Hoërskool Upington: 15 Ruwin Isaks, 14 Khayalenkosi Maganga, 13 Sylvester Hoffman, 12 Siphe Msebenzi, 11 Louwan Harper, 10 Emlyhn Jacobs, 9 Neil Petro, 8 Jaco Fourie, 7 Sipho Livingi, 6 Roedolf Duraan, 5 Johan Louw, 4 Ruan Janse van Rensburg, 3 Niel Visser, 2 Roelof Slabbert, 1 PA Karsten.

Duineveld: 15 Gregon Jansen, 14 Jacquin Jasson, 13 Wyndham Bouwer, 12 DJ Wandrag, 11 Shamaro de Klerk, 10 Ethan van Zyl, 9 Franco Erasmus, 8 Ean le Rich, 7 Alek Andrianatos, 6 Freddie Collen, 5 Gert-White Grobbelaar, 4 Arno Luttig, 3 Ethan Prins, 2 Rayvain Wessels, 1 Chris Honiball.

  • Candies search for inner lion to hunt down Witbulle

Candies search for inner lion to hunt down Witbulle

Can Pretoria Boys’ High School emulate the heroics of the sides before them such as the class of 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2019 – finding themselves on the winning side of this epic classic clash against Affies?

There is a saying be weary of the injured bull, but more importantly one should be weary of the hungry lion.

With not much to lose, The Candies will be itching to go, as they face a strong Witbulle side away this weekend with the first XV kicking off at 13:30.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Twenty years ago, in 2003, the current Sharks defense coach, Joey Mongalo captained a Boys High side which featured the likes of Chiliboy Ralepelle to an emphatic 18-6 victory which ended an 18-year drought, which could inspire the current crop of players to pull off a similar feat.

If one was to critically analyze the facts as it stands; two out of these winning teams (2003 and 2005) were coached by Paul ‘The Lion’ Anthony, and again in 2019 when he was appointed as Director of Rugby.

What is more interesting if you dive deeper into the history of these two schools, when Mr Anthony was the first XV scrumhalf, Pretoria Boys High School tasted victory in 1976. The school won 19-9, after a four-year losing streak prior to that.

With a long affiliation against his nemesis Affies, he provides great perspective and guidance to the boys, on what it is like to come from a position of loss into the possibility of winning and how to seize the moment.

Looking at the present two sides one would feel the sides have both probably performed slightly under-par this year based on their results. Both squads on paper at the beginning of the year, looked very competitive with a number of provincial representatives forming part of a strong Blue Bulls set-up.

Both teams have recently lost to Maritzburg College, Boys High going down 43-12, while Affies suffered a 50-31 loss at home the week before. The hosts however beat Hoërskool Waterkloof by 57-31 last weekend and will look to take forward that momentum.

Affies, South African Schools player Janco Purchase makes a return to the side after missing out against Maritzburg College, after having been bitten by a spider. The inside center is quick to the ball and has a good match awareness.

The Candies remain without their preferred number 10, Tattersall who is still sidelined due to an injury. Winger Itu Baloyi misses out this weekend also due to injury, while Jermaine Chisanga makes it into the starting XV, and gets an opportunity to showcase his talent on the wing.

In what is expected to be a physical match-up, keep an eye on the forward packs, where the size advantage of Affies may play a significant role. Captains Steyn Truter and Shaun Schürmann will come toe-toe when they face each other in the scrums, where both players know each other well, having played together at Craven Week.

    Long-Standing History

The first encounter took place in 1923 after Affies split from the original Pretoria Boys’ High, with Boys High initially dominating, where the schools faced each other on three separate occasions in that year. The Candies won the inaugural clash winning that match 6-3.

However, Affies gradually gained momentum, and from the seventies onward, they started to dominate the encounters – making life difficult for the boys across the railway.

Over the years, they have played 120 games, with Affies winning 69, Pretoria Boys’ High securing 42 victories, and 9 matches ending in draws. During the COVID pandemic the 2020 clash between the two schools was not played, the only other time matches that have been cancelled were in 1944 during the second World War and in 1957 during the great flu pandemic.

With a long history behind these two schools, one can feel the tension brewing across the railway line in the build-up to this hotly contested match. Affies will walk into this fixture as favorites having won a higher percentage of their matches compared to the visitors.

Perhaps the roar of ‘The Lion’ can motivate the Candies on what it is like to taste victory in this hugely anticipated South African schoolboy rugby derby match which dates back 98 years.

