  • Confidence in Sport Defined: Part 1 of Series with Iain Shippey

Iain ShippeyThe textbook definition of self-confidence is ‘the strength of belief in one’s ability to perform a task.’

My mentor Dr Cohn’s definition of self-confidence is, ‘how strongly you believe in your ability to execute a physical skill or to perform a task.’ Confidence is derived from a baseline of past performances, practice, and preparation.

Confidence is so important because you may have all the ability in the world to perform well, but if you don’t believe you have that ability, then you won’t perform up to that ability.

A rugby player who is just starting out has little or no confidence in his ability to pass the ball with speed and accuracy. With practice, he becomes competent in passing the ball. With the development of competency, or skill mastery, confidence grows. Athletes also derive confidence simply from the belief that they are physically talented and suited for a certain type of sport.

Another distinction worth mentioning is the difference between ‘practice’ self-confidence, which comes from working hard to develop skills in practice, and competitive’ self-confidence. Athletes do not always transfer their practice self-confidence to the competitive arena; therefore, they lack competitive self-confidence. This form of confidence is critical to success in competition. It may seem odd that an athlete can gain overwhelming self-confidence through practice, and yet be unable to maintain that confidence in competition. In the third eBook in this series I will write on the topic of Competition Mindsets.

    Sources of Self-Confidence

Each person derives confidence from different things but essentially, athletes gain confidence from three major sources:

    • Practice
    • Immediate past performance
    • Possessing a winning attitude and outlook

Practice: When I was 10 years old, we had a smart cricket coach, Mr. Lee, at Parkview Primary in Johannesburg. He reasoned that as bowling is not that accurate at a junior level, if we were well drilled in punishing loose balls bowled down the leg side, we would score many additional runs. At break times at school we did ‘throw-downs’ with tennis balls on the tennis courts to rehearse the shots again and again.

We were confident to hit the tennis balls as they couldn’t hurt you in the same way that the hard cricket ball did. We practiced the shots again and again and the execution of the shot became engrained in our subconscious and in our muscle memory.  Golfer Samuel Snead says, “Practice puts brains in your muscles.”

Before long the hard work at practice was being rewarded – with us scoring a lot of runs from leg-side shots in matches. Repetition and focused practice are a major source of confidence.

Performance: In that same season, I scored my first 50 in a match. The leg side shots contributed in a major way to me scoring more runs. I was finding myself able to clear the boundary over the school fence for six. A lid on my game had been lifted, I now knew that I was able to score 50’s and hit an array of leg-side shots.

A good performance has the potential to shatter a mental barrier and lift your game to another level. According to legend, experts said for years that the human body was simply not capable of running a 4-minute mile.

It wasn’t just dangerous; it was impossible. Further legends hold that people had tried for over a thousand years to break the barrier, even tying bulls behind them to increase the incentive to do the impossible. In the 1940’s, the mile record was pushed to 4:01, where it stood for nine years, as runners struggled with the idea that, just maybe, the experts had it right.

Perhaps the human body had reached its limit. On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute barrier, running the distance in 3:59.4.

As part of his training, he relentlessly visualized the achievement to create a sense of certainty in his mind and body. Barely a year after Bannister’s accomplishment, someone else ran a mile in under 4 minutes. Then some more runners did. Now, it’s almost routine.

Even strong high-schoolers today run 4-minute miles.  Michael Atherton, the cricket commentator on Skype Sports, was formerly the captain of the English cricket team. He was a Test opening batsman, who regularly took on the most hostile fast bowlers in the world.

He would take a DVD recording of some of his most remarkable innings on tour with him – and he would watch them again and again to build his confidence and remind himself of his potential.

A winning attitude and outlook:  One of the greatest assets you need to cultivate and build as an athlete is a winning attitude and outlook. Can you recall a time when it was your gritty or positive attitude that lifted your performance to another level?

I have often noticed that players who are physically smaller than others have developed a spunky attitude which causes them to stand out above the rest. I have had the privilege of working with a lot of players from the Springbok Rugby team and have seen them in training situations on multiple occasions.

