Milnerton and Melkbosstrand look to return to winning ways on Friday

NewsG BrackenfellWith both Milnerton and Melkbosstrand coming off losses over the last weekend, they will be itching for a chance to end their seasons on a positive note at their final big derby of the season on Friday.

Milnerton ran into an in-form Stellenberg team last Friday, losing 24-7, while Melkbosstrand had a difficult day against Brackenfell (48-15).

Friday’s match is the perfect opportunity for both teams to add another highlight to their respective campaigns as the winter sports season nears the end.

The last meeting between these two teams came down to the wire, with Melkbosstrand taking the victory, 16-15.

The visitors will be relying on the experience and composure of their fullback, Cyle Theys.

His winger, Ashton Januarie, came off the bench to score in their previous outing and will be keen for a chance to make an impact this weekend again.

The host’s inside centre, Frank Hitimana, is an exciting player to watch and could have a pivotal role to play for his team on Friday,

His big eighth man, Liberty Nyashanu, is also a livewire and one to keep an eye on.

On Saturday, Tygerberg and Brackenfell take each other on in a big northern suburbs FNB Classic Clash.

The Tigers will be desperate to get back to winning ways after Hoërskool Durbanville gave them a 91-0 hiding last week.

Brackenfell also went down against the Durbies the weekend before that but only lost by 45-10.

Last weekend, Brackenfell beat Melkbosstrand quite comfortably by 48-13 to get back to winning ways and they will want to keep that momentum going for this weekend’s clash.

The big eighth man, Raiden Rodney, came on as a substitution in that game and scored twice.

Rodney starts this weekend and will want to add to his tally.

  • Charlie Hofmeyr and Robertson might be the highlight on a weekend filled with derbies

Charlie Hofmeyr and Robertson might be the highlight on a weekend filled with derbies

As the rugby season draws to a close in the Western Cape, this weekend sees a number of big derbies bring an end to another exciting year of schoolboy rugby.

Watch along live on SuperSport Schools Register now

Charlie Hofmeyr will be looking to end their season strong against Robertson.

Both teams are bolstered by the return of two of their star players. Luan Giliomee from Charlie Hofmeyr, and Bernardo Diedericks from Robertson, were part of the SA u18 Sevens team that earned bronze at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

Giliomee slots in at flyhalf for Charlies, while Diedericks might make an appearance off the bench for Robertson.

When these two teams met last year in Robertson, the Charlies had to grind out a 35-34 victory, after Robertson clawed their way back from 28-5 down at halftime.

This match promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend, as both teams have been playing some really exciting rugby this season.

Robertson has had two of their games cancelled after the winter break but showed no signs of rust as they beat Langenhoven Gimnasium 26-12 last weekend.

After a flying start to the season, Charlie Hofmeyr has experienced two losses recently against Montagu (21-17) and Worcester Gimnasium (22-12), and they will be desperate to end their season on a high.

The home team’s winger, Lawrence Jantjies, has been a pillar for his team in Giliomee’s absence. If they can combine well this weekend they can ask a lot of questions of the Robertson defence.

For Robertson, their lively centre, Séan-Douglas Cedras and his lightning-quick winger, Mullan Burger, are two of the dangermen to keep an eye on Saturday.

Charlies are without their big lock, Le Roux Groenewald, and flanker, Tyrone Davids, who are both still recovering from injuries obtained during the season.

Porterville also hosts Piketeberg for their big inter-schools clash this weekend.

Porterville has been one of the standouts in the Boland this year and contributed five players to the Boland Craven Week team that competed in George earlier in the year.

Brendon September (winger), Callum van Staden (scrumhalf), Jandro Phutego (flanker), Ricky Lesch (hooker) and RW Duggan (prop) from Porterville were all selected for the provincial team.

Van Staden is not available for Saturday’s match, but the rest will all be on their posts to try to end their season on a high.

Their challengers are no pushovers though. Piketberg has been playing an exciting brand of rugby all season, spearheaded by the efforts of their evasive centre, Gelermore Baron and his dynamic flyhalf, Altino Pedro.

Worcester Gimnasium will want to draw a line under what has been a very successful season with a strong performance when they visit Hermanus.

Apart from beating most of their local rivals this year, including keeping Charlie Hofmeyr tryless as they handed them a 22-12 defeat in their own backyard, the Gimmies also pulled off a very impressive victory against a highly ranked Durban High School earlier in the season by 36-31 at the annual Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Players like Jovawn Visagie (fullback) and Hope Dliso (winger) have been electric in a bit of space, while Noah Pietersen (prop) and his mates up front have been providing opportunities with their hard work.

