    PAARL. – Uiteindelik!

Soms weeg geen nasionale o.18-spelers swaarder as vier SA o.18-spelers.

Grey College weathers Oakdale storm in Bloemfontein

Grey College showed class to weather an inspired Oakdale Landbou attack in Bloemfontein on Saturday, as the top-ranked team in the country stretched their unbeaten season to 15 games with a 36-25 victory.

They will look to end the year with that record intact when they host Paul Roos in their final fixture for the year.

Oakdale showed their intent early on, drawing the first blood with a try by their electric centre, Kurt Coetzee.

It took the home team no time to respond though, as Coetzee’s opposite number, Pieter van der Merwe, broke the line immediately after the kickoff to put Keegan Scholtz in for the first of his two tries to level the score at 7-all.

Despite Oakdale regaining the lead momentarily with a penalty conversion by their trusted flyhalf, Zandre Conradie, Scholtz’s second try gave the Bloemfontein Powerhouse an advantage that they would not lose again in the match.

The visitors’ Craven Week winger, Therlow Prins, scored a hat-trick as they beat HTS Drostdy by 31-24 last weekend, and the exciting young speedster got over the line two more times against Grey.

Both of his tries came from two brilliantly collected kicks forward, with Prins being too quick for any turning defender to catch.

This got Oakdale to within five points, trailing by 29-25 with only 10 minutes left in the game and looking like they might score at any moment.

The Grey boys are simply too well drilled to succumb to the pressure, and they stuck to their guns, with their dynamic flanker, Jean-Henri Smit, who has been phenomenal all season, securing the win with a try in the final moments leaving Oakdale as just another team who still search for the elusive win against the Bloemfontein Juggernaut.

Oakdale managed to hold Grey to a 17-all draw in Riversdal last year, and it will be back to the drawing board for the team from the South West before they get another chance when they host Grey College next year.

Before that, they still have the all-important derby against Boland Landbou to attend to. Boland is experiencing a strong run of form and has recently beaten Paul Roos (28-12) and Paarl Boys’ High (26-22).

If Oakdale can repeat this weekend’s intensity though, they can beat anyone.

Grey face Paul Roos next on the 19th, without their contingent of SA Schools players, still, it’s hard to see anyone beating the pacesetters, but history has shown that a derby is not decided by form or statistics. It’s sure to be another battle to remember.

This was the last outing in a Grey College jersey for Jean Erasmus (prop), JJ Theron (eighth man), Christiaan van der Westhuizen (scrumhalf), Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) and Ranon Fouché (prop) who are part of the SA Schools team as well as the centre pairing of Van der Merwe and Benito Goeda who have also been selected for the SA A team this year.

  • Wit Bulle outshine Candies in point-scoring bonanza

Wit Bulle outshine Candies in point-scoring bonanza

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard

The Wit Bulle showed their dominance on the field, overpowering Boys High, as they are affectionately called, with a final score of 76-24.

The match witnessed a historic moment as Affies managed to score over 70 points against their long-standing rivals for the first time in their illustrious history.

In a thrilling display of rugby prowess, the highly anticipated derby fixture between Affies and Pretoria Boys’ High School lived up to its reputation, culminating in a resounding victory for the Wit Bulle, the sixth occasion in the last 10 years which has seen the school cross 50 points in this fixture.

Rewatch all the action on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

The first half set the tone for the entire encounter, with Affies coming out all guns blazing. Displaying exceptional teamwork and coordination, they managed to score four impressive tries, two of which were secured by the skilful hooker FC van Rooyen.

However, amidst the excitement, both teams faced disciplinary issues and picked up yellow cards for various indiscretions. This ultimately added an element of intensity to the contest with Boys High Marcel De Beer, and Affies’ Ruan Lippold and FC van Rooyen, all finding themselves in the sinbin.

Boys High pressed hard in the dying minutes of the first half trying to find a gap in the reduced defenses of the Wit Bulle.

Nonetheless, at halftime, Affies held a commanding lead of 22-3.

The game took a dramatic turn in the second half, as Affies reduced to 13-men due to the yellow cards. Surprisingly, this setback seemed to ignite a spark in the Wit Bulle’s offense, leading to an awe-inspiring spectacle.

Within the space of five minutes, they unleashed a barrage of three tries which were all converted by flyhalf Ruan Pienaar, effectively distancing themselves from their rivals and solidifying their grip on the game,

One of the standout moments of the match came from Affies’ fullback, Miguel De Lange, whose breathtaking speed saw him make a remarkable 100-meter dash to score a sensational try. It was a moment of brilliance that would have made Usain Bolt proud.

The Affies scrumhalf Hendre Schoeman had an exceptional day on the field, bagging a hat-trick of tries and showcasing feistiness throughout the match.

Captain Shaun Schürmann put in a big performance for his side, leading from the front as he tried to rally his troops opening up the account for Boys High and picking up the first try for his side.

In the face of a relentless onslaught from Affies, Pretoria Boys’ High School refused to back down. They made a valiant effort in the second half, managing to score a further two tries, with Ntsako Ndlovu and prop Ofentse Moeng each leaving their mark on the scoreboard.

However, their late surge was not enough to overcome the point deficit created by Affies’ phenomenal performance.

In the end, it was a tough day for the Boys High team from across the railway, as they were outplayed by their rivals in a scoring frenzy, particularly in those crucial five minutes during the second half, which made a significant difference. Had roles been reversed and Pretoria Boys’ High School taken advantage with the additional players on the field it could have potentially been a different story.

As the dust settles on this high-scoring spectacle, both teams will undoubtedly take away valuable lessons and experiences from the match, spurring them on to further excel in their future encounters. Affies will be happy with this performance as many of the boys are currently in grade 11 and will return next year.