The small scrumhalves often stand out in terms of determination and guts. Temba Buvuma has burst onto the cricket scene as a test batsman.

This South African player is only 5 foot 2 inches tall, yet he is excelling. Because he is short, he has had to adapt his play in terms of his reach; and he has become a master at playing an intimidating short-pitched ball. He has adapted his craft and is holding his own as a batter in the highest form of the game.

I mention these sources of confidence because you absolutely must tap into what makes your personal ‘confidence clock’ tick. Most athletes will tell you that confidence comes from past success, from playing well, or from positive experiences in their sport.

As athletes develop competence through successful experience, confidence grows.

Other sources from which athletes derive confidence include:

    • Great coaching
    • Being part of a strong team
    • A positive support group
    • Practice and repetition
    • Performing well in practice
    • Having a supportive “team” of professionals
    • Top equipment (bats, racquets, boots….)
    • Effective strength training
    • Fitness
    • Diet
    • Mental preparation
    • Feeling prepared
    • Familiarity with the conditions
    • Doing the right things off the field, course, track or court

    Personal Check-in and Application

    •  Rate your confidence on a scale of 1 – 10
    • Are you practicing under pressure, simulating match conditions as much as possible?
    • What past performances can you re-run as a video in your mind before a match or race?
  • Glade replaces injured Jacobs in Junior Springbok squad

Glade replaces injured Jacobs in Junior Springbok squad

JuniorSpringboksKeagan Glade (prop) has been included in the Junior Springbok World Rugby U20 Championship squad as an injury replacement for Hanro Jacobs, whose tournament dreams were shattered due to a foot injury.

Jacobs suffered the injury at training late last week and subsequent scans confirmed that he will not recover in time for the international extravaganza in Argentina, which prompted Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux to call up Glade.

The powerful Xerox Golden Lions prop is no stranger to the Junior Springbok set-up as he trained with the squad last year, but missed out on selection for the World Rugby U20 Championship in the south of France. He was also a member of the SA Rugby Academy squad which trained with the Junior Springbok coaches in Stellenbosch since February.

The Junior Springboks will depart for the World Rugby U20 Championship on Wednesday, where they will face Scotland, Georgia and New Zealand in the pool stages on 4, 8 and 12 June respectively.

“I feel for Hanro, especially after all the hard work he has put in during the last few months,” said Roux.

“We will miss his presence on and off the field. But it is fantastic to be able to call on Keagan, who has been part of the wider training squad for the last two seasons, and who is familiar with our structures and systems.

“He was a member of the SA Rugby Academy squad, so he knows the coaching staff and his team-mates well, and he has slotted in with ease since being called up to train with us. It is fantastic to see how he is embracing this opportunity.”

With a little over a week before the team’s opening match against Scotland, Roux was pleased with the work the players had put in since arriving back from their warm-up tour to the UK, and he said they were looking forward to the tournament.

“We worked hard on fine-tuning our game and on our conditioning in the last few weeks, and are looking forward to challenge in Argentina,” said Roux.

“We know what is expected of us over there and it is vital that we get off to a strong start and build on our performances as the competition progresses.

“We have been preparing for the Scotland game, in particular, since we arrived back from the UK, and we will continue to put the finishing touches in place when we touch down in Argentina.”

Commenting on the mood in the camp, Roux said: “The players are in good spirits and the energy in camp is high, so everyone is excited and looking forward to the competition.”

  • Gutsy SACS give Paarl Gimnasium a scare

Gutsy SACS give Paarl Gimnasium a scare

NEwsGSACSPaarlGimThe South African College High School (SACS) produced an excellent performance against the highly-ranked Paarl Gimnasium team. SACS led 19-12 at half-time and 19-17 with twenty-five minutes to go, only to succumb 41-19.

Paarl Gim were on the attack from the outset but SACS defended their phase play well. Ten minutes in Gim got their much vaunted maul going for the first time. From that they hit two of their heavy forward pods before reversing play back blind to left-wing Stravino Jacobs, who sliced through the SACS defence to score. Flyhalf Jandre’Burger converted.

