    Dolphins secure Cubs Week title

The Dolphins is the new champions of Cricket South Africa’s annual Cubs Week after keeping their unbeaten status with a 47-run victory over the Cape Cobras on the penultimate day of the tournament.

The Dolphins will face the Warriors tomorrow in their final clash of the tournament in a match that has nothing more than pride at stake. Opening batsman Thamsanqa Khumalo (113) scored a century against the Cobras as his side managed 270/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Andile Mogakane also produced an allround performance as he chipped in with a half-century (56) as well as picking up three wickets at the cost of only 18 runs. Yves Kamanzi (4/29) was the pick of the bowlers for the Dolphins as the Cobras were restricted to 223.

Ruben Terblanché (92) missed out on his century for the Cobras but continued his excellent form at the Cubs Week.

The Warriors needed seven runs from the last over to secure a victory over the Lions at the Van der Stel grounds in Stellenbosch. Lions’ allrounder Marco Jansen (1/38) stepped up to the plate and only conceded two runs during the final over of the match.

The Lions recorded 231/7 in their allotted over thanks to contributions by Michael Copeland (57), Jansen (47) and Bryce Parsons (45). For the Warriors Matt Dewar (52) and Tristan Stubbs (51) recorded half-centuries but could not manage to convert their innings.

It was however the heroics of Calvin Flanegan (83*) and Pheko Moletsane (30*) with the bat that helped the Knights home. They’ve shared an unbeaten 98-run partnership over the fifth wicket.

Dolphins 270/7 (Thamsanqa Khumalo 113, Andile Mogakane 56, Gareth Schreuder 31*; Siya Plaatjie 3/32); Cape Cobras 223 (Ruben Terblanché 92, Bonga Makhakha 29, Achille Cloete 26*; Yves Kamanzi 4/29, Andile Mogakane 3/18). Dolphins won by 47 runs.

  • Dolphins stay unbeaten at Cubs Week

Dolphins stay unbeaten at Cubs Week

The Dolphins are the only unbeaten side left after the first three days of the annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch.

The team from KwaZulu-Natal defeated the Knights by 97 runs mostly thanks to a five-wicket haul by SA Schools’ fast bowler Lifa Ntanzi. He removed five batsmen for only 15 runs from the crease to help restrict the Knights to 132.

Ntanzi removed Knights captain, Garnett Tarr, and CP Klijnhans (0) with the second and third deliveries of the game to leave the them against the ropes at 0/2. Tarr recorded the highest innings (181*) ever at the Cubs Week on the second day against the Cape Cobras.

Matthew Montgomery (98) just missed out on his century but his continued good form saw his average at this year’s tournament rise to 106 runs per innings.

Despite an excellent bowling performance by Ethan Wentzel (6/38) the Titans is still searching for their first victory at the week. The Lions won the match by 32 runs.

Lions’ opening batsman Cameron Shekleton (58) recorded his third half-century of the tournament. He has accumulated 238 runs at an average of 119 runs thus far.

The Cape Cobras’ Ruan Terblanché is also experiencing an exceptional Cubs Week so far. The opening batsmen struck 61 runs in his side’s six wicket victory over the Warriors. Terblanché is the leading batsmen after three days with 245 runs to his name at an average of 122 runs per innings.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Warriors 192/9 (Tristan Stubbs 67, Nicholas Fowler 38; Mihlali Mpongwana 4/42, Siya Plaatjie 3/34); Cape Cobras 194/4 (Ruan Terblanché 61, Bonga Makhakha 48, Rudolf Claassen 31*; Matthew Fourie 3/48). Cape Cobras won by six wickets.

  • Pieterse stars for KES in Port Elizabeth

King Edward VIIKing Edward VII’s Heinrigh Pieterse was in a devastating mood during the opening day of the bi-annual cricket week hosted by Grey High School in Port Elizabeth. Pieterse scored 152 runs to help his side reach 275/9 in 58 overs in their match against Northwood.

Pieterse faced 155 deliveries in his innings and struck 14 fours and five sixes. He shared a 74-run partnership with Kian Schwartz (27) over the fifth wicket as well as a 71-run partnership with Timothy Berman (0*) at the end of the innings.

