  • Wesvalia verhang bordjies teen Eldoraigne, Die Anker steeds onoorwonne in Bowl-afdeling

Wesvalia verhang bordjies teen Eldoraigne, Die Anker steeds onoorwonne in Bowl-afdeling

Sy slot Ruben Herbst was weer uitstekend.

    Puntemakers:

Wesvalia 36 (19): Drieë: Teboho Sekonyela (3), Franco Dumond (2), Hennoh Visser. Doelskoppe: Rickart van Heerden (3). Eldoraigne: 20 (6): Drieë: Johan Coetsee, Xander Marx. Doelskoppe: Reynier Kidson (2). Strafdoele: Kidson (2).

  • Hudson Park end season with fourth consecutive win as they defeated Cambridge by 43-12

Hudson Park end season with fourth consecutive win as they defeated Cambridge by 43-12

NewsGHudsonParkHudson Park were wasting no time to get things started on Saturday, finding a break in the defence less than two minutes in, Babalo Mtshini offloaded to Likho Gidi, Gidi faked a pass right and it was try time for Hudson.

This was one of many successful plays that would lead to a 43-12 victory.

Jacyl Wright kept the momentum going when he made the conversion, bringing the score to 7-0.

Hudson were brushing off tackles with determination to reach the finish line. Mtshini once again broke through when he deflected the tackle attempt from Cambridge and offloaded to Gidi. Gidi would not let the vicious take down stop him, he made it over the line and scored his second try of the game.

Using the scrum on Cambridge’s two metre line as a decoy, Hudson once again found an opening in Cambridge’s defensive line, the left field was wide open for Qiqa Qwesha who was waiting for the pass and made the quick trip to try town.

The conversion was good and the game was now heavily skewed in Hudson’s favour.

Cambridge found their opportunity for retaliation when they won their lineout in Hudson’s red zone, pairing that with a decoy of their own, with a fake offload diversion to Bongani Cele from Sibongintsika Maki, making the real pass to Lina Mtatase who scored Cambridge their first try and put them on the board.

Maki made the conversion, and it was now 19-7.

Hudson were showing a lot of unity and coordination in their plays, the ball would not be released without knowing its final destination.

Getting within five metres of Cambridges try line, they set off a great set of passes from Msuthu Mbane, to Luthando Yase and finally a quick offload from Yase to Dante Mey who dived ahead for the try.

Wright would go on to not only succeed in the next conversion, but also follow that up with a try.

Halftime arrived with a score of 31-7.

Hudson entered the second half with the same level of energy, a brilliant interception from Qiqa Qwesha stopped the opposition in their tracks and led to him scoring the opening try of the second half and his second of the game.

Cambridge fought at Hudson’s try line against some solid defence, Solam Jamela eventually broke through and scored Cambridge their second try.

Mtshini would score Hudson their final try of the game, after creating many opportunities and defending Hudson’s line relentlessly, he capitalized on an opportunity of his own and brought the score to 41.

Jacyl Wright put the final conversion over and Hudson took the victory at 43-12.

Hudson Park High School 43 – Tries: Likho Gidi (2), Qiqa Qwesha (2), Dante Mey, Jacyl Wright, Babalo Mtshini. Conversions: Jacyl Wright (4). Cambridge High School 12 – Tries: Lina Mtatase, Solam Jamela. Conversion: Sibongintskia Maki.

Grey College outplayed Paul Roos Gimnasium in Bloemfontein to bring a perfect end to the perfect season with a 28-20 victory over their old rivals.

The historic Bloemfontein rugby factory has produced another special group of players this year who deserve to join the elite list of Grey College squads to end their season with a 100% winning rate.

Thanks to a brace of tries each by their eighth man, Keegan Scholtz, and hooker, Liam van Wyk, and the extras added expertly by their winger and captain for the day, Martin Botha, the Grey College first team ended the 2023 season with 16 wins in 16 games.

Scholtz was covering the back of the scrum, and Van Wyk was tasked with the goal-kicking duties because of the shuffled squad that had been entrusted with seeing out the season in the big derby, as six of Grey College’s regular starters were unavailable because they had been selected to the SA u18 team who triumphed against England (33-19) later that afternoon.

