  • Grey High School hosts St Andrew’s College for an epic showdown

Grey High School hosts St Andrew’s College for an epic showdown

St Andrew’s College last game against Graeme College was as close as it gets.

At 24-23, one point was all St Andrew’s needed to take the victory. At half time, the game was in St Andrew’s favour at 12-6.

This lead was provided by Jacques Cloete and Joe Bennie each scoring a try for their side.

After half-time, things took a turn, with Graeme sending a message in the beginning of the second half; scoring a try for their side. Both teams fought for a good portion of the game, not allowing any more points on the board, until eventually Graeme scored again.

Jason Dovey, of St Andrew’s, would not allow them to widen the gap, and scored another try, bringing the game to 17-18, Graeme leading by one point. After a great defensive effort from St Andy’s, Hlombe Kepe, of Graeme, broke through and scored an excellent try.

The game was nearly over, the score was 17-23 to Graeme. St Andrew’s would not let the game end like this, though. In the last moments, Daniel Hickey made a quick pass to Sintu Mjali who managed to earn them another try in the nick of time.

Time had run out and St Andrews were still down one point. The only path to victory was through a successful conversion by Hickey. Hickey made the kick and St Andrew’s took the game at 24-23. This demonstrates just how they will persevere and play until the very end.

Grey High School have been performing well this season, managing to hold a three-game winning streak in April. Grey also started the year off strong, beating Stellenberg 22-20 in their first game of 2023.

When Grey defeated Westville recently, 17-15, they took control early on and scored the first try, by way of Kaiden Titus.

After this, it was a slow progression to the end of the game. With five minutes left in the game, Westville was five points ahead. Grey fought at the line and the incredible happened, in the very last moments Grey scored a penalty try and ended the game at 17-15. A victory for Grey and an extremely tense gameplay.

The parallels between Grey’s and St Andrew’s performance makes their game an exciting one.

Both schools have managed to turn things around for the win in the very last moments. If this is the rugby brought to the field on Saturday, it is going to be an intense game with a battle for every point.

This is not the only action happening this weekend, there are many other top Eastern Cape schools that will be facing off. There is no shortage of great rugby this Saturday.

Other Fixtures in the Eastern Cape:

12:15 – Selborne College vs Port Rex THS;  13:00 – Despatch vs HTS Daniël Pienaar; 13:20 – Hudson Park vs Hangklip; 14:30 – Nico Malan vs Marlow Landbou; 14:30 – Pearson vs Kingswood College; 15:00 – Grey High School vs St Andrew’s College; 15:30 – Dale College vs Queen’s College.

  • Michaelhouse faces some tough opposition in DHS this weekend

Michaelhouse faces some tough opposition in DHS this weekend

Michaelhouse defeated Kearsney College 23-20 last weekend, boosting their total victories to six.

There are some names which keep being mentioned when Michaelhouse takes the field, certain players which seem to score at least once every game.

Leo Muziva should sound familiar to anyone following Michaelhouse this season. Muziva and Luthando Buthulezi each scored a try to Michaelhouse in this contentious match up, both of which were converted by Luke Davidson.

Davidson has a great kicking record so far and has proven that he can deliver under pressure. Michaelhouse’s 2023 squad is really strong overall and runs like a well-oiled machine, the practice they put into working as a team does not go unnoticed.

Durban High School has been a formidable contender this season and absolutely dominated the game in many of their encounters. When Durban faced HTS Drostdy, they took a massive 64-17 win.

When Durban and Hilton played this past weekend, it was a close game to say the least. A one-point difference decided the champion. With less than a minute left in the game, it was a battle on Durban’s try line.

Their defence pushed with everything they had, but Hilton pushed back.

It seemed Durban had it in the bag, and in the last moment Hilton broke through and took the win.

This is not a regular outcome for Durban this season, they have a whopping ten wins so far. Durban is going to bring some quick paced and hard hitting rugby when they take on Michaelhouse, and the latter will have to be on top perform if they want to succeed.

Hilton has three back-to-back wins and will be looking to earn their fourth as they take on Pretoria Boys’ High School this weekend. The team from Pretoria will be making the long trip to Hilton’s home turf and would not want to leave without a victory.

Pretoria Boys’ High, like Hilton, is also on a three-game winning streak. Talk about an interesting set up. Pretoria has had some unbelievable wins this year, beating St Stithians 66-0 in March. They have also racked up a total of eight wins.

Hilton has seven wins so far, meaning this game could bring them to a draw. The Hiltonians are going to bring some top-level rugby to the field, just as they have done so far. They have shown just how well they can perform as a team, physically and mentally coming together to execute some brilliant plays.

There is already some history between the schools, as last year Hilton managed to beat Pretoria 21-7, adding even more pressure to the situation.

Glenwood started their season strong with a 72-0 victory over Voortrekker of Pietermaritzburg, beating Westville and Nelspruit shortly after. They have shown that they can deliver some great rugby, including their incredibly close game against Waterkloof at the Noord/Suid-tournament.

