  • Western Cape champions to be crowned this Saturday during Top Schools

Western Cape champions to be crowned this Saturday during Top Schools

Over 50 schools will compete against each other in the Top Schools tournament on Saturday.

This annual tournament will be held at Hoërskool Parel Vallei in Somerset West.

The games will begin at 09:00 with teams playing on ten courts. Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schoolswww.supersportschools.com

There will be 14 rounds where each match consists of two halves.

    Each half lasting 12 minutes.

Paarl Gimnasium have been preparing for the tournament from the beginning of the season. With one of their goals, being the top three in the country.

Last year their u14, u16 and u17 teams qualified for the South African Championships.

“The u18 teams’ level of play is really high. Anything can happen because there is not a team at this moment which is running the show. Everyone is quite evenly matched, but we are prepared to face some tough challenges,” Renske Stoltz, the first team coach, told SuperSport Schools.

“Everyone knows what is expected of them and now it’s up to them to put it out on court” she concluded.

Langenhoven Gimnasium did not participate last year but believes that this year they will be more ready. They have been training four times a week, which includes gym sessions, fitness for preparation and participating in their league games.

“I have an unbelievable group of children. Although there are only three players who are 18 years old in the first team, I still have a strong team. They have a bond where they look out for each other,” said Charmaine Stemmet, the first team coach.

“There are stronger schools but the last such team we faced was Outeniqua, we lost with only seven points, so we are not far behind them. Support is also important in the team but emotionally they need support from the coach. That is why teamwork is important” she concluded.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu Secondary School will compete in the Top Schools for the first time. Only one team will participate, their u19 team. “The first team is doing very well. One of the best teams the school has ever had” Nkululeko Mhlongo, their netball manager said.

The school hired a professional coach who is very experienced and is confident that their team will do well. Despite the challenges of lack of resources, players such as Ovayo Thumtha Sibekekwane and Bulelwa Nyalela have proven that their lack of resources does not move them. They were part of the Western Cape provincial team.

Kayamandi Secondary School will also be participating for the first time. They have played six games in their league so far, winning only two. The school does not have a designated coach. “We try our best to convince them by motivating them to play, despite their visible challenges,” said Yolani Furunek.

“Our training is focused on teaching them how to pass the ball, we are focusing on the basics since they do not have a coach,” she concluded.

    The Fixtures – u19A:

09:00 – Durbanville vs La Rochelle; Groenberg vs Langenhoven Gimnasium; Swartland vs Paarl Girls’ High; Jan van Riebeeck vs Weston; Manzamtomb vs Paarl Gimnasium.

  • Queen’s looking to make it a dozen against St Andrew’s College

Queen’s looking to make it a dozen against St Andrew’s College

NewsGQueensCollege1Queen’s College has been on quite the rampage this year, winning a large majority of their many games. It is no surprise then that Queens has many of their players taking part in Craven Week.

Queens has an impressive seven players joining the Border team for Craven Week, these players are Abulele Boltini, Sbongakonke Mfeya, Kyle Alwin, Turshaan Hare, Lwanele Gaba, Jed Stone and Thina Fenako. Thina Jaxa, who plays for Queens 1st team, took part in Craven Week last year.

Queens also has two squad members, Mbasa Nda and Ryan Denston, taking part in this years Academy Week.

It is no wonder that such a powerhouse squad has taken so many victories this season, including their 22-0 defeat of Die Brandwag, their 75-14 win over Stirling, a 46-3 defeat over Port Rex and two wins over Hundson Park at 27-7 and 18-13.

Queens is going to put up a solid fight on Saturday.

St Andrew’s have earned some accolades of their own this season, they have taken six victories against some tough competition.

St Andrew’s started their season with a 24-3 defeat over Stirling. Later on, in a highly competitive game against Graeme College, they managed to take the win with a one point difference at 24-23.

Most recently, St Andrew’s defeated Selborne College with a final score of 26-13. This was no small feat, as Selborne have shown that they can maul the competition.

Both schools will bring top rugby on Saturday, and Queens will surely have a few tricks up their sleeve just as we’ve seen in their last few games. It will definitely be some entertaining rugby, but only one side can walk away as champions. Only time will tell.

