  • Wessels stars as Grey College hammer their namesake from PE

NewsGJanHendrikWesselsThe Grey College juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down after they hammered Grey High 58-0 in a Premier Interschools match in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon.

The boys from the Free State scored 10 tries and kept the proverbial clean sheet to record their fourth successive win over their Port Elizabeth rivals. The last time Grey High had any success in this fixture was a 27-20 victory in 2014.

It’s also the third year in a row that Grey College recorded over 50 points in this fixture. They beat Grey High 73-10 in 2017 and followed it up with a 63-8 demolition job in 2018.

Grey College are still unbeaten this year, having already dealt with Selborne, Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl Boys’ High and Affies. They still have to face to Paul Roos in their final match, which should a cracking fixture.

Grey High fought hard in the first half, and only conceded two tries before the break to trail 12-0. However, their resistance would crumble in the second stanza, as Grey College, littered with provincial stars, went up a few gears after the break.

Grey College play with pace, power and precision. Their forwards hurt you upfront and set the platform for their speedy backs to run riot. They are also very good from broken play.

Wing Marcell Muller scored a hat trick for the Bloemfontein side, while lock Jan-Hendrik Wessels and hooker Andre-Hugo Venter, the son of former Bok stalwart Andre, chipped in with a brace of tries.

Captain Ian Small-Smith capped off another fine performance with a try after the break, while fullback Franco Knoetze and flyhalf FC du Plessis also crossed the line to see off the uninspiring Grey High team.

Voortrekker se enigste nederlaag in vanjaar se Wesgrow-reeks was teen Diamantveld (36-53) in Kimberley.

School of Rugby Rankings – 22 July 2019

Rugby FB iconThere is not a lot of movement in the top part of our rankings for this week.

We believe however that the knockout stages of the Virsekerbeker as well as Super August will be telling towards the final rankings for 2019. At this time it seems that Garsfontein is in almost unbeatable form, but they will have to play in the playoffs of the Virsekerbeker without four of their players who will be on national duty.

On our rankings, there is not a lot to choose between Garsfontein and Monument who occupies the fourth and fifth position respectively. Garsfontein has only suffered two defeats thus far in 2019 against top-ranked, Grey College, and Monument.

Monnas’ suffered three defeats which was against the Paarl-duo, Paarl Boishaai and Paarl Gimnasium, during Noord/Suid as well as their surprise defeat against Waterkloof in the Virsekerbeker.

Second placed, Paarl Gimnasium’s, only defeat game against Grey College during Wildeklawer. Paarl Boishaai also only suffered a defeat against Grey College, with the 20-all draw against Helpmekaar during Noord/Suid being the biggest differentiator between these two arch-rivals. This year’s annual interschools promises to be a thriller.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@rugby.supersportschools.com – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

  • Kwaggas gives Paarl Gim a huge scare before Interschools

NewsGHTSDrostdyOuteniqua gave Paarl Gimnasium a major scare in their annual clash on Saturday. Gimmies had to hold-on to a narrow three point lead to secure a 11-8 victory over the Kwaggas in George.

Outeniqua could’ve easily won the clash and had more than enough opportunities to cause an upset.

Oakdale Landbou kept their unbeaten track record since 2010 against Marlow Landbou intact when they came out on top by 18-7 in this annual clash.

  • Affies bulldozed Maritzburg College in Premier Interschools clash

NewsGGerardBothaAfrikaanse Hoër Seunskool bulldozed Maritzburg College 78-16 in a one-sided Premier Interschools match in Pretoria on Saturday.

Affies outscored College by a whopping 12 tries to two to claim their fifth-consecutive win over the KwaZulu-Natal school. It was also their biggest victory over College since 2011 when they won 55-7.

The last time Maritzburg had any success in this fixture was in 2014 when they triumphed 37-10.

The home side scored 50 points in the second half after leading 28-11 at the break.

Four of the home side’s 12 tries came in the first half, as Affies overwhelmed their opponents upfront. They put the cherry on the cake in the second half, by scoring eight tries that were a mix of skill, speed and power. It was just pure dominance by Affies from the first whistle to the last.

Affies’ big pack laid the platform with a number of brutal rolling mauls that constantly put College on the back foot throughout the encounter. The visitors just couldn’t stop the home team’s momentum and the dam wall eventually burst in the second half.

Affies lock Reinhardt Ludwig scored the first of his two tries in the ninth minute after an impressive rolling maul, while they were also awarded a penalty try in the first half from this avenue of attack.

Replacement centre Marcelle Masvikeni scored the College’s only try in the first half, shortly after Ludwig’s opening try. Brannen Webster would add another try in the second half for the visitors, but they just couldn’t get enough possession to put Affies’ defence under any pressure with ball in hand.

Affies centre Gerhard Botha scored a hat trick inside 40 minutes to leave College reeling, while flank MJ Janse van Rensburg also contributed a second-half brace, as the Pretoria side moved past the half-century even before the hour-mark.

Affies then scored four more tries in the last 10 minutes of the match, with wings Kyle Liebenberg and Bjorn van Wyk, prop Werner Kruger and flank Brendhan Kelbrick all crossing the line before the referee eventually put College out of their misery.

    Scorers:

Affies 78 (28) –  Tries: Gerhard Botha (3), Reinhardt Ludwig (2),   MJ Janse van Rensburg (2), Kyle Liebenberg, Werner Kruger, Bjorn van Wyk, Brendhan Kelbrick, Penalty TryConversions: JP Wentzel (4), Michael van Aswegen (4). Maritzburg College 16 (11) – Tries: Marcelle Masvikeni, Brannen Webster. Penalties: Sven Zunckel (2).
