for her team after one of the Roedean defenders gave away a silly penalty with just under a minute to go.

The home side held on to the one-goal lead to win the trophy after looking dead and buried late in the second half.

In other matches on the final day, Reddam House Bedfordview defeated Reddam House Umhlanga (4-0) to finish in ninth place.

Rhenish lost (4-2) to St Dominic’s to finish eighth, while wins for Reddam House Constantia, and Herschel saw them end the tournament in third and fourth place respectively.

  • Almost a full squad of Saffas in action for other countries during the Rugby World Cup

Almost a full squad of Saffas in action for other countries during the Rugby World Cup

    DUHAN VAN DER MERWE (Outeniqua)

No less than 16 rugby players that will be in action during the World Cup in France that are not playing for the Springboks completed their schooling careers in South Africa.

Eight of the 16 players will represent neighbouring Namibia at the World Cup. They are Tiaan Swanepoel (Stellenberg), Oela Blaauw, Adriaan Ludick (both Paarl Gimnasium), Le Roux Malan, Damian Stevens (both Paarl Boys’ High), Tiaan de Klerk (Monument), Torsten van Jaarsveld (HF Verwoerd), and Aranos Coetzee (Boland Landbou).

De Klerk could’ve been one of two former Monnas’ locks at the tournament, but France’s Paul Willemse was ruled out due to a thigh injury. He however is still on the list of replacements for the French squad if experience any injury woes during the tournament.

De Klerk did start his high school career at the Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool before moving with his coach Wynand Moolman to Krugersdorp. The French also get their kick from Vlok Cilliers who matriculated from Canarvon in the Northern Cape. Cilliers, also capped by the Springboks, is the hosts’ kicking coach.

The Springboks will open their campaign to defend their title against Scotland on the 10th of September in the Stade Velodrome in Marseilles. The Scots have four South Africans in their squad of which three will be in action against the Springboks tonight.

Duhan van der Merwe (Outeniqua), Pierre Schoeman (Affies) and WP Nel (HTS Drostdy) will play against the Springboks, while Kyle Steyn (Trinityhouse, Randpark Ridge) is the other Saffa in the group. Van der Merwe’s brother Akker played for the Springboks, while Steyn’s father Rory was Nelson Mandela’s bodyguard.

Nel interestingly comes from a small town in the Northern Cape called Loeriesfontein, which is almost four hours drive away from Canarvon (Vlok Cilliers) in the same province. Hoërskool Calvinia also produced another international player in Mouritz Botha. The former English coach is currently the head coach at Bedford School in England.

The other four South Africans in action during the World Cup is Dave Ribbans (England), Pieter Labuschagne (Japan), Sebastian Negri (Italy) and Rob Herring (Ireland). Ribbans attended Somerset College just outside of Somerset West before leaving for England after school.

Labuschagne was part of the Grey College side of 2007 that brushed all before them. Negri was born in Zimbabwe but attended Clifton Prep in Durban before finishing his schooling career at Hilton College. Rob Herring is a SACS old-boy.

Kotaro Matsushima, fullback of Japan, was also born in South Africa. He completed his primary schooling career at Graeme College in Makhanda before he left to finish his schooling career in Japan. Another Japanese player Dylan Riley was born in Durban but his family left for Australia before he started school.

  • Paul Roos win their third Marius Schoeman u17 Sevens Cup with comprehensive victory over Grey College

Paul Roos win their third Marius Schoeman u17 Sevens Cup with comprehensive victory over Grey College

Paul Roos Gimnasium and Grey College faced one another in a final for a second time in two weeks, as the age-old rivals met again in the grand finale of what has been another spectacular weekend of sevens at the Marius Schoeman u17 Sevens tournament at Paarl Gimnasium.

Unlike last weekend though, the Maroon Machine dominated the entire match as they solidified their place on top of the sevens rankings with a comprehensive 33-10 victory over their arch-nemesis.

It took only 20 seconds for Grey College to strike when Philip Mclaren dove over for the first try of the final.

While Paul Roos only found their rhythm in the second half last weekend, Keenan Stoffels responded immediately for the Stellebosch side, breaking away to run nearly the length of the field scoring under the posts allowing his team to gain the lead after the successful conversion.

Gert Kemp then repeated the trick, scoring another beautiful long-range try.

With their tails up, Stoffels added another to give Paul Roos a 21-5 lead after four minutes.

The Bloemfontein giants are never stunned for too long though, and McLaren could relieve some of the scoreboard pressure with his second thanks to brilliant interplay by Alzeadon Felix and Pieter van der Merwe.

Kemp also completed his brace just before halftime to take the Stellenbosch side into the break with a 26-10 lead.

Though Grey did well to stem the flow of points in the second half, Stoffels needed only three minutes after the action resumed to complete his hat trick and seal the victory for his team.

Benjamin van Rensburg, Felix, Van der Merwe and Ethan Adams looked exciting for Grey, but Paul Roos simply outplayed their old rivals and removed any doubt about who the forerunners are in South African u17 sevens this year.

