Paarl Gim and Paul Roos get through pool stages untouched at the Marius Schoeman u17 Sevens-tournament

Paul Roos Gimnasium and Paarl Gimnasium got off to a flying start on the first day of the 2023 Marius Schoeman u17 Sevens-tournament on Friday.

Neither team conceded a single try throughout the group stage and enter the playoffs as the favourites.

The home team scored a massive 193 points over their three games against Tygerberg, Brackenfell and Vooruitsig.

Grey College are the second-highest-scoring team in the group stage. They scored 148 while only conceding 10, and definitely also look on form before the knockout stages.

The proud school from Bloemfontein made it to the finals of the NWU Prestige sevens tournament in Potchefstroom last weekend unbeaten, until Paul Roos pulled off an amazing second-half comeback. After being down 19-0 at half time, the Maroon Machine ended up winning that match, and consequently the inaugural title, by 22-19.

SACS played really well to end second in Group G, after ending all square against the group leaders, Boland Landbou, at 19-all and beating Charlie Hofmeyr (17-0) and Melkbosstrand (24-0) for an opportunity to compete for the Cup quarter-finals.

Group D produced an equally thrilling contest.

Stellenberg and Outeniqua couldn’t find a winner when they met, they also drew at 19-all. After the Jade Brigade then ran 55 unanswered points past Paulus Joubert, it meant that the Kwaggas would need to beat Connect Academy by 68 to finish on top of the pool on points difference.

They gave it their all, but came up just short of their huge target, beating their final opponents by 56-0.

The action continues today as the hosts pick up with their campaign to defend their title from last year. Paul Roos were the first champions back in 2017 and Boishaai won both the 2018 and 2019 editions.

Grey College, Outeniqua, Stellenberg, Boland Landbou and SACS are all still on track for the trophy though, and the beautiful thing about sevens is that it levels the playing field and anyone could win.

A lot can happen on a rugby field in 14 minutes, and from this point on in the tournament, every mistake could have major consequences, as we enter the elimination phase.

While some of the favourites, like Paarl Boys’ High, Oakdale and the hosts, Paarl Gimnasium, reasserted their dominance before the Round of 16 playoffs tomorrow morning, there were also a few unexpected results.

In group C, Forward Foundation went unbeaten over HTS Drostdy, Strand and Hoërskool Bellville.

This means HTS Drostdy will need to get through Boland Landbou tomorrow for a spot in the Cup quarter-finals, as they end second in their pool.

There was nothing to separate Paul Roos Gimnasium and Stellenberg in their fixture.

After Robert Hewitt scored a sensational try to draw the first blood for Stellenberg, the Paul Roos boys fought back hard to draw level at 12-all.

The u15 team from Stellenbosch went unbeaten during the regular 15-man season, and their sevens teams experienced their first loss last weekend at the Bredasdorp Sevens Tournament against this weekend’s hosts, Paarl Gimnasium by 21-7 in the semi-final.

They finish on top of their pool because they have the best point difference, beating Stellenberg by a single point.

Both still have a chance to progress to the Cup quarter-finals tomorrow where either could very well go all the way. Stellenberg will need to get past Paarl Boys’ High tomorrow though, and Paul Roos face Outeniqua.

Hilton College book place in One Insurance Eston School T20 Night Series Final

    PHOTO: Justin Waldman

Hilton College managed to book their place in next week’s One Insurance Eston School T20 Night Series after coming out on top against Maritzburg College on Wednesday evening.

Maritzburg won the toss and decided to bat first. Looking to put up a competitive total for a strong Hilton batting line up the Maritzburg men went hard from the get-go, losing a few quick wickets in the process.

Ross Boast proved to be the dangerman for Hilton as the all-rounder claimed figures of 2/26 in his allotted four overs.

For Maritzburg it was Caleb Thomas who got his teams’ innings back on track with a splendid 57 including seven fours of only 46 deliveries at a strike rate of 126.

Thomas was well supported by Middle-order batter Bryan Brokensha, who contributed with a much-needed cameo of 33 of 31 balls to help his side to a total of 144/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Hilton’s innings got off to a relatively slow start as they too lost some early wickets in their quest to reach the target of 145 needed for a place in the final.

