Gauteng and WP continue their dominance at Khaya Majola Week

NewsGBryceParsonsHosts, Western Province, will take on Gauteng in the main match of the 2018-edition of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week at Newlands in Cape Town on Thursday.

It will be the sixth time that these two teams will face each other in the main match of this prestigious tournament in the last ten years. Gauteng has beaten Western Province three times in the five previous meetings, while Western Province came out on top twice.

Even more remarkable is the fact that in the last ten years it was only once in 2016 when Northerns en Free State met in the main match in Bloemfontein that neither Gauteng or Western Province featured in the main game.

Gauteng’s Bryce Parsons (129*) continued his excellent form this season with the bat as he scored the only century of the day in his side’s convincing victory over Northerns. Parsons also moved into the top position on the run-scorers table with 253 runs thus far at the tournament.

Gauteng’s left-arm orthodox spinner Kgaudise Molefe is the top wicket-taker at the week with 17 wickets at an average of 8.3 runs per victim.

Western Province is the only unbeaten side left in the tournament after ending Boland’s runs by 46 runs. Boland’s national under 19 seamer, Achille Cloete (5/34), had WP stumbling at 27/5 thanks to his opening spell in which he got rid of four batsmen at the cost of only 11 runs.

Justin Gilliland (54) and Guy Sheena (61) pulled it back for WP with their half-centuries and helped their team to a more respectable total of 213.

Free State’s national u19-player, Gerald Coetzee, was on fire as he featured with both bat and ball as his team demolished South Western Districts by 190 runs. Coetzee (56*), his captain Garnett Tarr (61) and Calvin Flanegan (54) all weighed in with half-centuries as Free State scored 250/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Coetzee (2/21) then also helped to bundle SWD out for only 60 runs. Ruan Cronjé (3/21) and Tshediso Kheswa (2/2) caused the most damage to SWD’s batting line-up.

Eastern Province’s captain, Tristan Stubbs (67*), also continued his good form with the bat as he scored his second half-century of the tournament as his side defeated Easterns by four wickets. Stubbs scored 241 runs thus far in two innings less than Parsons. The latter however face 193 deliveries less than Stubbs.

KwaZulu-Natal’s medium pacer Steven Naidoo joined an elite group of bowlers by bagging a hat-trick in his side’s 73-run victory over Namibia. His hat-trick came in the 16th over as he firstly trapped Erich von Mollendorf (10) before rearranging Ramon Wilmot (0) stumps with the very next delivery. He completed his hat-trick by also trapping Jan-Izak de Villiers (0) in front.

Naidoo finished the match with bowling figures of 4/13 as Namibia was bundled out for a mere 122. He received some valuable assistance from Matthew Montgomery (3/7) with the ball in hand. Naidoo also struck an unbeaten 66 runs which helped him walk away with the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day award.

Border’s Nonelela Yikha (6/22) produced the best bowling performance of the fourth day as his side restricted Limpopo to a mere 86 runs. Luke Dallas (3/17) also troubled the batsmen from Limpopo.

  • WP, Boland unbeaten at Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week so far

NewsG AndrewLouwHosts, Western Province, and Boland are the only unbeaten sides left after the third day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town. They will also face each other on Wednesday for a place in the main match of the week.

Boland, KwaZulu-Natal and KwaZulu-Natal Inland were the only sides that managed to be victorious in their two Twenty/20 matches on the third day in the Mother City. Western Province’s match against North West in the morning session was abandoned due to rain without a ball being bowled.

The Coca-Cola Hero of the Day, Matt Pollard, produced a match wining bowling performance which saw Free State missing out on a possible opportunity to book a place in the main match of the week.

Free State was cruising at 73/2 chasing 122 for victory when Pollard came into the attack. He removed four batsmen for a mere 11 runs in his four overs. After he finished his spell the Free Staters were with their backs against the wall on 104/7.

Free State recorded an impressive victory of 36 runs over Gauteng in the morning session in a match that was reduced to 10 overs per side. Free State amassed 127/7 in their allotted ten overs with captain, Garnett Tarr (32) and Gerald Coetzee (29) taking the Gauteng bowling attack apart.