Their influential captain, JJ Theron (eighth man), was not available for the match, along with Ranon Fouche (prop), Jean Erasmus (prop), Christiaan van der Merwe (scrumhalf), Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) and Marno Stopforth (lock).

Paul Roos lost their big lock, Riley Norton, to the national squad, but Norton will be back in action in the maroon jersey next year when he is in matric.

The boys from Stellenbosch fought valiantly, and the kicking boot of their star flyhalf, Lee-Jay Petersen, kept them within range of the top-ranked side in the country, ultimately to no avail, as the home team outmuscled Paul Roos and simply powered their way out of trouble.

Paul Roos beat Grey in Stellenbosch last year by 34-19, but since losing in the final of the World Schools Festival at the end of 2022, this Grey side has been unmatched.

The losing captain, Andreas Oosthuizen (flanker), and their sole try scorer, Ryan Jack (prop), were both in the team that beat Grey last year.

Jean-Henri Smith (flanker) also played in that game and got his retribution this year. Smith had an excellent game, along with the other Grey College loose forwards, Scholtz and Juan Venter (flanker).

The Grey legacy passes on to capable hands, as proven by the grade 11 hooker, Van Wyk’s contribution to his team’s success.

His little scrumhalf, Phillip Mclaren, was all over the field and handled himself expertly, and the big forwards all stood up to the challenge and dominated the visitors up front.

Paul Roos had some success with their driving maul, which led to their big prop, Jack, crashing over for their try, but Grey replied almost immediately, doing the exact same thing to the visitors, and never really let go of control of the game after that.

Petersen’s goal-kicking was immense, and that kept some pressure on the hosts, especially early in the second half when he got them to within three points.

Grey began preparing for this season in 2022 when they sent a team without matric students to compete at the World Schools Fest, where they made it to the finals, losing to Hamilton Boys’ High from New Zealand.

The extra time spent as a group paid dividends and Grey looked to be a step ahead of the competition from the very first game of the season.

They beat Hoërskool Trio 38-10 early on, and kept that form for the rest of the year, barely ever looking like they could lose.

Hoërskool Outeniqua did well to keep it tight, but even with a home-field advantage, in their centenary year, the Kwaggas came up short by 19-17.

Grey beat the two teams vying for the second spot on the rankings relatively comfortably, getting by Paarl Gimnasium with a 33-12 victory at the North/South Tournament in Pretoria and taking everything Garsfontein had to throw at them at the Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley, and still winning by 23-9.

They also put up a record 60-19 against their age-old rivals, Affies, in Bloemfontein, as the local crowds got to celebrate their heroes on home soil for the first time after the school holidays.

Finishing the season with a perfect record and having six players selected to the national youth squad seems a fitting reward for what has been another remarkable year for Grey College from Bloemfontein.

France end International series with the whipping of Province in Paarl

PAARL.- The France u18 team produced an emphatic performance, scoring 47 points in the second half to clinch an resounding 85-20 win over a Western Province Invitational side in their final match of the u18 International series on Saturday at Paarl Boys’ High.

The French came into the clash high in confidence on the back of their impressive (37-24) victory against South Africa on Tuesday, whereas Province were thumped (78-15) by England in their first encounter at Stellenberg High School on Tuesday.

Province however, started brightly, getting onto the scoreboard as early as the second minute, when the home side managed to get a penalty in the opposition’s 22-meter line and opted to go to touch for a line out.

That decision proved to be a smart one, as the home side used their forwards to maul and overpower the French defence resulting in hooker Dean Janse van Rensburg scoring the opening try of the match.

Province built momentum from that score, showing signs of improvement in their scrums, accuracy in their clearance kicks and with their wings chasing passionately.

The French, however, weren’t going away and after struggling to capitalize while in Province’s half a couple of times, finally opened their tally in the 12th minute through eighth man and skipper, Ellyjah Ibsaiene who barged his way over the whitewash after several phases and relentless pressure by his side near Province’s try line.

