Candies leave St John’s feeling blue

Pretoria Boys’ High cooked up a storm on Burger Field, making light work of St John’s College and winning by a 34-point margin, the final score sitting at 39-5 to the visitors.

The Candies showed a dominant display of offensive play, cutting through The Blues defence like a hot knife through butter. The team scored seven tries amongst themselves, making sure that there was no opportunity for the home side to break into the match.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

By the halfway mark, the score was already sitting at 24-0, with the away team putting themselves in a strong position, displaying their hunger for points and a much-needed win.

St John’s College found solace in creating one scoring opportunity, through an overlap which was put away excellently by winger Jacob Smith and thus avoiding a potential whitewash.

Winger Ntasko Ndlovu, helped himself to two tries during the game, and would have been eyeing the try line for a potential hat-trick and looked dangerous for The Candies.

The Blues would have backed their defences going into the match, having shown throughout the season they are willing to put up a fight, if it means sacrificing flashy play. Unfortunately, this was not the case and nor was it enough to slow down the barrage of attacks thrown their way from the opposition.

Potentiall,y the score could have read a lot more than it did, with several placement kicks getting missed by the school from Pretoria. The side would feel that it has been one element of their play which has not quite been on par with some of the other teams this year.

Pretoria Boys’ High School will now need to wait a few weeks until their next fixture, with exams and a school holiday looming.

The last part of the season sees the school face up against long-standing rivals King Edward VII for the return fixture and Affies, both highly competitive teams this year.

How will the school on the hill fare in the final half of the season? Only time will tell.

Paarl Gimnasium showed why they are considered among the top sides this year with another powerful performance against the visiting Oakdale Landbou, beating them 36-12.

Watch the game on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The home team were dominant throughout the game, but they were especially imposing in the first half, during which they completely overpowered Oakdale.

They went into the halftime break with a convincing 24-0 lead, this would also end up being their winning margin as both teams scored 12 points in the second half.

An early try by Jannie Grobbelaar (hooker), after a well-executed lineout move got the home team on the scoreboard first.

Dawid Kotze (scrumhalf), Kyle Smith (flyhalf) and Louw du Toit (flanker) then scored in quick succession after about 20 minutes, to build a comfortable buffer for their team.

Smith, who has been chosen to represent Western Province at flyhalf at the Craven Week, showed his world-class ability when he scored his try, receiving the ball in his own half, and cutting through the defence, untouched.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended. Hennie Otto (centre), who attended Oakdale Landbou before coming to Paarl Gimnasium, found a gap and broke the line against his old alumni and gave the ball out to Freek de Kock (winger) who could dive over the line to extend their lead.

Even when the Oakdale players seemed to find their rhythm in the second half, the Gimmies remained steadfast and it took a full 60 minutes before Roy Viljoen (lock) managed to burst over the line for his team’s first points.

Scoring a try seemed to energize the visitors, and Erick Steyn (eighthman) scored another, which he managed to convert as well.

The Gimmies were never in trouble though, Nicolas Nel (eighthman) scored the final try, in the last moments of the game, to get the last word in for the hosts.

This Paarl Gimnasium side is looking better every week, and having only lost one game against Grey College 33-12 earlier in the season, it seems unlikely that they will lose again this year.

They will especially be looking forward to the big Paarl derby against Paarl Boys’ High at the end of the year.

Boishaai have 11 players in the two WP Craven Week sides, as opposed to the five Gimmies in those teams, but Paarl Gim will probably still enter that match as favourites, based on current form.

Because of the extraordinarily heavy rainfall in the region, only the top teams travelled from Oakdale, as some of the fields weren’t playable this weekend.

Paarl Gim almost managed a whitewash against the visitors, with Oakdale’s U16 A team being the only ones who managed to secure a victory over the weekend.

    Scorers:

Paarl Gimnasium 36 (24) – Tries: Freek de Kock, Kyle Smith, Dawid Kotze, Nicolas Nel, Louw du Toit, Jannie Grobbelaar. Conversions: Smith (2), Tazreeq Moerat. Oakdale Landbou 12 (0) – Tries: Roy Viljoen, Erick Steyn. Conversion: Steyn.

PRETORIA.

