Xola Nyali (flanker) has been handed the captaincy as the South African Under-18 team prepare for their u18 International Series opener against France at Stellenberg High School in Durbanville, north of Cape Town, on Tuesday afternoon.
Nyali captained Western Province at the u18 Craven Week at the end of June and played for SA Schools against their ‘A’ team counterparts last month. Ian van der Merwe has been named vice-captain by SA u18 coach Katleho Lynch for the match against France, which kicks off at 15:00.
Lynch said the players were raring to go and that he was excited to see what this group can offer after the players delivered a spectacle in Wellington a month ago when the two SA Schools sides squared off.
“We are really looking forward to the series against France and England as there is no better way to give the boys the best possible experience of what it’s like playing at international level,” said Lynch.
“We’ve done some squad rotation and mixing and matching of players in positions and the main thing will now be to see what we’ve been working on the last couple of weeks come to fruition and executed at test level.
“I have no doubt that we have some great talent in South Africa, it’s now just a matter of putting it to the test and executing under pressure in an international match situation.”
Lynch was dealt a late blow when Divan Fuller (loose forward) was forced to withdraw from the squad, with his WP team-mate Riley Norton earning a call-up.
Earlier on Tuesday, the England U18s will face a Western Province XV (13h00). The u18 International Series concludes at Paarl Boys’ High’s Brug Street fields on Saturday when South Africa take on England (15h00), preceded by the match between France and the WP XV (13h00).
SA U18 to face France in Durbanville:
15 Luyanda Kunene, 14 Scott Nel, 13 Jameel de Jongh, 12 Dominic Malgas, 11 Cheswill Jooste, 10 Ian van der Merwe (vice-captain), 9 Christiaan van der Westhuizen, 8 Batho Hlekani, 7 Thando Biyela, 6 Xola Nyali (captain), 5 Ulrich van der Westhuizen, 4 Jaco Grobbelaar, 3 Simphiwe Ngobese, 2 Imaani Pemba, 1 Ranon Fouché. Replacements: 16 Siphosethu Mnebelele, 17 Lithemba Mfupi, 18 Jean Erasmus, 19 Riley Norton, 20 JJ Theron, 21 Haashim Pead, 22 Janco Purchase, 23 JC Mars, 24 Marno Stopforth, 25 Phiwayinkosi Kubeka, 26 Gino Cupido.
Hoërskool Pietersburg walked away with the bragging rights over Merensky after beating the visitors 38-26 in their clash of the locals in the SDC Noordvaal Cup Bowl division.
The home side got out of the blocks like a house on fire, putting the visitors under severe pressure and dominating the physical battle.
For Pietersburg it was inside centre, Wian Terblanche, who set the stage alight, finding cracks in the Merensky defence on a regular basis, getting his team on the front foot.
Terblanche linked up well with the man on his outside, Hanno van Zyl, as both men in the midfield managed to cross the whitewash to contribute a try a piece.
Upfront it was the man with the captain’s arm band, Dewan Gobey, who led from the front with an impressive performance, Gobey was seen all over the pitch as the second rower continuously put his body on the line for his team and ensuring front foot ball with his imposing ball caries.
The light blues looked shell shocked after the fiery start from the home side and couldn’t quite hit their straps early on but flyhalf, Byron Hendricks, kept his composure as he continued to succeed in his effort’s aiming at the posts. Hendricks’ good performance from the tee kept his side in the game as the youngster kept ticking over the scoreboard.
Waldie Haasbroek made his return from injury, coming of the bench. Haasbroek’s presence made a massive impact among the big men upfront, as the Craven week loose forward showed why he is so important too the light blues’ outfit.
The loss means that the light blues move down one spot to fourth place and will have to travel to Brakpan next week to face Die Anker in their semi-final.
Wesvalia ran rampant against Dr. Malan as the home side ran in 15 tries in their victory of 99-0. Junior Kuhn (hooker), Francois Dumond (openside flank), Teboho Sekonyela (right wing) all managed to contribute three tries each, scoring nine tries between the three of them. Wesvalia will now look forward too a home semi final against Eldoraigne next week.