Michael Gibson proved to be the main thorn in the side for Hilton’s top order claiming figures of 3/18 in his 4 overs.

With wickets falling around him, Charles Swart kept his composure and stepped up to the plate to make an unbeaten 60 of 50 deliveries. His teammate Ivan Jjuuko played an important supportive role as the middle order batter made 29 of 28 balls.

The pair’s contributions were deemed to be enough as Hilton chased down the required target in the 19th over to book a place in the final against either, Michaelhouse or St. Charles’ College, next week.

    Summarised scorecards:

Maritzburg College 144/5 (Caleb Thomas 57, Bryan Brokensha 33; Ross Boast 2/26); Hilton College 148/4 (Charles Swart 60, Ivan Jjuuko 29; Michael Gibson 3/18). Hilton College won by six wickets.

  • Hoërskool Pietersburg continue their dominant run in Limpopo, Merensky thump Nkowankowa

Hoërskool Pietersburg continue their dominant run in Limpopo, Merensky thump Nkowankowa

Hoërskool Pietersburg continued their dominance in the Limpopo Super League after beating Ben Vorster convincingly by 178 runs on Saturday in Tzaneen.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on what seemed to be a batter-friendly wicket. Opening batsman, Philip Weterman laid a solid foundation with his 42 of 64 deliveries as the Pieties got off to a good start.

All the batters from Pietersburg managed to get good starts but found a way to lose their wicket just as the partnerships started to look threatening.

It proved to be the turners who held the key for the Vossies as Njabulo Maseko (2/30) led the fightback with a good bowling display.

It was not until, Drian Hartslief (32, 35b) and Zandré Hattingh (45, 60b) got together that the Pieties really hit their straps and a clear shift in momentum took place. The pair’s partnership of 68 laid a solid foundation for Zandré van Rooyen to set their innings alight with an aggressive 63 of 51 balls to lead his team to a total of 266/8 at the end of their allotted 50 overs.

Van Rooyen impressed again. This time with the ball in hand. The fiery allrounder stormed in to have the home side in hot water early on, claiming four scalps for only 20 runs. The Vossies seemed to have no answer for the onslaught from Pietersburg with Ndzalama Mushwana top scoring with only 17 runs behind his name as the home side was bundled out for a meagre 88 runs to hand Pietersburg yet another convincing win.

Merensky got back to winning ways after claiming a thumping victory against Nkowankowa Hub on Saturday in Tzaneen.

The home side won the toss and elected to bowl first. A decision that proved to be the right one as they almost immediately had Nkowankowa in serious trouble. Off-spinner Rinaldo Bornman led the way with his impressive figures of 3/20. Supported by the ever-impressive swing bowler, Luka Heinlein (2/14), Merensky managed to bundle the visitors out for only 71. Ntshunxeko Malangana deemed to be the only shining light as he top-scored with 16 of 16 deliveries.

Meresnky chased down the small score in the 15th over with only three wickets down. Heinlein showed his class with the bat making 17 of 40 balls. Support from his older statesman, Alfred Nel (16, 25b) helped the Plasies to a convincing seven-wicket victory.

Hoërskool Ellisras had yet another field day in the Waterberg League as they chased down 300 set by Hoërskool Nylstroom with only two wickets down. Nylstroom’s bulk of their runs came from a breathtaking 161 of 145 balls by opening batsman Jannes van Zyl.

For Ellisras it was their stalwart, Gerdro Grobler, who notched up his second century for the season, blasting 143 of only 116 balls. His colleague, Mohau Tswidi (99, 112b), also put up another classy display as the top order batter fell just one run short of his second century for the season as the pair helped their team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.

    Summarised scorecards:

Pietersburg 266/8 (Zandre van Rooyen 63*, Zandre Hattingh 45, Philip Weterman 42, Drian Hartslief 32; Njabulo Maseko 2/30, Tristan Buglass 2/24); Ben Vorster 88/10 (Ndzalama Mushwana 19; Van Rooyen 4/20, Hattingh 3/22). Pietersburg won by 178 runs.

Nkowankowa 71/10 (Ntshunxeko Malangana 16; Rinaldo Bornman 3/20, Luka Heinlein 2/14, Timothy Baker 2/16, Carel Jacobsz 2/2); Merensky 73/3 (Luka Heinlein 17, Alfred Nel 16*; Believe Zitha 1/9). Merensky won by seven wickets.