Pieterse lost his wicket with the final delivery being caught by Samkelo Gasa (3/67) off his own bowling. Berman only faced 11 deliveries in the partnership and didn’t contribute any runs but did very well to keep Pieterse on strike.

Pieterse was also the pick of the bowlers for KES as he picked up four wickets for 40 runs as Northwood was bowled out for 152.

Grey High School’s Tiaan van Vuuren returned from injury with 93 runs against Affies. Van Vuuren missed the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town due to a stress fracture. Affies averted defeat thanks to some gritty batting by Gunter Kruger (45) and Dewald Brevis (33).

Grey College of Bloemfontein had too much firepower for Pearson. The team from the City of Roses needed only two wickets when play was called to secure an outright victory. Dean de Bruin was the star performer as he picked up a five-wicket haul as Grey bowled Pearson out for a mere 64 runs.

He removed five batsmen for only 21 runs in Pearsons’ first innings. In the second innings, he got rid of another two batsmen for 27 runs.

Glenwood’s Bandile Ngcobo (5/37) also managed to pick up a five-wicket haul as his side managed a narrow victory on the first innings against Selborne College. Jason Login (5/43) also completed a five-wicket haul for St Charles College as they defeated Framesby.

No scorecard was received of the match between Durban High School and Muir College.

  • Terrific Tarr leads Knights to an impressive victory

Terrific Tarr leads Knights to an impressive victory

The second day of Cricket South Africa’s annual Cubs Week in Stellenbosch belonged to no one other than Knights captain, Garnett Tarr.

He recorded the highest-ever innings at the prestigious tournament with an unbeaten 181 runs which also helped his side secure an impressive victory over the Cape Cobras at the Distell-field. Tarr struck two sixes from SA Schools bowler Achille Cloete in the 46th over to take his team past the target of 280 they needed for victory.

The opening batsmen faced only 135 deliveries. His innings included 28 boundaries of which seven only touched the ground for the first time on the other side of the boundary rope.

South African u19 batsman Jonathan Bird (106) also managed to score a century in the game, but in the end, it was not enough for the Cobras to secure a win. Bird and Ruan Terblanche (68) shared a 158-run opening partnership. When they were still swinging the willow, it looked as if the Cobras would go past 300 in their allotted 50 overs.

The Dolphins must be contenders for the title after their second victory at the tournament. They defeated the Lions by 60 runs.

The Dolphins batted first and reached 230/7 in their allotted overs thanks to contributions by Matthew Montgomery (76), Thamsanqa Khumalo (53) and Jason Kraft (39).

Despite the efforts from the allrounder of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week, Marco Janson (5/47), picked up the first five-wicket haul at this year’s tournament.

The Lions’ opening batsman Cameron Shekleton (82*) carried his bat, but could not find enough assistance from his teammates to get a partnership going.

The Warriors just missed out on another bonus-point victory in their match against the Titans. The Warriors won by six wickets with Nonelela Yikha and Luke Beaufort both yet again playing prominent roles.

Yikha removed three batsmen at the cost of only 17 runs to help restrict the Titans to 184. Juandré Scheepers (42) and Ethan Wentzel (37) the only batsmen managing to offer some resistance.

Beaufort (49) followed his century on the opening day up by just missing out on a half-century. Tristan Stubbs (37) and Emihle Mqogi (30*) also made valuable contributions for the victors.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Cape Cobras 279/5 (Jonathan Bird 106, Ruan Terblanché 68, Justin Broad 50; Mason Zacharea 2/21); Knights 282/5 (Garnett Tarr 181*, Calvin Flanegan 30; Mihlali Mpongwana 2/20). Knights won by five wickets.

Dolphins 230/7 (Matthew Montgomery 76, Thamsanqa Khumalo 53, Jason Kraft 39; Marco Jansen 5/47); Lions 170 (Cameron Shekleton 82*; Mondli Khumalo 3/30, Andile Mogakane 2/23). Dolphins won by 60 runs.

Titans 184 (Juandré Scheepers 42, Ethan Wentzel 37, Dian Forrester 28; Nonelela Yikha 3/17, Ethan Frosler 2/31); Warriors 186/4 (Luke Beaufort 49, Tristan Stubbs 37, Emihle Mqogi 30*; Dian Forrester 2/32). Warriors won by six wickets.