    The teams:

St Andrew’s College: 15 Oliver Snart, 14 Jacques Cloete, 13 Joe Bennie, 12 Sintu Mjali, 11 Murray Wilson, 10 Daniel Hickey, 9 Luke Rowley, 8 Andrew Baisley, 7 Jason Dovey, 6 Sinjhun Cawse, 5 Charlie Beaton, 4 Oliver Myatt-Taylor, 3 Ayamnkele Dongwana, 2 Joe Wostenholm, 1 Connor Brand.

Queen’s College: 15 Siya Konki, 14 Jed Stone, 12 Litha Kulashe, 11 Thina Fenako, 10 Turshaan Hare, 9 Ryan Denston, 8 Axola Khatshwa, 7 Mbasa Nda, 6 Sisipho Mpaka, 5 Uyanda Mlungwana, 4 Thina Jaxa, 3 Abulele Bolotini, 2 Sbongakonke Mfeya, 1 Kyle Aylwin.

    The fixtures:

12:30 Cambridge vs Selborne College; 13:20 Hudson Park vs Stirling; 14:00 Dale College vs Graeme College; 14:30 St Andrew’s College vs Queens College.

  • Kearsney takes on Hilton for their final fixture and it is set to be a cracker

Kearsney takes on Hilton for their final fixture and it is set to be a cracker

NewsGKearsneyCollegeKearsney College is hosting Hilton for their final fixture of the season this Saturday and they will be looking to end things on a high note. They will find some tough competition in Hilton, though.

Both Kearsney and Hilton players have done a good job of earning spots on the Craven Week and Academy Week teams.

Kearsney College will be represented by two players, namely Siso France and Devahn van der Walt, on the Sharks u18 Craven Week squad.

Hilton has done exceptionally well, with four of their players making it onto the Sharks u18 Craven Week squad. Christopher Horak, Akhona Kunene, Hanu Pieterse and Luke Watt will all be representing Hilton College at Craven Week.

Kearsney also has four players attending Academy Week and Academy Week XV that will take the field on Saturday as part of their first team, these being Anele Cele, Connor McIntyre, Heinrich Fourie and Roydan Madatt.

We have already seen competitive rugby from both schools this season and Saturday will provide nothing less.

The Northwood Knights will be battling it out against Maritzburg College this weekend in what should be quite the spectacle.

Maritzburg College has the highest volume of players taking part in this years Craven Week, testament to their great rugby.

Six members of Maritzburg’s first team will be attending, these players are Aiden Botha, Sasha Kadira, Phiwayinkosi Khubeka, Luyanda Kunene, Elbie Mouton and Kuhle Mthimkulu. Maritzburg will take the field with a top notch squad.

Northwood has earned some great outcomes of their own this season, including their 29-22 defeat over the Green Machine.

Although the number of games may be decreasing, the quality of rugby is not. There will be plenty of rugby action in KZN this Saturday.

    The teams:

Kearsney College: 15 Daniel Eager, 14 Likhona Nunwana, 13 Lindo Mpungose, 12 Siso France, 11 Mfundo Mthethwa, 10 David Pohl, 9 Roydan Madatt, 8 Callum Steer, 7 Salu Mqobongo, 6 James Francke, 5 Heinrich Fourie, 4 Connor McIntyre, 3 Anele Cele, 2 Devahn van der Walt, 1 Luca Veronesi.

Hilton College: 15 Ivan Jjuuko, 14 Rukudzo Madinga, 13 RD Engelbrecht, 12 Ivan Lockem, 11 Michael Capes, 10 Christopher Horak, 9 Luke Watt, 8 Akhona Kunene, 7 Matthew Stewart, 6 Ross Brown, 5 Luke Warren, 4 Hanu Pieterse, 3 Ben le Roux, 2 Murray Brink, 1 Bunono Jabavu.

Pretoria Boys’ High School will look to close out their last match of the second term before the start of the exams, against St John’s College away this weekend.

