  • Helpmekaar looming as the team to beat at St John’s

Helpmekaar looming as the team to beat at St John’s

HelpmekaarHelpmekaar coach Shaun Jackson isn’t entirely sure what to make of word on rugby’s grapevine that his team is the one to beat at this month’s Standard Bank St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival.

A recent draw with Paarl Boys and a win over Boland Landbou is difficult to ignore, but equally, Jackson doesn’t want to put too much pressure on his youngsters.

Last year Helpmekaar enjoyed a clean sweep at the festival and there will be expectations, on the western side of the city at least, for similar form in 2019.
Jackson reckons he has around half the side from 2018, with the new first XV recruits all having slotted in well. Four wins from as many matches this season indicate that the transition has been seamless.

Jackson is intrigued by the school’s opening fixture against Stellenberg, likening the Cape school’s development as a rugby powerhouse to that of his own.

“They’ve also come through strongly in the past five years. They’re now reckoned to be one of the big fishes.”

Jackson is taking nothing for granted, conceding that St Albans, to be played on Easter Saturday, and Windhoek will be tough opposition. “They always have big, strong boys.”

If Helpmekaar has worked hard at creating a grand rugby tradition, Jackson says that the turning point was probably last year. Quite apart from Helpmekaar’s success at St John’s, they excelled in the Virseker Beker, something Jackson ascribes to all the team coaches buying into the same system.

Jackson is a big fan of the St John’s Festival and knows they must make every appearance count, especially with a revolving invitation policy that doesn’t guarantee long-term participation.

“The festival is brilliant and I’ve spoken to [organiser] AD Morris, telling him we always want to be there. It’s a great vibe, the boys love it and it’s brilliantly organised.”

Among Helpmekaar’s old boys are Springbok Thys Burger and Italian international Gert Peens, while Willie Oosthuizen captained SA Schools in 1976. Other graduates include Deon Coetzee, Cheese van Tonder and Willie Wepener, all fine players who did the Helpmekaar tradition proud.

    Fixtures:

    April 18: vs Stellenberg, 6.10pm.
    April 20: vs St Alban’s College, 11.45am.
April 22: vs Windhoek Gym, 12pm.

  • Roux praises Junior Boks’ character after Namibia XV victory

Roux praises Junior Boks’ character after Namibia XV victory

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux praised his team’s character to rack up a 50-8 victory against the Namibia XV on Saturday in wet conditions at Tygerberg Rugby Club in Cape Town in their second U20 International Series match.

The Junior Springboks scored twice in a closely-fought first half for a 14-8 halftime lead after rain poured down during their warm-up, but they stepped up the tempo in the second half and capitalised on their try-scoring chances, which saw Sebastiaan Jobb, Celimpilo Gumede and James Mollentze score two tries each.

The SA Under-20s backed up their eight tries in the match with another strong defensive effort, limiting the Namibia XV to an intercept try and penalty goal.
“We are happy with the result, as we wanted to build an innings, although the wet field and soft underfoot conditions made it difficult,” said Roux.

“We managed to score a few tries in the second half, which was pleasing.”

Roux was delighted with their defensive effort once again, while he was satisfied with the improvement in the Junior Boks’ scrummaging.

“Defensively we did very well again, as the only try we conceded was from an intercept,” said the coach.

“I also thought our scrums improved, although there were one or two scrums in which we could have performed better.”

While Roux was pleased with two wins out of two in the series so far, he said the match against the Argentina U20s in Stellenbosch on Tuesday would be the true test for his charges.

“I guess the two victories does give us confidence, but we need to be ready for Argentina in the next match,” Roux said.

“They are an excellent side and they will want to show that they can be a force to reckoned with.”

The Junior Springboks and Namibia battled to find their rhythm early in the first half as the wet ball resulted in a number of handling errors, but they settled well in the second quarter and the points followed.

The Namibia XV struck first with a penalty goal by Cliven Loubser in the 24th minute, but this was cancelled out by the Junior Springboks shortly after as flanker Dylan Richardson touched down from a pick-and-go. The successful conversion by flyhalf David Coetzer pushed the hosts 7-3 ahead.

The visitors hit back with an intercept try by Peter John Walters late in the half to go up 8-7, but the Junior Springboks ensured they reclaimed the lead before halftime thanks to Mollentze, who received a well-timed pass after a break out wide to touch down.

The Junior Boks built on this momentum in the opening exchanges of the second half with Sanele Nohamba and Mollentze navigating their way through the defence within three minutes of one another to stretch the team’s lead to 26-8.

Roux’s charges continued to take advantage of their try-scoring chances as the half progressed with Jobb and Gumede each scoring two tries as they put their raw pace to good use to seal a rewarding 50-8 victory.

The team will wrap up their Under20 International Series campaign against the Argentina U20’s at Paul Roos Gymnasium on Wednesday, 17 April, while the Georgia U20’s take on the Namibia XV.

    Scorers:

Junior Springboks 50 (14) – Tries: Dylan Richardson, James Mollentze (2), Sanele Nohamba, Sabastiaan Jobb (2), Celimpilo Gumede (2). Conversions: David Coetzer (3), James Mollentze (2). Namibia XV 8 (8) – Try: Peter John Walters. Penalty goal: Cliven Loubser.

  • Buthelezi to lead Junior Boks against Namibia XV

NewsGDameonVenterPhendulani Buthelezi will lead a new-look Junior Springbok team in their second U20 International Series match against the Namibia XV at Tygerberg Rugby Club on Saturday as coach Chean Roux continues to experiment with player combinations.

The talented No 8 – who was a member of the Junior Springbok team that participated in the World Rugby U20 Championship in the south of France last year – will feature in a dynamic loose forward combination with flankers Dylan Richardson and 2018 Craven Week Player of the Year, Evan Roos.