  • Terblanché and Beaufort stars on opening day of Cubs Week

NewsGRuanTerblancheTwo centurions, Ruan Terblanché (Cape Cobras) and Luke Beaufort (Warriors), was the heroes for their respective teams on the opening day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week in Stellenbosch.

Terblanché (116*) combined forces with Bonga Makhakha (66) in the middle to add 161 runs over the second wicket to help the Cobras secure their first victory at the Cubs Week in two years.

The Lions would’ve felt happy with the target of 244 that they’ve set, but it was the mature batting performances of Terblanché and Makhakha that were the difference in the end.

Cameron Shekleton (98) followed his impressive century during the main match of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week by almost scoring another. He was caught by Achille Cloete off the bowling of Thando Ntini (1/45) just short of the milestone.

Terblanché faced 160 deliveries in his innings of which he dispatched 13 past the boundary rope. Two of these were maximums. Makhakha, who was the hero in the historic victory for the Colts over the SA Schools side, hit only five boundaries in his innings. He faced 93 deliveries in his innings before his stumps were rearranged by Jarred Goncalves-Jardine (4/45).

Luke Beaufort (103) helped the Warriors to shock the defending champions, the Knights, by 49 runs. His century included five fours and five sixes. He shared a 128-run third wicket partnership with Matt Dewar (51) which helped the Warriors to a very competitive 224/5 on the Coetzenburg Oval in their allotted 50 overs.

SA Schools’ captain, Gerald Coetzee, put forward a good performance with the ball in hand. He got rid of three batsmen for 30 runs, but in the end, it was not enough to help the Knights secure a victory.

The Knights were bundled out for 175 runs with Nonelela Yikha (4/33) causing most of the damage.

The Dolphins didn’t experience too much trouble to drown the Titans by seven wickets in their open clash of the tournament. The Titans managed a mere 144 mostly thanks to contributions by Ximus du Plooy (46) and Eathan Wentzel (27).

SA Schools’ fast bowler Lifa Ntanzi (3/10) caused the most problems to the Titans batting line-up with his pace. He received some excellent support by Matthew Montgomery (2/18) and Mondli Khumalo (2/22).

Thamsanqa Khumalo (44) and Montgomery (38*) let their bats do the talking as they helped to secure the victory.

    Summarised Scorecards:

Warriors 224/5 (Luke Beaufort 103, Matt Dewar 51, Tristan Stubbs 26*; Gerald Coetzee 3/30); Knights 175 (Ruan Cronjé 31, Garnett Tarr 26, Pheko Moletsane 26; Nonelela Yikha 4/33, Ethan Frosler 2/20). Warriors won by 49 runs.

Lions 243/8 (Cameron Shekleton 98, Michael Copeland 59; Anele Matya 3/32, Achille Cloete 2/41); Cape Cobras 246/4 (Ruan Terblanché 116*, Bonga Makhakha 66, Extras 27; Jarred Goncalves-Jardine 4/45). Cape Cobras won by six wickets.

Titans 144 (Ximus du Plooy 46, Eathan Wentzel 27; Lifa Ntanzi 3/10, Matthew Montgomery 2/18, Mondli Khumalo 2/22); Dolphins 145/3 (Thamsanqa Khumalo 44, Matthew Montgomery 38*, Andile Mogakane 21*; Dian Forrester 1/22). Dolphins won by seven wickets.