Glenwood will be facing Kearsney College this weekend, and after Kearsney’s neck and neck game with Michaelhouse this past weekend, they will be looking for a win.

After Clifton’s 47-7 defeat of St Andrews from Bloemfontein, they have proven how they can take control of the game and earn a massive win when everything comes together. Clifton and St Albans are set to battle this weekend after both having tough games last Saturday.

With Northwood and St Charles both entering their game as champions from the previous weekend’s line up, the stakes are high. Northwood has five victories to St Charles’ two, however, the game could swing in either direction.

    Fixtures:

13:10 – Hilton College vs Pretoria Boys’ High; 13:45 – Clifton vs St Alban’s College; 14:30 – St Charles College vs Northwood; 14:45 – Michaelhouse vs Durban High School; 15:30 – Kearsney College vs Glenwood.

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard

Hoërskool Garsfontein bagged the narrowest of victories in their opening match of this year’s Jubilee League against Hoërskool Waterkloof. Garsies coming out on top by 30-29 on their home turf.

What made the victory even more impressive is that Waterkloof had their two star players Shiane Fouché and Luané Smith back who missed this year’s Absa Wildeklawer tournament due to their participation for South Africa’s Fast 5-team at the Junior Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

After the first quarter the scoreboard was locked at 7-all. Garsies managed to build up a lead at half-time with the scoreline reading 15-12 in their favour. Klofies managed to close the gap to a single goal at the end of the third quarter (23-22).

For Garsfontein their centre, Mariné Lourens, was superb. She will be representing one of the Gauteng teams later this year at the All Ages tournament. Kristen Boshoff (attacking wing) and Chanique Eyberg (goal defence) also played exceptionally well.

So far three fixtures has been completed in the Jubilee League.

Eldoraigne and Oos-Moot went head-head with the former walking away as victors with a score of 32-17.

Menlopark won against Montana by 32-25.

The match between Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool and Montana was supposed to take place on the 5th of May, but it has been postponed until the 22nd of May 22.

Collegiate celebrates win during Founders Weekend

Old Girls Squad: Liezel Botha, Kayleigh Hill, Rebecca King, Rachel King, Melissa Weiss, Ofentse Senatle, Kay-Lee Marx, Ogi Oliphant and Joseline Maas

Collegiate celebrated their 149th birthday celebration by hosting their Founders Weekend filled with various sport codes this past weekend.

On Friday, 5 May the u14, u16 and u19 teams faced Diocesan School for Girls. The last time Collegiate’s first team faced Diocesan, the game ended in a draw.

DSG started the game with a fierce attack strategy but Collegiate returned the energy by not holding back on their defense. It was an intense first quarter with both teams shooting the necessary goals to stay in the game.

DSG proved to be a difficult competitor making use of swift ball passes which made Collegiate increase their defense leading to a 4-all equalizer. It was a highly skilled quarter round where one mistake ultimately led to the opponent getting the advantage. DSG ended this quarter on a 7-6 lead.

Collegiate returned to the second quarter with a point to prove by equalizing the 7-7 score. DSG made it extremely hard for Collegiate to gain the lead but once they got it, the girls had enough stamina to maintain their lead. Collegiate kept the goals coming but DSG wasn’t willing to stay behind and placed more pressure on their attack players in their goal circle.

However, with every goal missed by DSG, Collegiate would use this as an opportunity to advance their lead. The game got more intense in the last half with both teams fighting for the win. DSG’s mishandling of the ball gave Collegiate the advantage and they made sure they used every opportunity to secure their 29-19 victory against DSG.

The following day, Collegiate’s first team went up against the Old Girls team. This is a team with former Collegiate players with mixed ages. The first team were impressive from the first minute of the game, taking the early lead of 5-2 against the Old Girls team at the end of the first quarter. The girls exercised speed and a strong defense strategy against their opponents, preventing them from equalizing the score.

The first team defeated the Old Girls Team 27-10.

Despatch faced Otto du Plessis on Saturday, 6 May 2023.

The Despatch first team entered the game with a heavy attack drive securing 19 goals to four in the first quarter. Otto du Plessis could not go around Despatch’s defense and failed to gain enough goals in the first half. The second quarter ended with Despatch in the 31-8 lead against Otto du Plessis. Once Despatch saw they had control of the game, they ensured they tightened their defense increasing pressure on their attack players.

Their strategy worked well because Otto du Plessis only managed to score four goals in the last half. Despatch’s first team walked away with a swift 49-12 victory against Otto du Plessis.

The rest of Despatch’s teams won all their games. The u16A team did extremely well by taking the 44-9 victory whilst the u16C didn’t give Otto du Plessis a chance to advance in their 23-1 loss.

  • Dale looking to overturn season misfortunes on Reunion weekend

Dale looking to overturn season misfortunes on Reunion weekend

“For the boys, this is one game they want to win.” Those were the words echoed by Dale College’s assistant coach Andrew Senekal ahead of the side’s reunion clash against Queen’s College this coming Saturday.