Expect a large crowd to gather where the stands will be packed with old boys from schools pouring in to watch. Hold onto your seats, as another classic clash awaits!

    The teams:

Affies: 15 Migael de Lange, 14 Stephan Brits, 13 Theuns Maritz, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Eagan Roux, 10 Ruben Pienaar, 9 Hendre Schoeman, 8 Ruan Lippold, 7 Juan Vorster, 6 Braam Swanepoel, 5 Jonathan Eloff, 4 JD Hattingh, 3 Ethan Van Dyk 2 FC van Rooyen, 1 Steyn Truter (captain).

Dale and Selborne celebrate 131 years of rugby rivalry at their rematch on Saturday

In a tradition that has spanned three centuries, Dale and Selborne come together for their second game of 2023.

The first encounter took place on the 20th of May, with Selborne taking a 31-23 victory on their home soil.

Dale will look to even the score as they host Selborne this Saturday.

Queen’s has proven time and time again that they are a team to be reckoned with this year. With 13 victories so far for 2023, it is clear that they can hold up against any competition that is put before them.

  • Durbies look to assert their dominance in the northern suburbs against Brackenfell

Hoërskool Durbanville and Brackenfell battle it out for supremacy in the northern suburbs on Saturday when they meet in Durbanville.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Both teams have had impressive seasons and this game will go a long way to determining who the top dogs in the area really are.

Durbies have put up more than 50 points against five of their opponents this year and can boast with some big names on the list of teams they’ve beaten, including a historic 26-25 victory against Paarl Boys’ High earlier in the season, and the likes of Rondebosch Boys’ High (35-19), HTS Drostdy (61-3) and Hoërskool Bellville (72-12) more recently.

They are without their star centre, James Nero, who is in Trinidad and Tobago where he will be competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games as part of the SA u18 Sevens team from Sunday but they have more than enough pace in the backline to cover for him this weekend.

Valrhino Olckers (fullback), Sean Klein (flyhalf) and Jayden Nell (eighth man) are some of the other speedsters to look out for in the Durbie team this weekend, and their scrumhalf, Monray Daars, ties it all together expertly and guides the attack.

Nell already received and signed a contract from SARU Sevens committing him to the South African Sevens setup for next year.

Brackenfell won 10 games in a row this season, before having their streak broken last weekend when they came up short 21-14 against Hugenote in Wellington.

They will need to bounce back quickly and be at their best this weekend to contain a Durbanville side who have punished any signs of weakness this season.

The visitors’ vice-captain and centre, Xavier Valentine, has shown that he can also get around the pitch and will be valuable for Brackenfell on Saturday.

Among the forwards, lock, Tiaan Crous and captain and eighth man, Raiden Rodney, are two players to keep an eye on as the Brakkies will look to dominate the contact point to control the pace of the game against Durbanville who will want to keep the ball alive and in the hands of their backline.

    The teams are:

Hoërskool Durbanville vs Brackenfell at 12:20:

Hoërskool Durbanville: 15 Valrhino Olckers, 14 Damian Hendrikse, 13 Lian Jordaan, 12 Shadwill Engelbrecht, 11 Cayden Louw, 10 Shaun Klein, 9 Monray Daars, 8 Jayden Nell, 7 Evert Bouwer, 6 William Goldswain, 5 Liam Baird, 4 Rikus Saaiman, 3 Anru van Rhyn, 2 Devon Strydom, 1 Wian Koen.

Brackenfell: 15 Caden Davids, 14 Randy Kabamba, 13 Cayden Scheffers, 12 Xavier Valentine, 11 Liam Lucas, 10 Sebastiaan Hahn, 9 Mickyle Smith, 8 Raiden Rodney, 7 Luhn van Wyk, 6 Nicholas van Wyk, 5 Ntsika Njomgonkulu, 4 Tiaan Crous, 3 Craigan Matroos, 2 Liyema Sithetho, 1 Johan Groenewald.

Other fixtures: 11:45 – Tygerberg vs Swartland; 11:50 – Hoërskool Bellville vs Stellenberg; 12:00 – HTS Bellville vs DF Malan; 12:10 – Labori t Fairbarn.

  • Light Blues and Volkies square of in do or die clash in SDC Noordvaal Cup’s Bowl-section

Light Blues and Volkies square of in do or die clash in SDC Noordvaal Cup’s Bowl-section

Potchefstroom Volkskool will face a tough ask when they go head-to-head against a revitalized Merensky Side in a do or die clash for both teams in the SDC Noordvaal Cup Bowl-division.