Pheko Moletsane (21) also contributed with the bat as well as held on to a spectacular catch at short fine-leg to get rid of Bryce Parsons (42).

Boland’s opening batsman Ruan Terblanché (71*) helped his side keep their unbeaten status with an unbeaten half-century against North West. The only other two half-centuries on the third day was scored by Shaun Fouché (Namibia) and Ludwig Kaestner (Northerns).

Fouché scored an unbeaten 51 as Namibia schocked Northerns by seven wickets. Kaestner also scored an unbeaten 51 runs as his side steamrolled Limpopo by nine wickets.

Western Province kept it late in their afternoon match against South Western Districts to come out on top by two wickets. Lehan Botha’s (40) bat has done most of the talking in this victory for WP.

KwaZulu-Natal Inland’s Hayden Rossouw was in a devastating mood in his sides match against Easterns in the morning. He scored an unbeaten 24 runs off only five deliveries. His innings included three sixes and a four.

Gauteng finished on a high by defeating Easterns by nine wickets mostly thanks to their spin bowler Kgaudise Molefe (3/21).

Mpumalanga restricted Border to a mere 77 runs with Ewan Lombaard (4/12) and Tsepiso Magagula (4/27) causing most of the damage. Magagula also held on to a spectacular catch which puts him in the running to be named the Fielder of the Week.

  • Molefe, Fowler and Wessels set Khaya Majola Week alight

NewsGCokeWeekGauteng’s SA Schools spin bowler, Kgaudise Molefe, was on top of his game as his side secured an outright victory against Border on the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town.

Molefe was honoured with the accolade as Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for his performance.

Molefe bowled right through both Border’s innings and got rid of seven batsmen conceding only 39 runs in the 23.3 overs he bowled. Border was knocked out for 66 runs in their first innings and could only muster 46 runs before losing their fifth wicket which secured the outright victory for Gauteng.

Molefe boasted bowling figures of 4/19 in the first innings, while removing three batsmen for a mere 20 runs in the second innings.

Gauteng only needed to bat once declaring their innings at 211/9 after valuable contributions by captain, Jacob Miltz (70) and Bryce Parsons (46).

The only century of the second day was scored by Free State’s Calvin Flanegan (110). He faced 99 deliveries in his innings against Mpumalanga and dispatched 13 of them past the boundary rope of which three was maximums.

Free State almost managed to secure an outright victory, but just couldn’t manage to pick up the last second innings wicket op Mpumalanga they needed. Flanegan received some valuable support from CP Klijhans (73) and Ruan Cronjé (33*).

The best bowling performance of the day belonged to Eastern Province’s off-spinner, Nicholas Fowler. He picked up seven wickets for a mere 37 runs his side’s victory over KwaZulu-Natal.

The spinner’s performance was the fifth best since 1994 at the tournament. His captain, Tristan Stubbs (69), followed up his century on the opening day with a solid half-century to strengthen his chances to be selected for the South African Schools’ side.

South Western District’s seam bowler Tyrique Wessels produced a unique performance to help his side from the jaws of defeat to a victory over Namibia. SWD had to defend only 104 runs and Namibia was with their score at 68/2 on their way to secure a victory on the first innings when Wessels stepped up to the plate.

Wessels rearranged Shaun Fouché’s (49) stumps and also removed another two batsmen, Matthew de Gouveia (5) and Dian Neethling (3), to finish with the outstanding figures of 3/0 in his six overs. All of them maidens. This also allowed Reagan Rhode (4/17) to help clean up the Namibian batting line-up.

What makes his performance even more remarkable that he was only the sixth change bowler on the day.

Hosts, Western Province, had to sweat a little bit to keep Northerns to a draw in their encounter. Northerns amassed the highest total of the week a massive 290/7 in their allotted 65 overs, mostly thanks to Ximus du Plooy (61*). He received some help thanks to contributions from Modiri Litheko (44), Musa Twala (33) and Sebastian van Rooyen (32).

Western Province reached 199/7 when play was called with Justin Broad (90) and Thando Ntini (31) playing vital roles with the bat in hand to keep Northerns to a draw.

