BOKSBURG.

Klofies se kantman Jean Jooste was ook uitstaande.

  • Waterkloof take the spoils in thrilling derby against Monument

Waterkloof take the spoils in thrilling derby against Monument

    PHOTO: Marius Nortjé

An exhilarating Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools derby between Hoërskool Waterkloof and Hoërskool Monument in Pretoria ended in Waterkloof taking a 26-22 victory to secure bragging rights and a spot in the SDC Noordvaal Cup semi-finals.

Waterkloof trailed 14-5 at half-time, but a clinical second half performance, that included a blitzkrieg of three tries in 10 minutes, gave the boys in blue and yellow a deserved win.

It was a true see-saw encounter between the two first teams from Krugersdorp and Pretoria, with Monnas scoring three tries to Klofies’ four in a match that went over 74 minutes.

Klofies’ centre pairing of Reuven Ferreira and Riwan van Aswegen were immense in defence and attack and bagged three of their side’s tries.

Monument scrumhalf, Ceano Everson, also had a brilliant game for the visitors, with his sniping breaks and attacking play keeping defenders guessing.

Waterkloof had most of the possession and territory in the first-half, but solid Monnas defence and flair in attack gave the visitors the edge with a 14-5 lead at half-time.

Monument showed ruthlessness in attack with a brilliant 40 metre run from fullback, Kealan Milton.

His storming run, where he danced past several Klofies defenders, put scrumhalf Ceano Everson through for the first try of the match. Daylon Myners converted the try to make it 7-0 for the visitors.

Discipline was also a factor that hampered both teams in the first 15 minutes with both teams down to 14 men. Waterkloof lost inside centre Reuven Ferreira, and Monnas lost hooker Tristan da Costa, to the bin.

Waterkloof kept territory and possession for the next 10 minutes and deserved to open the scoring with hooker Stephan Jacobsz going over after constant attacking persistence in the Monnas 22.

Cronje missed the conversion and Monument kept a 7-5 lead.

The visitors made the most of Waterkloof’s mistakes, and made a crucial score just before half-time, with flanker Geoffrey French crashing over to grab his side’s second try of the match. Myners converted to make it 14-5 to Monument.

The hosts, buoyed on by fervent home support, were inches from securing their second try with the last move before half-time, but outside centre, Van Aswegen, was held up by desperate Monnas defence with the try-line calling his name.

The second-half started perfectly for Monnas with Everson scoring his second try of the match. Zain Henery got an intercept and made a speedy run before passing to Everson to finish in the corner to make it 19-5.

Waterkloof didn’t keep their heads down and responded immediately through superb play from openside flanker Jean Jooste, who made a world-class off-load to send an appreciative Reuven Ferreira over under the posts to reduce the deficit to 7 points.

Waterkloof tied the game with the try of the game from outside centre, Van Aswegen, going over after a superb build up effort started from a 22 drop-off.

Waldemar Griesel caught the ball mid-air, beating a couple of defenders. He laid the ball off to Happy Makate, who in turn saw Van Aswegen in support on his left with a perfectly timed pass. Van Aswegen did the rest, as a Cronjé conversion levelled the score at 19-19.

Waterkloof took the lead with 20 minutes to go, after they took advantage of a Monument backline error. The crowd went wild as Ferreira made the most of an unclaimed bouncing ball from an up-and under, to go through untouched. Cronje added the conversion and suddenly, Klofies had a 26-19 lead and momentum on their side in this see-saw match.

Monument narrowed the deficit to four points with two minutes to go with a Myners penalty giving the visitors a sniff.

They also had a five-metre scrum in the dying minutes of the game and one last chance to score as the game went down to the wire.

Waterkloof’s defence of 14 men held firm under immense pressure as a knock-on signalled scenes of wild celebration from the players, coaches and spectators who joined on the field with their heroes.

Oranje and Eunice to face-off once again, while Rhenish will test Paarl Gimnasium in other semi-final

    PHOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

The hosts of the annual Fairtree Super 12-tournament, Hoër Meisieskool Oranje of Bloemfontein, will have to dig deep today if they want to keep their crown as champions and probably their position on top of the national rankings.

Oranje will face their arch-rivals, Eunice of Bloemfontein, in the semi-final of the tournament at 10:40 on Saturday. Oranje defeated Eunice by 3-1 in last year’s final to be crowned champions.

Catch all the action from the tournament live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Eunice defeated Oranje earlier in the week during the final of the Southern Free State League by 4-3 in a shootout. It was the first time since 2011 that Eunice managed to defeat Oranje Southern Free State final.

Eunice also defeated Oranje (1-0) earlier this year in the semi-final of the St Mary’s Festival in Johannesburg. A victory in the semi-final could mean than Eunice dethrone Oranje at South Africa’s top girls hockey team.

Important to note is that Oranje’s captain and star player, Germarie Spershott, got injured in the Southern Free State final earlier in the week, which without a doubt had a major impact on their Super 12 campaign.

Oranje suffered two defeats during the second day of the tournament against St Mary’s Waverley (0-1) and Paarl Gimnasium (1-2) but still managed to reach the semi-finals. Eunice and Paarl Gimnasium is the only two undefeated sides left in the City of Roses.

Oranje booked their place in the semi-finals thanks to a better goal difference than St Mary’s Waverley. Both teams finished on seven log points.

Paarl Gimnasium will face Rhenish of Stellenbosch in the other semi-final. Rhenish’s only defeat thus far came against Eunice and will without a doubt test Paarl Gimnasium in their play-off match.

Paarl Gimnasium’s Arisha van Niekerk scored a brace of goals in their final pool match against Oranje to help het side bag a 2-1 victory.