Province were certainly not backing down from the challenge, and after forcing an error from a French player who failed to roll over after making a tackle, the home side were gifted a penalty in front of the poles and stepped-up Daniel van der Merwe to calmy slot it in and regain a three-point lead early in the match.

The two teams, both playing attacking rugby went on to score a try a piece as Province winger, Freek De Kock and France’s inside centre, Quentin Valentino dotted over to make matters even with 15 minutes left in the half.

The visitors then took the match by the scruff of its neck, and scored three unanswered tries through wing, Tom Leveque, scrumhalf, Temanatua Boichot, and centre, Quentin Valentino getting his second of the game to see the visitors take a 38-13 lead at the break.

Looking to build momentum from their first half showing, France started the brightest and after camping in Province’s half for the first few minutes scored through prop Ruben-Diego Pargade. The visitors were not done, as they reached the 50 mark in the 45th minute when the loosehead prop, Edouard-Junior Jabea Njocke barged his way over the whitewash from close range.

If 50 points was anything to go buy, the visitors turned up the tempo even more, and with Province suddenly unable to make tackles, ran rampant in the last 15 minutes of the match.

Tom Emery scored his second of the match, with Tom Leveque grabbing his hat trick in style after chasing down his own kick from his half. Left wing Melvyn Rates also got in on the action, scoring a late brace.

Province finished the match on a high with a second try from Freek De Kock but the dominant second half display resulted in the French claiming an 85-20 win, and in the process ended their international series on a high.

Centre, Quentin Valentino received the man of the match accolade for his two tries scored.

    Scorers:

France 85 () – Tries: Tom Leveque (3), Quentin Valentino (2), Tom Emery (2), Melvyn Rates (2), Ellyjah Ibsaiene, Temanatua Boichot, Ruben-Diego Pargade, Edouard-Junior Jabea Njocke, Conversions: Diego Jurd (6), Luka Keletaona (4). PAARL.- SA u18 head coach, Katleho Lynch applauded his team’s gritty performance after they managed to nail and outsmart an unbeaten England side (33-19) in the final round of the u18 International series at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday.

Watch all the action from the u18 International Series again on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com). Broadcast brought to you by Investec.

The host nation came into the clash looking to redeem themselves after losing (37-24) against France in their opening match of the series against an England side that set their horizon on completing a clean sweep having thumped France (41-0) and Western Province (78-15) respectively in their two matches.

South Africa, similar to the start against France were on the backfoot early on when the home side failed to win back a line-out throw inside their half, and with the turnover ball, England stringed a couple of phases which resulted in lock, Junior Kpoku finding his way over the whitewash to open the scoring.

The host nation were quick to respond, and in the 12th minute hit back with a well-worked try by the backline to see vice-captain, JC Mars dot over for his first of the series.

The South Africans however, still showed cracks in defence, allowing England to play in their half with ease, and subsequently, they were made to pay.

After JC Mar’s score, England retained the ball from the kick-off and used their forwards to gain momentum over the advantage line. From the ruck, Flank, Ronan Daniell squeezed in outside centre, Nick Lilley who ran in under the poles untouched.

The two sides then got into a try scoring tussle, with centre Gino Cupido going over for the hosts before England’s Toby Baker restored clarity to cut the gap short and see South Africa lead 21-19 at the halfway mark.

The home side also had a try disallowed after the buzzer hit when the referee judged Siphosethu Mnebelele’s try as a double movement.

The second half proved to be tactical, and well calculated by the host nation.

Not only did they prevent England from scoring again, but the home side ran in two more tries through captain, JJ Theron, and wing Scott Nel to extend their lead by 14 points and stay out of reach.

England continued to pose a threat, but Lynch’s side controlled the tempo of the match, and despite losing Cupido and JC Mars to injury late in the half managed to hold on and seal a 33-19 win.

“Yeah, I’m absolutely stoked, I think the boys have done what we asked them to do,” said Lynch reacting to the match.

“We spoke a lot this week about character, pride and leaving the jersey in a better place and working for the guys that’s next to you, and I think the boys showed that today, it was a great performance.”