Both teams still have a good chance of qualifying for the playoffs, but a loss could mean the end of the line.

Merensky showed that they are not to be written off in the division after they thumped Dr. Malan in Tzaneen last week. The Light Blues shrugged of the negativity thrown at them after their defeat in Brakpan and proved to their critics that they are indeed a class outfit.

Openside flank, Hardus Terblanche, has been tremendous for Merensky thus far. Terblanche’s work rate has been exceptionally high throughout the season as he continues to wreak havoc at ruck time.

The flanker has also been remarkable in broken play proving to be a danger on attack too. The home side will have to make due without their stalwart, Waldie Haasbroek, who misses out due to injury, but will look to Lukas Pieterse to fill the big boots of Haasbroek in the number eight jersey.

At the back, Byron Hendricks has been pivotal at ten with consistent performances from the tee as well top-notch distribution to the danger men on his outside.

The men from Potchefstroom enjoyed a bye last week and will look to capitalize on the extra rest when they travel up to the Lowveld.

Christo Rose returns to his familiar position at flyhalf. Rose has been instrumental for the Volkies, playing an attacking brand of rugby and will it prove to be an interesting tussle between the two flyhalves.

The Volkies flyhalf has also been remarkable from the tee and with some guidance from Springbok legend, Morne Steyn, in a kicking clinic during the break, he will undoubtedly be a danger with his kicking boot.

Upfront, it’s been the tight five from Volkies who’ve been a thorn in the side of many a team, with none being better than tight head prop, Johan van Tonder. Van Tonder has been solid at scrum time and will once again look to go on the rampage with his burly ball carries.

Wesvalia will welcome Die Anker in Klerksdorp for their long-anticipated clash. Die Anker still wear the mantle of unbeaten thus far after their comfortable win (38-13) against Eldoraigne last week. Although, Wesvalia will be a horse of a different colour as they too came out on top against Pietersburg last week, keeping them on the winning track.

The battle will be upfront between the two packs with both teams playing very physical rugby and with both teams having serious fire power out the back it will come down to who can dominate among the big men up front.

Eldoraigne will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to Dr Malan. The men from Pretoria will look to rub some more salt in the wounds of Dr Malan after their hiding in Tzaneen last week. Inside centre, Rynardt Gelderblom, makes his return to add some more empathise too an already imposing backline.

Dr. Malan is still searching for that first elusive first victory in the competition and will look to capitalize on home ground advantage to come out on top.

Pietersburg travel to Alberton in search of revival after their loss against Wesvalia last weekend. The side from Pietersburg has been very hot and cold thus far and will hope that the right team pitches up to claim an important victory to keep their hunt for a playoff spot alive.

    The teams:

  • Ben Vorster will make it tough for Oos-Moot in Tzaneen

Ben Vorster will make it tough for Oos-Moot in Tzaneen

NewsGBenVorster1Oos-Moot have a different kind of challenge that awaits them in Tzaneen when they face Ben Vorster on Saturday in their SDC Noordvaal Cup Shield-clash in Tzaneen.

The Buffel’s haven’t had the best of seasons thus far but put up a very good display against Secunda two weeks ago falling just short of what would have been a major upset.

The men from Tzaneen looked like a new team in recent times and with a bye last week had some extended rest after a very physical meeting against the hard men from Secunda.

Oos-Moot on the other hand faced two tough challenges in as many weeks having to travel to Lichtenburg and playing against Secunda last weekend which went down to the wire.

Chadwin Storm slots in at his familiar position on inside centre for the home side. Storm has been instrumental in the midfield with his amazing ability to attack the smallest of spaces. He will also be one to watch out for on defence being the backbone in the backline for the Buffel’s.

The danger man lurking at the back Neo Sephuna will look to add some flair on attack to add to his impressive performance on defence two weeks ago.

Upfront, the Buffels will welcome back their ever-present tight head prop, Meyer Vorster. Vorster’s presence will add some fire power to the Vossies scrum, together with his colleague at hooker, Christopher Jansen van Vuuren, the duo will be a hand full on attack as well with their burly ball carries.

Oos-Moot on the other hand suffered two major blows in their encounter against Secunda last week, one being their stalwart and playmaker upfront, Gert Hendrik Grobler, who suffered a shoulder dislocation, but still posses the abilities of Wade Williams on the side of the scrum who will make live very difficult for the Vossie defenders when he gets going with ball in hand. Williams has also been exceptional at the breakdowns and plays a pivotal role on defence.

