  • Piketberg triumph in Vredendal and Jantjies stars for Charlie Hofmeyr

Piketberg triumph in Vredendal and Jantjies stars for Charlie Hofmeyr

On a weekend when the fixture list was pruned by the weather in the Western Cape, the matches that did take place provided enough action to keep fans of South African schoolboy rugby content.

Piketberg continued with their impressive run of form after the holiday to come away from their visit to Hoërskool Vredendal with a 34-24 win, to back up their 32-10 triumph over Augsburg Gimnasium last week.

Despite a hattrick by the home team’s lively scrumhalf, Thydrin Lott, and a perfect day with the boot for their vice-captain and flyhalf, Derrick van der Westhuizen, Vredendal could not contain the visitors.

Piketberg’s relentless pressure led to five tries and a penalty try, with Zack Caldo (prop), André Visagie (flanker), Jacques Loubsher (flanker), AJ George (winger) and Erasmus Mouton (hooker) all getting over the line.

Charlie Hofmeyr steamed by Hermanus, beating them 36-13 thanks to the accuracy of their fullback, Lawrence Jantjies, off the kicking tee.

Jantjies converted two of Charlies’ tries and slotted four penalties for a total of 14 points.

Charlie Hofmeyr were without their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, who is on his way to Trinidad and Tobago where he will be competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games as part of the SA U18 Sevens team. That tournament kicks off on Sunday, the 6th of August, when South Africa plays Jamaica in their first game before facing the hosts in the final match of the day.

Langenhoven Gimnasium saw away with Montagu by 38-7. Their flyhalf, Natayniel Fillies, and left-winger, Sinclair Lottering, each scored twice to help their team get the victory away from home.

Paulus Joubert hosted George Watson High from England earlier in the week, narrowly losing out to the visitors by 12-10.

Wynberg Boys’ High versus Paul Roos, Strand versus Parel Vallei, Vredendal Secondary versus Cederberg Academy, Hoërskool Punt versus Bredasdorp and Robertson versus Overberg were some of the fixtures to fall victim to the weather this weekend.

  • Zwartkop make Kempton sweat for their victory, Rusties on top against Transvalia

Zwartkop make Kempton sweat for their victory, Rusties on top against Transvalia

Zwartkop put together a good performance to make Kempton Park sweat for their 24-18 victory over them.

The blindside flank from Kempton, Milano Hattingh, had another impressive performance. Hattingh was especially good with ball in hand and made his presence known through some sheer physicality at the breakdowns.

He was well backed up by his colleagues Luann Schreuder and Adrian Labuschagne who both had solid outings.

At the back it was the speedster on the left wing, Tian Aucamp, who impressed with a remarkable display of running rugby and exceptional footwork as he kept the Zwarries defenders on their toes.

Zwartkop seemed like they finally found some of the rhythm they’ve been striving for as they looked renewed with a very good performance. Danilson Metcalfe was the pick of the Zwarries players crossing the whitewash once again to add yet another try to his already impressive tally in the season thus far.

Waldo Smit also contributed with a good performance from the kicking tee slotting a 54m penalty to keep his team in the hunt throughout most of the game, but it deemed not to be enough as Kempton managed to seal the deal in what can only be described as a very physical match between the two sides.

Rustenburg kept their unbeaten streak alive, beating Transvalia, on home soil in a nail bitter in Rustenburg.

The team from North West were pushed all the way by the men from Vander Bijl in very good contest between two quality sides, but managed to withstand the continuous pressure from Transvalia, claiming a victory of 25-21.

It was a titanic battle upfront with both packs being relentless on defence and at ruck time. At the back it didn’t seem any different as both backlines kept testing the others’ defence, but ultimately it proved to be Rustenburg’s that made the difference with it being the deciding factor at the end as they closed out a hard-fought victory.

