  • The Greyt Bash 2019 – Where Tradition meets Innovation

NewsGGreytBashThe annual XHealth Greyt Bash was held this past weekend down in Bloemfontein at the prestigious Grey College. The annual event is in its 4th edition and was founded in 2016.

The internal tournament took place this past weekend on the 30th and 31st August 2019.

DigiTV Streamers were looking to defend their title.

The top of group A played the second placed team of group B and visa versa in what is a semi-final. The final is played between the two winners of the semi-final round and is played on the Johan Volsteedt Cricket Oval.

DigiTV covered two of the fields during the weekend and all games can be caught up on the Grey College TV channel. A newly introduced trophy the Garnet Stevens Fair Play Trophy which was won by the Tyre Mart Titans and their broadcasting team who live streamed most of the matches.

Grey College has had its fair share of ex-Proteas having come through the ranks at the school such as former Proteas captain Hansie Cronje, opening batsmen Boeta Dippenaar as well as former Proteas bowler Victor Mpitsang.

The format been played has taken aspects of the traditional game and modernised it to make the game more exciting, more explosive and takes a lot quicker to finish. With the newly announced franchise competition The Hundred set to take place in the United Kingdom from 2020, it seems as if Grey College may have gotten onto the bandwagon at the right time.

How the Greyt Bash compares to the rules implemented in The Hundred will be one which generates great interest amongst the schoolboys taking part?

The rules are slightly different to traditional limited over rules and are made up of some of the following new ones. Teams have 60 minutes to finish their allotted overs of a 100-ball innings which consists of 15 normal 6-ball overs and one single 10-ball over. An innings is broken up into two double innings contests of 8 overs each.

The first five overs of the innings comprise of the normal field restriction. Teams will bowl all overs from the Northern side of the ground before swapping over. The most exciting part of the new format is the introduction of the single 10-ball over which the batting team needs to take between the Powerplay and the 13th over.

During the over both batsmen can be dismissed on the same ball effectively meaning a player can be caught and the non-striker can be run-out.

The tournament looks to give players of different age groups the opportunity to test their skills against older and more experienced players. This can only have a positive outcome on the depth of Grey’s cricket teams. The players enjoy the new format and forms part of their pre-season campaign prior to the other formats starting.

The opportunity to play with coloured clothing and white balls adds to the excitement of the tournament. Teams are selected during an auction evening where corporate sponsors buy the naming rights for the team.

With this added backing from local businesses this tournament starts to feel like one of the new franchise based T20 tournament’s which is taking the cricket world by storm. Adri Swanepoel, the director of cricket at Grey College had the following to say about the tournament, “The good relationships we build with our sponsors, is our recipe for success.”

  • The St David’s Festival is here to declare the cricket season open

The St David’s Festival is here to declare the cricket season open

StDavidsMaristSt David’s Marist Inanda is the venue for a season-opening feast of two day time cricket

The Fasken St David’s Time Cricket Festival is the traditional schools cricket season-opener in Gauteng and this year’s event – running from Thursday September 5 to Sunday September 8 – has been extended to feature 12 of the country’s top cricketing schools.

Five of the top Joburg school will be there and they will be joined by Paul Roos Gimnasium from Stellenbosch, St Alban’s College from Pretoria, St Andrew’s School of Bloemfontein and two teams from KwaZulu-Natal: Clifton College and Maritzburg College. The 12th team is a Cricket South Africa Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP) XI.

The St David’s Festival began life as a T20 competition, but it was changed to a time cricket format in 2017 when the school’s director of cricket, Dave Nosworthy, arrived.

Nosworthy, who has coached cricket at the highest levels, insists that the best cricketing lessons are taught to players in longer formats of the game.

“Twenty over cricket has its place, but it should definitely not be a pre-season activity,” Nosworthy said. “At this time of the year players should be building fitness and resilience. Batsmen and bowlers need to build confidence in their shots and bowling actions, and captains should be given the opportunity to learn when to declare.”

T20 cricket is too short to allow those things to happen, Nosworthy said.” You have to spend way more time out there than a T20 game allows.”

“Our schoolboy captains cannot become tactically astute if they are not exposed to situations in which they have to make decisions,” Nosworthy said, “and those situations only present themselves in longer formats of the game.”

The Fasken St David’s Time Cricket Festival is used by Cricket South Africa (CSA) to give up-and-coming payers who do not get these sorts of opportunities a chance to match themselves against top opposition. For the second time this year they will be sending a TAP team to St David’s.

Niels Momberg, CSA’s manager of youth cricket said they are delighted to get the opportunity to expose some of their rising stars to “proper” cricket. The players come from their provincial high performance programmes and are at schools who do not attend festivals like the St David’s event, or the Michaelmas Week in Pietermaritzburg in October.

The Fasken St David’s Time Cricket Cricket Festival takes place from September 5th to 8th. The schools will play two two-day matches, which will feature two innings each and captain’s declarations are allowed.

NewsGGarsieYsbereThe Northern’s Platinum Cricket League second round was played over the weekend with matches taking place on the 24th August 2019.

Several matches from previous rounds have been postponed for various reasons. This past weekend saw two very different games pan out.

Garsfontein took on Pretoria Boys High School in a high scoring match. Garsfontein put up a competitive first innings total of 322 all out.

Benco Van Der Walt scored an impressive 127 runs from 100 balls and formed a dominating middle order partnership with Larno Botha who scored 70 from 60 balls.

It was always going to be a tough ask from the Pretoria Boys High batting unit but the bowling from Garsfontein managed to restrict Boys High to 228 all out in 47 overs. Opening bowler Andre van Wyngaardt lead from the front picking up 4/42 in 10 overs.

Boys High took a few positives from the match with middle order batsmen Tim Ferguson carrying on with his good form from the first round of games adding to his tally of 186 runs with an unbeaten 134.

Menlopark hosted Centurion. Having already lost their previous match Menlo Park were looking to bounce back from their loss. The hosts won the toss and put Centurion into bat first, the visitors were reduced to 148 all out after 47.3 overs.

The pick of the bowlers for Menlo Park was Ryan Greyvenstein who bowled neatly picking up figures of 22/3 from 10 overs. Nathan Fox kept the score ticking along for Centurion and made 42 from 61 balls. Menlo Park’s batting unit successfully chased down the small total within 38 overs ending up on 152/4.

Paarl Gimnasium will finish the season in second position after only suffering a solitary defeat against Grey
College (33-47) during Wildeklawer. Their biggest arch-rivals, Paarl Boys’ High, takes the 3rd position after