The men from the Moot will look to flyhalf, Charl van der Sluis, to continue his good run of form and take a leadership role in a side struggling with injuries to guide them to a victory which will secure a home semi-final and a chance to rest some key players in their last fixture.

Secunda comes up against Hugenote (Springs) and will look to keep their unbeaten streak going, a victory against the men from Springs will ultimately secure a home semi final for the table toppers, but they will have to make due without their stalwart lock, Zack Loock, who misses out due to injury, but have a more than capable replacement in Bakkies Bezuidenhout who has been instrumental for the 2nd XV since his return from injury. Bezuidenhout was part of the u16 green Squad last year and seems more than capable to fill the big boots of Loock.

Hugenote have struggled thus far but will want to prove that they are not to be taken lightly, especially in their own back yard. Aiden Mazirel will want to light the fire among his forwards when he slots in at hooker once again. Mazirel has been impressive on defence and won’t shy away from the physicality that Secunda brings to the table.

Ligbron will travel to Kempton Park to face Jeugland. The men from Ermelo have hit their straps in recent times with two big victories under their belt, beating Heidelberg Volkskool (31-19) and Lichtenburg (21-17) with the later being away from home. The two impressive victories have given them a fighting chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Jeugland will look to upset the rhythm of Ligbron. With them being out of the race for the playoffs they will want to end on a high starting with a victory over the men from Ermelo.

Lichtenburg welcome Heidelberg Volkskool in a do or die clash for them. The team from North West have to come out on top against the visitors to keep their hopes alive. Liggies has struggled in the last couple of weeks with loosing twice in as many weeks, both being at home.

For Heidelberg Volkskool this too is some what of a do or die clash with Ligbron coming through strong in the last couple of weeks, putting some pressure on the team from Heidelberg to secure a spot in the top four.

    Grey-kollege t.

  • Middelburg look to overcome Transvalia to secure playoff spot in SDC Noordvaal Cup

Middelburg look to overcome Transvalia to secure playoff spot in SDC Noordvaal Cup

NewsGMiddelburg1Middelburg will look to take advantage of their home ground advantage to overcome a strong Transvalia side to secure a spot in the playoffs of the SDC Noordvaal Cup Plate-division.

Middelburg managed to overcome a spirited Montana side in their victory of 19-17 last week. The side from Mpumalanga were behind at the break but fought back to claim a victory which meant they moved to fourth place.

Middies posses a very strong pack and will look to get the upper hand in the scrum like they’ve done the for most of the season. Wandisa Mthobeni has been a menace at lock with his imposing physicality and presence at ruck time.

The lock has also made a habit of crossing the whitewash for his side and gaining valuable meters with ball in hand. He will be backed up by the big men in the front row Tebogo Nkosi (tight head) and Fumani Chauke (hooker) who’ve been instrumental in the Middies’ scrum as well as impressive on defence.

At the back, Luke Geldenhuys, will be one to look out for as he thrives on attacking the defences with his storming runs, getting over the advantage line more often than not.

Transvalia will undoubtedly bring the physicality upfront with hooker, Junior van Wyngaardt, leading the charge. Van Wyngaardt has been in tremendous form thus far and can be seen throwing his body around and announcing his presence at ruck time and on defence.

It will be an interesting battle between the two backlines with Duan du Toit, taking charge in his familiar position at flyhalf.

Du Toit has been impressive from the kicking tee and possesses good vision on attack, bringing the danger man, Siya Khambula, into play at outside centre. Khambula has continued to impress with his good running lines and immense strength through in the tackle situation on attack, getting his team across the advantage line.

Klerksdorp will cross swords with Zwartkop when the meet in their SDC Noordvaal Cup Plate clash on Saturday.

The home side is still in search of their first victory of the competition after falling short 33-22 against HTS Middelburg last week. Klersdorp will look to the ever-impressive outside centre, Lebo Wageng, and flyer on the outside Papino Maluleke to provide the necessary empathise and flair to overcome Zwarries.

Zwartkop will look to get back to winning ways after their loss against Kempton. The Zwarries impressed against the men from Kempton and it seems that the side from Pretoria has started to gain some momentum towards the latter part of the season. Danilson Metcalfe has been remarkable out wide and will it be intriguing to see the battle between him and his opposite number, Maluleke.
