  • Top class schools’ cricket expected at this year’s Michaelmas Week

NewsGMichaelmasThe 60th annual Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week takes place in the KZN capital and surrounding areas from Saturday, September 21 to Tuesday, September 24 and promises to deliver a host of exciting matches as well as giving spectators a chance to watch the country’s future stars.

All the matches at Goldstone’s and Barns at Maritzburg College will be live-streamed by DigiTV.co.za.

It is also a unique cricket event in that all 10 of the KZN province’s leading schoolboy first XIs are represented in one festival.

The annual hosts Maritzburg College are joined by fellow KZN schools St Charles College, Hilton College, Michaelhouse, Kearsney College, Westville, Glenwood, Durban High School (DHS), Clifton College and Northwood.

The KZN “Top 10” will pit their talents and teamwork against 12 of the very best in the country.

The school first XIs from outside KZN taking part are St Stithians College, Pretoria Boys’ High School (PBHS), Grey College, King Edward VII School (KES), St John’s College, Jeppe High School for Boys’, St David’s Marist, St Alban’s College, St Andrews College (Grahamstown), Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Hudson Park (East London) and, terms of the decades that the likes of KES have been at Michaelmas, a relatively new and invaluable addition in the form of the Cricket South Africa Talent Acceleration Programme XI (colloquially know as CSA TAP) a side that has taken the honours against the long-standing Michaelmas teams on numerous occasions.

A measure of the quality of cricketers that have passed through this festival are the household names who have graced the biggest stages in the world.

Ali Bacher and Graeme Smith (KES), Kepler Wessels and Hansie Cronje (Grey College), AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis (Affies), and Hashim Amla (DHS) are some of the Michaelmas cricketers over the past 60 years whose post-school careers have led them to become SA national team captains.

And just some of the Michaelmas cricketers who have gone on to reach the pinnacle of the game and delight audiences around the world include Barry Richards (DHS), David Miller, Kevin Pietersen and Jonty Rhodes (all Maritzburg College) and Quinton de Kock (KES).

Schoolboy cricket lovers are in for a treat.

The 50-over matches start at 9 am.

On the last day schools have the option of playing either the T20 or 50-over format.

  • The Exodus of South Africa’s rugby talent at junior level has begun

LeavingOnAJetplaneThe mass Exodus of promising junior rugby players out of South African rugby has begun.

No less than 18 school players of 2019 will play their rugby abroad in 2020. This will only cause the number of Saffas playing rugby abroad and representing other countries to accumulate in the near future. More than 300 South African’s is already earning a living plying their trade overseas.

The new contracting system introduced by SA Rugby that is supposed to keep more rugby players in the country seems to be having an opposite impact on tomorrow’s talent.

The fact that there will only be a week-long u19 tournament from this year going forward as well the fact that the only junior interprovincial tournament after school will be u21 and not u20 without a doubt will also have had an impact on the decision of the players to leave the country.

The highest profile player Kade Wolhuter‘s case has been extensively reported on.

The Paul Roos Gimnasium’s flyhalf was without a doubt the best player in action during the Craven Week in Bloemfontein. Wolhuter was however overlooked for SA Schools’ selection, because of his indication that he will further his career at Montpellier in France.

The Strategic Transformation Plan without a doubt also had an impact on the amount of players that are seeking opportunities ashore. Just more than 30 players was afforded junior contracts by South African unions for 2020. This is a lot less than the approximately 105 players whom received junior contracts at the end of 2018.

Wolhuter will be joined by Marcell Muller (wing, Grey College), Robbie Rodgers (prop, Paul Roos), Lesley Botha (centre, Grey College) and Sergio Moreira (eighthman, Noordheuwel) at Montpellier near the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea. Rodgers is the son of former Bok prop Heinrich Rodgers

Wolhuter and FC Du Plessis (Toulon) was overlooked for SA Schools’ selection, but a couple of players slipped through SA Rugby’s policing and represented the national schools’ side during the Aon International Series. Du Plessis was one of the standout schoolboy flyhalves in South Africa this year. He helped Grey College to finish at the top of School of Rugby‘s as well as all the other schoolboy rankers.