When these two teams met last year in Worcester, Gimmies were the victors by 13-10, they will be looking to back that performance up this weekend to draw their season to a close.

Swartland and Hugenote will take each other on for the 47th time as they bring their seasons to a close with a festive finale in Malmesbury

The Faure Stadium in Paarl will be packed for the third consecutive weekend when Paulus Joubert and Noorder-Paarl conclude their seasons with a big inter-school clash this weekend.

To the East, in Oudtshoorn, Langenhoven Gimnasium and Hoërskool Punt are competing in their big derby for a chance to end the season on a high.

Last year, Punt took the spoils with a 10-0 victory, so the Gimmies will be anxious to set the record straight this year.

Despite having a mixed season, Hoërskool Punt showed their steel recently with a big 24-18 victory against Daniel Pienaar from Uitenhage.

  • Oldest schoolboy rugby derby in the country continues when SACS host Bishops

Oldest schoolboy rugby derby in the country continues when SACS host Bishops

NEwsGSACSPaarlGimSACS and Diocesan College are celebrating their 150th year of rivalry this year, with Bishops getting the first victory by 31-25 earlier in the season, SACS will be looking to level the scores in the return fixture on Saturday.

Wynberg Boys’ High will be looking to build on a strong performance last weekend, when they beat Bishops 27-20 after losing to them earlier in the season (14-10). They will be hoping to have the last laugh against Rondebosch Boys’ High this weekend as well.

Rondebosch won the first game against Wynberg this year by 20-16 at home earlier in the year and the hosts will be excited for the opportunity to get their retribution this weekend.

Catch all of the action live on SuperSport Schools Register now

Bishops’ playbreaker scrumhalf, Haashim Pead, stood out when they beat SACS earlier in the year, and he has been a central part of their attack throughout the season. Pead is unavailable this weekend, as he has been selected as part of the SA u18 team to play England on Saturday.

Kashief Joseph steps up to fill his boots on Saturday, with the benefit of having the experienced Shaywan Blankenberg (flyhalf) next to him.

The visitors’ fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, has also been exceptional this year, helping them defeat all three of their southern suburb rivals in the first round of fixtures, and earning a spot in the SA A team after his performance at the Craven Week in George.

Nic Allison (centre) got over the line for Bishops the last time they played against SACS and will be looking to repeat the success of that weekend.

SACS big Craven Week tighthead prop, Ikhona Maxegwana, has been a stalwart for his side, leading the charge from the front since their captain, the loosehead prop, Ali Osman-Bosch, suffered an injury earlier in the season.

The dynamic centre, Daniel Dayaram, has assumed the captaincy and will be in the thick of it again on Saturday, trying to help his team to a victory over their age old rivals.

Throughout their illustrious histories both of these schools have produced some outstanding alumni.

SACS have 32 Springboks among their graduates, from Ben Duff, who played in the Sprinboks’ first ever test match, to Percy Montgomery who ran out for the national team 102 times.

Diocesan College have 42 Springboks who have walked their grounds, including Barry Heatlie who captained the Springboks to their first ever test win in 1896 when the beat the British Isles 5-0 in Cape Town.

Most recently Dillyn Lleyds earned his first cap in 2017.

Wynberg Boys’ High look for retribution when they host Rondebosch Boys’ High after their loss earlier in the season, but they will have to do without their captain, Xola Nyali (flanker), who has been selected for the SA u18 team to face England on Saturday.

Nyali also captained the SA u18s earlier in the week when they lost to France by 37-24.

Jarrod Jackson replaces him in the back row next to Euwyn Liberty (flanker) and Aden da Costa (eighth man) who have been extremely effective for their team on defence and in turning over the ball.

They played well to set the record straight against Bishops last weekend and will be looking to their speedsters, Brandon Ashburner (centre) and Xolela Hoyi (winger) to spearhead the attack.

Hoyi will be starting at fullback this weekend to cover for the injured Matthew Ould, making space for Tyrone Gombe on the wing.

Rondebosch have looked strong all season, with players like Nichollas Molyneux (fullback) and Juma Amissi (winger) looking dangerous in space, and the two industrious flankers Sunday Mailoni-Burns and Polite Phiri also being notable every weekend.