The turnaround for South Africa in their two matches was only three days – having played France only on Tuesday. Lynch despite that, made several changes to his starting fifteen, giving players an opportunity while keeping the team cohesion alive.

He admits that he had to use a different strategy to make sure the team was ready for the clash.

“When you get to campaigns like this, it’s important to have the philosophy of “less is more,” he added.

“You have to plan a little bit better; you can’t have two sessions everyday – so focus rather on less field time and more walkthroughs – it’s one of the best ways to actually coach, especially for the players because it’s at a slower pace.”

“That was the focus for us, and watching a lot of footage and I’m just glad it paid off today.”

The crop of the team that featured for the team in this series will likely be included in the u20 training camps for next year’s World Rugby u20 campaign.

The series, besides being an annual event, was also used to ensure that players were ready for international rugby when they take a step up in their career. Lynch believes the group of players they have will slot right in that system.

“The takeaways (from the series), as we’ve been saying throughout is just trying to plan for the future, and focus on the next u20’s, confirming talent, I think there was a lot confirmed today and throughout the two days,” added Lynch.

“We are really blessed with the players, groups, and depth that we have, and taking guys onto the next level. Getting them into the u19 academy, SA Rugby academy, and hopefully the Junior World Cup, that was the goal.”

    Scorers:

South Africa 33 (21) – Tries: JC Mars, Gino Cupido, Cheswill Jooste, JJ Theron, Scott Nel. Conversions: Kyle Smith (4). England 19 (19) – Tries: Junior Kpoku, Nick Lilley, Toby Baker. Conversions: Angus Hall (2)

PRETORIA. – Cilliers Vijoen, jou doring!

Garsies se heelagter, Jason Hugo, was uitstaande.

Mentoe seals the double for Bishops over SACS

NewsGBishopsDiocesan College showed immense character to claw their way back in the second half against SACS to be in the position that allowed their star fullback, Gilermo Mentoe to convert a penalty in the dying moments to secure their 27-25 victory against their rivals in the oldest rugby derby in the country.

With a rivalry that stretches back as far as 1892, the two proud southern suburb schools take great pride in the yearly competition between them.

With this victory, Bishops complete the double over SACS this year, having also beaten them earlier in the season by 31-25 on the Piley Rees field.

SACS dominated the first half, getting to the break with a healthy 22-10 lead, but the Bishops boys were untiring, spurred on by another top-class performance by Mentoe.

The home team scored their final points just over five minutes into the second half when Bishops found their rhythm and ran 17 unanswered points through to pull off a stunning comeback victory.

Bishops’ electric centre, Nic Allison, kept their hopes alive with a well-worked try in the first half, but it was up to his fullback, Mentoe, who has been phenomenal all season, to make the difference.

Mentoe scored two tries, two conversions and a penalty to add 17 points to his team’s score, with the final three coming at a crucial moment after the playing time had elapsed to give Diocesan College the lead when it mattered most.

The hosts’ fullback, Aya Machuli, also stood out and got over the line for SACS along with his two loose forwards, Niche Koopman (eighth man) and Richard Skeeles (flanker), but it was ultimately not enough to deny Bishops.

Rondebosch Boys’ High had to sweat for their victory against Wynberg Boys’ High in Rondebosch.

A try by their big, stalwart prop, Justin Amos, converted by the trusted boot of their left winger, Ethan Gordon, saw the home team go into the break leading by a single point.

Though there were four more tries scored in the second half, they would protect this margin for a 21-20 victory, which set them up perfectly for their big clash against Bishops to bring an end to the season next weekend.

Wynberg fought valiantly, with their flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, leading the charge for his team once again with his educated kicking boot.

They will definitely also want to see out their season on a high when they host SACS next weekend.

These results also add to the excitement of the final leg between Bishops and Rondebosch Boys’ High next weekend. Both teams have only lost once against their southern suburb rivals. Bishops slipped up against Wynberg last weekend, losing 27-20 on their home field, while the Rondebosch boys lost against Bishops by 13-8 in Rondebosch.

The return leg promises another classic to bring an end to what has been an extremely impressive season for the Cape Town schools.