Dale, from King Williams Town, will host the Komani side in what will be their 162nd reunion, a milestone added to the school’s rich history.

However, the side has had a rather unpleasant start to their season on the turf. After losing nine players from last year’s team, the King Willy boys find themselves winless.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools ahead of the reunion clash, Senekal, reflected on the season so far and added how they were planning to use the momentous occasion to spark confidence in the boys.

“It’s been a tough season,” he said in a light tone.

“We participated in the Founders Festival, where we struggled and came up against some of the top schools in the country.”

“It’s been challenging also because we haven’t had our astroturf; we’ve been training on the mini-astro because we’ve been resurfacing our main astro, which is now complete, so hopefully, we’ll get into the swing of things now and get the players in the gear they need to take their game forward.”

Losing consecutive matches tends to tamper with a team’s morale and confidence.

This has been the case for Dale, as Senekal reveals how they, as the management, are trying to get the boys into the correct head space.

“There are various challenges that we’ve had, and coming from the festival where we didn’t get any wins, it’s tough.”

“A lot of the mental aspect is low at the moment; we are trying to get the boys in the correct mental head space and get them to work together again.”

Despite losing to the likes of Kearsney College, Northwood, and Cambridge High so far this season, Dale will approach Queens knowing that reunion fever can spark on their side and that the unexpected could happen. Senekal echoed these sentiments, stating the importance of the match and how eager the boys are for it.

“The reunion matters; many people and even old boys come from all over the country to come and enjoy the festivities,” he said.

“For the boys, this is the game they want to win; you can ignore everything else because this is one game that they chase and want to win; it’s a win-at-all-costs game.”

“For the matrics, it’s probably their last game against Queens, so they just want to push and do as well as they can.”

Kick-off between the two sides is at 16:15 on Friday.

Other matches to watch out for in the Eastern Cape include the clash between Makhanda’s Kingswood College and Pearson High from Gqeberha.

St. Andrews College will also make their way to Bloemfontein to face Grey College, while Hudson Park will battle it out with Merrifield College, and Westering will play Victoria Park.

    The teams:

Dale College: Inga Mafanga, Gavin Walton, Sbongisile Nzima, Kamva Tolwana, Hlumelo Ntlola, Joe Mendoza, Siyabonga Madlwabinga, Akanani Msutu, Lihumelo Ncukana, Caleb Ellis, Amangile Songelwa, Endinako Mnguni, Hlomla Kostauli, Naledi Mosebi

  • High-intensity key as DHS looks to down Michaelhouse.

High-intensity key as DHS looks to down Michaelhouse.

    PHOTO: Justin Waldman Photography

Durban High School head coach Michael Baker says his team needs to play with high intensity if they stand any chance of beating provincial rivals, Michaelhouse, when the two Kwa-Zulu Natal sides lock horns this coming weekend at the Punchbowl.

Located just 125 kilometers north-west of Durban, DHS will, for the second week running, make the trip down after traveling to face Hilton last weekend and losing that highly entertaining match (4-3).

Speaking to SuperSport Schools during the week, Baker said his side needed to raise their intensity and remain resolute on defence, something they lacked in their previous match.

“We weren’t good in deep defence against Hilton, so we conceded soft goals because our defensive system wasn’t great at all,” Baker said.

“We’ve got to get better there because Michaelhouse has some really good goal scorers—that’s the key focus.”

“We also need to raise our intensity because we started the match really slow, so those are the things we need to work on,” he added.

The Durban school is known for its rugby accolades and outstanding performances over the years, which at the time overshadowed a mediocre, underperforming hockey programme.

However, that all changed in 2018, when the school acquired the services of Baker as director of hockey and eventually head coach. Baker managed to grow the school’s hockey programme from four teams to 12.

He shared how he and members of his hockey staff resurrected the program, bringing respectability and honour back to the DHS name.

“The school was supportive from the get-go; our director of sports, Mr. Pillay, and our headmaster, Mr. Pinheiro, have supported me with the vision I had,” Baker revealed.

“We’ve been able to hire some good coaches that share the same vision as me.”

“I think the most important thing is making the hockey boys feel part of something.” “We are building a good culture in the hockey program at the moment, and this year has been a game changer, with the school building an Astro at the school, so it’s been huge being able to train on campus and play on campus.”

Early in the season, DHS is showing good strides, having picked up historic wins against Northwood (1-0), Westville (2-0), and Maritzburg College (2-1) for the first time since 2009.

The coach believes these results will go a long way this season as they continue to climb up the rankings.

“There are a lot of teams we haven’t beaten in a long time that we have beaten this year.”

“When I first got here in 2018, teams like Westville and Northwood gave us double figures, so to beat them this year was quite a huge moment for the hockey side.”

The clash between the two sides will kick off at 14:00.

Other action to look out for in KZN includes a matchup between Hilton College and Pretoria Boys High.