Eldoraigne also put up a dominant display against Alberton in Pretoria, cementing their playoff spot with a victory of 67-12. The Pretoria based side made use of the game opening up as it fell right in their wheelhouse and allowed them to throw the ball around in an impressive display of what one might call Champaigne rugby. The Eldo’s focus will now shift to preparation as they look to overcome Wesvalia for the second time this season, this time away from home.
Die Anker are yet to be beaten, as the men from Brakpan got over the line comfortably by beating Potchefstroom Volkskool 43-13 in Potchefsroom on Saturday and remain favourites to be crowned champions of the Bowl Division.

Hoërskool Rustenburg proved why they are the main contenders to bring home the silverware after thumping second place Kempton Park by 38-15 in Rustenburg on Saturday.
The Rusties pack stayed true to their reputation, overpowering the team from Kempton upfront in a very physical encounter between the two sides. The dominant display upfront meant that the danger men out wide got ample opportunities to stamp their authority by racking up the points.
The openside flanker from Rustenburg, MC Smit, was outstanding, showcasing his high work rate and proving to be a menace at the breakdowns, disrupting Kempton’s ball on a regular basis.
Smit was well supported by his colleague at tight head, Carlo van Wijk, who stamped his authority at scrum time as well as being instrumental with ball in hand, the tight head also managed to cross the whitewash for a well-deserved five pointer.
At the back it was the twinkle toes flyer, Lorenzo Snyers, who impressed with his kicking performance proving that he can be a danger in all aspects of the game.
It was a tough day for the visitors, who struggled to hit their straps, allowing unforced errors to creep into their game stemming their search for rhythm. The visitor’s loose trio, led by eighthman, Milano Hattingh, stood out once again, as they countered the Rustenburg pack’s physicality with some of their own, but it deemed not to be enough to overpower the home side.
Both teams will now turn their attention to next week’s semi-finals as Rustenburg face Hoërskool Middelburg in Rustenburg and Kempton Park cross swords with Transvalia.
Transvalia made light work of HTS Middelburg in their final round robin clash of the Plate Division beating the visitors 40-11.
Hooker, Junior van Wyngaardt, led the way crossing the whitewash four times, contributing 20 of his team’s 40 points. Although, the accolade for man of the match went to fullback, Daniel Grobler, who was exceptional from the back proving to be a real problem for the Rooi Bulle’s defenders as he continuously pounced on any weaknesses in the visitor’s defence.
Transvalia’s bonus point victory means that they move to second place and secure a home semi-final where they will welcome Kempton Park in what promises to be a titanic battle.
Hoërskool Middelburg continued their good run of form on home soil, beating Zwartkop by 21-7 to secure their place in the playoffs next week. The stalwart in the front row, Fumani Chauke, had another fantastic outing, adding yet another try to his already impressive tally for the season. The Middelburg based side will travel to Rustenburg next week to battle it out for a place in the final.
The festivities in Hoërskool Klerksdorp would have been high after the home side managed to hold on to their lead and bag their first win in the division beating Montana 27-26 in a cliff hanger and ending their campaign on a positive note.
Scorers:
Hoërskool Rustenburg 38 (26) – Tries: Zulu Khumalo (2), Adriaan Liebenberg, Adriaan Young, Carlo van Wijk, MC Smit. Conversions: Lorenzo Snyers (4). Kempton Park 15 (3) – Tries: Divan Francis, Tian Aucamp. Conversion: Tiaan Delport. Penalty: Marko Opperman.

New Orleans are the victors for the fifth consecutive FNB Classic Clash after scraping by with a 13-8 victory against Klein Nederburg in another classic Paarl-derby on Saturday at the Faure Street Stadium.
While the annual derby between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High that takes place the weekend before is widely considered to be the biggest inter-schools clash in the world, some see the yearly battle between the two other proud local schools, New Orleans and Klein Nederburg, as an even bigger event.
Saturday’s rugby match lived up to all the expectations, with both squads giving their all in what they will remember as the highlight of their school rugby careers.
Since 1994, these two schools have been facing each other every year, with New Orleans enjoying the majority of the success over the years but Klein Nederburg have always made their rivals work their spoils, as is evident by the small margins most of these games are decided by.
Klein Nederburg drew the first blood on Saturday, with their talisman flyhalf, Abre Klein, converting a penalty within the first five minutes to gain the advantage.