SACS won the kick-off back and put together some phases which resulted in a penalty converted by debutant flyhalf Nicholas Haasbroek. SACS used a contestable kick from the kick-off and again won the ball back. An excellent passage of phase play saw them awarded another penalty, which Haasbroek duly converted.

On twenty-four minutes Gim again used their formidable formula, which for years has proved so difficult to stop. They make rugby look like such an easy game when their massive forward pods get consecutive gain-line carries before unleashing their speedy backs. Outside centre Ethan James was elusive all game and it was him who set up win Curwin Gertse for their second try.

SACS No. 13 Rihaz Fredericks carried well soon after and the hosts converted another penalty. Four minutes later Haasbroek nailed his fourth of the half to tie the scores up. On the stroke of half-time fullback Duran Koevort snapped up a loose ball, much like he did the week before, and raced clear. He had lots of work to do but beat the cover brilliantly to score.

Haasbroek kicked the conversion from the touchline and SACS were in Dreamland, leading the mighty Paarl Gim 19-12 as the referee’s whistle sounded.

Emotions ran high as thoughts raced back to 2017 when SACS had come from 19-nil down at half-time to beat Paarl Gim 22-19. Pieter Rossouw raced onto the field to give his team some stern words.

Thankfully for Gim scrumhalf Bobby Alexander took the bull by the horns and scored soon after the interval. Burger missed the conversion and SACS still had the lead with twenty-five mnites to go! Gim were rampant though and were held up over the line twice before Burger got the first of his two tries of the half as he glided through from a midfield scrum.

At 24-19 down SACS had an excellent opportunity to tie the scores up as they attacked the blindside after a lineout only for the final pass to go awry. From then on SACS were struggling to contain wave after wave of Paarl Gim attack. Bobby Alexander using the platform laid by his pack to secure his second half hatrick with just over ten minutes to go.

Burger, who had a bad day with the boot, put the final nail in SACS’s coffin as he grabbed his second try with only two minutes remaining. It was a comfortable win in the end on the scoreboard for Paarl Gim but SACS must be commended for their yeoman effort on the day.

Both teams have tough encounters again next week as Gim travel to the farm to face Boland Landbou while SACS host archrivals Wynberg Boy’s High in a televised FNB Classic Clash (kickoff 12.15pm)

    Scorers:

Paarl Gimnasium 41 (12) – Tries: Bobby Alexander (3), Jandré Burger (2), Stravino Jacobs, Curwin Gertse. Conversions: Burger (3). SACS 19 (19) – Try: Duran Koevort. Conversion: Nicholas Haasbroek. Penalties: Haasbroek (4).

  • School Rugby Rankings – 27 May 2019

    School Rugby Rankings – 27 May 2019

Rugby FB iconWelcome back Paul Roos!

Paul Roos Gimnasium makes their first appearance on School of Rugby’s Rankings for 2019 after completing four matches against local opposition in their 16-29 defeat against third-placed Paarl Boys’ High at Brug Street on Saturday.

It was suspected that Paul Roos Gimnasium would feature nearer to the top of the rankings after returning from the Sanix International tournament as “World Champions”, but two successive defeats against second-placed Paarl Gimnasium (15-42) and Paarl Boys’ High see them taking the sixth position on School of Rugby’s latest rankings.

They will probably shortly move past Rondebosch Boys’ High which is in the fifth position. Rondebosch Boys’ High’s only defeat thus far in the season came at the hands of Paul Roos (7-31). As our ranking system’s algorithm’s aim is to take all emotions out of the equation we only consider your results so far in the season and not who you might still win or lose against as the season progresses.

Boland Landbou also got their groove back on the weekend with a 51-38 victory in an entertaining match against Stellenberg. The team from the Agter-Paarl moved closer to regaining Top 20 status with this victory and will probably finish within this space for 2019.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@rugby.supersportschools.com – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.