  • Maritzburg College earns a 36-14 victory in an epic battle against the Knights

Maritzburg College earns a 36-14 victory in an epic battle against the Knights

    PHOTO: Martin Ashworth

When Maritzburg College and Northwood took the field on Saturday, it was fast paced from the get-go.

Within one and half minutes, a penalty was awarded to Maritzburg. Rhett Quin went for the tap and go, offloading to the forwards to break through the defence.

Thirty seconds later, College was awarded another penalty. There was clearly a plan of action as to how they would approach this; Luc du Toit kicked for the left corner, and it was lineout two metres off the Knights try line.

College gained possession and it was a push towards Northwoods try line, Maritzburg did not cease and the sheer force broke through the defence; Phiwayinkosi Kubheka scored the first try for Maritzburg and of the game. Du Toit succeeded in the conversion and Maritzburg was seven up.

It did not take long for College to strike again; with the backline wanting in on the action this time. Swelihle Mbatha charged down the far right of the field and scored Maritzburg their second try. When Luc du Toit made the second conversion, they had really taken control of the game.

Northwood would not allow half-time to come without putting some points on the board and they were ready for a fight. Luthando Makula made a long pass to Nokuthenda Gunda who seized the opportunity ahead of him, sprinting up left field to score a try for Northwood and get them back in the game. Cade Latham put the conversion through and narrowed the gap.

Despite the fight from both sides for the next seventeen minutes, the score remained at 14-7 until the end of the first half.

The second half followed the same trajectory as the first with Maritzburg opening the scoring and earning the first try by way of Rhett Quin. With Luc du Toit making the conversion, Maritzburg had a decent cushion at 21-7.

This lead was only extended when College was granted a penalty kick and Du Toit once again converted to get them the extra three points.

When time was almost up, with less than seven minutes on the clock, Maritzburg once again found themselves just metres off Northwood’s try line. Du Toit goes for the tap and go, offloading to Luyanda Kunene who easily breaks through the defence and scores another try for College. When Du Toit converted the fourth try, the window was closing for the Knights to make a comeback.

Minutes later, Luyanda Kunene sprinted from the fifty-metre line to score his second try and what would be Maritzburg’s final play of the game.

Northwood put the final points on the board with a try from Siyanda Nkosi and subsequently the conversion from Cade Latham.

This was not, however, enough to secure them the victory against Maritzburg, who had gained a massive lead throughout the game. The Knights and College both put up a great fight, but it was College who were victorious and left the field as champions today.

    Scorers:

Maritzburg College 36 – Tries: Luyanda Kunene (2), Phiwayinkosi Kubheka, Swelihle Mbatha, Rhett Quin. Conversions: Luc du Toit (4). Penalty: Luc du Toit. Northwood 14 – Tries: Nokuthenda Gunda, Siyanda Nkosi. Conversions: Cade Latham (2).

  • St Andrews makes last minute quick recovery to beat Queens

St Andrews makes last minute quick recovery to beat Queens

NewsGStAndrewsCollWhen St Andrew’s College and Queen’s College took the field today, it was a close game if there ever was one.

The first sixteen minutes did not see any points being scored, but rather both schools fighting to keep the other at bay while simultaneously trying to gain ground.

At sixteen minutes, a penalty called in favour of Queens but was shortly overturned in favour of St Andrews, with St Andrews opting to make the kick and gain some forward momentum; ideally putting the initial points on the board.

Daniel Hickey made the kick from quite an unfavorable position, a good distance away and far off to the right, granting St Andrews the three points and giving them an edge in the game.

When Queens were granted a free kick, it made some distance but fell into the position of Jacques Cloete with a brilliant catch. There was no hesitation, and he ran straight ahead, the defence were not prepared for the quick breakthrough.

Cloete outpaced his chasers and put the ball down with ease to score the first try for St Andrews and of the game. Daniel Hickey came through with the conversion and St Andrews were ten points ahead with just over six minutes left in the first half of the game.

It seemed like 10-0 would remain until half time, until St Andrews backline found themselves offside and a penalty was granted to Queens.

Queens opted for the kick; Turshaan Hare succeeded, and Queens was back in the game. Hare repeated this play at the end of the first half, narrowing the gap and ending the first half at 10-6 to St Andrews.

Queens weren’t wasting any time as the second half commenced, with Axola Khatshwa scoring a try at under three minutes into the game. Queens made some quick passes down the line, opening the opportunity for their captain to score their first try game of the game. Queens now had the lead for the first time this game.

