  • Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival fixtures

NewsGCorneSlabbertHOSTS Grey are set for an explosive finish to the Standard Bank Grey High School Rugby Festival when they take on King Edward School of Johannesburg in the final match of the tournament next weekend.

Set to start at 3.20pm on the Philip field, the match will bring the curtain down on the annual extravaganza of schoolboy rugby which will take place on a number of fields on the Grey campus.

In association with Powerade and supported by AlgoaFM, the annual festival will see 81 teams taking part and almost 2 000 players and officials descending on Port Elizabeth for the action on April 28 and 30.

Grey will begin their programme against another Johannesburg side in St John’s College, but it is the final game against KES which is sure to have an injection of spice.

Both proud rugby-playing schools, the sides are sure to be fired up to take home the bragging rights.

The home team have traditionally risen to their occasion at their own festival, but that will only have their KES rivals all the more motivated to pull off victory.

A total of 28 first teams from around the country will do battle during the festival and there is guaranteed to be some exciting action from top schools such as Garsfontein of Pretoria, Johannesburg’s Jeppe High and Durban High School.

Known as Garsies, the Pretoria outfit will prove a handful for Bloemfontein entrants Louis Botha Tech, while the main curtain-raiser on Monday when they tackle DHS will be part of fascinating final afternoon.

Another enthralling contest should come on the opening day when Grahamstown outfit St Andrew’s College open their programme against DHS.

Border powerhouses Queen’s, Selborne and Dale will be in attendance, joined by Hudson Park and Stirling.

Dale will have a tough opener against Jeppe, who have been given one of the harder schedules for the weekend. Besides the slick-running Dalians, they will face Selborne on the Monday, never a side you can take lightly.

Following their notable recent win over Brandwag, Marlow will be keen to make an impact and will provide tough opposition for Graeme College in their opening game, which kicks off the festival on the Philip field.

Their second clash against the energetic Louis Botha outfit should make for a thrilling encounter on the Pollock Oval.

Teams such as Woodridge, Otto du Plessis and Ithembelihle will also relish the opportunity to show what they can do.

Woodridge and Otto play the opening match on the Pollock Oval and the Thornhill-based outfit will again be tested on Monday against Ithembelihle.

The Port Elizabeth township side will not be able to write off the Grey Unicorns in their Saturday encounter.

The first teams competing are: Grey High, Marlow Landbou, Graeme, St Andrew’s, Daniel Pienaar, Kingswood, Woodridge, Brandwag, Otto du Plessis, Muir, Ithembelihle, Nico Malan (all EP), St Stithians, Jeppe, KES, St John’s, Parktown, St David’s (Johannesburg), Garsfontein, St Alban’s (Pretoria), Queen’s, Selborne, Dale, Hudson Park, Stirling (Border), Louis Botha Tech (Bloem), DHS (Durban).

    Puntemakers:

Grey-kollege 47 (21) – Drie: Jan-Hendrik Wessels (2), Werner Gouws (2), Lesley Botha, De Wet Marais, Zander du Plessis. Doelskoppe: Zander du Plessis (6). HTS Drostdy 5 (5) – Drie: Cohen Jasper.

Affies 38 (19) – Drieë: Dieter Crafford, Dewald Donald, Janco Uys, George Oosthuizen, Stephin Alberts, Jason Scheepers. Doelskoppe: Regardt Roets (4). Boland Landbou 14 (14) – Drieë: Bertus Baard, Sebastian de Klerk. Doelskoppe: Gavin Mills (2).

  • SA school coach sacked for supporting the All Blacks

DeonCarneyAllWatch out John Mitchell, you might lose your job as Bulls coach for supporting the All Blacks!

Two coaches from Griqualand West’s school system, Deon Carney (Noord-Kaap) and Joe Molale (Adamantia), was sacked as coaches of one of the u18-sides that will play in the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Paarl later this year for being All Black supporters. By this argument Bulls coach, John Mitchell, might also be in the firing line. Mitchell is a former All Black and also coached the All Blacks before moving to South Africa.

Carney and Molale would’ve coached the union’s Academy-side at the Craven Week in Paarl. Carney was bemused after being called to a meeting with Griquas president, Jannie Louw, on Saturday where he was informed that following a Whatsapp message from Saru he will now longer be coaching the Academy-side. “My first thought was that it was a joke, but it wasn’t. We weren’t given any indication before the dismissal on what the meeting was about. So we had no time to prepare a defence,” said Carney.

The chairman of Griqualand West Schools Rugby, Danie Slabbert, and Griquas CEO, Arne van Rooyen, was also present at the meeting where Carney and Molale was sacked.

Carney was appointed coach of the team at the end of February. He was busy as selector at the Kimberley Regional trials which was held on Friday and Saturday. After being sacked it also meant that him and Molale was effectively not on the selection panel anymore as well. According to reports from the Diamond Fields Advertiser  (DFA) – Louw emphasised that the duo was not officially appointed to the team. Carney says that he has proof in an e-mail that he was appointed.

“Our country needs more patriots and Griquas have decided to offer Saru our unwavering support. Everyone has the right to choose who they support, but that doesn’t entitle anyone top misuse our structures for their personal benefit,” Louw reportedly told the DFA

Carney coached Griquas to their first unbeaten Craven Week since 2001 during last year’s edition of the prestigious tournament. He represented the union as a player at the Grant Khomo Week (2007) as well as the Craven Week (2008 and 2009) during his schooling at Northern Cape High. He captained the union at the Grant Khomo Week of 2007.