Nylstroom 300/9 (Jannes van Zyl 161, Lukas van der Merwe 68; Alec Bester 4/31, Gerdro Grobler 2/30, Edward Johnson 2/39); Ellisras 302/2 (Gerdro Grobler 143, Mohau Tswidi 99; Daniel Briel 1/42). Ellisras won by eight wickets.

The Proteas World Cup squad and their schools

The Proteas will face a tough ask when they travel to India for the ICC ODI World Cup which starts on the 5th of October.

The men in Green and Gold’s first hurdle will be a very unpredictable Sri Lankin side at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Dehli on the 7th of October.

Even though these young men are now representing their country at the highest level, most will look back and speak with great gratitude about where it all started to develop in high school.

One of the premier cricketing Schools in the Highveld and South Africa will boast with the most representatives in the 15-man squad traveling to India in hopes of bringing back a World Cup for the first time in the nations history.

Top order batter Rassie van der Dussen and highly rated keeper batsman, Heinrich Klaasen, will proudly wear the mantle of  Hoërskool Menlopark old boys. Van der Dussen also did a post-matric at Affies.

Captain and top order batter, Themba Bavuma, will lead the side as the only representative from St Davids Marist in Johannesburg as he looks to find form with the willow again.

Two of the world’s best in their respective fields, Quinton de Kock who hails from King Edward VII School and Kagiso Rabada from the well-known St. Stithians will play a vital role to the Proteas’ success

Aiden Markram whose journey started at Cornwall Hill College and later finished at Pretoria Boys High will feature heavily in the middle order for the Proteas as the classy batsman looks to play a massive role in the success of the South Africans.

Alongside Markram, Maritzburg college old boy David Miller will send shivers down many bowling attacks’ spines as the power hitting specialist looks to set India a light.

The fiery paceman from Uitenhage, Anrich Nortje, will be watched closely by the youngsters from Hoërskool Brandwag as he will be their only representative. The same goes for Reeza Hendricks as his humble beginnings at Hoërskool Noord-Kaap in Kimberley has seen him become one of the rainbow nation’s best batters in the business.

  • Paarl Gim and Paul Roos look like favourites for the u15 title at this year’s Marius Schoeman 7s Festival

Paarl Gim and Paul Roos look like favourites for the u15 title at this year’s Marius Schoeman 7s Festival

The fifth annual Marius Schoeman Sevens Festival takes place this weekend at Paarl Gimnasium where some of the best schoolboy talent will be on show with cream of the Western Province rugby crop will be competing along with some visitors from further afield like Hoërskool Outeniqua from George and St Andrew’s College from Makhanda for the prestigious title.

Don’t miss a moment of the action on SuperSport Schools – Register now Link to tournament

Paul Roos won the u15 tournament in 2022 and that group seems to have evolved into one of the favourites in the u17 competition this year after claiming the inaugural NWU Prestige Schools sevens tournament in Potchefstroom last weekend.

This year’s event promises endless action with the quality of the competing teams and the scale of the tournament meaning every game matters.

The home team won the u15 tournament in 2019 and looks like one of the favourites coming into this edition again with an unbeaten season for their u15 team in the regular season this year.

The reigning champs’ u15s have also gone unbeaten this year though, so expect an epic matchup if these two cross paths during the knockout round.

Both Paul Roos Gimnasium’s and Paarl Gimnasium’s u15 squads beat all their opponents this year, with the only draw coming when they faced each other.

There’s a lot of work to do before they can start worrying about the playoffs though, as there’s no guarantee of qualifying for the Cup knockout games.

Paul Roos shares a pool with Stellenberg, who are more than capable of causing an upset, and Swartland and Tableview, who could also surprise anyone on the day.

The Gimmies need to get through the visiting St Andrews College as well as Parel Vallei and Jan van Riebeeck.

Paarl Boys’ High are also in a tough group, Outeniqua has looked really strong in their centenary year and Paulus Joubert prides themselves on their skills in the quicker format of the game.

Saturday’s knockout games will be confirmed after the conclusion of the group stage on Friday.

    The pools are:

Pool A – Worcester Gimnasium, Bosmandam, Connect Academy, Hermanus.