  • SA Schools and Colts sides for 2018 announced

NewsGVictorMpitsangThe most experienced player named in the South African Schools’ cricket side, Gerald Coetzee, will captain the national schools’ side against the SA Colts at PPC Newlands in Cape Town. Coetzee is only the third player from St Andrews in Bloemfontein to have the honour of leading the SA Schools’ side.
His predecessors being Peter Carlstein (1958) and Keagan Rafferty (2010).
Glenwood High School of Durban has with two players, Thamsanqa Khumalo and Lefa Ntanzi, the biggest representation in the national schools’ side. The prestigious award for the Cricket of the Week went to Bryce Parsons of King Edward VII. Parsons is still in grade 11.
Interesting is that the last time the tournament was held in Cape Town back in 2011 this award also went to a grade 11 pupil by the name of Diego Rosier of Griqualand West.
Two players who made the SA Schools last year, Jacob Miltz and Mondli Khumalo, missed out on selection this year. Miltz didn’t even crack a place in the SA Colts side, while Khumalo managed to receive a consolation price with a place in the Colt-side.
The luckiest player to be selected must be Thando Ntini who cracked a spot in the SA Schools’ side. He only managed to grab three wickets at an average of 34 runs per victim. He scored 67 runs at an average of 16.8 runs with the bat during the week. Ntini is the son of former Protea fast bowler, Makhaya Ntini.
North West’s Marco Jansen was named as the Allrounder of the Week, but missed out on a place in the national schools’ side. He however did get a nod for the SA Colt-side.
    The teams are:
SA Schools: Gerald Coetzee (St Andrews – Free State, captain), Jonathan Bird (Diocesan College, Western Province), Achille Cloete (Paarl Boys’ High, Boland), Thamsanqa Khumalo (Glenwood, KwaZulu-Natal), Kgaudise Molefe (Jeppe High School for Boys’), Lefa Ntanzi (Glenwood, KwaZulu-Natal), Thando Ntini (Wynberg Boys’ High, Western Province), Bryce Parsons (King Edward VII, Gauteng), Caleb Pillay (Westville Boys’ High, KwaZulu-Natal), Cameron Shekleton (St Stithians College, Gauteng), Tristan Stubbs (Grey High School, Eastern Province), Nonelela Yika (Hudson Park, Border).
SA Colts: James Ritchie (Hilton College, KwaZulu-Natal – captain), Ruan Cronjé (St Andrews, Free State), Dian Forrester (Affies, Northerns), Justin Gilliland (Newlands Cricket School, Western Province), Marco Jansen (Potchefstroom Gimnasium, North West), Mondli Khumalo (Maritzburg College, KwaZulu-Natal Inland), Bonga Makaku (Newlands Cricket School, Western Province), Akeem Minnaar (Klein Nederburg, Boland), Emmanuel Motswiri (Maragon Ruimsig, Gauteng), Siya Plaatjie (Wynberg Boys’ High, Western Province), Gareth Schreuder (Hilton College, KwaZulu-Natal Inland), Tumelo Yeki (Queen’s High).
  • Gauteng on top once again at Khaya Majola Week

Gauteng on top once again at Khaya Majola Week

The Central Gauteng Lions continued their dominance at the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week by being victorious in the main match of the prestigious tournament against Western Province at Newlands in Cape Town.

This was the union’s fifth time in the last decade that it has managed to come out on top in the main match of the week. Their hero at Newlands was opening batsman Cameron Shekleton (137) who recorded the highest innings of the week with his century.

Gauteng’s spin bowler Kgaudise Molefe (4/28) was the pick of the bowling. He finished the week as the leading wicket-taker by grabbing 21 wickets at an outstanding average of eight runs per victim.

Besides Shekleton’s heroics with the bat another four batsmen Matthew Montgomery (KwaZulu-Natal), Matt Dewar (Border), Luke Beaufort (Eastern Province) and Graeme Bouwer (Mpumalanga) managed to reach triple figures to finish their tournament on a high.

Beaufort (106) helped Eastern Province to beat Free State by 22 runs. Tristan Stubbs (46) also weighed in to finish the week as the leading run-scorer with 287 runs at an average of 71.8 per innings.

Matthew Montgomery (104) and Prealin Naidu (5/45) both played influential roles as KwaZulu-Natal defeated their neighbours KwaZulu-Natal Inland by 36 runs.

Graeme Bouwer’s (104) helped Mpumalanga to a three-wicket victory over North West. Border’s Matt Dewar (102) managed to convert an innings after getting starts is most of his innings earlier in the week. His century helped Border secure a seven run victory over Namibia at Langa.

Van Zyl Smith (55) and Saad Shabbir (55) shared an opening partnership of 105 runs

Northern Cape’s, Mason Zacharea (61) and Garyn Weyers (42), shared a 95-run partnership over the eighth wicket to help their side from 65/7 to be able to finish their innings at a more respectable 188 runs.

This also enabled Northern Cape to bag their second victory of the week by defeating Limpopo by 79 runs. Not even a five-wicket haul by Sello Malatji (5/38) could help Limpopo to what would’ve been their first victory at this year’s tournament.

Northern Cape’s Stephan de Klerk (4/15), Weyers (3/20) and Juan Mpofu (3/22) also bowled really well to help secure the victory.