Comparatively, both teams have not had their best seasons this year so far, but have shown glimpses of promise and will want to end the season on a high note by getting a few wins under the belt.

Kick-off is at 12:00 for the 1st XV’s taking place on Burger Field.

Pretoria Boys have won seven matches and St John’s have won five this season. Last year, when these two sides met St John’s College won the match 27-12, playing in Pretoria on Brooks Field.

The Blues recently beat St Benedict’s College last weekend, winning emphatically away with the scoreline reading 34-22. St Benedict’s led for most of the match before St John’s scored two quick tries in succession to win the match late in the second half.

The hosts have shown earlier in the season that they are not afraid to play a more cautious and defensive style of play. Looking at counterattacking when the right opportunities present themselves through well-executed set-pieces.

Prop Finlay Holden has found himself on the scoresheet a few times this season and will look to add to his number of tries. Another player to keep an eye out for his scrummie Thomas Kruger, who also comes into the match with some form.

Pretoria Boys’ High lost narrowly to Jeppe High School for Boys at home last weekend, where the result ended 22-16. Boys High lost in the final minute and will want to bounce back from a close match, where, arguably, for most of the match, they looked in a good position to win the fixture.

Winger Ntsako Ndlovu put in some big defensive tackles against Jeppe, but will be itching to show off his pace with some tries.

Both sides have needed to replace their flyhalves from last weekend with Keethan Fritz (Pretoria Boys’ High School) and Joe Macrobert (St John’s College) each getting an opportunity to wear their schools’ first XV’s number ten jerseys this weekend.

The Candies have shown some promising plays and will want to put behind them the couple of losses experienced in the last few weeks. Coach Paul Anthony and Assistant Coach Wian Geldenhuys would have ensured that the side put in some hard yards during the training sessions this week.

The teams stack up nicely against each other, which should give both sets of parents and old boys a good opportunity to witness an exciting encounter at one of the more picturesque schoolboy rugby fields around the country.

With St John’s main school building façade, towering over Burger field, it would be intimidating for most away sides.

Enough about school buildings, bring on the rugby!

    The teams:

St John’s College: 15 Bryson Walker, 14 Bradley Chabalala, 13 Reece Watson, 12 Nkosi Sibanda (vice-captain), 11 Jacob Smith, 10 Joe Macrobert, 9 Thomas Kurger, 8 Yannis Patu, 7 Matt MacMaster (captain), 6 Grant Barnes, 5 Thomas Archer, 4 Dominic Kamangu, 3 Vincent Miles, 2 Kyle Watson, 1 Finlay Holden.

Pretoria Boys’ High: 15 Kyle Hezlett, 14 Tebogo Nchabaleng, 13 Christoper Smith, 12 Rickus Wessels, 11 Ntsako Ndlovu, 10 Keethan Fritz, 9 Joshua Naude (vice-captain), 8 Seth Venter, 7 Stephen Adams, 6 Etienne du Preez, 5 Tsephpiso Shikhibana, 4 Randy Muzungu, 3 Ofentse Moeng, 2 Shaun Schurmann (captain) 1 Kitso Mokoena.

    Fixtures:

St John’s College vs Pretoria Boys’ High School

    u14A – 7:45 am (D Rugby Field)

    u15A – 8:45 am (C Rugby Field)

    u16A – 9:45 am (Burger Field)

    u19B – 10:50 am (Burger Field)

    u19A – 12:00 pm (Burger Field)

  • Rondebosch hosting Bishops on Tinkie Heyns this Saturday

Rondebosch hosting Bishops on Tinkie Heyns this Saturday

While most of the action in the Western Province has come to an end for the term, the Southern Suburbs are still at each other over the weekend.

The games can be streamed live on SuperSport SchoolsRegister Now

Rondebosch Boys’ High hosts their old foes, Diocesan College, on the Tinkie Heyns field for what is set to be an exciting matchup, with both teams performing well so far this season.

Both teams are looking for a return to form after going down to the two big Paarl sides last weekend. Bishops lost to Paarl Gimnasium by 45-7 and Rondebosch just came up short 12-7 against Paarl Boys’ High.