  • England deliver statement win on opening day of the u18 International series

England deliver statement win on opening day of the u18 International series

    PHOTO: Charmaine Sander

PAARL.- A clinical, dominant, and statement defining performance sealed an emphatic 41-0 win for England in the opening match of this year’s u18 International Series at Boland Landbou in Paarl on Friday.

Catch all the action from the u18 International Series live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com). Broadcast brought to you by Investec.

England controlled and bossed almost every facet of the match, and with their strong forward pack, quick backline and passionate supporters on the stands managed to pull off arguably one of their best wins against the French at this level.

Going into the match, England had lost to France twice in the U18 Six Nations, their latest defeat coming earlier this year, when they went down (23-22).

In this particular clash, there were no glimpses of that, in fact, it looked like it was England that had gone on an unbeaten run.

The encounter began with high tempo, as expected. The first opportunity of the match fell to England winger, Charlie Griffin who broke the line from his own half, put In a kick, chased it only for the French to recover and dot the ball over at the back.

However, it didn’t take long for the men in red and white to register their first score of the day.

Nine minutes in, England received a penalty outside the French 22-meter line when a player failed to roll away.

They then opted to kick for touch, a decision which paid off in the end. From the resulting line-out, the side used its strong pack of forwards and overpowered France to see skipper Kepueli Tuipulotu go over the line.

If there’s one thing France will rue from the match are the chances they missed out on, knocking on three balls in front of the try line.

Those mistakes sparked the English side to life, and they grew in confidence, and started to play with intensity. They doubled their lead when an overlap on the wing saw Angus Hall score his first of two tries.

England just grew in confidence after that and started to experiment with cross-kicks and interlinking play between the forwards and backs.

Inside centre, Toby Baker put in a cross kick that was caught by Nick Lilley before he offloaded the ball to Griffin as he was being tackled, and just like that, Griffin was in for his side’s third of the match.

That try extended the score to (19-0), and with France playing with 14-men after full-back, Thomas Alary received a yellow card for foul play, there was no hope of closing the margin.

The first half ended with England leading (19-0).

At the start of the second stanza, the French side made wholesome changes, putting on a new look front row, scrumhalf, blind-side flanker and centre.

The changes didn’t seem to make any difference, as their opponents picked up from where they left off.

Eight minutes in, the English extended their lead through a try by big prop, Billy Sela, who tipped the ball in front of the try line and stormed over for his first of the match.

Ollie Davies, who had converted two of the three tries scored in the first half, converted Sela’s try, to extend his side’s lead to (29-0).

By then, France were down and out and England just needed to put one more nail in the coffin. They did that by a further two tries when Griffin scored his second of the match before Finlay Wiseman got his name on the scoreboard to seal an emphatic win for his side.

Despite the two opportunities they missed out on, France never challenged England.

They will face South Africa on Tuesday at 15:00 at Stellenberg High School, whereas England will look to do the double when they take on a Western Province invitational side at 13:00.

    Scorers:

England 41 (19) – Tries: Angus Hall (2), Charlie Griffin (2), Kepueli Tuipulotu, Billy Sela, Finlay Wiseman. Conversions: Ollie Davies (3). France 0.

    FOTO: Frans Lombard

  • Montagu hosts Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson take on Langenhoven Gimnasium

Montagu hosts Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson take on Langenhoven Gimnasium

Charlie Hofmeyr looks to return to winning ways when they travel to Montagu on Saturday.

The Charlies have looked unstoppable this season again, until they ran into Worcester Gimnasium last weekend, who managed to end their winning streak for the second year in a row with a 22-12 victory in which they prevented the team from Ceres from scoring a single try.

Charlies’ fullback, Lawrence Jantjies, scored all their points off the kicking tee in that match and has been instrumental to their success throughout the season. He will be one to watch this weekend.

They are still without their star flyhalf, Luan Giliomee, who is travelling back from Trinidad and Tobago where he earned a bronze medal as part of the SA U18 Sevens team at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

They also take the field without their big grade 11 lock, Le Roux Groenewald, who has just undergone surgery on his knee and will be out of action for the rest of the season as well as their star flanker, Tyron Davids, who has also just come out of surgery on his nose.

Montagu have been experiencing a solid season themselves though, and will be looking forward to the opportunity to add another big name to their list of victories this year.

Last weekend the Montagu boys showed immense character in protecting their unbeaten record against Bredasdorp which they have held since 2010 in an epic 8-5 thriller.

The hosts struggled against Langenhoven Gimnasium, losing by 38-7, but showed grit the weekend before that to beat Overberg by 28-26.

Their lightning-quick winger, Liam Pekeur, has been one of their standout players and will also have a big role to play on Saturday.

Charlie Hofmeyr will want to build some momentum before their big inter-schools against Robertson next weekend.

Robertson will also be desperate for some game time, as their last two matches have been called off, first due to the weather, and then the taxi strikes.

So the Robertson boys will be itching to get on the field when they travel to Oudtshoorn to play Langenhoven Gimnasium on Saturday.

Their last match, on the 22nd of July, was a romp in the Winelands when they beat Hoërskool Stellenbosch by a massive 87-0.

Luke Davids (eighth man) and Mullan Burger (winger) both scored a hattrick in that match.

The hosts are no pushover though, and they are coming off a strong 47-10 victory over York High last weekend.

Their big eighth man, Charles Jacobs, looks to be at the top of his game at the moment, and their dynamic little scrumhalf, Jayden Arends, has been phenomenal with ball in hand and off the kicking tee.

    The teams are:
