Wynberg Boys’ High could only reach 109 before being bundled out mainly thanks to some good bowling by Stephan Kruger (4/15) and Ryan Greyvenstein (3/31).

St Andrews of Bloemfontein managed to secure a four-wicket victory over St Stithians College of Johannesburg with 3.5 overs to spare.

Waterkloof started their campaign off with an 81-run victory over Diocesan College (Bishops). Jordan Hermann (58) and Christiaan du Toit (54) recorded half-centuries while Hardus Coetzer (45*) also made a valuable contribution with the bat as Klofies reached 214/5 in their 20 overs.

Du Toit and Hermann shared a 105-run partnership over the second wicket. Du Toit struck his half-century from a mere 28 deliveries.

Hermann (3/14) and Coetzer (2/19) was also the pick of the bowlers for Klofies.

Jeremy Martins produced an allround performance for Northwood as they defeated Hoërskool Nelspruit by 38 runs. Martins contributed an unbeaten 39 runs as the team from Durban reached a very competitive 194/3 in their allotted overs.

Oosthuizen hero for Westville with century on opening day

NewsGGreyNoordSuidWestville Boys’ High’s opening batsman Jared Oosthuizen (102) was the star of the opening day of the second annual Noord-Suid T20-competition in Pretoria as his century helped his school to a walloping nine-wicket victory.

Oosthuizen smashed his century from only 47 deliviers dispatching 17 past the boundary rope. Four of these boundaries at Villagers were maximums.

Oosthuizen shared a 150-run opening partnership with Daniel Trevathan (87) to set up the convincing nine-wicket victory. Trevathan lost his wicket after being caught and bowled by Lohard Janse van Rensburg (1/35).

Centurion proved they won’t just be rolling over as they defeated Rondebosch Boys’ High by 21 runs in their opening match.

Captain and opening batsman, Ryan Salomon (41), top-scored as his team reached a modest 146/9 in their allotted overs. Rondebosch’s Guy Sheena caused most of the damage with an impressive 4/12 return in his four overs.

    SA U19s kick-start World Cup preparations with four-part u19-camp

NewsGBryceParsonsCoca-Cola South Africa under-19 head coach, Lawrence Mahatlane, is determined to ensure his players are well-prepared for what is to come at the 2020 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup with a four-legged U19 Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP) camp scheduled for October.

A 13-man squad along with the coaching staff will arrive in Bloemfontein on Friday for the second leg of the camp, where they will face a Free State Senior Provincial XI at the Mangaung Oval in two 50-over clashes over the weekend.

Mahatlane aims to use the camps to help familiarise the players to the team’s style of play and the different conditions, with the matches played at the team’s possible Junior World Cup venues. The first camp was held in Kimberley last weekend, with Potchefstroom and Benoni the venues for the final two legs of the camp.

“Our first task in these camps is to make all the players try and understand the brand of cricket we are looking to play leading up to the World Cup,” Mahatlane commented on the eve of camp.

“It’s crucial that we take the players to the different venues. Then, when we arrive at the World Cup and they make the squad, we are not sitting in a position where they are strangers in their own country.

“Playing against Senior Provincial teams has shown, like it did last week, that you need to compete against more experienced players. I thought last week was a very good exercise, thanks to the Northern Cape side. To see the results of the two games, the boys learnt quite quickly what was expected and how they can play differently in those conditions.

“That was a pleasing weekend and this weekend again, taking on the Free State Provincial side, this is their home ground, they have played here every weekend, so it’ll be a good test for us,” Mahatlane continued.

Last week, the U19 TAP team took on the Northern Cape Senior Provincial XI in two highly competitive matches, with Mahatlane’s side going down by 123 runs in the first match before bouncing back and claiming a hard-fought 75-run victory in the second clash.

Amongst the 13 players called up for this weekend’s matches, Mahatlane named an experienced group including SA U19 captain, Bryce Parsons, wicketkeeper Khanya Cotani and fast bowlers, Lifa Ntanzi and Achille Cloete. There are also new faces in the camp in the mould of exciting talents, Lilitha Reed, Jade Smith and Siyathemba Mdlankomo.

“We are looking to get fresh players in every weekend, while also trying to build some continuity from the guys coming back,” the head coach confirmed. “For the new guys, it’s a learning process, and the guys that played last weekend, it’s going to be crucial for them to share their ideas with the new guys joining us, about what we’ve done and how we are looking to play.

“It is exciting to see six new players and give them an opportunity to experience playing against Senior Provincial sides,” he added.

The SA U19s are next in competitive action later this year, with three Youth One-Day Internationals against India from 26-30 December at Buffalo Park in East London.

CSA U19 TAP Squad (vs Free State):

Bryce Parsons (Gauteng), Jade Smith (Eastern Province), Ruan Terblanche (Boland), Ruan Cronje (Free State), Andrew Louw (Northern Cape), Emmanuel Motswiri (Easterns), Emihle Mqogi (Border), Nonelela Yikha (Border), Achille Cloete (Boland), Lifa Ntanzi (KwaZulu-Natal Coastal), Merrick Brett (Gauteng), Siyathemba Mdlankomo (Eastern Province), Lilitha Reed (Border)

    CSA U19 TAP Camps:

05 – 06 October – CSA U19 TAP team vs Free State (Bloemfontein)

12 – 13 October – CSA TAP U19 team vs North West (Potchefstroom)

    19 – 20 October – CSA TAP U19 team vs Easterns (Benoni)

  • DHL WP to host Vodacom Bulls in U19 Champs final

SAu19ChampionshipDHL Western Province and the Vodacom Blue Bulls will contest the final of the SA Rugby Under-19 Provincial Championship in Cape Town next week after they progressed to the decider by winning the Coastal and Inland Sections respectively.