That said, both of these teams have been playing really well and will see this as a big test which will play a definite part in determining the success of their respective seasons and take them one step closer to being able to claim the top-dog status in the southern suburbs.

The quality of their play this year is reflected in the Western Province provincial teams’ selections, where both schools have done well to have players included, in spite of the fierce competition for places in the representative teams from the schools from Paarl.

Rondebosch’s big prop, Justin Amos, is included in the Western Province Craven Week side, where he will be playing alongside Hassiem Pead (scrumhalf), Aiden Norris (no. 8) and Gilermo Mentoe (fullback) from Bishops.

The home team’s fullback, David Simon, and winger, Juma Amissi, have been selected for the WP Craven Week XV. Shaywan Blankenberg, Bishops’ flyhalf, has also made that team after playing for the WP Academy side last year.

Before they switch their jerseys for the provincial colours and begin preparing to play together, however, there will be no inch given on Saturday, as they fight it out in Rondebosch for the first of two encounters this year.

These two teams will meet each other again in August, this time on the Piley Rees field, for their second game of the season, so the Rondebosch boys will want to make sure they make the most of the home ground advantage while they have it.

The rivalry between the neighbouring schools has always been strong since they first played each other in 1908 when a Bishops U16 team beat Wynberg U16  112-0.

Since then, however, it has been a much closer contest. Rondebosch won both encounters last year, beating Bishops 43-26 at home and 20-15 on the Diocesan College fields.

SACS is hosting Wynberg Boys’ High for the first of their two fixtures.

Wynberg came out on top in both of their derby games against SACS last year, beating them 40-15 and 16-5.

Both teams have had a difficult run of late and will be desperate to return to winning ways. It could go either way.

Wynberg appears to have the stronger squad though, as they have two players in the Craven Week team and four in the Craven Week XV.

Yaqeen Ahmed (flyhalf) and captain, Xola Nyali (flanker) represent their school in the Western Province Craven Week squad, while Torren February (flanker), Ethan Hendricks (no. 8), Luqobo Makwedini (prop) and Sange Mbutho (scrumhalf) have made the cut for the WP XV.

Makwedini was also part of the Sharks’ Grant Khomo team last year when he was attending Durban High School.

Ikhona Maxegwana (prop) is the only player from SACS to make the WP XV.

The SACS boys will be looking forward to the opportunity to show that they may have been overlooked though, and both teams will want to end the term on a high.

Wynberg are without their fullback, Matthew Ould and flanker, February. Their playmaker winger, Xolela Hoyi, covers fullback and Levi Brown starts at wing, while Da Costa moves to the flank position and Monty Loggenberg gets the start at lock.

February and Hendricks are on the bench for Wynberg.

SACS remain unchanged from the team that lost to Paul Roos (26-7) in Stellenbosch last weekend.

    The teams are:

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs Diocesan College at 12:15

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 David Simon, 14 Juma Amissi, 13 Nicholas Molyneux, 12 Matthew Malherbe, 11 Ethan Gordon, 10 Dylan Miller, 9 Caleb Belelie, 8 Ryan du Rand, 7 Alutha Wesi, 6 Riyadh Isaacs, 5 Tom Barnard, 4 Collin Paul Kemp, 3 Nicolas Swier, 2 Thomas van Wyk, 1 Justin Amos.

Diocesan College: 15 Gilermo Mentoe, 14 Ayanda Bonoyi, 13 Olo Sopotela, 12 Nic Allison, 11 Lucca Mynhardt, 10 Shaywan Blanckenberg, 9 Hassiem Pead, 8 Aidan Norris, 7 Christian Steward, 6 Tapiwa Nkumanda, 5 Alex Smith, 4 CJ Gordon, 3 Nashe Chahwahwa, 2 Merlin Fransman, 1 Richard Horton.

Hilton and Westville approach KZN clashes on a high

The upcoming weekend will see eight KZN schools take to the Astroturf in what will be the last matches for some schools before teams go on a mid-year break.

With that said, it has been a thrilling term of hockey in the province, with some teams pulling off unexpected results while some have lived up to the expectations put upon them at the start of the season.