SA Schools’ fullback, Zeilinga Strydom, started all three matches during the international series, but will also be calling for the ball in French next year as he will be joining Stade Français in Paris. Affies’ tighthead prop, Werner Kruger, will also join Stade Français, while the Wit Bulle’s captain and hooker, Jacques-Lois du Toit, is also in advanced discussions with the French club.

Another two SA Schools’ players Jan-Hendrik Wessels (prop, Grey College) and George Cronjé (eighthman, Grey College), hasn’t put pen to paper yet, but both received lucrative offers from clubs in France and might be lost to South African rugby. Their agent BC du Plessis confirmed that they have a couple of offers from overseas as well as local, but they haven’t made an final decision about their future yet.

Grey College’s lock Danwich Beukes will also join Toulon to further his career. Beukes is the son of former Free State lock Joe Beukes. The latter represented the Cheetahs in 125 matches in his career.

Two of the second ranked school in South Africa, Paarl Gimnasium’s, players Pierich Siebert (flanker) and Stephan du Toit (centre) will be leaving South Africa to further their careers in Japan. Siebert will join Rissho University in Tokio. This university is one of the oldest in the world being found in 1580.

Alex Groves, lock of St John’s College, who represented the Golden Lions XV at the Craven Week will leave the South African shores to join Bristol in England. St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown’s hooker, Chris Poole, will also further his career in the United Kingdom as he will be joining Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Both of these players already have British Passports which made their move easier.

Voortrekker of Bethlehem’s lock Steyl Barnard will be joinging Beziers in France, Jaryd Scheepers (lock, Garsfontein) will attend university in Australia.

If you know of any school players that will be leaving our shores or you are a player further your career overseas and we have omitted your name from the list please send us an e-mail to hannes@rugby.supersportschools.com or drop us a WhatsApp at 067 944 3358.

  • Only 15 SA Schools’ Players managed to secure junior contracts in South Africa

ContractSigningThe new contracting model implemented by SA Rugby as expected had a major impact on the amount of school players who received junior contracts from the unions.

Only 15 of the 26 players who represented the South African Schools’ side earlier this year have been able to put pen to paper and further their careers with one of the South African unions.

Excluding the national Sevens Academy it seems that only 29 schools leavers managed to secure junior contracts within South Africa for 2020. A further three players Ian Small-Smith (Grey College), Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gimnasium) and Christiaan Smit (Ben Vorster) has confirmed that they will join the Sevens Academy in Stellenbosch.

The list of contracted players might increase as we could only confirm two players, Bobby Alexander (Paarl Gimnasium) and Dylan de Leeuw (Paul Roos Gimnasium), that have signed contracts with Western Province. Rumour has it that another two players might join the union in 2020.

Another two SA Schools’ players of 2019, Keke Morabe (Welkom Gimnasium) and Connor Evans (Diocesan College), will only finish matric in 2020. Morabe had a couple of offers on the table, but made it clear that he will prioritise finishing his matric.

In the preceding years approximately 110 juniors received contracts from the Big Five unions (Blue Bulls, Western Province, Sharks, Golden Lions and Free State). The Bulls who traditionally was the biggest spenders on luring school player to join the union after school only signed four junior contracts for 2020.

Two of the four players Stravino Jacobs (Paarl Gimnasium) and Ethan Theart (Windhoek Gimnasium) was not in action during this year’s Youth Weeks due to the fact that they were already u19. Two locks Raynard Roets (Garsfontein) and Tiaan de Klerk (Monument) are the two other players that managed to secure contracts with the Blue Bulls.

The Golden Lions signed the most junior contracts with six SA Schools’ players Henco van Wyk (Monument), Jurich Claassens (Garsfontein), Sbu Shongwe (Jeppe), Tyler Bocks (Paarl Boys’ High), Boldwin Hansen (Hermanus) and Quan Horn (Paarl Boys’ High) all furthering their rugby careers in Johannesburg next year.