HTS Middelburg bagged their first win of the campaign after beating Klerksdorp 33-22. The Rooibulle’s flyhalf, Zander Erasmus, was at the top of his game and managed to run in three tries and convert four of his team’s tries to contribute 23 points of his own to guide his side to a well-deserved victory.

Middelburg got back to winning ways after clinching a nail bitter against Montana in Middelburg. The home side got over the line with two points 19-17 it what might prove to be a very important win when it gets to the playoffs.

    Mighty Maritzburg College march on

Maritzburg College have extended their run of three consecutive wins after beating Pretoria Boys’ High School (43-12), the run includes victories over Affies and Northwood. The comprehensive win was a testament to their skill, teamwork, and unyielding team spirit. Setting up a commanding lead, the midlands school played with precision and intensity, leaving no room for complacency.

From the kickoff, both teams demonstrated their determination to dominate the game. Maritzburg quickly seized control of the ball, displaying their renowned offensive prowess that they have shown throughout the season.

Within ten minutes into the first half, Maritzburg scored two quick tries to apply pressure early on with Langelihle Makhathini seizing his opportunity to weave between the Boys High defenses. South African Schools fullback Luyanda Kunene scored shortly after.

By the halfway stage the hosts were well in front with the score sitting at 31-0, putting the away side in a difficult spot.

During the second half, Boys High demonstrated a much better display, showing some grit and were able to get some much-needed points on the board. The side began to find their rhythm, gaining momentum and pushing their way into the opposition’s half. Inside centre, Rickus Wessels scored the first points of the day for the visitors.

Scrumhalf Joshua Naude scored a second try for Boys High in an attempt to put the visiting side in a position to claw their way back into the match.

However, the home team’s defence held firm, refusing to yield and ensuring the side walked away with another clinical win, mounting resolute tackles and thwarting the Candies attempts to score any further points. The damage done in the first half, proved too great for a comeback.

Both forward packs proved to be formidable forces, Maritzburg dominated the scrums and winning crucial turnovers at the breakdowns. Boys High however were more successful in winning their line outs, achieving a success rate of 62% compared to Maritzburg’s 56%.

Over the two matches played, Maritzburg have amassed a total of 90 points, demonstrating their knack for scoring points. The Candies have struggled to keep up with the intensity and physicality that the midlands side have brought to the table.

Next weekend Maritzburg take on King Edward VII, who lost to Jeppe High School for Boys 41-31. The Johannesburg school has had a good season so far and will put up a good challenge against a rampant College team.

The Candies will be facing their rivals Affies away in their annual derby match. Boys High will be aiming to turn things around when they come up against a competitive Witbulle, who are fresh off a win against Waterkloof.

With the season coming quickly to an end, the sides will all be looking to finish off on a high note.

  • All roads lead to Faure Street as Paarl Gim and Boishaai both win penultimate fixtures

All roads lead to Faure Street as Paarl Gim and Boishaai both win penultimate fixtures

    FOTO: Frans Lombard

Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gimnasium both looked strong in the penultimate games of the season.

Boishaai bounced back after last week’s 26-22 defeat against Boland Landbou to beat Diocesan College 22-12.

Paarl Gimnasium also returned to winning ways after only managing a 10-all draw in George against Outeniqua the previous weekend to put Rondebosch Boys’ High away with 41-7.

Boishaai looked dominant in their encounter against Diocesan College.

Their stalwart hooker, HB Odendaal, ran the show and scored twice before halftime to help his side to a healthy 15-0 lead at the break.

Bryan Burger (centre) was in phenomenal shape and was involved everywhere on the pitch.

Their grade 11 flanker, Rubin Dames, also stood out and was rewarded for his efforts with Boishaai’s only try in the second half, despite their continued dominance.

The SA Schools winger, Jameel de Jongh, scored a brace last year when Boishaai beat Bishops by 29-7. He crossed the try line again today as he continues to add to his incredible tally.