Rugby enthusiast will relish the memory of this enthralling showdown between two formidable opponents on the field. The Wit Bulle leaving their mark on the history of this derby fixture with a resounding victory and extending their winning streak against their neighbours.

Paarl Gim on top in biggest interschools in the world

PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA – AUGUST 05: Daniel Van Der Merwe of Paarl Boys High School during the Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools rugby match between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys High School at Faure Street Stadium on August 05, 2023 in Paarl, South Africa. (Photo by Petri Oeschger/Gallo Images)

A tale of two halves ends in ecstasy for Paarl Gimnasium as they beat bitter rivals Paarl Boys’ High by 20 points to 17 at Faure Stadium in a Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools clash on Saturday

A high-intensity start from Paarl Boys’ High was met with great resilience from the hosts early on. The opening 16 minutes of the half were well contested by both teams. The hosts, however, were the first to draw blood after a well-worked move from a lineout just outside the 22-metre line of Boishaai.

A sniping break by flyhalf and captain Kyle Smith was well supported by his halfback partner, Dawid Kotze, who dived over for his team’s first try. The conversion by Smith was successful. Paarl Gim led 7-0 with 18 minutes played.

Paarl Gim continued on the front foot after their opening try. With Gim on the attack, Boishaai infringed at the breakdown, which gave Paarl Gim pivot Smith a chance to kick for goal. His penalty attempt was a good one from 35 metres out. Paarl Gim had all the momentum late in the half, extending their lead to 10 points to nil with 30 minutes played.

Kyle Smith didn’t have to wait long to get his second penalty attempt at goal as he drove Boishaai back into their half with a well-educated boot.

Boishaai eigththman Divan Fuller carried hard into contact deep in his own 22-metre area but was adjudged to have led into contact with his forearm. Kyle Smith pointed to the posts and calmly stepped up to slot his second penalty of the afternoon. Paarl Gim went into halftime with a 13-0 lead over their neighbours. Paarl Boys’ will have to fight hard to get back into the game in the second half.

Paarl Gim continued where they left off in the first half. Kyle Smith’s educated boot kept driving Boishaai back into their half and forcing them to play from deep. Paarl Gim drove home their constant pressure, which eventually paid dividends with 44 minutes played.

A third wave of attack broke the Boishaai defence as Paarl Gim outside centre Hennie Otto powered his way over for the second try of the afternoon. Smith kept his 100% record intact with another successful conversion. Paarl Gim led by 20 points to nil.

You can’t count this Paarl Boys’ High team out, even when they’re 20 points down. Boishaai finally found the direct running rugby that could get them back into the game. It was playmaker and fullback JC Mars who took matters into his own hands with a clean break inside Paarl Gim’s half and dived over in the corner. Inside Centre Daniel van der Merwe was unsuccessful with the conversion from against the touch line. Paarl Boys’ High 5-20 Paarl Gim, with 25 minutes left in the game.

Paarl Boys’ High seemed to have found their rhythm after their opening score as momentum swung their way. A forward dominated phase of pressure resulted in eighth man Divan Fuller rumbling through Paarl Gim defence and scoring next to the uprights. Van Der Merwe‘s conversion was successful. Paarl Boys’ High right back in the contest with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Paarl Boys’ High 12-20 Paarl Gim.

With tensions running high and adrenaline flowing through Boishaai viens, they continued to build pressure on Paarl Gim. Boishaai left winger Jameel De Jongh showed his class and excellent finishing ability to score his teams third try. Van Der Merwe’s conversion from the touch line was unsuccessful. Paarl Boys’ High 17-20 Paarl Gim.

The comeback was not to be for Boishaai as Paarl Gim won a penalty with time up on the clock and Kyle Smith stepped up to try and convert the penalty. His kick was unsuccessful but his team had done enough to hold onto the victory and write their names into the history books of this famous interschools rugby derby. Paarl Gim walk away victors 20 points to 17.

Middelburg shock Transvalia, Zwartkop victorious against Klerksdorp

NewsGMiddelburg1Hoërskool Middelburg managed to shock Transvalia beating them 39-20 in their SDC Noordvaal Cup Plate-clash on Saturday.

The Middelburg men made good use of their home ground advantage as they put the visitors under pressure from the get-go. The home side kept their composure and managed to stay structured it a game that seemed to be getting bit loose.

As expected, it came down to which pack could gain the upper hand. The foundation was laid by the Middies big men upfront who asserted their dominance early on which meant that the dangerous backline could get on the front foot to exploit an of the boil Transvalia defence.

Fumani Chauke led the charge with another very impressive performance, announcing his physical presence in the trenches and with ball in hand. Chauke also crossed the whitewash to score a well-deserved try for the home side.

Transvalia struggled to keep up with the tempo ass it became clear that the extensive traveling in the last couple of weeks started to take its toll. With poor discipline creeping in it gave the Middies the opening they needed to seal the deal and claim a very important victory in term of their contention for a playoff spot.

Although, Transvalia’s good performances thus far means that they will most certainly feature among the top four in the division to battle it out for a place in the final.

Zwartkop claimed an impressive victory away from home, beating Klerksdorp by 27-23 with a brilliant effort from the points machine, Danilson Metcalfe, who broke through the defences to score a match winner in the last minute.

Zwarries have built up some good momentum over the last couple of weeks and a victory against Klerksdorp in Klerskdorp will definitely have their spirits high heading into their last pool fixture next week.

Klerskdorp showed some real promising signs with a good performance dominating the scrums with front rower Luam Pretorius standing out. Having struggled throughout most of the season it seemed like they hit their straps and will look forward to ending on a high as they still search for their first victory of the campaign.