The Sharks also had a good harvest as they signed SA Schools’ hooker and captain, Jacques Goosen, Jarrod Taylor,  Mntungwa Mapantsela (all Selborne College), Blaine Golden (Glenwood) and Kian Meadon (Paarl Boys’ High) to join them next year.

The Free State’s scout, Melusi Mthethwa, only had a budget of R400K to lure exciting talent to move to Bloemfontein. Luckily Mthethwa is a very persuasive man who’s track record speaks for itself and the Free State has a very impressive record of turning prospective talent into world class stars.

The Free State managed to lure SA Schools’ and Paarl Boys’ High’s eighthman, Gideon van Wyk, to further his career in the City of Roses. Mthethwa also managed to convinced three promising props Nolan Pienaar (Menlopark), Kamshen Moss and Warren Louw (both Voortrekker, Bethlehem) to join the Cheetahs.

It seems the Kings had a bigger budget than usual or the smaller market made it possible for them to sign more juniors than usual. The SA Schools’ winger/fullback of Stellenberg, Tharquinn Manuel, will move to the Friendly City. Other promising backs from around the country Nsuku Baloyi (Menlopark), Tiaan Swanepoel (Paarl Gimnasium) and Tiaan Botes (Helpmekaar) will all move to Port Elizabeth to further their careers.

    The Contracted Juniors are:

Blue Bulls (4): Raynard Roets (Garsfontein), Tiaan de Klerk (Monument), Stravino Jacobs (Paarl Gimnasium), Ethan Theart (Windhoek Gimnasium).

Free State (7): Gideon van Wyk (Paarl Boys’ High), Nolan Pienaar (Menlopark), Kamshen Moss (Voortrekker), Warren Louw (Voortrekker), MJ Janse van Rensburg (Affies), Zander du Toit (Helpmekaar), Tylon Kotze (EG Jansen).

Golden Lions (11): Henco van Wyk (Monument), Jurich Claassens (Garsfontein), Sbu Shongwe (Jeppe High School for Boys’), Allister Williams (Paarl Boys’ High), Tyler Bocks (Paarl Boys’ High), Quan Horn (Paarl Boys’ High), Boldwin Hansen (Hermanus), Izan Esterhuizen (Monument), Munashe Chaitezwi (St Stithians College), Siyemukela Ndlovu (Northwood), Ngia Selengbe (King Edward VII).

EP Kings (4): Tharquin Manuel (Stellenberg), Nsuku Baloyi (Menlopark), Tiaan Swanepoel (Paarl Gimnasium), Tiaan Botes (Helpmekaar).

Sharks (6): Kian Meadon (Paarl Boys’ High), Jacques Goosen (Selborne College), Ockie Barnard (Westville Boys’ High), Jarrod Taylor (Selborne College), Blaine Golden (Glenwood), Mntungwa Mapantsela (Selborne College).

Western Province (2): Dylan Alexander (Paarl Gimnasium), Dylan de Leeuw (Paul Roos Gimnasium).

Sevens Academy (3): Ian Small-Smith (Grey College), Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gimnasium), Christiaan Smit (Ben Vorster).

Groep A: Garsfontein, Hoërskool Middelburg, Ellisras, CR Swart.

Groep B: Monument, Waterkloof, Kempton Park, Ben Vorster.

Groep C: EG Jansen, Noordheuwel, Montana, Lichtenburg.

Groep D: Hoërskool Nelspruit, Heidelberg Volkskool, Hoërskool Rustenburg, Menlopark.

Sylvester Booysen sal hom in Oktober by HTS Drostdy as Direkteur van Rugby aansluit.

White het hom reeds as rugbykonsultant van 1 September af by HTS Drostdy aangesluit.

Booysen was voorheen ook as afrigter by die Hoërskool Menlopark betrokke.

  • Runs a plenty in Northerns as batsmen fill their boots.

