Greypellier – oh wait sorry Montpellier defeated Brive on Sunday at home in the GGL Stadium – Complexe Yves du Manoir with no less than five old boys from South Africa’s famous rugby factory, Grey College of Bloemfontein.
Montpellier won the Top 14 Orange encounter comfortably by 30 points to 6.
Three Greyt players – Cobus Reinach (scrumhalf), Jan Serfontein (inside centre), and Johan Goosen (outside centre) were in the starting line-up, while Bismarck du Plessis (hooker) and Henry Immelman (utility back) made appearances from the bench.
Reinach set up two tries in the victory, of which Serfontein who was also on fire provided the finish one of these tries. Du Plessis made an appearance from the bench, but Immelman was replaced on the bench before the match.
Reinach scored a brace of tries a week earlier in his side’s victory over Agen.
This was also Goosen’s first match since February. Nico Janse van Rensburg, alumni of Affies, also started at lock for Montpellier.
Montpellier invested in Grey College’s rugby through the Badawi Legacy Trust since 2017 after the owner of the French club, Mohed Altrad, was impressed by the demeanor of the players from the school who played for his club.
Springboks and Old Greys, Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar, who currently plays for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, also earlier plied their trade at Montpellier. Bismarck’s Springbok brother, Jannie du Plessis, also played for the French club before moving to the Lions in Johannesburg.
In the other matches of Round 6 of the French Top 14, there were also a couple of South Africans playing their part.
La Rochelle has three Saffas in their midst as they defeated Bordeaux-Begles by 20 to 6. Wian Liebenberg (HTS Drostdy – flanker) and wingers Raymond Rhule (Louis Botha) and Dillyn Leyds (Diocesan College) were all in the starting line-up.
For the Bordeaux-Begles Jandré Marais (Welkom Gimnasium) was in their starting line-up. He has been playing for them since 2013.
Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth (Hoërskool Tygerberg) helped Toulon to a 19-16 victory over Castres.
Tristan Tedder (Kearsney College) converted Toulouse’s only try as they suffered a 7-16 defeat at the hands of Lyon on their home turf. Tedder played fullback for the home team.
Another player from Bloemfontein Jeremy Jordaan (Hoërskool Fichardtpark) made an appearance off the bench for Agen in their 15-26 defeat against Bayonne. Jordaan started the previous round against Montpellier.
In Bayonne’s side, another player who knows the City of Roses well – Namibian hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld (HF Verwoerd) also made an appearance from the bench. Van Jaarsveld captained the Cheetahs’ Currie Cup side earlier in his career.
