FNB Classic Clashes: Witteberg vs Voortrekker – aksie is gewaarborg

Trekkertrots.”

    Ontmoet Witteberg se eerste netbalspan:

Agter – Querida Ackeer, Leozé Lottering, Jane de Villiers, Zinathi Matshotyana, Katleho Mokhina

Voor – Ziané Lottering (onderkaptein), Sharmell Nkomo (kaptein)

    Ontmoet Voortrekker se eerste netbalspan:

  • Kingswood College look to give their all against in-form Pearson side

Kingswood College look to give their all against in-form Pearson side

Kingswood College girls coach Zimasa Dunywa says her side will look to give their all and put away every opportunity when they visit Gqeberha’s Pearson High School in what sets to be a highly entertaining match this coming weekend.

The side, under Dunywa, has had a positive start to the 2023 campaign after finishing eighth out of 32 teams in the Fairmont Easter Tournament.

They also topped that off by defeating the likes of Durbanville, Bellville, and Outeniqua before hosting their successful co-ed festival, which saw them win four out of six matches.

The experienced coach, who once dawned the green and gold colours, joined the college early this year after a five-year stint at Collegiate Girls’ High.

Speaking at length to SuperSport Schools ahead of their encounter on Saturday, Dunywa revealed how she has adapted to her role while also getting to know her side better.

“I joined Kingswood this year, and personally, it took some adjustment for me to get to know the girls,” she said.

“I take pride in understanding my team, seeing what works for them, and making combinations—seeing the field work and bonding off the field.”

“We have a very capable team—a strong team, I must say—led by Araya Boettiger (captain) and Amy Hobson (vice-captain), who are very influential at the school.”

Dunywa, coming into the team, has had to assert a new style of play and mentality among the girls. She admits, however, that her girls have fully embraced the challenge and have aligned with the goals set in motion.

“My coaching style is one of playing with the best because that’s how we’ll get better,” revealed Dunywa.

“I have a very strong group in all aspects, mentally and physically.” “The girls are always up for it, and we’re always punching above our weight.”

“I love how they always look forward to playing the best and most respected teams because, honestly, those are the games we want to play and train hard for.”

Deemed South Africa’s leading independent, co-educational school, the Makhanda-based school will face arguably its toughest fixture so far this year, in Pearson.

The Gqeberha side has been phenomenal this year, carrying on with last year’s momentum, which saw them finish the year ranked 10th in the country.

Not giving away too much, Dunywa had this to say when asked what it would take to beat the home side in their reunion celebration:

“To say we’re excited would be an understatement,” she opened.

“We see ourselves as a threatening team, and we rattle teams when we move the ball, and I want us to do that throughout our game against Pearson.”

“It’s going to take a lot of grit when talent doesn’t pitch up anymore; we’re going to need hard work.” We need to switch on for all four quarters and put up every opportunity we get; ultimately, we’ll go out there and give it our all,” she concluded.

Kick-off is at 13:00 between the two teams on the Pearson Astro.

Other matches to keep an eye on include the clash between Stirling High School and Union. Cambridge High will take on Grens while Hudson Park battle Merrifield.

Clarendon Girls are expected to have a field day against Port Rex THS, while Gqeberha’s Westville face Victoria Park and Woodridge take on York High.

In King Williams Town, Kingsridge High School for Girls welcome Queenstown Girls’ High School.

    The teams:

Kingswood College: Sthando Mandlendoda, Isabella Oertel, Olivia Connellan, Joanna Du Toit, Araya Boettiger (c), Lilly Winstanley, Keagan Lottering, Jasmine Witthuhn, Amy Hobson (vc), Devon Heyns, Ophola Bulani, Matipa Karimazondo, Amy Wilson, Emily Van Niekerk, Ella Stone.

Pearson: Jayde O’Halloran, Nuriyah Bell, Jorja Andrews (vc), Jodi Wilson, Cara Nel (c), Kaylin Roberts, Isabelle Hofmeyr, Devon Moore, Annemi De Villiers, Nina Ferreira, Zanike Coetzer, Jody van Aardt, Zoey Mostert, Nyssa Slabbert.

SACS: The Storm in the Cape of Good Hope

The Western Cape Southern Suburbs are about to be filled with the sound of mighty chanting. This weekend SACS takes on Rondebosch Boys’ High in a Cape Town Derby that will assuredly be a spectacle of fantastic hockey.

SACS, under the tutelage of James Peverley (ex-Grand Challenge men’s 1st team coach) have thus far had immense success, only losing one to Paul Roos Gymnasium and drawing one to Selborne, both during the Hibbert Shield.

With SACS’s ability to adapt their game plan according to their opponent’s each time, while maintaining their core strengths of pocket-picking and shifting the ball up the wings, SACS has proven themselves as an effective, well-coordinated machine to be reckoned with.