Samuel Badenhorst, the big Paul Roos flanker who was part of the SA u18 Sevens team that won bronze at the Commonwealth Youth games in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year, showed that he definitely has a future in the quicker format of the game should he choose to pursue it.

Badenhorst was immense for the Stellenbosch side this weekend, along with Stoffels, Kemp, Matthew Klein, Reuben Kruger and Junaid Coetzee.

Coetzee backed up his player-of-the-tournament award from last weekend with another scintillating performance this weekend.

This weekend, Gert Kemp was honoured with the player-of-the-tournament award. Kemp is only in grade 10 this year and will be one to watch over the coming seasons.

Along with the prize money and bragging rights, the champions also earn a spot in the Championship tournament which will be held at Grey College in October, where the two sides may very well complete the trilogy if their paths are fated to cross again.

After this weekend, however, there can be no doubt that while Grey was unmatched during the regular 15-man season, Paul Roos is the top dog of u17 Sevens at the moment.

The new champions almost had their campaign cut short in the quarter-finals by the boys from Stellenberg though.

Two yellow cards for Paul Roos Gimnasium early in the first half of the Cup quarter-final allowed Stellenberg to go into the break with a 12-5 lead.

The Jade Brigade failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage in the second half though, and it was Paul Roos who scored first to draw the scores level again.

After the initial slow start, the Maroon Machine regrouped and took control of the game, scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half to win by 26-12.

They then continued with that momentum to eliminate the hosts in an epic semi-final.

Paul Roos Gimnasium took the lead early against the Paarl Gimnasium thanks to two tries by Coetzee and Stoffels.

Just like last weekend, the Stellenbosch side proved to be a great tournament team, playing their best rugby when it mattered most.

As the pressure mounted both teams lost their discipline a bit, Paarl Gimnasium was reduced to five men and Paul Roos went down to six by the end of the game. The visitors maintained their control of the game to book a rematch of last weekend’s final against Grey College with a 27-7 victory.

Paarl Boys’ High and Boland Landbou traded blows throughout their quarter-final matchup.

It looked like Lyle Lewis delivered the knockout punch with a late try for Boland, but their big local rivals managed to draw it equal in the dying moments when Ivan van Zyl burst over to send the game to sudden death.

Boishaai then finally booked their place in the penultimate round through a try by their flyer, Leevano Cupido, who has been excellent for them throughout the weekend, ending the game at 27-22.

The hard-fought battle might have taken its toll on the team from Paarl though, as Grey College ended their tournament relatively comfortably in the semis by 47-5.

Though Gimmies couldn’t defend their title at their home tournament, they will be happy to have gotten one over their big rivals, Boishaai, in the third-place playoffs, beating their neighbours by 28-15.

SACS played excellently to get to the Plate final, where they saw away with the Paarl Barbarians by 33-7.

Hoërskool Durbanville came up just short against Strand in the Bowl final. Strand beat the Durbies by 28-21.

  • Gericke are the u12 Marius Schoeman Sevens champions for 2023

Gericke are the u12 Marius Schoeman Sevens champions for 2023

Gericke Primary School from Ceres overcame all odds last night to beat Outeniqua by 12-10 in the Marius Schoeman u12 Sevens-tournament in Paarl to be crowned champions.

The u12 boys set the tone perfectly for what is a jam-packed weekend full of exciting rugby.

In an epic finale to what had been an amazing day filled with the best barefoot rugby in the country, the Gericke boys fought doggedly to the end to upset the big boys from George.

Ruben Giliomee scored a sensational try to give his team the advantage. He was aware enough to spot the space in the backfield and after taking a penalty quickly and hoofing the ball upfield it was a foot race, which he was never going to lose.

The name should ring a bell for South African school sports lovers, his big brother, Luan Giliomee, was part of a very impressive Charlie Hofmeyr first team this year and was selected as part of the SA u18 Sevens team that earned bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago earlier in the year.

His sister, Lané, is an equally accomplished athlete, captaining the Western Province Netball team, and excelling in the 400m hurdles. She is also the deputy head girl at Charlie Hofmeyr, where young Ruben is sure to follow in his siblings’ footsteps, where both Luan and Lané were honoured as the sportsman and sportswoman of the year at the proud school in Ceres this year.

There was very little to separate the two teams throughout the match, tied at 5-all at the break, and both scoring only one additional try in the second half, the difference was the fact that Gericke scored under the post, allowing them an easy conversion, and then defended brilliantly to make life difficult for the boys from George.

When they finally got over the line they had to make do with the little bit of space left in the corner, and the conversion from the touchline was much more difficult, ultimately leaving them two points short.

Paarl Boys’ Primary beat an impressive team from Noord-Eind in the final for the Plate by 27-7, and two-time MS Sevens u12 champions, Bastion, had to settle for third place this year, after beating Durbanville in the playoffs with 24 unanswered points.

Last year’s champions, the hosts, Paarl Gimnasium, finished second best in the Bowl competition this year after they ran into the Bastion B-team and lost by 22-14.

Finally, Welgemoed took the Shield home after their 29-21 triumph over WA Joubert.

The action continues today with the u15 and u17 teams taking the field, and if the juniors were any indication of what to expect, you would not want to miss any of the games today.