    The teams are:

SACS vs Diocesan College at 12:15:

SACS: 15 Aya Machuli, 14 Nick Reynolds, 13 Daniel Dayaram, 12 Raashied Conrad, 11 Ilitha Ntinini, 10 Rayaan Solomons, 9 Seth Bradford, 8 Niche Koopman, 7 Ben van Coller, 6 Richard Skeeles, 5 Khwezi Ndlovu, 4 Zach Kennedy, 3 Ikhona Maxegwana, 2 Alex Pybus, 1 Tumelo Noah.

Diocesan College: 15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Ayanda Bonoyi, 13 Olo Sopotela, 12 Nic Allison, 11 Lucca Mynhardt, 10 Shaywan Blankenberg, 9 Kashief Joseph, 8 Aidan Norris, 7 Alex Smith, 6 Tapiwa Nkumanda, 5 CJ Gordon, 4 Zach Willemse, 3 Nashe Chahwahwa, 2 Merlin Fransman, 1 Richard Horton.

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Rondebosch Boys’ High at 12:30:

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Xolela Hoyi, 14 Matteo Pascoe, 13 Brandon Ashburner, 12 Amier Adams, 11 Tyrone Gombe, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Sange Mbuto, 8 Aden da Costa, 7 Euwyn Liberty, 6 Jarryd Jackson, 5 Michail Kasfikis, 4 Montgmomery Loggenberg, 3 Luqobo Makwedini, 2 Nicholas van Schalkwyk, 1 Aidan Reid.

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 Nichollas Molyneux, 14 Juma Amissi, 13 Juandre Welthagen, 12 Mathew Malherbe, 11 Ethan Gordon, 10 Dylan Miller, 9 Cameron Whitson, 8 Ryan du Rand, 7 Sunday Mailoni-Burns, 6 Polite Phiri, 5 Tom Barnard, 4 Carl Geddie, 3 Zev Schapiro, 2 Thomas van Wyk, 1 Justin Amos.

Transvalia: 15 Daniel Grobler, 14 Nkanyiso Mccamel, 13 Kyle Esterhuizen, 12 Brandonlee Smit, 11 Kani Mohapi, 10 Duan du Toit, 9 Anro Nagel, 8 Anro Labuschagne, 7 Xander Mcniel, 6 Wynand Stols, 5 Danie Beytel, 4 Vincent Brits, 3 Arne Botes, 2 Junior van Wyngaardt, 1 Dylan Booth.

Kempton Park (moontlik): 15 Joshua Meyer, 14 Ryan Smith, 13 Marko Opperman, 12 Tiaan Delport, 11 Tian Aucamp, 10 Zander de Jongh, 9 Keagan Trollip, 8 Preston Smith, 7 Milano Hattingh, 6 Ruben Turketti, 5 Kyle Botha, 4 Divan Francis, 3 Adrian Labuschagne, 2 Brendon Gerber, 1 Zeke Shaw.

Hoërskool Rustenburg vs Hoërskool Middelburg in Rustenburg om 12:00:

Hoërskool Rustenburg: 15 Tiano Combrinck, 14 Zulu Khumalo, 13 Adriaan Liebenberg, 12 Awie Alberts, 11 Lorenzo Snyers, 10 Henre Viljoen, 9 Nathan van Aswegen, 8 Adrian Young, 7 Sybrandt Byleveldt, 6 MC Smit, 5 PJ Engelbrecht, 4 Pedri Human, 3 Carlo van Wijk, 2 Zander Steenkamp, 1 Werner Kinnear.

Hoërskool Middelburg: 15 Divan van der Westhuizen, 14 Yende Mthokozisi, 13 Smiley Sibande, 12 Luke Geldenhuys, 11 Blessing Hamandishe, 10 Crawford Joubert, 9 Simtha Maseko, 8 Kaylin Maphutha, 7 Tjaart Joubert, 6 Zulu van Niekerk, 5 Rogan van der Walt, 4 Wandisa Mthombeni, 3 Tebogo Nkosi, 2 Ruben Salzwedel, 1 Shaun Marx.

Discipline key for Theron and Co against England

PAARL.- The SA u18 team will need to stay disciplined and limit errors if victory is anything to come by when they take on an unbeaten England side in their final match of the u18 International series in Paarl on Saturday.

Catch all the action from the u18 International Series live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com). Broadcast brought to you by Investec.

