  • Roundup of the Fasken St David’s Festival

NewsGPhekoOdirileThe Fasken St David’s Time Cricket Festival took place over four days last week and the participating schools rose to the occasion.

There were a number of high team scores, some big hitting from the batsmen, quite a few big wicket hauls from the spinners and plenty of evidence of smart cricket from the captains.

One would have to say that the batsmen had the upper hand, over the four days, which was to be expected on the early-season low and slow wickets. The outfields were dry and fast at the end of the winter, which made fielding difficult at times.

There were 10 centuries scored and of those four were 150 plus efforts. The top score of the week was by Roche Rautenbach of Noordheuwel who made 192 against St Alban’s. Not far behind him on 188 was Connor Esterhuizen of St John;s who got 188 against Maritzburg College.

The other big centuries were by Jacques Van der Walt of Maritzburg College (150 not out vs St Stithians) and Cameron Rowe of St Stithians (174 vs Maritzburg College).

The other centurions were: Liam Mosters (112 not out for St Stithians vs Marizburg College); Jody de Sousa (121 for St Stithians vs Maritzburg College); Heinrigh Pieterse (127 for KES vs CSA TAP); Ronan Herrman (104 for Noordheuwel vs St David’s); Pheko Moletsane (111 for St Andrew’s vs KES) and JP King (131 for St John’s vs Maritzburg College).

To confirm that the conditions favoured the batsmen, a further 40 half centuries were notched up over the four days.

There were, however, five five-wicket hauls, with three of them coming from spin-bowlers. The best figures were returned by left arm spinner Odirile Modimokoane of the CSA TAP XI who took 8/36 against KES on the second day. Franco Bekker took 6/20 for Noordheuwel vs St Alban’s; Matthew Lieberman took 5/20 for St Stithians vs Paul Roos and the Jeppe spin pair of Cian Roberston and Cael Murray took 6/56 and 5/24, respectively, against the CSA TAP XI.

There were just three wins in the 12 matches played, but most of the games were played in a positive spirit, with the captains setting reachable targets in most instances.

Two of the victories – St Stithians win over Paul Roos Gimnasium and Nooorheuwel’s win over St Alban’s – were on the back of outstanding individual performances. Rautenbach got his 192 in that game and Bekker took six wickets to dismiss St Alban’s for just 37 in their second innings.

Cameron Rowe made 174 for St Stithians to set them up for their innings and 53 runs win over Paul Roos.
The other victory came with the most exciting finish of the week. KES beat the CSA TAP team by one wicket. Their captain, Mickey Copeland got the winning runs in the gathering gloom at the end of the second day when it looked like the CSA side were going to hold out for a draw.

Odirile Modimokaung of the CSA TAP team took 19 wickets over the four days and was named the best bowler at the festival; the best batsman prize went Connor Esterhuizen of St John’s. He scored 260 runs in three innings, including a 188 against Maritzburg College on Saturday.

Pheko Moletsane of St Andrew’s was named the player of the tournament. He made 268 runs including 111 and 91 against KES on Sunday, and he took four wickets.

  • SA Rugby hosts U16 and U17 Elite Player Development camps

NewsGRensoduPlessisMore than 120 of the top Under-16 and Under-17 players in the country will assemble in the Western Cape for two week-long Elite Player Development (EPD) camps, from Sunday 22 September to Saturday 28 September, in line with SA Rugby’s development pathway to groom them for the future.

Sixty players will participate in the U16 camp at Paarl Gymnasium, and 64 players will converge on Hugenote High School in Wellington for the U17 camp.

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux, SA Schools coach Mzwakhe Nkosi and his SA Schools A counterpart Phiwe Nomlomothe, will also attend the camps, while selected schools coaches, strength and conditioning coaches and medical staff have also been invited.

The main objectives of the camps are to assess the players’ physical and technical abilities, and to expose the participating coaches to SA Rugby’s EPD structures with the vision of ensuring collaboration with them.

“The EPD camps form a vital cog in our player development and strategic transformation structures, as these young players are the future of the game,” said Rassie Erasmus, Director of Rugby.

“These camps offer us the opportunity to expose the players to our structures and work with them from a young age, and to guide them in terms of what takes to achieve national honours in future.

“It is the culmination of a lot of hard work behind the scenes as our talent identification process starts at the age of the 15 years old, and we track the players throughout their school careers and until Under-20 level.

“It is also beneficial for us to have some of the school coaches and support staff at such initiatives as it also allows us to expose to our structures, which is important as we need to work together to pave the way for the players to advance through the ranks. Over and above that it creates a platform for the identification and development of our SA Schools coaches and management.”

Erasmus added: “Several players who were invited to these camps in the past went on to represent the SA Schools team in the U18 International Series, the Junior Springboks in the World Rugby U20 Championship, the Springboks and the Springbok Sevens team, including the likes of Handré Pollard, Damian Willemse and Zain Davids, which is a testament to the success of this programme.”

Holtzhausen was die afgelope paar jaar by Oakdale Landbou net buite Riversdal as sportwetekenskaplike betrokke.

Sy was voorheen by Menlopark se netbal betrokke.

  • Rautenbach smashed St Alban’s bowling attack apart

NewsGOdirileModikowane1The first day of the Fasken St David’s Time Cricket Festival was a bit of a run-fest, with the batsmen taking advantage of the flat wickets and the fast, dry outfields.

Three of the six-to-day games saw the sides batting first declaring on scores greater than 300, and in two other the declarations came at 230 plus.

Only one side – the CSA TAP XI – was bowled out in their first innings and even they did well to get to 195 after they were struggling at 96/7 at one stage.

In the process, there were four centuries scored on the day and no fewer than 12 half-centuries.

The top score of the day was 192 by Roche Rautenbach of Noordheuwel against St Alban’s College. He faced 163 balls and smashed 23 fours and six sixes in a swashbuckling knock that saw him offer several chances. He helped his side to 331/8 declared, the biggest total of the day

Liam Mostert of St Stithians contributed 124 not out to his side’s total of 308/4 declared. He faced 170 balls and struck 13 fours and one six.

Jack Lees of St John’s was 102 not out as his side amassed 325/6 declared against St Andrew’s.

The only century of the afternoon session came from Heinrigh Pietersen of King Edward VII. He saw his side safely into the lead against the CSA TAP side, making 127. He faced 111 balls and hit 17 fours and four sixes.

The pick of the bowling was the 5/50 from Mickey Copeland for KES vs The TAP team, while Marco Botham took 4/35 against St Alban’s and TAP XI’s Odirile Modimokoane took 4/72 against KES.

With a full day’s play still to go, a number of teams appear to be in the driving seat and will be going for the win tomorrow. Noordheuwel bowled St Alban’s out for 148, 183 runs behind and has the option of putting them in again tomorrow morning.

Paul Roos Gimnasium led St David’s by 144 runs and did ask them to bat again. The home side were on 8/0 at the close of play.

King Edward led the CSA TAP side by 87 runs with two wickets still standing and an early declaration is likely from them tomorrow.