  • Vosloo steals the shine on the opening day of the CCKM2018

Coke WeekThe morning session of the opening day of the annual Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Cape Town delivered more centuries than what was scored during the entire previous week in the Mother City back in 2011.

The morning session saw Jonathan Bird (Western Province) Dian Forrester (Northerns) and Tristan Stubbs (Boland) lifting their bats in the air after reaching a century. It was however a bowler by the name of Jacques Vosloo from Mpumalanga who managed to steal the show on the opening day.

Vosloo (6/21) produced the ninth best bowling figures since 1994 to reduce the Northern Cape to 137 in their first innings at the Langa Cricket Club. Mpumalanga could only answer with 81 runs before being bundled out. This meant that Northern Cape despite Vosloo’s performance secured a victory on the first innings if there was no outright result to the game.

Vosloo (3/11) then also ripped through the Northern Cape’s second innings restricting them at 20/5 at their forced declaration after losing five wickets. Mpumalanga then bagged the outright victory thanks to a gritty innings by Cameron Howe-Dreyer (35*).

Vosloo was named the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for his brilliant performance which saw him grab nine wickets while conceding a mere 32 runs.

Forrester’s performance was also up-there as he also managed to pick up a five-wicket haul after scoring his ton against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. He struck an unbeaten 107 runs from 140 deliveries which included six fours and five sixes. He received assistance from Ludwig Kaestner (87) to help Northerns reach the highest total of the day 281/5 in their allotted 65 overs before the forced declaration.

Forrester then proceeded to get rid of five batsmen for only 25 runs as KZN Inland was restricted to 212.

The home team’s South African u19-player Jonathan Bird (114) struck his century from 170 deliveries against Border. WP’s Lehan Botha (16*) also showed that he knows how to wield the willow as the scored his 16 runs of the one over that his side’s second innings lasted before they decided to declare.

Definitely a player to watch out for during the T20’s.
Eastern Province’s captain, Tristan Stubbs (101), led from the front in his side’s drawn match against Boland. Gauteng won their encounter against KwaZulu-Natal on first innings with spin bowler Kgaudise Molefe (4/37) and Cameron Shekleton (60) performances being vital to their cause.

North West’s Marco Jansen (6/26) also picked up a five-wicket haul as South Western Districts’ batsmen struggled to play him. It did however not save his team from a first innings defeat.

It was so close or there were a fourth century on the opening day, but Namibia’s Divan la Cock (99) was stumped a solitary run short of his milestone by Glen Groenewald off the bowling of Thabo Mosefowa.

Free State won’t be too happy with their draw against Easterns after amassing 259/8 thanks to contributions by Garnett Tarr (73) and Brian Kershaw (65*). It was however the batting of Luke Holland (82) and Thulani Tembela (51) that frustrated the team from Bloemfontein and secured the draw.

  • New Zealand teams dominate rest of the world contingent for #WSF2019

New Zealand teams dominate rest of the world contingent for #WSF2019

WorldSchoolsFestival2019Nine of the ten teams participating at the 2019 World Schools Festival at Paul Roos Gymnasium have been revealed, with four of the sides hailing from the world’s number-one ranked country in rugby – New Zealand.

Five different nations will be represented in the Rest of the World contingent, while an Africa Pacific Select XV, a Barbarians-style outfit coached by some of the world’s best talent, will make their second appearance at the tournament.

The Africa Pacific Select XV, along with Christchurch Boys High School and Napier Boys High School from New Zealand, Hartpury College from England and the New South Wales Cavaliers from Australia will all be returning in 2019, while five teams will be making their debut next year.

The participating Rest of the World teams are:

Christchurch Boys’ High School, Napier Boys’ High School, Hartpury College, Africa Pacific Select XV, Southland Boys’ High School (New Zealand), John McClashan (New Zealand), New South Wales Cavaliers (Australia), USA Schools XV (USA), Italian All Stars XV (Italy).