Though Bishops have experienced a strong season leading up to this game, they struggled to maintain possession and Boys’ High had the upper hand throughout most of the match. They came alive in the final 15 minutes when a try by Kashief Joseph, who came on as a replacement in the backline, seemed to provide the spark that they needed.

Their lightning-quick winger, Ayanda Bonoyi, scored another before the end of the match to reduce the deficit to 10 points, but it was too little, too late, and a win against Boishaai continues to evade the Bishops boys for a ninth consecutive year.

After last week’s defeat, this game was vitally important for the hosts to gain some momentum before they take on their biggest rivals in the Paarl derby next Saturday at Faure Street Stadium.

Paarl Gimnasium also flexed their muscles, beating Rondebosch Boys’ High comprehensively by 41-7.

Enzo Labuschagne (fullback) and Kobus Blanckenberg (centre) each crossed the line twice for the Paarl Juggernauts and the big forward pack also looked to be firing on all cylinders as Liam van der Merwe (prop), Xander Mynhardt (prop) and Nicus van Coller (eighth man) also got their names written on the score cards.

In the absence of their SA Schools flyhalf, Kyle Smith, their fullback, Tazreeq Moerat, who has been central to their success this year, stepped up to take over the kicking duties for his team.

The stage is perfectly set for the biggest inter-schools game in the world to produce another South African schoolboy rugby classic next weekend when Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High meet again.

Boland Landbou continued with their impressive end-of-season form, defeating SACS by 32-22 to back up their big victory against Boishaai last weekend.

Retagen van Rooi, their influential flyhalf, starred again. Van Rooi scored a try, three conversions and two penalties to contribute 17 of his team’s points.

To their credit, SACS put up a fight. Their trusted flyhalf, Rayaan Solomons, played well, and he and his team made the visitors sweat for a bit at the end of the game.

That said, Boland Landbou has become a strong, mature side over the season and they were able to secure the victory.

They host Paul Roos next Saturday for what promises to be another extremely exciting matchup in the Paarl that weekend.

  • Secunda come out on top in the Moot, Ligbron continues winning streak in Lichtenburg

Secunda come out on top in the Moot, Ligbron continues winning streak in Lichtenburg

Secunda managed to come out on top against table toppers Oos-Moot  by 45-41 in the SDC Noordvaal Cup Shield-division on Saturday.

It was a game of two halves, with Secunda playing with the wind in the first 35 minutes, they managed to build up a lead of 21 points by half time.

The platform was laid by the speedsters at the back, capitalizing on the hard work done by the big men upfront. Secunda’s left wing, Luan Lottering, impressed once again from the tee with another 100% success rate as well as contributing two tries to his teams’ tally.

Among the big men it was Secunda’s ever-present hooker, Henrico Fourie, who lit the fire for the team from Mpumalanga. He announced his presence with a remarkable display with the ball in hand as well on defence.

Oos-Moot fought back very well after the break and quickly shut down the lead of Secunda with them using the stiff breeze to their advantage in the second half. Charl van der Sluis was once again very good with his kicking game, taking full advantage of the wind behind his back to pin the opposition down in their own half.

Van der Sluis’ accurate kicking allowed the home side to capitalize on continued pressure as they started pilling on the points, but it deemed not to be enough as they lost by 45-41 at home.

Ligbron has become the dark-horse in the Shield division after beating Lichtenburg 21-17 at home on Saturday. The men from Ermelo lead from the get-go as they dominated the physical battle upfront to set the stage for the speedsters at the back to play their expansive running game which continuously caused problems for the Lichtenburg defence.

Lichtenburg struggled to find any sort of continuity as the Ermelo based side kept disrupting their ball at ruck time and capitalized on the unforced errors from the hosts to claim an important win to keep their hopes for a Semi-final spot alive.

    Puntemakers:

Outeniqua 10 (0) – Drie: JJ Daters. Doelskop: JT Strydom. Strafdoel: Elgeron Meyer. Stellenberg 8 (5) – Drie: Alex Schoeman. Strafdoel: Ruben Thompson.
