Montpellier secure Greyt victory over Brive in French Top 14

MontpellierTeamBriveGreypellier – oh wait sorry Montpellier defeated Brive on Sunday at home in the GGL Stadium – Complexe Yves du Manoir with no less than five old boys from South Africa’s famous rugby factory, Grey College of Bloemfontein.

Montpellier won the Top 14 Orange encounter comfortably by 30 points to 6.

Three Greyt players – Cobus Reinach (scrumhalf), Jan Serfontein (inside centre), and Johan Goosen (outside centre) were in the starting line-up, while Bismarck du Plessis (hooker) and Henry Immelman (utility back) made appearances from the bench.

Reinach set up two tries in the victory, of which Serfontein who was also on fire provided the finish one of these tries. Du Plessis made an appearance from the bench, but Immelman was replaced on the bench before the match.

Reinach scored a brace of tries a week earlier in his side’s victory over Agen.

This was also Goosen’s first match since February. Nico Janse van Rensburg, alumni of Affies, also started at lock for Montpellier.

Montpellier invested in Grey College’s rugby through the Badawi Legacy Trust since 2017 after the owner of the French club, Mohed Altrad, was impressed by the demeanor of the players from the school who played for his club.

Springboks and Old Greys, Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar, who currently plays for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, also earlier plied their trade at Montpellier. Bismarck’s Springbok brother, Jannie du Plessis, also played for the French club before moving to the Lions in Johannesburg.

In the other matches of Round 6 of the French Top 14, there were also a couple of South Africans playing their part.

La Rochelle has three Saffas in their midst as they defeated Bordeaux-Begles by 20 to 6. Wian Liebenberg (HTS Drostdy – flanker) and wingers Raymond Rhule (Louis Botha) and Dillyn Leyds (Diocesan College) were all in the starting line-up.

For the Bordeaux-Begles Jandré Marais (Welkom Gimnasium) was in their starting line-up. He has been playing for them since 2013.

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth (Hoërskool Tygerberg) helped Toulon to a 19-16 victory over Castres.

Tristan Tedder (Kearsney College) converted Toulouse’s only try as they suffered a 7-16 defeat at the hands of Lyon on their home turf. Tedder played fullback for the home team.

Another player from Bloemfontein Jeremy Jordaan (Hoërskool Fichardtpark) made an appearance off the bench for Agen in their 15-26 defeat against Bayonne. Jordaan started the previous round against Montpellier.

In Bayonne’s side, another player who knows the City of Roses well – Namibian hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld (HF Verwoerd) also made an appearance from the bench. Van Jaarsveld captained the Cheetahs’ Currie Cup side earlier in his career.

In 1985 is Mnr.

  • Heinke back to carrying the bricks for Gerber as his assistant-coach

Heinke back to carrying the bricks for Gerber as his assistant-coach

HeinkevdMerweGlenwood High School has appointed former Springbok prop Heinke van der Merwe as the assistant coach at their u16 team from next year and the head coach of the team, Reinhard Gerber, is also an old-boy from Monument in Krugersdorp. Monnas as fast become a breeding ground for high-quality coaches.

Interesting is the fact that Van der Merwe was Gerber’s junior in high school and carried his schoolbag to school when the former was in Grade 8. Once again Gerber will be looking to guide Van der Merwe as he tries to find his feet in this new role.

“I used to put bricks in my schoolbag, it might be the reason why he is so strong today,” quipped Gerber.

Van der Merwe will also help the other age-group teams from Glenwood’s props with their development. Gerber played an amazing 76 times for the Wit Bulle of Monnas. After school, he represented the Leopards, Golden Lions, and the Border Bulldogs at first-class level.

Gerber coached Stirling High School’s first XV back in 2007 to make his debut as first-team schools’ rugby coach. He also coached this team between 2011 and 2017 before moving to Glenwood as Director of Sport.

Gerber was the assistant coach for Glenwood’s Green Machine this year before the Coronavirus pandemic brought an end to the season.

Monument who will be celebrating its centenary next year, which will include an international rugby tournament, have quite a couple of former old-boys plying their trade as coaches within the South African schoolboy rugby scene.

Monnas themselves announced recently that Werner van den Berg will coach the pack of forwards of the Wit Bulle. He himself played 84 matches for the schools’ first team. He was previously coaching the schools’ u16-side with huge success.

Even the team doctor of Monnas, Dr. Jano de Beer, has been in his position for 275 matches and also played in 42 matches for the Wit Bulle during his school career.

Stefan “Botter” Lourens is the Director of Rugby down the road in Krugersdorp at Noordheuwel. Lourens started his First XV coaching career alongside Monnas’ legendary rugby coach Hans Coetzee. The latter was also involved at Noordheuwel and Witteberg from Bethlehem last year before making a move to the Western Cape to become Hoërskool Durbanville‘s Director of Rugby.

Lourens also coached Hoërskool Florida, St Andrew’s College, and St John’s College First XV’s in his coaching career. Last year he was the defence coach of Menlopark‘s First XV who made history by becoming the champions of the Virsekerbeker (formerly Administrators Cup, Beeld Trophy) for the first time.

Lourens also raked in former Springbok and Monnas alumni Jaque Fourie to help out as a consultant at Noordheuwel for 2020. Corneel van Dyk who is the head coach of Die Anker in Brakpan is also an old-boy of Monument.

Another former old-boy from Monument as well as a former Springbok and World Cup Winner, Brendan Venter, also made a name for himself as a coach in international circles. Venter coached London Irish, Saracens, and the Sharks while also helping out in various coaching positions in the Italian as well as South African coaching teams during his coaching career.

  • Niemand en Van Vreden lê tuig by Noordvaal-skolevereniging neer

Niemand en Van Vreden lê tuig by Noordvaal-skolevereniging neer

Show support to your school or community by voting them to the next round. The competition will take nine-week in total and your school will need your support for eight of the week if they are going to be crowned the first virtual champions of South Africa.

White was natuurlik vroeër vanjaar voor sy aanstelling by die Ligbloues as konsultant by HTS Drostdy se rugby betrokke.

Noord: Ben Vorster, Hoërskool Middelburg, Marais Viljoen, Secunda, Transvalia, Lichtenburg, Klerksdorp.

Suid: HTS Drostdy, Tygerberg, Fairmont, New Orleans, HTS Daniël Pienaar, Worcester Gimnasium, Kearsney College, Brackenfell.