Christchurch Boys’ High School is one of the leading sporting schools in New Zealand and have produced 46 All Blacks, including the likes of Daniel Carter and Owen Franks. The school, currently ranked 4th in the New Zealand rugby rankings, suffered losses to Grey College and Paarl Boys’ High in 2018, and are eager to make amends in 2019.

“It is a fantastic tournament where we were really looked after,” said Reece Archibald, head coach of the first XV in 2018. “Everyone was so friendly, it was incredibly well-organised, and it is an outstanding opportunity for the boys.”

New Zealand’s second-ranked school team, Napier Boys’ High, also failed to register a win in 2018, losing to Boland Landbou and Monument High School. The school has twelve All Blacks in their alumni, and the first XV’s head coach Brendon Ratcliffe said that the team couldn’t wait to return to the winelands region of South Africa.

“It is the home of secondary school rugby in the world, and we feel extremely privileged to be participating.”

England’s Hartpury College, who are a feeder team for the club Gloucester, where former Springbok Johan Ackermann is head coach, were one of the most impressive outfits at the 2018 tournament. They defeated Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) 26-15, before going down to Grey College on the final day.

“We produced eleven schoolboy internationals last season and we wanted to be tested by the best, and what better way to test the players than in South Africa?” said Wayne Thompson, head coach of the team. “To be tested, you have to travel and experience different cultures, and this tournament offers exactly that.

Invercargill-based Southland Boys’ High School, who defeated fellow World Schools Festival competitor John McGlashan College in this year’s regional school rugby semi-final in Dunedin, have produced 22 All Blacks, their most notable being 100-cap superstar Mils Muliaina. John McGlashan meanwhile is the alma mater of former All Blacks hooker Andrew Hore, who played 83 Tests for his country.

The USA and Italy will be sending through squads comprised of their best schoolboy talent, with international rugby consultant Hein Kriek taking charge of the American side. Former player Polla Roux, who coached an Italian side at the 2018 tournament, described the World Schools rugby Festival as a great event.

“To experience a new culture and measure yourself against the best in the world, and above all in a beautiful rugby-crazy country, is an unforgettable experience which no-one can ever take away from you.”

The New South Wales Cavaliers, who suffered losses to Monument High School and Boland Landbou, will be eager to redeem themselves in 2019, as will the Africa Pacific Select XV, who were defeated by Hilton College and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool. The Africa Pacific Select XV will be far stronger in 2019 however, as they’ll be comprised of talent from some of New Zealand’s top schools, including Kelston Boys’ High School, Wesley College and Hastings Boys’ High School.

A tenth team will be revealed in due course, as the Rest of the World sides look to improve on their 2018 record in the tournament. The South African teams dominated matters in the Ryder Cup style format, winning eighteen of the twenty matches played.

The ten South African teams competing at the 2019 World Schools Festival are:

Paul Roos Gimnasium, Affies, Boland Landbou, Glenwood, Grey College, Hilton College, Monument, SACS, Paarl Gimnasium, Invitation XV.

    Beknopte telkaart:

Waterkloof 240/6 (Simeon de Bruyn 62, Ludwig Kaestner 49, Karel Verhoef 36*; Jethro Duigan 2/29, Juandré Scheepers 2/46); Garsfontein 241/8 (Raynard van Niekerk 62, Christiaan Oberholzer 46, Juandré Scheepers 43; Karel Verhoef 2/16, Wernich van Dyk 2/43, Albert Wells 2/48). Garsfontein wen met twee paaltjies.

  • Garsfontein staan tussen Klofies en vyfde titel

    NoordvaalKrieket

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Monument 66 (Renato di Emidio 14, Ekstras 14; Hardus Coetzer 6/17, Wernich van Dyk 2/6, Albert Wells 2/12); Waterkloof 68/4 (Albert Wells 29*, Jandré Pretorius 19*; Nathan Hoffman 2/23, Dylan Lues 2/38). Waterkloof wen met ses paaltjies.

Potchefstroom Volkskool 279 ( ; Reynecke Shaikh 3/34, Ruben van Niekerk 3/50); Garsfontein 280/8 (Christiaan Oberholzer 114*, Robert Ferreira 102). Garsfontein wen met twee paaltjies.