The 19A team facing Rondebosch Boys’ High this weekend includes:

    1 Rogan Stirk (GK)

    2 Luke Salters (DEF)

    4 Mike Cowen (C) (DEF)

    5 Litha Kraai (FWD)

    6 Mikey Royden Turner (MID)

    7 Josh Opperman (MID)

    8 Ozair Pillai (vC) (MID)

    9 Dean Carrick (FWD)

    10 Liam Haupt (MID)

    11 Ray Bonnet (FWD)

    13 Cole Allam (MID)

    14 Steph Meyer (DEF)

    15 Rowan Davis (FWD)

  • Wie gaan baas wees in Bethlehem vir 2023?

Wie gaan baas wees in Bethlehem vir 2023?

    FOTO: Willie Kruger Fotografie

    Witteberg t. Voortrekker om 14:00:

Witteberg: 15 Ashton Diedericks, 14 Sydwell Sethi, 13 Janus Breytenbach, 12 Kenoyen Morat, 11 Xavier Lotter, 10 Curtley Smith, 9 Dries Stemmett, 8 Daniel Meintjies, 7 Marco Grobler, 6 Llewellyn Beukes, 5 Nico van Rensburg, 4 Pieter Nel, 3 Bongi Mbambo, 2 Kobus Hefer, 1 Gerhardt Stone.

Bethlehem Voortrekker: 15 Kaneng Komane, 14 Hein Smit, 13 Tumi Khoza, 12 Frederik Fourie, 11 Kamohelo Moses, 10 Tiaan van Rooyen, 9 Alexander Maree, 8 Archie Gertenbach, 7 Juan Duminy, 6 Jayden de Jesus, 5 Harry Kymdell, 4 Alberto Argentino, 3 Cecil Parsons, 2 Arnold Ras, 1 Francois Maree.

    Ander bepalings, (tuisspanne eerste):

    11 Mei 2023

    16:10 – Ficksburg t. Marquard; 16:00 – Ladybrand t. New Horizon College.

    12 Mei 2023

    14:15 – Harrismith t. Ntsu;

    13 Mei 2023

    10:30 – Vrede t. Reitz; 13:00 – Zastron t. President Steyn.

  • RESA Academy still going strong after 25 years

RESA Academy still going strong after 25 years

For more than 25 years, Remember Elites Sports Academy (RESA) has been producing elite footballers in South Africa.

You can go as far as the late 90s, Remember Elites Sports Academy formerly known as the Remember Football Club has been producing gems of footballers and writing its name in the history books of South African Football Development.

In 1997, they made history by becoming the first team to win the Nike Premier Cup in South Africa. In 1998 they won it again and went to represent South Africa in France, in the same year France hosted the World Cup. In 1999 for the 3rd consecutive time, RESA won the Nike Premier Cup and went to represent SA in Spain.

Even though the academy has gone through enormous struggles over the years from financial constraints, with their transport system; functioning under inadequate structures they have remained as one of the best academies in SA.

The likes of Calvin Kadi who last played for Bidvest Wits, Nhlanhla Shabalala, General Secretary of SAFA all came through the ranks of the RESA (Academy). The list is endless: Thabang Monare, Orlando Pirates Midfielder, Mduduzi ‘Mdu’ Mdantsane, attacking player for Cape Town City, Sphiwe Mahlangu, TS Galaxy player, Lwandile Mabuya, Richards Bay FC and many more who have the fortune to played professional football, locally and overseas came through the ranks of RESA (academy).

In its first year of participation in the Gauteng Development League, RESA finished 3rd on B-Stream while in 2nd  year they won it top convincingly with 30 points difference.

Looking at the depth of the current squad, Xolani Mathumbo said that they are proud of the players they have who continue to fight for the academy at their best will. Last season they had one of their u17 boys called up to the AC Milan technical centre. “The academy has been fortunate to move players and that is one of the things we take pride in as RESA family, currently we do have a boy that is being under the assessment of Mamelodi Sundowns and we can only wish the best for the boy”

The academy also became the first to partner with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to sustain the facilities and encourage the development of football in the region.

The academy continues its growth with its main goal to offer the best sports programmes to young, talented sportsmen and women in and around the Gauteng region.

  • Dale College soccer boys are growing from strength to strength

Dale College soccer boys are growing from strength to strength

Despite a poor performance by the team at the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament, Tevin Klaasen says he is proud of his boys concerning how far the team has come. “It was definitely not the kind of performance we were looking for, losing all games.

However we are honoured to participate in big tournaments such as the Wildeklawer sporting event and to play against the top schools in the country” Tevin said.

Dale College sits on the 6th of the Buffalo City High Schools League, 9 points behind Stutterheim High School who are the current log leaders.

“In order to grow from strength to strength, our team has made it a point that we participate in several tournaments. This will allow our young boys to learn from other teams and to also learn from themselves.