SuperSport Schools recaps and looks at two schools in action this weekend. One has had a season to savor, while the other team goes into the weekend high in confidence after pulling a surprise win last Saturday.

*Coincidentally, both teams are on the road this weekend*

    Hilton College

Nine players in the U18 KZN Inland hockey team- That is probably the first thing someone reading this article needs to know about Hilton College.

The side will travel to Kearsney College this coming weekend in hopes of continuing in the solid form that has turned them into a force within the country.

Led by Damian Kimfley, a former South African representative himself, the boys in white have played arguably one of the best attractive styles of hockey in the province, up there with DHS (Durban High School).

For their hard work, Kimfley’s Men have seen themselves rise in the schools’ rankings, and they currently sit in fourth position with 11.27 bonus points in the latest updated rankings.

Their five most impressive performances came against Maritzburg Collge, where they beat (4-0) this previous week. They also claimed the scalp of Glenwood, scoring a whopping eight goals while conceding none.

A game that surely built character in the side is the match-up against DHS, where the sides played down to the last chukka, with Hilton finally winning it (4-3).

Attractive, fast, and counter attacking hockey with a massive focus on defence has got the side to where it is today. They will look for the same against a fired-up Kearsney side come Saturday morning.

Players to watch: Akha Mda, Dale Herbert, Jarred Kitto, and Grant Bridgeford.

    Westville Boys High

Westville Boys High is a team that hasn’t been at its best this season but making progress with every match.

A team that is occasionally known and accustomed to bullying fellow KZN sides has been under the stick a couple of times and on the back of receiving some humbling results.

However, with losses comes lessons, and the side has done just that, learn.

According to head coach Cameron Mackay, their most impressive match of the season dates back to the clash versus Kearsney, which was one of the few matches they have played at their new Astroturf this season.

Mackay, despite the topsy turvy season, has managed to produce two U18 KZN players in Owen Slack (CB) and Josh Beck (ST). Those selections are commendable for the side, especially considering that the team lost some crucial players from last year.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Mackay’s side though, as after 18 matches, they find themselves sitting 16th on the rankings, above the likes of Michaelhouse and Glenwood.

This coming weekend, they have a reason to believe they can win.

After defeating one of the best teams in the region, DHS (3-1) on their reunion, Mackay’s side will feel like they have the extra edge on Michaelhouse.

Players to watch: Keaton Burns, Owen Slack, Warwick Field, Kade Burns, and Josh Beck.

    The teams:

Hilton team to travel to Kearsney: Nkosi Shozi, Michael Sara, Grant Bridgeford, Dale Herbert, Nicholas Chantler, Akha Mda, Wian Liebenberg, Joel Kitshoff, Kearabetswe Khoele, Jarred Kitto, Masud Dakile, Jarred Matlby, Tino Hove, Murray Loughor-Clarke, Benjamin Mcguigan.

Westville team to travel to Michaelhouse: Keaton Burns, Connor Jenkins, Daniel Lambert, Owen Slack, James Dent, Sibusiso Cele, Kade Burns, Warwick Field, Caleb van Loenen, Josh Beck, Kaeden Mc Allister, Ty Matthews, Tristan Burns, Nic Ackerman, Curt Rogers, Seth Simpson.

    Fixtures:

    Saturday 10 June:

10:30 – Northwood vs Maritzburg College; 11:15 – Kearsney College vs Hilton College; 11:25 – Michaelhouse vs Westville Boys’ High; 12:30 – St Charles College vs Glenwood.

Paarl Gimnasium t. Oakdale Landbou om 12:30:

Paarl Gimnasium:15 Tazreeq Moerat, 14 Freek de Kock, 13 Hennie Otto, 12 Roland Viviers, 11 Pieter-Nel du Plessis, 10 Kyle Smith, 9 Dawid Kotze, 8 Nicolas Nel, 7 Louw du Toit, 6 Adrúan Kotze, 5 Jan-Lourens du Toit, 4 Eduan Vosloo, 3 Joubert du Toit, 2 Jannie Grobbelaar, 1 Xander Mynhardt.