South Africa, come into the must win clash on the back of a disappointing (37-24) defeat at the expense of France in their first clash of the series in Bellville on Tuesday. While England ran riot in both their matches against France (41-0) and the Western Province invitational team (78-15).

In their match against France, Katleho Lynch’s side was totally outplayed in the first half, and their lack of discipline at the breakdown, giving the ball, and possession away resulted in the home side trailing by 23 points at the halfway mark.

The home side attempted to stage a fightback in the second half and looked rather impressive on attack, scoring their first points of the match right after kick-off through scrumhalf replacement, Haashim Pead.

Pead, who was one of the two changes made early in the second stanza with Janco Purchase, stamped his authority on the match, providing quick ball from the ruck, and catching France off guard on numerous occasions.

He went on to score his second try of the match, before Purchase got in on the action with a five pointer of his own, giving South Africa more reason to believe.

That joy would soon be short lived however, when France hit back with two tries of their own through Eliott Duthil, and Gabin Garault, who exposed the cracks in the home side’s defensive system.

Lynch’s side would go on to finish the encounter on a high when Sharks man, Luyanda Kunene dotted over in the corner to bring some respectability to the score.

The four tries, and two conversions scored by South Africa proved to be not enough, as France managed to seal a 13-point victory, and in the process bounced back from that humbling (41-0) defeat against England in their opening match.

Going into the final clash, South Africa have made wholesome changes to the team that faced France during the week.

Firstly, Grey Bloem stalwart JJ Theron has been named captain of the team with speedster JC Mars named as vice-captain.

The duo will no doubt have an impact on how proceedings go in the clash, with Mars having shown glimpses of what he can do on the international stage when he produced an impressive cameo off the bench in the defeat against France.

As for Theron, the Free-State man  is no stranger to big occasions having helped Grey College get past some grueling encounters this season, and captaining his country for the first time, in a must win match, he will surely look to make a difference.

Despite the inclusion of Mars and Theron, only four players from the defeat against France managed to keep their spot in the team, and those players are wings Scott Nel and Cheswill Jooste, loose forward Batho Hlekani, and lock Jacobus Grobbelaar.

South Africa will face an English side high in confidence. The clash between the two sides kicks-off at 15:30 at Paarl Boys High.

In the earlier match of the day, Western Province Invitational will take on France at 13:00.

The home side were humiliated by England during the week, despite showing glimpses of attractive rugby late in the first half. They however allowed the English to run all over them in the second half and record that emphatic 78-15 win.

A for France, finishing the series on a high will be the message in the locker room, and having upset hosts South Africa, the French will surely be eyeing a high scoring encounter.

Wholesale changes as SA u18’s gear up for England

South Africa Under-18 coach Katleho Lynch has made wholesale changes to his team for their second and final match in the u18 International Series when they face England in Paarl on Saturday, including handing the captaincy to JJ Theron, while JC Mars has been named vice-captain.

Catch all the action from the u18 International Series live on SuperSport Schools – (www.supersportschools.com). Broadcast brought to you by Investec.

Only four of the players who started against France on Tuesday, have been included in the starting team this weekend – wings Scott Nel and Cheswill Jooste, loose forward Batho Hlekani – who moves from No 8 to flanker – and lock Jacobus Grobbelaar.

Lynch was also forced to call up Kyle Smith, who takes over from the flyhalf duties from his injured SA Scools team-mate Ian van der Merwe. Ranon Fouche (prop), who was injured against France, was not replaced in the squad.

The two players who were part of the SA U18 Sevens squad at the Commonwealth Youth Games earlier this month, Gino Cupido (centre) and Marno Stopforth (flanker), have both been named in the starting team.

“Our plan from the outset was to give all the players in the squad enough game time as we need to see who can make the step up, hence all the rotational changes to thesquad,” said Lynch.

“Many of the players who were on the bench against France and who helped the team lift the intensity in the second half of that game, will now start and it’s a greatopportunity for everyone to test themselves for a second time against a quality international side. I have no doubt we will be better on Saturday.”

Lynch is under no illusions about the enormity of the task that awaits his charges at Paarl Boys’ High on Saturday – England beat France by 41-0 last week and on Tuesday, they won 78-15 against the Western Province XV.

“Obviously we have to start much better this time around as we are facing a very well-coached side who play with speed and momentum,” said the coach.

“We have to try and control that and stop their momentum, but we will also be looking for better synergy between our forwards and backs.”