New Orleans responded through their dynamic fullback, Je-Leo Philander, and though the rest of the first half was a stale-mate there was no lack of action.
Within minutes of fronting up to each other, most of the players wore the evidence of the physicality of the match on their chalk-smeared faces, looking like the warriors they were on the day. There were some hilarious questions for the referee by the players, exciting line breaks, monstrous tackles and even a case of mistaken identity with a yellow card all within the first 35 minutes before the two teams went to have their team talks and orange slices at half time still locked at 3-all.
New Orleans’ flyer, Jayden Solomons (winger), scored both of his team’s tries in the second half.
The first came after a brilliant run by his outside centre, Wade Bergstedt, who expertly got the ball out to Solomons to dive over.
The second was scored with four minutes left on the clock. Solomons turned on the after-burners to break the Klein Nederburg supporters’ hearts, shortly after his team received a red card for a dangerous tackle and scored what would turn out to be the winning try.
Klein Nederburg competed valiantly, despite the loss.
Their winger, Hugan Joseph, scored their only try after some quick thinking by his inside centre, Thorston Morkel, who recognized the opportunity to take a free-kick quickly and blast the ball across the field to his waiting winger who had a wide-open try-line in front of him.
The lively little scrumhalf, Eldo Draghoender, also deserves a mention for his efforts on the day.
For the victors, Philander was a standout, along with his flanker, Fayaaz Hendricks, and winger, Rozario Davids.
All in all, apart from some disciplinary issues and an injury that seemed serious to a Klein Nederburg player, this derby was a wonderful advertisement for schoolboy rugby, with both teams stepping up to produce a performance to match the hype.
u19 – New Orleans II 15, Klein Nederburg II 0. Girls – Klein Nederburg 5, New Orleans 0. u16 – New Orleans 14, Klein Nederburg 12. u15 – New Orleans 10, Klein Nederburg 5. u14 – New Orleans 19, Klein Nederburg 0.
Ligbron Akademie secured their spot in the playoffs by beating Hugenote of Springs by 34-26 in the decider of who will finish in the fourth spot.
Ligbron’s comeback will be something spoken about for a long time, coming from nearly last to qualify for the semi-finals.
The team from Ermelo has won their four encounters and has impressed many with their attractive brand of rugby. Saturday was no different as the visitors stuck to their guns, throwing the ball around and showcasing their brilliant handling skills.
The danger men in the midfield Qhawe Lukhele (outside centre) and Sithelo Zikhali (inside centre) was at the forefront as the pair continuously wreaked havoc among the Hugenote defenders getting their team on the front foot.
The platform was laid upfront by the ever-present Ayanda Mkwebane who had yet another outstanding outing in the number six jersey. Mkwebane has been instrumental for the Ermelo based side, showcasing his talent on attack and being a thorn in the side come ruck time.
For the home side there was none better than the paceman out wide, Ruan van Biljon, who rounded of two excellent tries. Not only did van Biljon contribute on attack but had a solid outing on defence as well and provided some much needed empathise for Hugenote with both teams looking to get their dangerous backlines on the front foot.
Ligbron’s celebrations will be short lived as they now set their sights on overcoming an unbeaten Secunda in their semi-final next week.
Lichtenburg put together an impressive performance on home soil to sign their season of on a high by beating Ben Vorster 32-17. The men from North West had the upper hand from the start and continued to use their opportunities to put points on the board, where as the visitors looked out of sorts and struggled to capitalise on the opportunities going their way.
Lichtenburg’s stalwart in the midfield, Antonio Vasjel, was exceptional with an impressive all-round performance, a performance judged good enough to earn the accolade for man of the match.
Secunda added yet another victory to their tally beating Heidelberg Volkskool 38-28 away from home which also meant they went unbeaten throughout the pool stages and will now look continue their impressive form and hard work as they welcome Ligbron next week.
Oos-Moot also signed of their pool stage on a high with a victory over Jeugland in Kempton Park as they came out on top 34-17. The men from Pretoria will face a tougher test as they welcome a dangerous and unpredictable Heidelberg Volkskool side for their semi-final in Pretoria next week as they look to keep their hunt for silverware alive.