Runs a plenty in Northerns as batsmen fill their boots.

NEwsGRichardtAckermanThe fourth week of the Northerns Frist Platinum A Section took place this past weekend. The day was perfect for a game of cricket. Clear blue skies greeted the teams on Saturday morning with springtime in full display.

There were several high-scoring matches which ended up with schools on the winning side winning by large margins.

Hoërskool Waterkloof hosted Cornwall Hill College, who were playing in their first fixture of the season.

Waterkloof batted first and set the tone for the match by amassing an intimidating first innings total of 338/10 from their 50 overs.

Four of the top six batsmen all made starts with three of them going on to score half-centuries.

Opener SW Kemp and middle order batsmen Simeon de Bruyn both scored 59 runs. Waterkloof’s Zander Maree came in with the score sitting at 158/4 with the platform set he moved into over-drive batting at a strike rate of 237 and was in a destructive mode putting the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

Maree ended on 90 from 38 balls narrowly missing out on a well-deserved century. Jordan Neil was the pick of the bowlers picking up figures of 3/40 in 9.4 overs. Prince Trotter picked up 4/72 in 10 overs but was slightly expensive going at 7.2 runs an over, however, he picked up the important wicket of Maree.

In response, Cornwall’s innings got off to a rocky start with both openers losing their wickets within the first powerplay. Valentine Kitime put up some fight by digging in to score 52 from 63 balls and was well supported by Jordan Neil who scored 25 from 30 balls.

Richardt Ackermann and Kyle Welman both picked up four wickets a piece, with the latter returning impressive figures of 4/9 from 4 overs. Cornwall was eventually bowled out for 112 in 17 overs and lost the match by 226 runs.

Pretoria Boys’ High School travelled up the N1 to host school Prestige College. PBHS batted first and scored 358/ from 50 overs. PBHS had two of their batsmen go on to score centuries which made up the bulk of their runs.

Opening batsman Nathan Meyer scored 106 from 103 balls and wicket-keeper batsman Hanu Viljoen scored 132 runs from 106 balls which included nine fours and six sixes. The two batted patiently and capitalized on some bad bowling.

Tim Ferguson’s rich vein of form continued as he ended up on 50 not out. The middle-order batsman now averages 237, having only been dismissed once this season for 1 in his previous knock against Waterkloof. Right-arm medium pacer Lesholo Selemela picked up figures of 2/50 in 10 overs.

With a tough challenge laid out for them Prestige College looked to chase down the large total. The team was bowled out for 196 in 42.2 overs losing by 142 runs.

Opener Sithembiso Mothise batted for over two hours and anchored the innings ending up on 89 from 96 balls which included twelve fours. None of the other batsmen provided much support other than Polite Shingange who scored a run-ball 36.

The bowling unit from Boys’ High proved too strong with opener Devon Allen picking up 3/34 from 7.2 overs. The real challenge for the batting side came when left-arm chinamen Ruan Van Rooyen was brought onto bowl. The spinner bowled neatly picking up figures of 4/35 in 10 overs.

Hoërskool Centurion played up against a strong Affies side. Affies were asked to bat first after Centurion won the toss. Affies were restricted to 257 all out from 49.3 overs. Several batsmen made starts but it was Dewald Brevis who held the innings together with a well-constructed innings of 66 from 70 balls.

Brevis was well supported by Aerton Helena who made 46 from 37 balls. The Centurion bowlers bowled well as a unit sharing the wickets amongst themselves. Four of the bowlers picked up two wickets each. Joubert Eybers and opener Zander Van Tonder were the pick of the group returning figures of 10-34-2 and 8-33-2 respectively.

With a competitive total set, Affies looked to defend it by picking the early wicket of Ryan Salomon off the bowling of Jaco Beneke. Ryan opened the batting with his brother Michael Salomon who hung in a bit longer scoring 27 from 26 balls. Beneke bowled with real control returning figures of 2/26 in 10 overs.