The kick-off time of the match against England has been moved to 15h30 and the game will be broadcast on the SuperSport Schools app, as well as on channel 216 on DSTV. The match between France and the Western Province XV is scheduled for 13h00.

SA u18 team to face England in Paarl:

15 JC Mars (vice-captain), 14 Scott Nel, 13 Gino Cupido, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Cheswill Jooste, 10 Kyle Smith, 9 Haashim Pead, 8 JJ Theron (captain), 7 Batho Hlekani, 6 Marno Stopforth, 5 Riley Norton, 4 Jaco Grobbelaar, 3 Jean Erasmus, 2 Siphosethu Mnebelele, 1 Lithemba Mfupi.

Oakdale Landbou t. Boland Landbou om 13:00:

Oakdale Landbou: 15 Waylon Kortjie, 14 Duraan Janse van Rensburg, 13 Louis Fourie, 12 Kurt Coetzee, 11 Therlow Prins, 10 Zandre Conradie, 9 Tian Ferreira, 8 Erick Steyn, 7 Migail Barnard, 6 Hanno Louw, 5 Roy Viljoen, 4 Hanre Jubelius, 3 Devon Windvogel, 2 JC van Wyk, 1 Marco Steyn.

Boland Landbou: 15 Dewald de Villiers, 14 Wehan Lume, 13 Ruan Jongsma, 12 Albie Bester, 11 Enslin Claasen, 10 Retagan van Rooi, 9 Turlon Adams, 8 AJ van der Merwe, 7 Alru Gous, 6 Hans Verster, 5 Ruan Viviers, 4 Karst Smits, 3 Pieter de Jager, 2 Cilliers Viljoen, 1 Christoff Etzebeth.

With Bloemfontein being the capital of hockey this year, having hosted the SASHOC u18-tournament and Fairtree Super 12-tournament, it will be hosting another massive clash this Friday between Grey College and Paul Roos Gimnasium

Be sure to catch the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

Thus far, Paul Roos has proven themselves a formidable team, ten players who represented Boland u18A during the SASHOC-tournament.

The ten players are Aon Hendricks, Barend Geldenhuys, Beor van Reenen, Jake Downie, Joshua Smit, Keith Siebrits, Paul Roos, Rueben Sendzul, Ryan Williams and Zeke Hougaard

Hougaard was also awarded the Midfielder of the Tournament at the Cape Town International Hockey Tournament earlier this year. He also made the nationals schools side after the conclusion of the SASHOC-tournament.

Grey College’s captain, Roan Janse van Rensburg, is their key player in tonight’s clash. Janse van Rensburg has been the leading goal scorer for his team during the season. He helped Grey to finish as runners-up during the Gushkie Top Schools-tournament thet hosted last week.

Janse van Rensburg won Striker of the Tournament, with the Best Goalkeeper award going Grey’s to Eben Joubert. It was quite a surprise that van Rensburg was not included in the SA Schools-side.

The magnitude of this historic interschool is alluded to by the 70 sports teams that will be travelling from Stellenbosch, the first time since 2018 and the pandemic struck.

Their first meeting dating back to 1967.

    The teams:

  • Hudson Park look to end season on four game winning streak against Cambridge

Hudson Park look to end season on four game winning streak against Cambridge

NewsG DaleCollegeAfter being successful in their last four games, most recently their 17-14 defeat of Dale College last Saturday, and amassing ten wins so far this season, Hudson Park will be looking for yet another win on Saturday.

In addition to this, this will not be Hudson and Cambridge’s first encounter this year. On the 15th of April, the Eastern Cape rivals took the field which ultimately culminated in a 43-29 victory for Hudson Park.

If Hudson Park are successful on Saturday, it will be their fourth consecutive win and their eleventh of the season.

Another big rivalry taking place this weekend is Queen’s College vs Dale College.

In a tradition that began over a century ago, in 1891, Queen’s and Dale will once again take the field this Saturday.

To say that Queen’s has had a strong season would be an understatement, they have accumulated fourteen victories so far and will be looking for number fifteen this Saturday.

One of their fourteen victories took place against Dale, at their first encounter, earlier this year.

In 2019, Dale won on both occasions. After a two hiatus, in 2022, Queen’s took the victory at both encounters.

Dale has certainly taken some big wins of their own this year, and if they are successful this Saturday, it will be their tenth this year.

This rematch will definitely provide some high-stakes, competitive rugby.