Only two players in the starting team featured in the run-on side that met Georgia in the opening match of the series on Tuesday, namely flyhalf David Coetzer and fullback and Qamani Kota. This is in line with Roux’s objective to develop player combinations and test the players under pressure as he looks to select a 28-man squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina in June.

“We are trying to give everyone a fair chance to play in the three matches in this series, while it is also important that we continue experimenting with player combinations,” said Roux.

Roux expected a physical encounter against the Namibia XV – a senior side – who will be determined to give a strong account of themselves after going down 62-8 against the Argentina U20s in the opening match of the series.

“The Namibia XV have a good pack of forwards, they are physical and they play an exciting brand of rugby, so we have to be ready for them,” said Roux. “Hopefully our young players adapt quickly against them and play good rugby.”

The coach singled out Junior Boks’ scrums, in particular, as an area they needed to improve on from the match against Georgia, and he hoped they could build on their rock-solid defence after conceding only a penalty try and a penalty goal in that match.

“I would like to see us build on our defensive performance from the first match, and the big improvement we need to see this week is in our scrums because we were not good enough against Georgia,” said Roux.

“We also want to speed up the game, so hopefully we get enough possession to put our skill-set to good use and play good rugby.”

Saturday’s Junior Springbok match kicks off at 13h30 and will be streamed live on DSTV Now, SS.com and SS YouTube, as well as on www.springboks.rugby. The game will be followed by a clash between Georgia and Argentina 15h15.

In a late change to the side, David Kriel had to withdraw due to an ankle injury, and Roux decided not to replace him amongst the substitutes.

The U20 International Series will conclude on Wednesday, 17 April, with the Junior Springboks meeting Argentina and Georgia taking on the Namibia XV.

The Junior Springboks will face England and Wales on a warm-up tour to the UK after the U20 International Series where their preparations will continue for the World Rugby U20 Championship.

Roux’s team will open up their World Rugby U20 Championship campaign against Scotland on Tuesday, 4 June, before taking on Georgia (Saturday, 8 June) and New Zealand (Wednesday, 12 June). The semi-finals will be contested on Monday, 17 June, and the final on Saturday, 22 June.

Junior Springbok squad to face Namibia XV:

15 Andrew Kota (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 14 Marnus Potgieter (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 13 Jay-Cee Nel (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 12 James Mollentze (Toyota Free State), 11 Sebastiaan Jobb (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 10 David Coetzer (DHL Western Province), 9 Sanele Nohamba (Cell C Sharks), 8 Phendulani Buthelezi (captain, Cell C Sharks), 7 Dylan Richardson (Cell C Sharks), 6 Evan Roos (Cell C Sharks), 5 Janko Swanepoel (Vodacom Blue Bulls),,  4 Emile van Heerden (Cell C Sharks), 3 Hanro Jacobs (Cell C Sharks), 2 Joe van Zyl (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 1 Nkosikhona Masuku (Xerox Golden Lions). Replacements: 16 Dameon Venter (Xerox Golden Lions), 17 Thabiso Mdletshe (Cell C Sharks), 18 Kudzwai Dube (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 19 Lunga Ncube (Cell C Sharks), 20 Jaco Labuschagne (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 21 Celimpilo Gumede (Cell C Sharks), 22 Jaden Hendrikse (Cell C Sharks), 24 Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Xerox Golden Lions), 25 Francke Horn (DHL Western Province), 26 Mnombo Zwelendaba (DHL Western Province), 27 Caleb Dingaan (Cell C Sharks), 28 Thaakir Abrahams (Cell C Sharks).

  • “Boland Schools” still rule the Western Province roost

NewsGDurbanvilleThe three “Boland Schools” that faced their Western Province Premier peers from Cape Town on Saturday taught them a rugby lesson.

Paarl Gimnasium downed Diocesan College (Bishops) by 31-10, while Paul Roos Gimnasium proved too strong for Rondebosch Boys’ High by 31-7. Boland Landbou fired on all cylinders by defeating Wynberg Boys’ High by 62-31 in an exciting match that delivered 93 points in 70 minutes.

Durbanville made a huge turnaround by beating SACS by 33-24 in their clash. When these two teams met for the last time in Durbanville two years ago SACS walked from the pitch with the scoreboard 100-0 in their favour.

Paarl Boys’ High came out on top against a fiery Outeniqua by 34-26. Their Nr. 8, Gideon van Wyk, scored a brace of tries as Boishaai enjoyed most of the territory in the first half.

Flyhalf, Kian Meadon, dictated play with his boot and kept his side in the strike zone. The home side led by 20-7 at the break.

Stellenberg only managed to take the game away from Brackenfell in the second half of their encounter. Stellies enjoyed a marginal 14-3 lead at half-time but finished strong by claiming a 31-10 victory.

Oakdale Landbou came out on top by 42-40 against HTS Drostdy in an exciting encounter just outside Riversdale. It seemed as if the status quo will be kept of the last couple of year’s with the visiting side claiming victory, but the Bulle from Oakdale managed to grab the victory.

The home side led for the first time when their outside centre, Alwich van der Linde, slotted a penalty in the 15th minute of the second half to give them a 35-33 lead. HTS Drostdy’s flyhalf, Cariton Pietersen, enjoyed a good day at the office. He scored a hat-trick of tries and converted four of his team’s tries for a personal contribution of 23 points.

Tygerberg’s centre Wiehan Meyer scored four tries as his team defeated Milnerton by 43-31. HTS Bellville’s flyhalf, Ashwill Horn, scored all his side’s points as the defeated Kasselsvlei by 19-13. Horn scored his side’s only try which he converted and also slotted four penalties.