The biggest schools sevens tournament in the country kicks off on Thursday when Paarl Gimnasium hosts the Marius Schoeman Sevens Festival.

The hosts’ u12 team won the tournament last year after beating their neighbouring rivals, Paarl Boys’ Primary in the final.

Bastion was the champion in 2019 and 2018.

Every year, the junior teams compete for bragging rights and prize money, as well as a sought-after scholarship to the prestigious Paarl Gimnasium for one lucky player in the winning team.

Two-time champions, Bastion, and last year’s finalists, Paarl Boys’ Primary, share a pool this year, meaning only one of them can advance to the playoffs for the Cup which sets up a huge battle when these two face each other at 14:00 on the Stofberg field.

The reigning champs, Paarl Gimnasium, are grouped with Durbanville Primary, Kenridge and Drakenstein.

Because of the quality of the opponents and the scale of the event, no one can afford any mistakes during the group stages.

The playoffs will commence on Thursday as soon as the pool games have been concluded.

    The pools are:

Pool A – Worcester Primary, Hugenote Primary, Forward Foundation, Panorama.

Pool B – Durbanville Primary, Kenridge, Drakenstein, Paarl Gimnasium.

Pool C – Gericke, Hugo Rust, Hendrik Louw, Noord-Eind.

Garsfontein come out on top against Affies, Centurion triumph over Prestige College

NewsGDewaldBrevisGarsfontein managed to come out on top against their old rivals, Affies in the Titans League on Saturday.

Affies won the toss and elected to bowl first. A decision that most certainly deemed to suit Garsfontein on home soil, as the Garsie-batsman laid down the law.

Reuben van Zyl was the main contributor as the opener pilled on the runs at a brisk pace. He was finally sent back to the pavilion with his score on 113 of only 78 deliveries.

His opening partner, Dumisani Motshene, also had a good day with the willow, contributing a mature and well-constructed 71 off 95 balls.

Just as the Affie bowlers, led by Heinrich Muller (3/70), started to make some good inroads, Eckard Struwig strode to the crease to swing the momentum back in his side’s favour, blasting 55 of only 28 deliveries to guide Garsfontein to a very imposing score of 369/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

The Affie batters followed the example set in the first innings as they too got off to a very good start with the bat. The opener, Lukas Janse van Rensburg showed his class with a wonderful knock of 106 at more than a run a ball having faced only 102 deliveries.

Van Rensburg was well supported by Divan de Villiers who contributed 40 runs of his own to go with his impressive bowling figures of 2/82. But the festivities were short-lived as Stefan van Staden (4/55) and Xander Venter (2/29) tore through the Affie batters to restrict the home side to only 306 all out, claiming a very impressive 66-run victory.

Hoërskool Centurion also got off to a good start claiming a solid victory of 25 runs over Prestige College away from home. Centurion won the toss and decided to have a bat first.

After a rocky start and a few early wickets by the impressive Teko Modiba (3/41) the visitors finally hit their straps as Divan van Tonder (73, 105b) and Rehan Lues (52, 47b) steadied the ship. Supported by a good knock of 24 of 61 balls by Anton Stassen they managed to work their way to a competitive first innings total of 224/8.

Still enjoying somewhat of the momentum, the men from Prestige looked in a comfortable position in their chase of 225 to win, with Modise Maloka laying the foundation with his 62 of 81.

Contributions by Lethabo Kunene (35, 28b) and Morati Lefhiedi (31, 36b) further helped the cause, but it was deemed not to be enough as Rehan Lues continued his momentum gained with the willow to claim impressive figures of 4/23.

Wouter Kielblok also walked away with figures of 3/46 as the pair claimed seven scalps between them to ensure a hard-fought victory.

    Summarised scorecards:

Garsfontein 369/9 (Reuben van Zyl 113, Dumisani Motshene 71, Eckard Struwig 55, Logan Weetman 32, Mohammad Aslam 25; Heinrich Muller 3/70, Divan de Villiers 2/82); Affies 306/10 (Lukas Janse van Rensburg 106, Divan de Villiers 40, Andru van Zyl 32, Jorich van Schalkwyk 30; Stefan van Staden 4/55, Xander Venter 2/29).