Centurion found it difficult to score runs throughout their innings and lost wickets at regular intervals. As dot balls accumulated so did the pressure to score runs.

Dewald Brevis was the pick of the bowlers for Affies with figures of 3/21 from 5 overs adding to an impressive day out for the all-rounder. Centurion were eventually bowled out for 144 in 39.5 overs. Affies won convincingly by 112 runs.

In the other fixture for the day, Garsfontein took on Menlopark in what was the lowest-scoring match of the three games which were taking place. The low-scoring game seemed to be the tightest match with Menlopark chasing down 181 in 48.2 overs.

Garsfontein batted first and was asked questions early on by the Menlopark opening bowlers who bowled tight lines and restricted the scoring rate in the beginning. Both openers were rewarded at the back end of the innings for their hard work upfront as each opener took three wickets.

Stephan Kruger took 3/34 in 8 overs and other opener Christiaan Daniels took 3/24 in 7.3 overs. Larno Botha top scored with 37 runs from 42 balls. Five of the Garsfontein batsmen failed to capitalize on their starts all making scores above twenty.

Menlopark’s chase started well with the two openers seeing off the new ball. Menlo number four Tristan Janse Van Rensburg was the glue which held the chase together picking up another half century scoring 59 from 84 balls. He was well supported by Wybri Thuynsma and Christiaan Daniels who both scored thirties to help guide the team home to a six-wicket win with eight balls to spare.

Garsfontein bowled well to ensure that the match was drawn out to the final stages of the innings. Benco Van Der Walt bowled neatly picking up figures of 10-23-2. He was well aided by Jethro Duigen who although didn’t pick up any wickets returned economical figures of 10-22-0.

  • Four new South African faces for World Schools Festival of 2020

Four new South African faces for World Schools Festival of 2020

WorldSchoolsFestivalsThere will be a Change of Guard for the third edition of the World Schools Festival that will be hosted by the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria next year. Affies as the school is affectionately known as, will celebrate their centenary next year.

Next year’s festival will headline Affies’ centenary celebrations and will take place from 24 to 28 March in the Jacaranda City. “We are extremely excited to host the World Schools Festival as part of our centenary celebrations,” said Jaco Koch, head coach of Affies.

Four new schools will take part in the festival – Maritzburg College, Pretoria Boys’ High and King Edward VII. All of them close rugby friends of Affies through the years. Oakdale Landbou will also take part again after missing out during last year’s festival after being one of the attendees during the inaugural World Schools Festival at Paarl Boys’ High back in 2018.

Teams that won’t make the trip to Pretoria to attend the festival again are Paarl Gimnasium, Boland Landbou and Glenwood High School of Durban. The two invitational team’s, World Schools Select and SA Invitation, also won’t be making an appearance at the festival.

Maritzburg College produced world class flyhalves like Keith Oxlee, Joel Stransky, Butch James and Peter Grant who all represented the Springboks in their illustrious careers. Stransky en James was coincidentally also the Springboks’ pivots when they were crowned World Champions in 1995 and 2007.

Other Springboks from the school includes Philip Nel (captain of the 1937 Springboks), Andy van der Watt and Jeremy Thompson

Pretoria Boys’ High is not only Affies’ neighbours in Pretoria, but also their traditional rivals. The Candies produced World Cup winning captain, John Smit. Other internationals includes Chiliboy Ralepelle (South Africa) and Brian Liebenberg (France).

King Edward VII is the alma mater of Bok hookers Malcolm Marx and Scara Ntubeni. The school also produced former international players like Bryan Habana and Joe van Niekerk.

Grey College of Bloemfontein, Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch, Monument of Krugersdorp, SACS of Cape Town and Hilton College will all be making the trip to Pretoria to add to the prestige of the World Schools Festival.

The organisers are in progress of finalising the international schools that will be attending the World School Festival.

The annual Francois Swart Rugby Week (for u15 teams) will also be hosted by Affies during the same period. Some of the matches will be played across the road at Loftus Versfeld.