We are challenging them to leave their comfort zone and play out against the best teams; if we want to be one of the best schools not just in the province we need to get used to playing out the very top schools out there”.

Tevin Klaasen from Dale College is an enthusiast soccer fan, league coordinator of the Buffalo City High Schools League  and director of soccer at Dale College.

Discipline goes a long way, starting at home, at school and in the classrooms. “How you behave and conduct yourself with and without others around is very important”, he said. That is one of their core values that our players are brought up to as they put on the Dale jersey.

Challenges are part of the game and Dale College is facing one of many challenges when it comes to forming a formidable team to compete at the highest level.

Most of the soccer players at the school are not exposed to the sport and they only get to start playing at a much older age. Tevin says this is a lot of work for the technical team as they need to have a certain temperament working with the players at the school.

To overcome this challenge, Dale College is now looking to establish a strong relationship with primary schools to introduce soccer at a young age so that by the time they get to high school, they know how to play the game.

Despite these challenges, Dale College have a star in the making to boast with; Aqhama Mqongwana who is a former Dale College boy, is now playing for TS Galaxy Reserve Team.

Tevin said this has been inspiring for the team at Dale College and to the young boys at the school as they hope and dream to play either varsity football or go to the professionals.

  • SACS silences Bishops on home soil

SACS silences Bishops on home soil

    PHOTO: SACS Hockey Facebook Page

Two goals in the fourth quarter by Litha Kraai and Stephen Meyer secured a hard-fought 3-0 victory for SACS against noisy neighbors, Bishops Diocesan College, at the Woodlands hockey astroturf on Friday night.

Despite going into the game as favorites, SACS was weary of their opposition, who hadn’t played in two weeks while they returned from a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat against Paul Roos in the final of the Hibbert Shield Hockey Festival.

The match started with a high tempo, as the visitor asked questions of the Bishops’ defense in the early exchanges. As early as the seventh minute, Zac Heyns, the Bishops goalkeeper, had to make a stunning save to stop a shot from Josh Opperman.

The visitors remained resolute in attack, however, and with the first quarter running out, they finally opened the scoring through Opperman, who received the ball from Kraai and pounced to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.

The second and third chukkers failed to live up to expectations, as both sides couldn’t breach their respective defences despite Heyns making more saves to keep his side in the game.

Heyns’ fortunes would, unfortunately, run out in the fourth chukker as Bishops came in looking more fatigued.

SACS’s “highball pace” game plan started to pay off as the home side started making sloppy mistakes and giving away possession along with unnecessary penalty corners.

That allowed 16-year-old Kraai to capitalize, scoring a thunderbolt from a penalty corner with eight minutes remaining in the match. Meyer soon added to SAC’s tally when the side traveled the length of the pitch to tap in his side’s third, adding no doubt and taking the game away from the hosts.

Reflecting on the match, SACS head coach Pierre Le Roux expressed how impressed he was with his side’s ability to keep possession throughout the game, despite an impressive defensive showing by the hosts.

“We had most of the possession and most of the territory, but they defended well,” Le Roux told Super Sport Schools after the match.

“They blocked us on all our channels and made it hard for us to go on the counterattack.”

“They’ve got some great players; James Greeves caught us a couple of times, but I think the main thing was that we just kept pushing the ball forward and creating chances.”

Known for scoring goals galore, SACS only managed one goal in the first quarter, scoring the last two in the final stages of the match. Le Roux admitted, however, that he wasn’t too worried about conceding but rather wanted his team to counter Bishops and add to their tally.

“We spent a lot of time in their half, so whenever they got the ball, it would take them a long time to get to our circle.”

“As a coach, you’re always nervous that they’ll get there, but we were more concerned about how we were trying to get a goal.”

“The first goal was like a manufactured goal; we just worked it out, but our drag flicker (Kraai) scored an unbelievable goal, and the last goal we had Steph Meyer run in; he’s an in-door player, and he just flicked it in—those are the kind of goals you need when players can make a difference when you need them,” concluded Le Roux.

In other matches featuring Western Cape teams, Paul Roos continued their impressive form by defeating Paarl Gimnasium (2-0), whereas Paarl Boys High went down (2-1) against Parel Vallei.

Hoerskool Durbanville was also among the big winners, thumping HTS Drostyd (6-1), while Wynberg Boys High succumbed to a 5-1 humdinger against Gqeberha’s Grey High, and Rondebosch beat DF Malan (score), while Curro Durbanville edged out Stellenberg (3-0).

    Scorers:

SACS 3 (Josh Opperman, Litha Kraai, Stephen Meyer). Bishops 0

    Other results:

Durbanville 6, HTS Drostdy 1; Paul Roos 2, Paarl Gimnasium 0; DF Malan 2, Rondebosch Boys’ High 0; Parel Vallei 2, Paarl Boys’ High 1; Curro Durbanville 3, Stellenberg 0.