This lead was maintained, and it seemed they had it in the bag, as nothing changed on the score board for the next half an hour.

When St Andrews were granted another penalty and time had run out, this would be the final play of the game and all pressure was on Daniel Hickey when St Andrews decided to go for the kick. Daniel Hickey made it look easy, the kick was good, and St Andrews had won the game in the nick of time.

The celebration from players and fans was once in a lifetime, it was a moment that will live on forever and a story that will be cemented in St Andrews legacy.

    Scorers:

St Andrews College 13 – Tries: Jacques Cloete. Conversions: Daniel Hickey. Penalties: Daniel Hickey (2). Queen’s College 11 – Tries: Axola Khatshwa. Penalties: Turshaan Hare (2).

  • When the Saints come marching in

When the Saints come marching in

A battle of the saints will take place this weekend in Pretoria and Johannesburg, giving independent schools much to talk about.

In the match of the day, St Alban’s College hosts their annual Old Boys Day, where they will be facing up against their rivals St Stithians College, where the First XV kicks off at 14:00 on Moshate Field.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com)

These two sides met earlier in the season, where St Stithians were on the winning side of things, taking that match 31-24 on their home-turf.

The Hoops will be rearing to go, having beaten Northcliff High School last weekend at home. Captain Luke Webber filled his pockets with a hat-trick of tries, making light work of Northcliff’s defences and will want his personal form to inspire his team.

Last weekend’s combination of Tumelo Mohale and John-Joshua Steenkamp in the two centre positions really added some impetus to the backline, creating some fantastic running opportunities for the rest of the backline.

St Albans have made a few changes to this weekend’s starting XV, with Luke Saas returning to the fullback position after missing out last weekend due to an injury. He has a massive boot on him, and with his physical stature can hold his own.

St Stithians, going into this match, have had to make plenty of changes from the side that started earlier in the season. A string of injuries and sickness has meant that several regulars will be missing out.

Nthabeleng Mafole, starts for the first time in the important fly-half position. He was recently named in the Lions’ u17 side.

The team’s front row has remained consistent with Keabetswe Mapukana, Braedon Hollingworth and Branden Lightfoot all looking to perform. They will be up against a strong St Alban’s forward pack, who have scored several tries this season from mauls close to the try line.

Historically, there have been some close matchups between the two schools, and on the odd occasion, things on the field can get heated, making for some great entertainment.

The Hoops will be eager to get one back on their rivals, with the home support and the backing of a passionate group of old boys, they would back themselves to win.

St Benedict’s College will be taking on St David’s Marist in another Founder’s Day clash, with the match taking place in Illovo, Johannesburg.

St Benedict’s will fancy themselves going into this match as favourites, having put in some top performances against St Albans and Parktown recently, with fullback Onkgopotse Monaheng and Sabelo Shangase showing their class.

Although losing to St John’s last weekend, the side were in front most of the match but struggled to keep The Blues from winning 34-22.

St David’s has had a tough season, struggling to find form and wins against some of the other all-boys schools. Captain Mariano Paolantonio will need to lead from the front as St Davids look to take home a win on the special occasion.

    Teams:

St Alban’s College: 15 Luke Sass, 14 Michael Rider, 13 John-Joshua Steenkamp, 12 Tumelo Mohale, 11 Nkosi Malaza, 10 Druan Visage, 9 John Verster, 8 Daniel Bouwer, 7 Matthew Price, 6 Patrick Weir, 5 Llyod Schneeberger, 4 William Von Broembsen, 3 Craig Milne, 2 Luke Webber, 1 Cody Petersen.

  • Garsie Bere soek soete wraak teen gewonde Wit Bulle

Garsie Bere soek soete wraak teen gewonde Wit Bulle

PRETORIA.

Garsfontein: 15 Jason Hugo, 14 Ruan Enslin, 13 Dimitre Erasmus, 12 Heinrich Cloete, 11 Cassie Prinsloo, 10 Nicallen Gabrielsen, 9 Zian Cilliers, 8 Abri van der Westhuizen (kaptein), 7 Aiden King, 6 Luan Olivier, 5 James Schnetler, 4 Jacques Swarts, 3 Leighton Cloete, 2 De Wet Lottering, 1 DA Swart.