Carney who also represented the senior Griqua-team is still a avid supporter who attends matches at Tafel Lager Park. He also still plays club rugby for Kimberley. He has only one profile picture dating back to 1 June 2012 of him in an All Black-jersey. “It was from while I was playing club rugby in New Zealand. I do support the All Blacks as I like the type of rugby they are playing. I also was a big supporter of the Blue Bulls when I was still as school and also at sometime the Sharks for the way they played the game. I also support the Springboks. It was not a problem when I coached the Craven Week-side last year,” said Carney.

He lived in New Zealand for three years, while playing club rugby in the Land of the Long White Cloud. He made the extended group of the Wellington Lions before returing to South Africa to play for University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Impis in the Varsity Shield competition.

“We hope they come to their senses and rehabilitated so we can give them another opportunity to be part of Griquas’ school structures,” Louw told the DFA.

Carney has seeked legal advice and also requested that the Griqualand West Rugby Union sent him the reason for his sacking on formal communication as he wishes to take the matter further. “I take this matter personally. If the reason was because I’m not rated as a coach I would’ve taken it on the chin, but it has nothing to do with my coaching ability,” said Carney.

  • School of Rugby Rankings – 23 April 2018

School of Rugby Rankings – 23 April 2018

Rugby FB iconSo let the quarrelling begin.

Like last year Paarl Gimnasium takes the pole position on the opening rankings of School of Rugby. There is not a lot between Gimmies and second placed, Grey College of Bloemfontein. Like every year the early on rankings does not reflect who will win who, but rather rates a team’s performance at this point of the season.

Paul Roos Gimnasium also looked impressive and takes third position. This weekend’s Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley will sort out some of the arguments. It might also raise a few new questions. Last year’s number one, Paarl Boys’ High, starts on fifth position and still needs to fire on all cylinders.

Our rankings is running on a new Ten Tier System and there will be some fine tuning to our algorithms and the tiers will also sort themselves out at the season progresses. The most interesting and puzzling ranked team is Outeniqua of George who is in position 22 without bagging a victory in their three matches thus far. They however came close in beating an undefeated Menlopark (20-19) during Noord/Suid in Pretoria. They also made Paarl Boys’ High (21-10) work hard for a victory.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing.

We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously. Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings.

Paul Roos beskik vanjaar oor ‘n gevaarlike agterhoede.

Roux praises Junior Bok character to defeat Georgia

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux praised his team’s character as they produced a solid second-half fightback to earn a rewarding 48-23 victory over Georgia at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday. It was the South Africans’ second warm-up match in preparation for the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The first half was tight as the Junior Springboks scored three tries to a converted try and two penalty goals by their Georgian counterparts, which saw them lead 17-13 at the break.

The visitors took the lead briefly in the second half, but the SAU20s held their composure and showed fantastic character to score five second-half tries to power their way to victory against their U20 Championship pool opponents. “This match was great preparation for the World Rugby U20 Championship,” said Roux.

“Georgia came out firing in the first half, and that is exactly what we wanted. With a whole lot of personnel changes for this Test it took the players a while to get into the match, but it laid the foundation for the guys that came on to really excel and it is pleasing that we got almost 50 points on the board. “I thought we improved on our scrums, which is pleasing as we worked hard on that, and the tempo that we played at is also something we can bank. I think it will set us in good stead for the future.”

The visitors struck first as their flyhalf Tedo Abzhandadze kicked a penalty goal in the third minute, but their lead was short-lived as the hosts were awarded a penalty try four minutes later following a high tackle on the tryline. Roux’s charges built on this with a try by centre Manuel Rass in the 16th minute after sustained pressure on attack, which saw them extend their lead to 12-3.

A lack of concentration on defence, however, cost the Junior Springboks late in the half as Abzhandadze navigated his way to the tryline, but the hosts struck back shortly after as winger David Kriel received the ball out wide and crossed the chalk. Abzhandadze, however, closed the gap on the scoreboard to four points shortly before halftime as he knocked over his second penalty goal.

The Georgian flyhalf continued to make his presence felt in the opening exchanges of the second half as he kicked another penalty goal and then earned his second try with some illusive running up-field, which he converted to push his team into a 23-17 lead.

But the Junior Springboks bounced back strongly as Wandisile Simelane, Schalk Erasmus and Lubabalo Dobela made an impact off the bench to finish off back-to-back tries, which pushed the hosts into a 38-23 lead with minutes left on the clock.

The SAU20s finished the match on a high as Ruan Nortje and Sihle Njezula crossed the line to take their try tally to seven for an encouraging 48-23 victory. The Junior Springboks’ next assignment will be their UK Tour where they will face Scotland, Wales and England.

    Scorers:

Junior Springboks 48 (17) – Tries: Penalty Try, Manuel Rass, David Kriel, Wandisile Simelane, Schalk Erasmus, Lubabalo Dobela, Sihle Njezula. Conversions: Lyle Henricks (3). Georgia 23 (13) – Tries: Tedo Abzhandadze (2). Conversions: Tedo Abzhandadze (2). Penalty goals: Tedo Abzhandadze (3).

    School Rugby Results – 21 April 2018

Rugby FB iconPaul Roos Gimnasium will look to turn the tables on Grey High School in their annual Premier Interschools clash at Markotter in Stellenbosch today. This match will be broadcasted live on SuperSport 8.

The defending champions of the Tuks Series will face Garsfontein in an important clash which will determine if they will be able to get a chance to defend their title. Monnas needs to score five tries and win the match to ensure they snatch a place in the final away from Transvalia. Transvalia will travel to Polokwane to face Pietersburg and will almost certainly bag the maximum amount of points.

Menlopark will host EG Jansen of Boksburg in a clash that will determine who will book the other spot in the final of the Tuks Series.