It was tight at the top though, with only one point separating the top four teams in the end.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls topped their pool despite drawing 27-27 with the Xerox Golden Lions at Emirates Airline Park on Friday. The men from Pretoria progressed because they scored more tries in their deciding match. For a wrap of the play from Johannesburg.

And on Saturday in Paarl, DHL Western Province had to fend off a determined Cell C Sharks outfit to win their decider by 20-19.

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux said the talent on display in Johannesburg and Paarl was of a great standard and that they have identified a number of new players with an eye on the SA Under-20 squad for 2020.

“I think this tournament was a massive success and the quality on rugby displayed by these youngsters was of a very high standard,” said Roux.

“From a SA Rugby perspective, this tournament is very important and I think the new format made it even more exciting.

“We’ve just realised once again that there is a lot of wonderful talent out there – many of these players never got opportunities to play in the Youth Weeks – and they were afforded to chance to show what they can do at this tournament.

“Many players put up their hands, and it was massively encouraging to see a bunch of players from the so-called smaller unions take their opportunities, while it’s also very important for these players to be exposed to rugby at a higher level.

“There were a number of players who didn’t feature in the SA Schools team last year who put up their hands, while a handful of this year’s Junior Springboks were not in action, which gave other players opportunities.

“Our hosts, the Golden Lions and Paarl Gynmasium, deserve credit for hosting the tournament this year and it was very special for many of the players in the Inland Section to play at an iconic stadium such as Emirates Airline Park – many thanks to them.”

Regardt Roets of the Xerox Golden Lions finished the week as the top points’ scorer with 46, followed by Lionel April (Vodacom Blue Bulls) on 31 and DHL WP’s Feghon-Leigh Snyders (28).

The Xerox Golden Lions’ Morne Brandon scored the most tries, with five, while a bunch of other players – including David Kellerman (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Kabelo Mokoena (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Siyanda Cele (Toyota Free State), Cohen Jasper (Toyota Free State), Jason Alexander (DHL WP) and Muzi Manyike (Xerox Golden Lions) – ended the week with four tries apiece.

  • Blue Bulls sneaks past to Golden Lions into the u19 Championship final

NewsGLeeusBulleIn a bizarre turn of events, the Golden Lions got knocked out of the SA Rugby u19 Championship after drawing 27-all with the Blou Bulle in the final moments of their match at Emirates Airlane Park in Johannesburg.

The Blue Bulls’ prop Ethan Burger crashed over the try-line with less than a minute’s play left in their encounter on the final day of the northern regions matches in the City of Gold. The team of Pretoria’s flyhalf, Lionel April, slotted the conversion to draw the scores level.

The fact that the Blue Bulls scored four tries against the two of the Lions in the match secured them a place in the SA Rugby u19 Championship final. Most of the Lions’ points in the match came courtesy of the boot of flyhalf, Regardt Roets, who converted one of his side’s two tries and slotted five penalties.

The Blue Bulls will face the winner of the match tomorrow between the Sharks and Western Province in Paarl in the final. The date and venue of the final still need to be confirmed by SA Rugby.

The Lions boasted a positive point difference of 116 points in their three matches during the northern regions competition. The Bulls finished on a positive points difference of 108 points.

The Valke bagged their second victory on the final day by defeating the Leopards by 29-24 in a closely contested clash. The victors also had the lead by 14-12 at the break.

The Free State managed to finish the tournament on a high on Friday by thoroughly thrashing the Pumas by 112-3. The Free Staters shifted into a higher gear in the second half after already enjoying a more than comfortable lead of 42-0 at the break.

Replacement flyhalf, Eben van Niekerk, scored 22 of his side’s points as they put the Pumas to the sword in Johannesburg. Van Niekerk completed a brace of tries while also slotting six conversions for his personal points tally. Franco Smith who started as flyhalf also slotted six conversions.

  • Boland take Iqhawe Week honours at home

NewsGBolandChampionsIt was a rewarding day for Boland on the final day of the Iqhawe Week at Paarl Gymnasium on Thursday, as they delivered a scintillating performance against Griquas in the final match of the tournament for a 29-10 victory and top honours in front of their home fans.

The Bolanders got off to a flying start in the grand finale of the Under-15 competition – which is a joint venture between the South African Rugby Legends Association and SA Rugby – scoring four tries before the break, which included two by Michail Damon (fullback), to race to a 26-5 halftime lead.

This paved the way for their convincing 29-10 victory, despite the only points scored in the second half being a penalty goal by Boland and a try by Griquas. The win marked their third in as many games – a feat only Boland and the Sharks achieved in the tournament.

The Sharks, in turn, overcame a tightly-fought first half against Eastern Province in which they led 12-10 to force their way to a 26-15 victory, while the Leopards also ensured that they finished the competition strongly with six different players crossing the try line en route to their 43-5 victory against the Pumas.

The Golden Lions, meanwhile, scored four tries to three by SWD for their 31-17 victory, with their more effective goal-kicking handing them a distinct edge on the scoreboard.

There were also a number of tight contests spicing up the final day’s action, with the Griffons and Valke playing to a 17-17 draw as they scored three tries and one conversion a piece, while Border pipped Western Province 32-31 after surviving a strong second-half fightback by the Capetonians who found themselves trailing 20-5 at the break.

Free State had to work hard for their 21-19 victory against the Blue Bulls, with their extra conversion proving to be the difference on the scoreboard as both teams touched down three times.

Iqhawe Week Day 3 results (Thursday, 26 September):

    Western Province 31-32 Border
    Blue Bulls 19-21 Free State
    SWD 17-31 Golden Lions
    Griffons 17-17 Valke
    Eastern Province 15-26 KZN
    Leopards 43-5 Pumas
